There's a Rose That Blooms in Fairy Tales

For the next few months, Elijah made Rian's life worth it. She slept a little more, ate a little more, even her beatings seemed a little less painful. Elijah made sure that she called him every night after Orlando had fallen asleep, deciding that if she didn't call by 1 in the morning, he was beating her, and that's when Elijah would come over to pick up something he'd "forgotten."

"God finally, I thought he'd never fall asleep." She whispered into the phone, leaning against the kitchen counter warily, the phone cradled in one slender hand.

"Rough night?" Elijah couldn't mask the worry in his voice as he waited in apprehension to see what exactly his friend had inflicted on the poor girl this time.

"Yeah, he's worried about this new film he's working on, it's not really his fault, you know." Even over the phone she didn't sound convinced of what she'd just said to him.

"That's no excuse, Rian! We're all stressed out, he doesn't need to take it out on you."

"I know, but it'll be nice to have the house to myself for a little while, anyway." She hadn't realized she was talking normally again, her voice rising a little louder and more relaxed as the conversation continued.

"He hasn't said anything about taking you with?"

"No, thank God!"

"He couldn't hurt you Rian, not with all those people around." She could hear the strain in his voice, but she brushed it off with a casual wave of her hand.

"I know, but I figure-" She stopped in midsentence, her eyes widening and her heart beginning to pound wildly in her chest.

Elijah's pulse immediatly quickened when she stopped; he'd always worried about getting caught, but now he heard it too.

The faint breathing of a third party on the other line.
