“Ouch, Rose, no, please…hey, stop!” Sam managed to shout amidst her brutal attack and his own laughter. “Ye didna’ have to pinch me so hard, and on me own nipples too.” Sam had quickly decided during the course of their lovemaking that he sincerely appreciated his new bride’s playfulness. “How did you become such a bold lass, me love?”
“Yer forgettin’ I’m the only girl in a brood full of boys. I had to grow up tougher and bolder than other girls did…either that or be bullied all the time. I’ve always been a Tomboy, you know that. I kept up pretty well with you and me brothers when we were young, if I do say so meself. And I could whoop the lot of you one-on-one, that is until we got to be tweenagers and you all gained weight on me…if I remember rightly, I made you holler uncle a few times.” She reached to pinch him again before Sam grabbed her wrist with a laugh of triumph.
“And I look forward to sayin’ uncle to you more often, if you take my meanin’,” Sam smiled as he lifted his arm and curled his fingers into the hair on the nape of Rose’s neck. No urging was needed to elicit a smile from her as she lowered her head and their lips met.
“Rosa-love, do you know I’ve been inside you now I think nearly two hours straight?” Sam whispered and was answered by her embarrassed giggle. “Do you suppose we should take a break for a bit?” More giggles.
“Aye, Samwise, but I think I’m gonna’ be pretty sore,” she said matter-of-factly, “Let’s you pull out slow just in case it hurts.”
“Yes, me love,” Sam held her arms to brace her as she sat up upon him again. She cautiously lifted her body away from his with her knees and hands.
She let out a small gasp as she felt the warm confinement they had shared leave her. In its place was left an empty coolness that immediately longed to be filled once more. They climbed back up to the pillows. Sam reclined as Rose gracefully rolled to rest beside him, her body partially covering his. Immediately her leg laid itself across his as his arm slid around her body to hold her to him. Both lovers stretched and snuggled before settling back down in silent comfort to look up at the ceiling.
“There’s a cobweb up there,” Sam said.
“There is? Where?” Rose asked as he pointed to the very same corner she had noticed earlier. “Hmmmm, I’ll have to take care of that….”
“Later!” he commanded as he tightened his arm around her body in a quick hug.
‘I get to clean the cobwebs from his room, OUR room,’ she secretly smiled to herself. She had waited so long for him.
“This is a nice and cozy room, Sam. I like it here. And this huge bed, there’s room enough for four hobbits in here. But that’s fine, because I travel around the bed a lot when I sleep. Oh, I forgot to tell you that before we got married. Watch out, I might just clunk ya’ in the middle of the night, not on purpose mind ye, at least not on purpose all the time. So, still want to sleep in the same bed with me?”
“I guess I can put up with yer movin’ about, if you can put up with, well…”
“OH NO!!! You snore! Just how loud are you Sam?”
“Well, Pippin once swore there was a wild snortin’ bull in our camp one night. I told him he was daft. Next day he said he came over to me while I was sleepin’ to wake me and nearly got scared to death when he shook me and out came the snortin’ bull as I rolled over next to him. Merry and Mr. Frodo said they nearly choked laughin’ so hard. I didna’ hear a thing, just rolled right over. You still want to sleep in the same bed with me now that you know ‘bout me own sleepin’ habits?”
“Of course! Between my movin’ and yer snorin’ we should at least get one good night’s sleep between the two of us.” She smiled as she reached over to play with the smattering of golden hair on his chest.
“But you are right,” Sam began, “It is nice in here. Frodo and I tried to fix it up when we moved yer things in yesterday. Marigold and Daisy helped us. I let the girls put yer things away, didna’ feel right ‘bout goin’ through ‘em meself. Yer Mum helped us too. She said she had a rockin’ chair for us to put in that corner over there…you know, when …well when the time comes for it. She said we had plenty of space in here for a…well…a small bassinet, and she said that the fireplace kept it just warm enough in here to chase away the chill.”
“Samwise, when exactly do you want to start havin’ babies? We’ve never talked about it, children, I mean. I guess it’s expected of us, but what do you think about it all.” The forthrightness of her question startled him.
He felt a small amount of discomfort. He was used to working and gardening and even traveling and fighting, but not planning for a family. He guessed that now was probably a good time to begin; no matter how odd and grown-up he suddenly felt.
“Rose-wife, I would like to get to know you more before we bring a child into the world. We’ll spend the rest of our lives together raisin’ children. Now is the only time it will just be the two of us. I want to enjoy havin’ you to meself for a little while. Of course, we might not have any say in the matter if we keep lovin’ each other like this; a wee one is bound to want to get their start between us the way we’ve been together. And I can’t say as I would blame ‘em for wantin’ to be a part of us, of this…” Sam turned his face toward Rose and kissed the hair on the side of her head.
“Aye, husband, I want to know you more too. I feel a bit selfish with you right now and I don’t wish to share you fer a while. But don’t worry too much about getting me with child during at least our first week together,” she replied.
“I’m foolish in the ways of you lasses, as you might of figured out by now…what do you mean, not to worry our first week?” Sam inquired.
“Well, you see, well…I’ll be getting’ me moon cycle early next week, so I’ll probably not get pregnant for at least a fortnight. That is, unless you want to refrain from relations during my most fertile time then. And then there’s no guarantee that you won’t get me with child even then. ‘Tis all very confusin’, have I embarrassed you yet, or are you just a bit baffled ‘bout it all?”
“Very much BOTH, Rose. My sisters were awful secretive when it came to all this stuff. But I suppose I need to know all this to understand you better or if I ever want you to have me children. Will you tell me of all this as we go along, no matter how embarrassed and flustered I get? You know I’ll try to avoid all that woman stuff unless you just sit me down and make me face it.”
Rose laughed a little.
“I’ll gladly force you to learn ‘bout all that…you know how I dearly love to embarrass you every chance I get!” The two lovers returned to their silent contemplation of the bedroom ceiling as they caressed each other’s skin.
A few minutes passed…
“Although sometimes I’m terrified at the thought of bringing a child into this world,” Sam spoke in a whisper.
Rose noticed the change in his tone and lifted her head to look into his eyes.
“Go on, me love,” she gently urged before putting her head back into the crook of his arm. She gazed across his chest into the shadows of the room, a look of compassion overtaking her features.
Sam continued…
“I don’t think Mr. Frodo will ever decide to have children, or take a wife for that matter. The journey made him that much different. Now Merry and Pip, I don’t know, they never carried that thing themselves. And Strider, it’s a given, he has to have heirs…what a price to pay to win the woman you love…,” Sam was drifting into deep memories by this time. “We all fought our share of orcs. I didn’t fight in the great battles, but I had my share of watching loved ones fall, and not always to their death.” Sam felt Rose’s arms tighten around him.
“Rosa, there were so many times I was afraid, I mean really afraid. I know what horror means now. No one other than Frodo and me have seen the heart of Mordor. Sometimes I think it might be better to keep young children from comin’ into a world like this…one where they might go through what I saw, or worse, what Frodo went through.” Silent contemplation came over Sam once again.
“If ye think it best we not have any children, then I’ll agree with you, husba Ros Rose spoke very softly, hiding well any disappointment that Sam could have noticed from her. She felt him stiffen with her words. “You are me husband and you know more of the world than I do. I trust the decisions you make and I know if you feel this way, then it would be best to keep their delicate spirits from the evil of this world.”
‘…it would be best to keep their delicate spirits from the evil of this world…’
‘…I loved you back then and I still love the same you now…’
‘…when I would of gone into the fire just to watch over you…’
Samwise Gamgee considered the strength of the hobbit woman he held in his arms. He would never know how she would have held up had she been one of the Walkers, but he would not dismiss her because of what he thought she had not seen or done in her life. She had been given the task staying still and fighting from home. That, more than anything, had been what he wanted to do after the visions of the mirror, but he had been torn in two and had gonth hth his Frodo, to protect him. Sam had gone into the fire just to watch over him.
Rose had not been given a choice, at least none of which he had be completely aware. What would she have done had she been the one torn in two?
‘…be still, Samwise…I’m here to protect you…’
‘She would of followed me. She would of given her life for me, for him…’ Sam knew this in his heart. She would never let harm come to any she loved. Evil had no hope against her will.
“Rose-wife…I want us to have a baby as soon as we can. More than anything I want us to have a child. And I wish to have as many babies as we can make…a dozen…maybe more….”
“You called me Rose-wife…”
