Chapter Four
//”What are you doing,” Legolas whispered as he looked through the opening of the trees.
“I am watching Elrohir try to flirt with this elleth,” Elladan answered with a grin. “He claims she is his one true love.”
Legolas snorted and shook his head. “What happened to the one he was wooing last week? He said the same of her.”
“Who knows, but before he is finished he will have gone through the entire population of elf maids in the valley. Claiming them all to be his soul mate.” The older twin shook his head and turned to Legolas. “The worst part is, they all believe him. Elrohir never stays with any longer than a week and they know it, but somehow he sweet talks them into doing anything he wants.”
“He must have said something right, she is kissing him,” the Mirkwood prince said, pointing to the couple.
“I thought this one would give him a bit of a challenge,” he said with a sigh of resignation. “Looks like I was wrong.” Elladan turned away from the tree and started walking away, Legolas followed.
“Why don’t I ever see you with anyone,” the prince asked.
Elladan chuckled and turned to look at him. “I am much more selective and discreet than my brother, but no less hungry.”
Legolas silently cursed the blush that formed on his cheeks. “Is there one who is special to you?”
“They warm my bed, for awhile, and then move on, some of them to Elrohir’s bed.” He sighed, hoping that Legolas wouldn’t press any further.
“I am always unsure who I can trust, who likes me for me, but there is one. We are great friends and I am unsure how to proceed. I do not wish to lose the closeness we have developed between us, but if I don’t say something soon, I will go mad.” He started to say more, but clammed up when Elrohir caught them.//
“You look like someone in love,” Thranduil said, smiling at the twin and sitting next to him on the bench. “Elladan, right?”
“Yes,” he said, standing and bowing in respect.
“Stop it, sit down,” the king said, still smiling. “You have known me for a long time and should know I do not expect such from you when we are alone.”
“It is a hard habit to break, sire,” Elladan said, giving him a small smile.
“So, tell me who is the lucky elleth that brought that lovely smile to your face a minute ago?”
“It was no elleth, I am afraid, but it does not matter who it was, it cannot be,” the twin told the king.
“With love, all things are possible, pen neth,” he counseled. “Perhaps the time isn’t right or there is some other reason it can’t be right now, but the future holds many promises, Elladan. My son always talked about the promises of the future, he counted them when they came to pass. He was so full of love and light, it pains me to think of him gone.”
Elladan sat there biting back the tears that threatened to spill any moment. “I am sorry that you lost him. He was a great friend to us.”
“You have always been friends with all of my children, you and your brother. You must miss him, as well.”
“Yes, we do,” Elladan said, looking away. “If you will excuse me, sire, I need to go.” He just couldn’t sit there and listen to Thranduil talk about Legolas and not tell him how much he was loved. He stood to leave, but the king grabbed his wrist.
“Wait, Elladan, I have something for you,” he said, reaching into his pocket. “Legolas wanted you to have this.” He held up a necklace that had belonged to his friend. “He said you would understand what it meant.”
“Yes, I know what it means,” the twin said, taking the necklace in his hand and rushing away.
By the time Elladan made it to his room, he was crying. He knew exactly what the necklace meant. Legolas always said he would give it to the one person he loved more than anyone. It meant that the prince had loved him, as well. His heart was breaking, knowing this and not being able to tell him in return that he had always dreamed of him, wanted him, loved him. He fell on his bed, the tears continuing to fall, slipping into a restless sleep.
