Legolas

The journey back to Imladris did not take long but was exhausting nonetheless, and as dusk slowly approached we crossed the Bruinen via the Ford of Rivendale. The waters of the Bruinen have jealously guarded the last homely house from the time it was founded, keeping intruders away from Imladris by overflowing its banks. She answered only to the Lord of the Vale and none crossed her waters without him knowing.

One by one we crossed onto the banks and from there we followed a winding path that led down to the hidden vale. Immediately we could feel the change all around us. The air here was lighter, more warmer and the scent of the late blooming wildflowers that grew all along the path wafted in the cool night breeze. Pine trees grew all around us their sharp scent filling the air.

Further down the road we were met by a boarder patrol, and the leader Gárador a tall brown haired elf with a deep voice offered to accompany us back to Imladris while exchanging pleasantries with the twins and Estel while I quietly listened. As we neared Imladris we could hear the loud roaring of the waterfalls which Imladris is famous for. And from afar we could see the lights shinning form the house. The musical voices of the many inhabitants of the hidden vale floated in the wind towards us spurring to increase our pace.

We all could not wait to get home. Yes- home even to me. Imladris had become a second home to me and my family due to the great bond of friendship that had existed between the Lady Celebrian, Lord Elrond’s wife and my mother. So great was their friendship that when the Lady Celebrian chose to leave for Valinor after her brutal torture at the hands of orcs. My mother also chose to accompany her. It was only later that I came to learn from Ada ( father) that the Lady Celebrian and my mother had been lovers, and that she had only married Lord Elrond to fulfil a vision her mother the Lady Galadriel of the golden wood had had of her having children. And that vision would not have come to pass if she would have chose to bound herself to my mother.

The strong ties between the three kingdoms remained even after their departure and it was not many centuries later that Ada lost his heart again to Gildor Inglorion the leader of the wandering company of exiles from the House of Finrod and cousin to the Lady of the Golden wood. And Lord Elrond finally bonded with his long time companion, mentor and friend; the reborn Lord Glorfindel of Gondolin the famous balrog slayer. Who now also commanded the entire Imladrian guards. Through the years our families have spent time in each others kingdoms renewing the old ties that had been severed after the battle of the Last Alliance.

The path I noted had become wider, allowing two riders to ride side by side. Ahead of me rode Elrohir and Estel deep in conversation while further ahead Elladan rode next to Gárador also deep in conversation. I listened in dropping a few words here and there. The land around us had become darker as nightfall drew near, but the elven glow we were all emitting lit the path ahead and all around us. Though the twins was not as bright as Gárador and I due to their peredhil blood but was even so bright enough to illuminate their entire being. Estel’s body I surprisingly noted was also emitting a faint glow, even though he had a bit of elven blood in him still it was not strong enough to emit his inner light. Mulling over this new discovery I decided to store it away and later consult Lord Elrond about it.

The landscape had changed as we neared Imladris and no longer was the forest covered with pine trees but was now covered with large oak, beech, mahogany and willow trees whose falling leaves littered the path. Closing my eyes I returned their silent greetings as their presence filled me with a great longing to see the trees of my Greenland home. Which I will be seeing in the coming of spring, “ By then you would have lost him” my conscious called out mournfully to me.

And the peacefulness that had earlier washed over me, slowly melted away and was quickly replaced by a profound sense of pain and bitterness that filled my entire body wrenching a painful gasp from my lips.

`Legolas` Estel’s worried voice called out in my mind pulling me out of my thoughts.

Looking up I found that everyone had stopped and were looking at me with worried glances and Estel had moved to stand next to me.

“What”? I asked looking at them with a surprised glance.

“ You had stopped moving, mellon-nin ( my friend) and then all of a sudden Estel cried out in pain clutching his heart and calling out to you but you were not responding”. Elladan quietly said though I knew that everyone could hear the underlying fear in his voice.

“ I am sorry, I just got lost into my thoughts ” I lied swiftly. While internally berating myself for not properly shielding the pain from Estel.

“ Are you okay Elen - nin ( my star)” I asked Estel who had a pained look in his silver grey eyes.

“ Yes… I am” he replied closing his eyes then opening them. He let go of his horses reins and quickly mounted my horse from behind encircling his arms around me. The others noting our need for privacy continued at a slower pace ahead of us leading Estel’s mount.

“ Are you okay” Estel asked softly while nuzzling my neck, his warm breath tickling my ear.

“ I am fine” I replied as I intertwined our hands and leaned back on his broad chest letting my head rest on his shoulder.

I know he can sense the untruthfulness of my words, internally I dread the questions which I know he wants to ask. After all we have been dancing around this particular topic for the past five months. Instead Estel just lightly kissed my head while filling me through the bond with his love, strength and comfort. These I lightly drew upon the sensations dulling my earlier pain to a slight throb.

Looking at our intertwined hands I smiled seeing the matching pair of mithril wedding bands, my keen elven eyes noting the Tengwar words of love, honour and devotion which had been carved around the rings and in the centre my ring had two ruby stones while Estel’s had two topaz stones. We each wore our rings on our left index fingers a tradition among elves when males elves married of the same gender.

And on Estel’s right index finger lay Barahir the ring of Finrod Felargund, the ring was like to twin serpents and their eyes were emeralds, their heads meeting beneath a crown of golden flowers, that the one upheld and the other devoured. The ring was the badge of Finarfin and his house and was given to Estel’s ancestor Barahir after he aided Finrod in the Dagor Bragolladh.
Finrod when giving the ring to Barahir pledged his troth to Barahir and his kin.

I both hated and loved this ring, which Lord Elrond gave to Estel on his coming of age after informing him of his true ancestry. I love the ring for it represents that never dying kinship that has always existed between the men of the west and elves. Yet I hated it for it was an ever present reminder of Estel’s an avoidable destiny that would soon tear us apart.

The question is- when the time comes will I be strong enough to let him go. Will our love be strong enough to survive the parting?.

Estel untwined our hands and gently lifted my chin turning my head so I could face him. Looking into his saddened silver grey eyes I see that the same thoughts have also been running through his mind.

“ We will be fine A’mael ( beloved)” Estel softly said. He then bent his head and I opened my mouth welcoming the familiar kiss. Our tongues slowly caressed each other `open your mind melme (my love)` he called out to me. And I removed the mental shield I had put up when we were battling the orcs.

Our link reopened our thoughts flow through like water flowing through a broken dam. In the back of our minds I could feel the bond humming in satisfaction as we once again became one in the mind.
