Chapter 5

Chapter 5

The trader had taken her into his house. He did not ask questions as Marigold told him about Lithônion, but he made her stay for several days to rest. Upon Marigold's leave, the trader's wife stroked her face and held her tight as they said good-bye.

Two weeks ago Marigold had left them and by then she knew that Lithônion had been right. She never would be able to make it over the mountain pass before winter would come. She was heading Northeast. Her belly was bulging and made it harder for her to walk fast.

Once when she could not see her way anymore and decided to rest, the child always seemed to wake up. The first night she had felt the babe was when she walked with Lithônion. She just had been drifting off to sleep as she felt something deep inside of her, as if a butterfly had touched her with its wings. Lithônion had raised an eyebrow and turned to her, glancing over her body that became more round every day. He had sensed the child moving.

Marigold had decided to sleep in a hay shed that night, but the child in her womb kept her from falling asleep. She could feel it kick in all direction and once she observed that it turned upside down. Suddenly she felt a bump. As she touched it to rub the sore spot, she felt something hard below the surface. The young woman smiled as she realized that she just had felt the heel of her unborn child under her skin. Happy, she finally fell asleep.

The next day Marigold reached a village. It was rather poor looking and the people stared at her. The narrow roads were dirty and dogs followed her, barking. She had decided to cross the town straight. She wanted to reach the little town of Bree within the next ten days. There, she had heard elves, hobbits and men circulated in the small town. Maybe she would meet the elves and could ask them for help to cross the mountain pass.

In the center of the small dirty village Marigold saw the sign of a tavern. She stared at the heavy wooden door and pushed it open. The young woman brushed the hood of her heavy cloak back and headed straight to the host, who sat on a round, rough built little table.

"What can I do for you? Food or shelter?" He asked in a friendly manner. His pleasant warmth illuminated round about him as mirth showed in his brown eyes
"I have nothing to trade but the work of my hands, but I need shelter desperately." The man shook his head. Marigold moved slightly and her cloak opened and exposed her soft rounded belly.

"You are traveling with a child under your heart, all alone at these times? It is a miracle you have not been killed out there already." He admonished her. He gazed down at her feet and saw how swollen they were and then frowned.

"I have a small cottage on the end of the road. It belonged to my old pig maid. You can make yourself comfortable. As for Food, you'll find it in the kitchen, here." He pointed toward the direction of the kitchen and then shook his head, scratching his beard. An older woman came to them and wondered aloud, "Where shall your way lead you too?"
"To my husband, the father of my child. I need to get over the Misty Mountains to the Mirkwood Realm." Marigold replied loudly over the bustling noise, unaware of the attention that she received from the patrons.

Suddenly everyone was quiet in the bar room. Heads turned toward her direction. "The Mirkwood Realm? You never reach it in your condition and the way is dangerous. And they speak of a dangerous, mean elven king with dungeons of torture lives there." The host had paled and stared with wide open eyes into Marigold's face. The older woman suddenly turned her head, after watching her husband's horrified facial expression as he spoke about the terrible happenings of Mirkwood. Adverting her attention to the young woman before her, she reached out to stroke Marigold's bulging belly.

She touched it and then pulled her hand back, quickly. The babe had kicked her hard. The woman grinned and placed a hand on Marigold's shoulder. As the two women reached the door, the host called Marigold one more time, "At dawn, the pigs need to be fed."

They walked down to the cottage, it was not in the best condition, but Marigold knew they had taken her into the village. The old woman opened the door and the windows to let fresh air in the dank cottage. She instantly went to the small oven to make a little fire. Marigold set down on a rough wooden bench.

"It is not much that you have here. But you will eat and have a roof over your head. Your child is big. Your time will come soon," the lady said, peering at Marigold over her shoulder. Marigold thanked Luitgard the old woman.

Marigold laid down on the narrow bed. She knew she would have to spend some time here until Saelbador would find her. Although it may take some weeks before they were reunited, because the leaves had already started to fall. The elves would soon be celebrating the Autumn Harvest. Dreaming of her beloved she rested in the bare furnished house.
