A long shower had rid Tári of the dirt on her body, but she still felt filthy. She could not get the feeling of Legolas off her, and everything inside her ached. Bruises were once again apparent on her face, something she would not be able to hide from anyone. Haldir would ask about it.

The rest of the day was spent in her room, laying upon her bed. She did not want to venture out, even as hungry as she was. No one came to find her, not even Legolas.

She could see the sun begin to fade. Morning worried her, for she would have to face either her brother or Haldir before long. She wondered if perhaps she should just tell the Marchwarden what happened, and take his protection. Her chest constricted in worry when she thought about how her father would react if he found out.

Tári frowned when she heard voices coming from outside her window. They were distant, but the quality was unmistakable. People were cheering.

She sat up as all thoughts of Legolas disappeared from her mind. No one in Mirkwood had had anything to cheer about for many years. Her heart thumped in her chest as hope came over her. Maybe her father was home!

Sliding off the bed, Tári hurried to the door and ran outside. The voices were louder now, and she could see many people not far from her home. Walking across the grass towards them, she looked around for what celecelebration might be about. She could see no one from her father's entourage, but as she got closer she knew something good had happened. A smile broke out across her face. The happiness was contagious.

In the midst of the crowd, a gentle hand found her shoulder. She turned to see Haldir looking down on her. The light was dim, but she could make out his expion.ion. There was a soft smile upon his lips, but his eyes held the weight of a burden.

"Tári," he said, just loud enough so she could hear him over the cheers, "I need to speak with you."

His blue eyes travelled over her face and, unconsciously, she reached up covered her cheek. He said nothing of it, though, merely leading her through the crowd until they wertsidtside of it, on their own in the darkening woods.

"Why is everyone so happy?" she asked when they were alone, "And why are you back so soon?"

"We came across a page," he said, then frowned and abruptly changed the subject. "What happened to you?" he asked, touching her face, "You look exhausted."

Pulling away from his face, she shook her head. "I'm just tired. I'm fine. Tell me what happened."

He seemed concerned, but sighed and allowed it to pass. "The page was sent from Imladris. Your father is returning."

Happiness and relief spread over her. "He's coming home?" She grinned and hugged Haldir, unable to stop herself.

The embrace was soon broken. When he pushed her back gently, she saw that he still carried the weight of something in his eyes. "There is something else I must tell you as well."

Tári's smile faded slightly. He looked as though what he had to say was not good news. "What is it?"

"I was informed that your father was successful in forming peace with Rivendell. Our realms are merging." She was still confused, so he took a deep breath and continued. "You've been promised to Lord Elrond as a wife."

Blinking back surprise, she shook her head. "What? What do you mean, a wife?"

"I don't know the specifics, Tári. I only know what the page has told me. It makes sense, though, that something like this would happen. If our realms are merging, it would be made official by a wedding."

"My father wouldn't do that to me," she said earnestly, "He wouldn't just give me away to someone."

Haldir's voice turned quiet. "He may not have had a choice. You are his only daughter."

"Why couldn't someone marry my father instead?" She felt herself begin to panic.

Placing a calming hand on her shoulder, he looked at her with an expression that told her he was trying to help. "Lord Elrond's only daughter has long since diminished. There is no one else. I implore you, Tári, do not jump to conclusions. Wait to speak with your father."

Nodding but still feeling anxious, the sounds of happiness that echoed in her ears suddenly felt suffocating. She looked towards the way of the crowd and wondered if they all knew the sacrifice she would possibly be making for their freedom. "What if it's true? What if I must marry the Noldor?"

"Then you will do it for your people, and make the best of it. You're strong. You would make a good ruler." When she looked up at him, he wore a smile of sadness and support. Biting her lip, she realized she knew she would submit to this marriage if she had to. Her people and her country were more important than her own happiness.

Tári sighed heavily. "When will my father arrive?"

"Late tomorrow, most likely. They are bringing Elrond as well."

Clenching her jaw, feeling suddenly tired, she thanked her friend. "Forgive me for not staying. I'm tired, and I have much to think about."

He stopped her before she could leave. "Tomorrow we will discuss this," he said softly, touching her face.

Tári flushed and lowered her face, turning and leaving without a word. She felt as if her whole world was collapsing.
