Day four: When I awoke the next day I was certain I was going to see the eagles waiting for our departure but they had not arrived. We breakfasted with Galadriel and Celeborn but Haldir was nowhere to be seen. I figured he had been sent back to the border but did not feel it was my place to ask about him. My head was all floaty and dreamy as we and and chatted in the brilliant morning sunlight.

"My dear," saidadriadriel with a twinkle in her sparkly eyes, "I hope you slept well." I honestly didn't know how it could have been that I fell asleep at all but I assured her that I was feeling well-rested. "Good," she continued, "because I have been in consultation with Haldir and we have both reached the same conclusio Sh She paused for a moment and wiped nonexistent crumbs from her face with a daintily embroidered napkin before continuing, "The longer that you and the Twins delay your arrival at Isengard the safer you will be and the more confident we will feel about your safe return home." She gestured to an elf, who had been serving us and clearing away while we ate, who pulled a large, cream-colored envelope from within his tunic and handed it to me. ( It was addressed; "To Mary aldialdir_Lovers") "Open it," said Galadriel.

Within the envelope was a thick card with a hand written invitation from the Lady Eowyn and her brother, Lord Eomer, of Rohan: "We would be most honored to have you and your escort as our guests at Meduseld, the Hall of Mead, in Edoras. For your pleasure we will be providing you with three of our finest Mearas to ride through the Riddermark and an escort of our finest Rohirrim horsemen on your journey here and onward to Isengard."

I groaned with disappointment, "It says we are invited to Rohan and they are going to let us ride their ho but but aren't the eagles going to get angry if they have to fly all this way for nothing? I think I will have to say no."

Galadriel placed her hand over mine and reassured me that the eagles, indeed, had been informed at this last-minute change in our intinerary and she, herself, would be most pleased if I would accept this offer and the delay it would afford us. Of course I said yes. "Good," said Galadriel, "although I already knew you would accept." I forgot she had that great mirror thingy for seeing into the future and I was kind of upset with myself for not asking for a peek, myself, the night before--as if I could think of anything the night before besides Haldir!

"Are they going to send the horses here?" I asked.

"No, you and the Twins willvel vel by boat down the Anduin, so that you can all three witness the Argonath, and will turn off at Sarn Gebir where an honor guard of Rohirrim will be waiting for you with your mearas." I was very excited about this new turn of events and was eager to start but I was still a little sad that I wouldn't see or speak with Haldir before I left. We were led down to the river landing and saw that three of the tiny, leaf-shaped boats were being prepared for our departure. But, best of all, Haldir was there with his brothers, Rumil and Orophin. OUR Haldir was going to be our guide on the river and guess who was going to share her boat with him? Yes, me! Elladan rode with Rumil and Elrohir with Orophin and spirits were high among us as we set off for Rohan. Both the Lady Galadriel and the Lord Celeborn came to say farewell as we cast off and left Lothlorien behind. And, yes, I cried like a baby.

As we traveled down the Anduin our boats remained quite close together so we could chat about Middle Earth history and all of the different occurences that had happened along the shores that glided swiftly past us. Haldir's brothers had spent the evening before with the Twins and had learned all about playing "pirates" and "elf-tag" and they couldn't stop talking about it. Haldir asked many questions about our group activities and about our various members and the Twins chimed in often with their own little "tidbits" of information. Haldir's brothers were eager to learn about the fan fiction contest that included their characters and were quite amused at our habit of constantly bathing our fictional elves in hot, steaming water. "Halflings and men bathe in hot water," Orophin pointed out, "but we rarely need to bathe and, when we do, we prefer the freshness of clear, cold, running-river water." I told him that fictional baths were a fictional device used to undress fictional characters and get them all wet as quickly as possible in our stories because a naked, wet elf seems a lot more fun than a fully clothed dry one! Orophin blushed. Rumil laughed and laughed. Haldir remained stoically quiet throughout the entire exchange did did not appear offended.

We all grew quiet when the Argonath rose in awful majesty on either side of us and when we exited the long tunnel of rock, that the enormous statues were guarding, the Anduin spread out in a wide lake before us and we knew our river journey was nearly over. We could hear the Falls of Rauros and I could not help but think of Boromir and the deadly battle with the orcs that the Fellowship had fought nearby. Waiting for us on the western shore were a group of Rohirrim horse-lords with three saddled mearas for us to ride.

After our boats were pulled up on shore I was suddenly reluctant to say goodbye to Haldir and his brothers but I managed to keep somewhat of a stiff upper lip as I hugged each one and told them again how much they were adored by the members of our group, Haldir_Lovers, and I promised them that other members of our group would surely be coming to visit as soon as they learned how wonderful of a time there was to be had in Middle Earth.

"Say a special hello, and thank you, to Julie and Amy, your, what is the term, 'List-Moms'?" asked Haldir. "They're dedication to our memory and their faithfullness to our characters are highly valued and very much appreciated. Tell them that we love them as much as they love us, as we love all the members of your group, and we salute them for keeping Haldir_Lovers filled with an atmosphere of welcome and warmth."

"They will be so happy to hear that you thought of them," I exclaimed and I would have said more but I was afraid I would start crying. Haldir took my arm gently and escorted me over to the patiently waiting Rohirrim, who had dismounted in the meantime, as we said our final good-byes. Once I was situated on my horse, Haldir turned to the green-clad men and warned them that Grima', the "evil villain," might be in pursuit or lir little party so they must lead us wisely and carefully through the Riddermark. He then gave me a final salute, and a flash of a crooked smile, turned and left. He took my heart with him.

The Twins loved to ride horse-back and were eager to get going so we turned away from the Anduin although I twisted backwards in my saddle and watched the Lorien elf-brothers depart in their boats until they were too tiny to see anymore before I turned back and finally allowed myself to enjoy the ride. The Twins got along fabulously with the Horse-lords and the rest of our journey to Edoras was gloriously uneventful. We did not arrive to Medulsed until late in the evening and were greeted by the Lady Eowyn, her brother, Lord Eomer, and Faramir of Ithelien, who was paying sit sit himself.

The Lady Eowyn led me to a guest room and along the way expressed despair at my eventual meeting with "Wormtongue" who she was quite familiar with. "Do NOT turn your back him, not even for a moment!" she warned. Before leaving me to wash up and change my horse-smelly clothes she said, "Perhaps we will think of a way to delay your arrival at Isengard for at least another day." She wasn't going to get an argument from me!

After I had washed and dressed, the Twins came to escort me to the dining hall for a rousingly entertaining "welcome" banquet. There was music and dancers and jugglers and tumblers who performed in the center of the hall while we feasted on the simple, but delicious, fare. I had my first taste of mead, which is like drinking thick beer, yuck, but I sipped it politely and finally passed it along to Elladan who had no problem finishing my glass for me. The Lady Eowyn and the Lord Faramir were obviously "smitten" with each other and he turned out to be a much more pleasant fellow than the character from The Twin Towers movie. No one in the hall mentioned Grima'. I think it is forbidden to talk about him here which is fine with me.

My legs and butt ache from riding horse-back for most of the day and my Bad Boys are drawing a bath for me to soak in before bed. The Twins and I were promised a trip to Helm's Deep and a tour of the Glittering Caves tomorrow and I don't know which of us is the most excited. Elladan and Elrohir are causing quite a stir amongst the Rohan folk, who are quite unused to elf-visitors from Rivendell, and they have, so far, managed to keep on their best behavior around the adoring throng of young women who hover around them like so many busy bees around two pots of honey!

According to Eowyn, a message has been sent to Isengard to advise Grima' about our arrival being delayed by at least one more day, which, as she sa"He"He will just have to accept because there is really nothing he can do about it." I hope she is right but she knows him better than I do (or ever will!) and I really don't care any more if I ever see Orthanc or Grima's grimey self again. Time for my bath!

Love you, Mary
