Chapter 7
After I finally woke up the days in the hospital crawled by. My parents had been with me the first week or so that I was unconscious...but had to return to the East Coast. I was told that after they had left there was almost always someone sitting with me. I'd just moved here, so I couldn't imagine who would know me enough to sit with me. None of my co-workers gave me a second glance. I was staring out the window when one of the nurses knocked on my door. "Ms. Lewis you have a visitor...should I let him in?"
I turned my head toward her. "Sure...but I..." My voice faltered and my heart leapt in my throat when I saw who my visitor was. All of my false memories pushed themselves back into my mind...bringing me to tears to remember that it was just a dream...that this man bringing me flowers was a stranger, not the man I'd almost married. He was wearing a heavy coat despite the warm weather, and carrying a bouquet of daisies.
"I'm glad to see that you've woken up." He said. "You weren't much for conversation the first time I visited you." He grinned and held out the flowers.
I took them from him, "Daisy's!" I smiled, "My favourite flower...you used to..." I stopped before I almost embarrassed both of us. All I could do was look down and mumble a thank you.
"The doctor told me about what happened when you woke up...so if my being here makes you uncomfortable I can leave."
"Oh God no! Please, you're alright...I'll just be a little love struck for a while that's all." I blushed and stuck out my hand, "I'm Sarah by the way."
"Elijah." He smiled as he took my hand. "Your parents were kind enough to tell me a little about you when we met here at the hospital."
"You met my parents?" I tried to sit up so I could listen better, but I was only sliding further down the bed. I felt his hands on my waist as he gently lifted me higher on the bed, then reach behind and adjusted my pillows. "Why didn't they stay?" I tried to remain calm.
"They were very reluctant to go...but I assured them that you'd be well taken care of." He reached into his coat and produced a box of chocolates. "Your mother told me to keep these away from you, and I was told you were addicted to them...so I thought I'd bring you some." He grinned.
"Wow...it's not everyday a movie star breaks my mother’s rules...so I think I'll have to make sure they are never seen again." I opened the box and motioned for him to take one. He obliged with a grin, and smiled when I removed one. "Could you put these in that drawer?" I motioned to the bedside table, "Top drawer if you please."
"Of course!" When he opened the drawer he laughed when he saw the book. "So you're a "Ringer" then I see..." He held it up at my questioning look.
"Oh! Um....yeah...I liked the books when I was younger. I always keep a copy of it with me, my comfort book I guess. I had it with me the day of..." I trailed off.
His eyes shone with concern as he sat on the bed next to me. "Hey...it'll be alright. You weren't seriously hurt...you'll walk out of here tomorrow."
"Tomorrow?" I felt my face fall. "Well I wish I had been awake for more of your visits then. I had a delightful time."
"Heh...well you are in for more delightful times then my dear. I feel awful that this happened in front of my house. I'm the one who phoned the ambulance, I saw you get hit just as I was leaving my front door. Besides, your puppy is staying at my house. She's alright, the driver missed her. She ran into my yard and brought me to you."
"Wow...she's like Lassie or something..." was all I could say.
He laughed, "Well...to get to the point, I'm flying to New Zealand tomorrow afternoon. We are all getting together to celebrate the DVD release of Return of the King. I want you to come with me. You're going to be on crutches for a few more days, and your parents didn't think you should be alone. I told them I'd take good care of you." He took my hand and grinned, "And I don't think I should make your mother mad at me."
