Part 5

Part 5…

Glorfindel was starting to worry. It had been hours since Erestor had left to 'scout the surrounding area'. At first he hadn’t thought anything of it, going through the motions of organizing camp, sharpening his knives and sword, lighting the fire. If Erestor wanted to wander around in an unfamiliar place he was more than welcome, but now that the night was beginning to descend he was growing apprehensive. What if something had happened to him? He was in the middle of the nowhere, and without any skills there was a very real possibility that he had become lost, or had even been attacked. Making up his mind he reached for his weapons, moving in the direction Erestor had gone, he expertly slung his bow and blades onto his back. He came to a standstill as a form slipped from the trees. Erestor.

“About time you came back. Where were you? Did you get lost?”

“Calm yourself Glorfindel, I allowed the time to slip away from me, I apologize if you were worried.”

“Worried?” Glorfindel looked insulted. “Not in the slightest.”

“Then you were headed off into the forest with your weapons because?”

That gave him pause. His mind raced for a reasonable explanation as to why he would be headed into the woods, finally selecting the most plausible one. “I was going to hunt for something we could eat; we do not have a large selection of rations and I thought to preserve our supplies by snaring some game.” There, that sounded believable.

“Ah, I see. Well, you will be pleased to hear that I have already acquired some game for our consumption, and a good thing too, considering how late it is getting you would have had a tricky time capturing anything in the dark.” With a small smile Erestor moved towards their encampment, a pair of hares clasped in his left hand Glorfindels eyes glaring daggers at his retreating back.

Having the distinct impression that Erestor indeed knew how concerned he had been and was secretly laughing at him Glorfindel trailed behind him, cursing both Erestor for his superior manner and Elrond for getting him into this mess. He had never once managed to best Erestor, why would things start now?

“How did you manage to catch those anyhow?” Dropping down across the fire from his companion he removed his weaponry and laid it once more upon the ground.

“Twine.” Removing the small bundle of thick string from his tunic pocket he placed it inside his pack before moving to prepare the rabbits for dinner. Glorfindel watch, speechless, as Erestor deftly skinned, skewered and began to roast their improvised feast. He was further astonished when the advisor removed a selection of plants and herbs from his pocket, presumably gather during his 'scouting' and seasoned the meat. Maybe Erestor didn’t need a baby-sitter after all. The two sat in companionable silence as the rabbit cooked, each speculating about the other.

Erestor was perplexed. Glorfindel had actually been concerned for him. Certainly the warrior would endure a second death before admitting it, but Erestor knew different. Hidden behind that lighthearted exterior was a caring and considerate soul, Erestor had just never expected that caring or consideration to be directed at him. All Glorfindel had ever shown him was derision and a single minded determination to exasperate. It was intriguing to see a different side to his opponent for once. Slowly he turned the spit, his mouth watering at the intoxication aroma that wafted into the air along side the smoke.

Glorfindel, for his part, just could not get over Erestors abilities. Although he could have plausibly learnt to build a fire from a book, it was less likely that he also read how to snare game, skin it, and roast and season with the skill that had just been displayed. Erestor never ceased to surprise him and he found he had once again underestimated his opponent. The mild mannered advisor and counselor, who spent so much of his time immersed in books and scrolls, dealing with political matters day in and day out, had some hidden talents. He didn’t know Erestor at all! Deciding that there was a need to learn more about his quiet companion he elected to make the most of this opportunity that Elrond had presented him, that was if Erestor was willing to open up to him. That could be a bit of an impediment, considering he had gone out of his way to torment and antagonize the dark haired advisor for ages it was fairly good odds that he wouldn’t be to agreeable to enlightening Glorfindel to anything. Tomorrow, he’d start his quest for information about Erestor tomorrow. Being tired, both from the long ride and restless sleep he had gotten the previous night, thanks to Elrond, he determined it would be a wiser course of action to engage the sly counselor after he was fully rested. Leaning forward to take his share of the proffered food he smiled winningly at the object of his newly established curiosity. Erestor presented an interesting puzzle and Glorfindel resolved that he would decipher this puzzle, no matter the cost.
