Chapter 42
*Seven Months Later*
"Ms. Lewis?"
"Yes Michael?" I addressed the raised hand.
"What does he mean when he say's 'our Nuptial Hour'?"
We'd begun A Midsummer Night's Dream for our play analysis, and I was having them breakdown the language so they could understand what was taking place. "The Duke is talking about his wedding to Hippolyta. A nuptial is a wedding."
"Ohh..." He smiled. The lessons continued and soon the bell rang for the class to be over. I was glad that the day was over. Elijah was picking me up and taking me to dinner. I was excited, he said he had something important to talk to me about. He'd been offered a role in another big movie, and I was hoping that he was going to tell me that he got it.
I changed into a nice skirt and shirt, and then waited for Elijah to arrive. He pulled up to the school and handed me a rose as I walked to his car. It was a yellow one, my favorite kind. Though...yellow roses traditionally meant "farewell".
"Hey there." He kissed my hand and helped me into the car. The drive to the restaurant was quiet, save for the Queens of the Stone age coming over the stereo.
Dinner was pleasant. We talked about work mostly. I was pleased to hear that Elijah got the role he wanted. I loved to hear him talk about his jobs. He spoke with such passion and love that it was hard to think about it as a job to him. It was his life. "Sarah?" He said, shaking me out of my thoughts.
"Yes?"
"I've been thinking..." He squirmed in his seat. "Well...I've been thinking...Dammit." He cursed under his breath.
I laughed, "Well I've already been damned honey."
"No, no...That’s not what I meant." He pulled his chair closer and took my hand. Taking a deep breath he began again. "Ever since I saw you walking you dog in front of my house every morning, I'd tried to find a way to introduce myself. I tried to bake something for you...and that didn't work, so I never gave them to you. Then when you got...you know...hit, I had to take the opportunity to befriend you. All jokes of 'hired drivers' aside." He smiled. "When I heard about you and Billy getting hurt, I was scared to death. And...Well....and..."
"And what Elijah?"
"Well...I think I've decided that I need to keep a better eye on you." He pulled out a box and my heart leapt into my throat.
I took it in my hands and opened it. Inside was a small ring, a beautiful blue topaz, the brilliant colour of Elijah's eyes. It was simple, but so beautiful in its simplicity. I smiled at him, and let him put the ring on. "Well I must say...I don't know what to say." I laughed, tears running down my cheeks.
Dom and Billy suddenly appeared from the next table behind us, "Well I believe tha' you should reply 'Yes'. That's just what I think though lass." Billy said.
"Do you think so?" I smiled. "Well...leave it to Billy to toss me a line when I call for it." I laughed, "Well I think I can let you keep an eye on me." I kissed Elijah and grabbed a tissue from Dom. "You two are wankers, how long have you two known?" I demanded.
Dom shrugged and tried to look innocent. But Billy immediately replied, "Three weeks now lass."
"Well…I've known for five." Dom said. "I had to distract you after school when Elijah went to buy the ring."
"The 'Meeting with your Agent that took longer than you thought'?"
Elijah smiled and kissed my nose, "Uh-huh, sorry babe, first and last time I will ever lie to you."
"Promise?"
"Yes, 'till death do we part?"
