Dom suggests driving up to a lake he’d seen, and then going for a walk. He’s driving slowly, ridiculously so, and Billy begs him to drive a little bit more faster.
“Pedestrians are walking faster than us, Dom!”
Dom isn’t really concentrating on what he’s doing. He made a decision right after Elijah’s phone call. He’ll tell Billy during their walk. He is making up his mind about how he will start and what words to choose, so that Billy won’t be freaking out.
“The doctor says that my memory will come back soon; maybe gradually, maybe all at once.”, Billy says to break the silence. “He says that you guys have to talk with me about what happened. Orlando said that he saw us together, right before the accident, storming out of the bar.”
“Do you really want to talk about that, Billy?”, asks Dom, unsure.
“Yes, I think I’m ready. I really want to know what happened that night. It’s like something’s missing in your life, you know? You enjoy life, have fun, live these special moments that might change your life forever and then suddenly – BOOM – it’s all gone. Just like that.”
Billy looks out of the window. Dom knows just too well how much Billy wants his memory back. It will happen today. In a few minutes.
“We’re there. Come on, mate, let’s breathe some fresh air!”, says Dom and both get out of the car.
They take the path that leads around a small lake. Trees, grass, some snow and clear water – it’s the perfect atmosphere.
“So, Dom, when are you going to tell me?”
Dom jumps. Could he know?
“I don’t know what you mean…” Dom plays the stupid.
“What happened at the bar. What were you thinking I meant, ya daft eejit?”
“Nothing special. I just thought… Forget it mate. Not important.”
Dom takes a deep breath.
“OK, let’s get your memory back then. But I’ll have to start a little bit earlier than that night, ok? S’only logical. If you want to know the whole story, I should begin at the beginning, right?”
“OK, but I didn’t think that there would be more to come than that evening.”, answers Billy, a little bit confused.
Now there is no turning back. Dom thinks for a second and starts to tell his story.
“Alright. You remember our first meeting, Bills? When I went into the casting hall and you smiled at me? I guess it happened then. We were such good buddies, right from the beginning till the end.”
“Yeah, we kind of went through a lot of things, didn’t we?”, smiles Billy. He really seems to have no idea what is going to happen now.
“Yeah, we did. The thing is, when you told me one day about your girlfriend, I didn’t feel very well. It was really strange. I thought I might lose you.”
Silence.
“As a friend, of course.”, adds Dom quickly. These declarations are coming too fast. He has to take it step by step.
“So that’s what’s been worrying you! I’ve been wondering why you were so quiet for ages. You wouldn’t talk to me about your problems. I thought it was because something happened in your family or that you were angry at me. I just kept my mouth shut. I’m such an idiot. I should’ve said something to you. Our goodbye was so cold. No emotion or anything. You just said, “See you man!” and left. I was shocked. I’m so glad we’ve sorted it now!”
He pats Dom on the shoulder, before grabbing the other man and embraces him really hard, tears running down his face.
“Billy, it’s alright.”
Dom is surprised to see his friend crying into his shoulder.
“Stop crying, you tosser! You’ll make me cry, too!”, says Dom and tries to play cool, making jokes again.
“I’m sorry, it just… I had to let my emotions out. Sorry, Dom.”
“It’s alright. I can understand that.”, answers Dom. I hope he’s as understanding when I tell him the truth...
“Well, that night, at the bar, I passed out and… you were worried about me… We went to the toilet… you wouldn’t leave me alone, you said. I was in an absolute state.”
Dom stops walking and looks away. He forces himself to look into Billy’s eyes.
“I’ve been taking antidepressants. I was an addict, Billy.”
Billy gets a strange look. His gaze is fixed on a point somewhere in the middle of Dom’s face.
“Your pill bottle fell. On the floor in the cubicle.”, says Billy suddenly. He is starting to remember.
“That’s right. You got angry and asked me why I was taking these pills.”
“You were yelling at me that it wasn’t my problem. You ran out of the bar. I followed you.”
Billy is saying this all with a strange tone in his voice. Like he can’t really believe what he is saying. He sounds like a robot. Talking without any understanding of what it is that he is saying.
“Yes. And then you said something, Billy, that confused me. You said that you could help me. That you knew what the reason was. Do you remember?”
Billy loses the vacant stare and looks into Dom’s eyes. His look is serious and somehow full of anger and disgust.
“Yes, I do remember now. I also remember you telling me that you wished we have never met. Then all this wouldn’t have happened.”
“I know. I’m so sorry, Billy. I didn’t mean it. It was the pills. I… I don’t know what to say.”
“Better if you say nothing more.” He starts to walk back to the car. Then he turns around one more time and now he is shouting:
“Who the hell do you think you are? I was trying to help, Dom! HELP! Do you know that word at all? Being as selfish as you are! Do you know why I pushed you aside? Because I was trying to save your life, you idiot! I was trying to save my best friend’s life, who’s behaving like a complete tosser! And I tell you one more thing: I would do it again! I just can’t understand why you behaved like that! You just isolate yourself from the world around you! That is no way to solve your problems, Dom! And I really want to know now, why the fucking hell you were taking those pills! Tell me right now!”
“I love you.”
Billy wants to speak again, but stops right in the middle of his breath. “What did you say?”
“I love you.”
