Chapter 5: Last Night DID Happen… Right?

Janessa sat up in bed, startled awake by the insistent pounding on her suite door. Disoriented, Jan blinked several times, looking around her bedchamber. Everything was in its place, her weapons by the bedside, clothes folded neatly on a chair.

Wait. Was that just a dream last night? Or did that actually happen? All evidence seemed to point toward the dream conclusion.

The pounding on the door became more demanding, Glorfindel's voice now audible.

The redhead moved to throw off the bedclothes and climb off the pallet only to have her body vigorously protest, soreness and aches making themselves known. Oh dear. That was NOT a dream.

Jan was spurred into motion when Glorfindel threatened to break the door in, the pounding suddenly ceasing. Jan flew from the bed, snagging her robe off the back of a chair as she dashed out to her door. She flung the door open and stepped aside in time for the golden-haired elf to speed past her before checking himself.

The seneschal whirled, having arrested his forward motion to find the redhead holding onto the door, her body shaking with repressed laughter. The look on the elf's face proved too much and the woman doubled over, alternately laughing and gasping.

"And what, pray tell, do you find so amusing?" the balrog-slayer asked indignantly.

Janessa just managed to rein herself in, answering breathlessly, "You fully intended to break my door down! What had you so worried? After all your assurances that I am safe here, you felt that necessary? That and you looked pretty funny barreling into my rooms like a bull in a china shop."

The golden-haired elf had the sense to look appropriately chagrined, realizing how out of place his behavior must have appeared. "It is well into the morning. I waited for you at the practice fields. When you did not arrive I became worried and came looking for you." As he spoke the elf took in the woman's disheveled appearance.

"Always trying to be my knight in shining armor eh Glorfindel? You know I can take care of myself."

Used to the woman's gibes the seneschal smiled. "Aye, but it is not like you to miss practice. From your attire I assume I woke you."

"Glory, did it EVER cross your mind that maybe, just maybe you wore me out yesterday and I might need a break and some serious rest? I'm not an elf, remember?"

A fleeting smirk crossed the Elda's face at the woman's question, the elf quickly schooling his face back to a look of concern. "I realize you are not an elf, but for you to progress you have to be pushed."

Jan's eyes narrowed slightly as she caught the smirk. He knows something. Out loud she said, "Yes, yes I know," she waved dismissively, "but I'm only human. Something's gotta give."

"What you are requesting of me is some time to yourself, yes?"

The redhead gave a sigh of relief, "Yes! Exactly! Now shoo! Go!" Jan ushered the ancient elf out of the room, giving him a bright smile as she shut the door.

As soon as the portal was closed Jan slid down the smooth wood surface, curling up with her knees pressed to her chest, arms wrapped loosely about her legs, head tipped back against the door. Last night DID happen, right? So where are the twins? Gods, I am sore. What the hell am I thinking? Are they serious? Or am I just another notch on their bedposts? Jan's head dropped forward against her knees, a deep sigh tearing loose from her chest, incessant doubts coming to roost in her already troubled mind.

Silent tears leaked from the corners of her eyes to fall on her knees. They left. Why did they leave? Gods I am so stupid. What was I thinking? That's just it. I wasn't thinking. I KNOW their reputations.

Quiet sobs shook the small woman's frame, the redhead drawing her robe tighter around her. Everything hurt, her muscles, everything right down to her toes. Instead of being awash in the warm afterglow of someone well-loved Janessa was wracked with guilt and remorse, fully believing she had made the wrong decision and misplaced her trust.

Unable to hold it back, a strangled cry broke forth from the trembling woman.

************

Halfway down the hall Glorfindel froze at the tiny sound. Turning on his heel he strode back to Janessa's door. He pressed his hands flat against the burnished surface, the anguish radiating off the woman almost palpable. The Elda closed his eyes and pressed his forehead against the wood, disappointment in the twins rising through him.

The ancient elf wished he could somehow comfort her, sagely realizing if he knocked on her door now his knowledge of her pain would only serve to humiliate the woman further. The balrog-slayer pushed away from the door, turning to search for Elrond's wayward offspring, his mood now dark and dangerous.

*************

At the first whispered sounds of Janessa's muffled sobs two shadows emerged from the bathing room to which they had retreated when Glorfindel began pounding on the redhead's door. Neither Elladan nor Elrohir wanted to face the legendary balrog-slayer should he find the two or evidence of them in the woman's rooms.

Padding on silent bare feet the identical specters flitted to bracket the doorway leading out of Jan's bedchamber. With unspoken consensus they peered around the edges of the portal, aware of Glorfindel's presence on the other side of the suite's door. Two sets of platinum eyes fell to where the redhead had crumpled at the entrance. Two hearts wrenched as they perceived the depth of her distress. The source of the woman's disquiet not immediately evident, each twin speculated on what could be its source.

Sensing the seneschal's dark mood and retreat the lithe forms detached themselves from the darkness they had hidden in. Still moving silently, they strode forward to frame Janessa, one on each side. In unison, each reached out to the redhead, Elladan placing his hand on the back of her head, Elrohir placing one on her arm.

**********

Janessa's reaction was immediate and violent. A response borne of pure survival instinct, Jan shot to her feet, eyes straight ahead, sprinting for her bedchamber and the solid oak door she could place between herself and her attackers.

Surprised by human reflexes honed by one of the most ancient of elves Elladan fell back, sprawling on the polished floor. Elrohir pulled back, recovering faster than his sibling, giving chase to the spooked woman.

Janessa didn't get far. Her momentum as her feet hit a woven runner caused the rug to slide under her, the redhead's arms spinning as she unintentionally performed a Middle Earth version of carpet-sliding. The woman hit the ground, rolling to recover her footing as the rug crumpled upon impact with a wall.

As she rose to her feet Janessa found her arms pinned to her sides, steel-grey eyes boring into her green ones. She remained tense for several seconds, Elrohir holding her fast as her adrenaline-fogged mind cleared enough to recognize the elf holding her.

Even as cognizance flared in the woman's eyes the younger twin did not let her go. Elladan stepped up next to his sibling, meeting Jan's gaze as it turned his way.

"You're here. But…" Jan's knees buckled, Elrohir supporting both of them as dropped liquidly to the floor atop the tangled rug.

The younger twin released the woman, missing the sudden hardening in her eyes that Elladan managed to catch. The elder twin was almost fast enough as Jan twisted around and lunged the remaining few steps into her bedchamber, slamming the door behind her. Elladan just barely got his fingers out of the door jam before it whacked shut, the sound of the inside bolt sliding home echoing in the silent outer room.

Elladan muttered curses under his breath as Elrohir voiced the obvious, "Think she's mad at us?"
