Chapter 4.

Glorfindel watched as Brennil slept peacefully. He wanted to wake her up before he left to tend to his duties but decided to let her rest.
“sleep well.” He whispered softly in his ear before moving quietly from the bed and pulling on his clothes. As he stood by the door, he watched her for a while longer then stepped outside the room.
“Elladan?” Glorfindel raised an eyebrow slightly, not having expected anyone to be there.
“ Erestor says you are to see him in his office.” Elladan replied.
“Did he say why?” Glorfindel asked, not sure why he had a bad feeling about it.
“ My only guess is to discuss what he heard last night” Elladan replied. He shrugged slightly and wished Glorfindel good luck before he walked away. Glorfindel merely shook his head and made his way to his Erestor’s office, wondering what it was he could have heard.

“ You wanted to speak with me?” Glorfindel commented as he came into the office. The look Erestor gave him had him stop in his tracks
“ Sit.” Erestor replied. Glorfindel had not missed the slight growl in the advisor’s voice as he walked over to the seat opposite Erestor’s desk and sat down.
“ I want you to stay away from Brennil.” He said as calmly as he could manage
“What?” Glorfindel replied quickly.” You cannot be serious, Erestor?” He added.
“ I am” Erestor said. “ She is my daughter and I will decide what is best for her.”
Glorfindel sat there staring at the elf silently. The elf in front of him seemed different then the Erestor he knew.
“ Is it not her choice?” He finally asked. “ She is well past her age of majority.”
Erestor did growl this time and he tapped his fingers on his desk. He glared at Glorfindel for a minute before he could reply
“ Yes she is but even at three hundred years old she is still too young to be making life altering decisions” he had replied
“ You are not being fair” Glorfindel told him. “ have you even considered that maybe this was meant to happen?”
Erestor had closed his eyes briefly at Glorfindel’s comment. He had in fact considered this but refused to believe it.
“ You are not right for her.” He said finally. “ She needs someone who can always be there for her.”
Glorfindel almost laughed at that if it had not been for the look in Erestor’s eyes
“ And you do not think that I can be?” He questioned.
“Not in the way she needs.” Erestor was quick to reply. “ Glorfindel, you risk your life each time you go out to the patrol the borders. Should I allow this to happen there is a greater risk of her being hurt should you ever not return.”
Glorfindel sat back and sighed. He did not want to admit that what Erestor was saying was true.
“ and you believe that by her being with Lindir will be better?” he asked quietly
“Yes” Erestor nodded.” At least with Lindir she does not risk receiving news that he was killed.”
Glorfindel looked away, staring at out the window silently.
“You seem to be convinced this is what will happen.” Glorfindel replied after a short while.
“ Can you guarantee that it will not?” Erestor commented. “ That you will return each time you go and are faces with Orcs and all the other threats we’ve dealt with here in Rivendell?”
Glorfindel looked at his old friend, wanting to be able to promise him that he would always return but he knew the risks better then anyone.
“ No I cannot.” He replied, looking away again.
“ Then so be it.” Erestor replied. “ I shall tell Lindir of my wishes” he said.
Glorfindel merely nodded and stood up to leave the room without another word to Erestor. As he passed Elrond in the halls his only acknowledgement of the Lord of Imladris was a slight nod.

Elrond watched as Glorfindel made his way down a flight of stairs. Shaking his head he made his way into his Advisor’s office.
“ I just saw Glorfindel” Elrond said quietly from where he stood by the door.
“ He is not right for her.” Erestor replied, looking over some papers and not at Elrond. He took a deep breath and finally told Elrond what the meeting had been about.
Elrond moved to Erestor’s desk and sat on the edge as he looked down at the elf who had been his advisor for so many years.
“ I seem to remember I was told the same thing once” he said calmly. “ Celeborn gave me the same speech, not that it did any good.” He added
“ It is not the same thing.” Erestor added, finally looking up at Elrond. “ you had loved Celebrian since the moment you saw her.” He added
“ I did.” He agreed. “ and I still do” he said softly, offering a small smile to his friend. “ that, however did not stop Celeborn from trying to find, as he put it, someone better for his daughter.”
Erestor would have laughed at that but just could not find the strength to do it.
“You mean well, Erestor” He said. “ but not even you can change what the heart wants.” Elrond told him
“ He’s not her type” Erestor replied, his voice sounding less convincing then he had wanted.
“ Because he is a warrior?” Elrond arched an eyebrow. “ One would think that any father would be glad to have his daughter be with someone who can protect her as well as Glorfindel can.” He added
“ And get killed doing it.” Erestor added. “ where does leave her then?”
Elrond sighed softly as he looked at Erestor. He knew that no amount of convincing from him would prove to Erestor that Glorfindel was indeed meant to be with Brennil. He would just have to see it for himself.
“ Keep on thing in mind, my old friend” Elrond said calmly. “ When have you ever known Glorfindel to turn down any elleth in the past” he said as he stood up.” Yes he did so just the other day” he added as he made his exit, leaving Erestor to his own thoughts.

* 3 weeks later*

Elladan walked over to Glorfindel when he had spotted him in the training grounds. He grabbed his shoulder, knowing the elf knew he was there and spun him around
“What game are you playing?” He hissed, crossing his arms over his chest.
“ I do not have a clue as to what you are referring to.” Glorfindel lied. He knew exactly what Elladan was here to say.
“ You convince Brennil that is was her you had wished to be with then you ignore or avoid her since then?” Elladan replied.
“ Do not interfere in what you do not understand, Elladan” Glorfindel said.
“ What is not to understand?” Elladan asked. “ You got what you wanted then cast her aside” he added.
Glorfindel’s deep growl had Elladan backing up a few steps.
“ That is not what happened.” He hissed, glaring at the younger elf.
“ It is what it seems.” Elladan replied, taking a few deep breaths
“ Growing up you were more then just my tutor” Elladan said. “ you were my mentor. I wanted to be like you but now, seeing how you treat those who care about you I won’t have anything to do with you” he said.
When Glorfindel was about to say something, Elladan held up his hand and shook his head.
“ Let me finish.” He growled. “Brennil has approached you more then once and each time you merely turn and walk away, without so much as a single word to her.” He said. “ She has seen you turn down another corridor when you see her so she knows you are avoiding her.”
Glorfindel sighed, trying to control his anger and his guilt. It had never been his intension to hurt Brennil and knowing that is exactly what he was doing.
“ She should be with Lindir.” Glorfindel said, repeating Erestor’s words. He arched an eyebrow as Elladan actually laughed.
“ Lindir refused Erestor’s offer.” He said. “ Even Lindir told Erestor that he has no interest in Brennil other then friendship and thinks you should be with her.” He added
Glorfindel was not sure if he liked hearing this news or if it only made him feel even worse. He was sure Erestor would merely find someone else for Brennil, someone more suited for her.
“ Then it is his loss.” Glorfindel replied, looking down at the ground as he had said the words.
“ Yes it is.” Elladan nodded.” As it is yours” he added. “ I am the one who watches Brennil crying herself to sleep every night. She does not eat and barely talks to anyone other than myself or Elrohir.”
Glorfindel looked at him, hating himself even more for what he was doing to Brennil, however Erestor had made himself quite clear that he was to stay away from her.
“ Have it your way then.” Elladan said when Glorfindel did not reply. “ But be warned Glorfindel, if you choose not to court her then I will” he added. Without waiting for a reply the oldest son of Elrond turned and walked away.

Brennil had been standing on her balcony when she saw Elladan return. She bit her lip as she watched him and saw him look up at her and shake his head. She sighed softly and turned around, her head lowering slowly. She pushed past Elrohir and entered her room, asking him to leave her alone.
“ I will see you at supper” she said softly as she lay down on her bed.
Elrohir stood next to the bed and was about to say something.
“ Please, Elrohir” she pleaded softly.” I just wish to be alone for a while.”
With a sigh, Elrohir leaned over and kissed her head.
“ He is a fool Brennil.” He replied softly before he left the room. He met with Elladan along the hall and turned his twin around to walk with him.
“ She needs time alone.” He told Elladan.
“ I have never seen him this stubborn before” Elladan replied, referring to Glorfindel.
“Nor have I.” Elrohir replied as the walked down the stairs. “ I do not understand why he does not see what everyone else does.” He added.
“ Everyone except Erestor.” Elladan told his twin.” I have a feeling Father’s advisor may be playing a big part in all of this,” He replied.
As the twins reached the landing they saw Glorfindel walking in as well. Elladan arched an eyebrow as Eithel made her way to Glorfindel.
“ It seems we are not the only one who knows that Glorfindel has been avoiding Brennil” Elladan said.
“ so I can see.” Elrohir added
“ So he’s made his choice.” Elladan watched as Eithel wrapped her arm around Glorfindel’s and made her way with him towards where her room was located.

Neither one of the twins had seen Brennil on the landing above. She to had seen Eithel walk up to Glorfindel and how he had walked away with her, not from her as he had done with her these past few weeks.
‘and I shall make mine’ she thought her self when Elladan’s comment had reached her ears. She turned silently back to her room and packed a few things she would need. She wanted Glorfindel and it was obvious to her that he did not want her.
“then I will not stay here.” She said as she grabbed her things. She wrote a quick note to her father, explaining she would return to Lorien. As she stepped out into the hall she stopped an elleth and asked her to deliver this to her father’s room. When the elleth agreed she turned and left, heading straight for the stables. She took a last look at the manor before she raced out of the gates to Rivendell, her plan was to reach Lorien in as quickest time as possible.

Elladan sat at the table when supper was being served. He saw Brennil’s empty seat and shared a concern look with his twin.
“ Perhaps she just fell asleep.” Elladan said, Elrohir nodded in agreement even as they both looked over to where Brennil would normally sit.
All through the meal, either Elladan or Elrohir would look over when someone walked into the hall. Each time it was never Brennil and the twins concerns increased even more. Elladan noticed that even Glorfindel had been looking at Brennil’s empty chair every so often.
“ Ada?” Elrohir’s voice broke the silence.” Have you seen Brennil since before our meal?” He asked
“ No , my son I have not” Elrond replied, raising his eyebrow slightly .” has something happened?” he questioned.
Before either twin could reply, Erestor came bursting into the hall, Brennil’s note clutched tightly in his hand
“ She’s gone” He said, trying to catch his breath as he spoke. “ She said she was returning to Lorien.” He finally managed to get out
“ alone?” Elladan was on his feet before anyone replied, Elrohir was quick to follow.
Elrond stopped the twins just before they had rushed out of the room.
“ She will have taken the shorted path there.” He told them, glancing at Glorfindel as well.
Realizing what Elrond had just said, Glorfindel was on his feat quickly and knocking his chair off it’s legs as he stood up.
“ Glorfindel?” Erestor looked at him
“ She will be riding right into an orc camp” he replied, rushing out of the room with the twins right on his heals.
“ This is my fault.” Erestor said after Elrond had lead him into his office.
“ We cannot change what is already done.” Elrond replied softly. “ what we can do is learn from our mistakes and fix them.” He added.
“ If they do not find her in time…” Erestor said, unable to even finish the comment.
“ They will.” Elrond replied, praying he was right.
“ How do I fix this?” Erestor asked, sounding defeated.
“ Open your eyes and take a look at what is in her heart.” Elrond replied, walking over and placing his hands on Erestor’s shoulders.
Erestor could only nod in replying to look out the window and silently pleading with the Valor to keep Brennil safe.

Brennil slowed her horse down when the animal showed signs of tiring. She had rode him hard once outside of Rivendell and with the night growing darker with each passing moment was making it hard for her to see where they were. She had the feeling she was being watched and that made her even more nervous. She had at least been with Glorfindel on her way to Rivendell, now she was all alone.
“ we can do this” she said quietly, reaching down to pet her horse’s neck softly.
It was only when the horse reacted suddenly that she realized she was in trouble. The scent that reached her senses almost made her sick to her stomach and sent her dear into overdrive. Decided her only option was to turn back, she turned her horse quickly. The last thing she saw was the orc’s blade as it came down towards her. She never heard her own scream as it echoed into the night’s darkness. The orcs had no idea that they had not been the only ones to hear her scream Glorfindel’s name…
