iv. My Fault

iv. My Fault

Dom never would have imagined that he would be too early for the dinner. This was a real nightmare. He had tried everything that had been possible to delay, even tried to get detention, but the great gods of all time weren’t on his side today. School ended two hours earlier for a teacher got sick and they hadn’t been able to find a replacement. He ended up with Billy accompanying him to his house.

“What’s going on with ye, Dommie?”, Billy suddenly asked, realizing his boyfriend’s troubled face.

“Well…There is…” He halted and sighed deeply. “It’s nothing. I’m just having a…headache, is all.”

You stupid son of a fucking bitch! Dom shouted in his head. Why did you do that, huh? Why did you just lie to the only person that means something to you? Dom went on pushing his bike beside him, and with every step they came nearer and nearer to his house.

“Ye know what, if ye can’t tell meh what’s going on, then just say it, okay? It’s just, Ah’m worried about y-“

“Can I come to your house? Later? After dinner?”, Dom asked out of the blue.

“Yeah. Of course. Ma Dad isn’t at home anyway.” Billy blushed. “Uhm…Ah guess Ah see ye later then? Call meh shortly before ye leave yer house, okay?”

He placed a short kiss on Dom’s cheek and turned left. And that was also the sign for Dom that he arrived at his own. He shot a look inside the garage, but nope. Only mum’s car. No strange, alien, black limousine parking in the entrance. Well, it was not time for the guy to come yet. It was, oh my god, it was five o’clock! Two hours! That were like 120 minutes. And that was like one sixth of the time he usually spent watching Lord of The Rings! He sighed deeply. He had no choice. His mother would be waiting for him. Don’t disappoint her this time, Dom!, he told himself and unlocked the front door.

“’m home!”

His mother came out of the kitchen. “You’re here? You’re early, but that’s even better!” She smiled at him and vanished in the doorway again.

After washing his hands and bringing his stuff up into his room he returned to the kitchen finding himself in what looked like a buffet. Roast beef, potatoes, salad, soup bubbling in a pot on the stove and a pie in the oven.

“Mum? You’re aware of the fact that we’ll be only three persons?”

“Why? Do you think I’ve made too much? Oh, damn it, I knew it!” She let out a desperate cry and looked around.

“No, Mum. I’m just saying, you know. It all looks…” He paused to take out a cut tomato out of the salad. “…and tastes very good.”

His mother giggled at that.

“Can I help you with something?”, Dom went on.

“No, it’s all right. I’ll call you when I need you, okay?”

Dom didn’t need to hear that twice and so he ran up into his room. There he let himself fall onto his bed and closed his eyes for a moment. Billy had said to him that he loved him. He was worried about Dom. He cared about him. Dom started thinking. When he thought of Billy a warm feeling filled his body. Yes, he loved Billy. Definitely. No doubt about that. And why was he so scared to say it? Scared to be touched?
He rolled onto his left side facing his whole room now. His look fell on the little night drawer on which a lot pf photographs were positioned. He seized one of them and stared at it for a long time. It was his most beloved picture. There was him, and his mum, and his dad. It had been taken by a stranger in the park. It was made shortly before the accident.

“Dad…”, Dominic whispered with shining eyes, pressed the little frame to his chest and fell asleep.

Loud voices. Anger. Fury.

“I hate you! I hate you!!”

Then suddenly white lights everywhere. Wheels screeching, crashing noises, scaring narrowness.

The smell of blood and metal in the air.

“Dad? Dad! DAD!”

“Dominic! Dommie! Wake up!”

With a jolt Dom was up and looked with terrified eyes at his mother.

“What happened?”, he asked scared.

“Nothing. I came to wake you up. He’ll soon be here. Could you help me lay the table please?”

Dominic nodded, rubbed his eyes and stood up. The picture fell to the floor.

“What’s this?”, Dom’s mother asked and picked it up. “Oh my, you still have it? I thought it got lost.” She smiled sadly. “That was a really good day.”, she whispered and returned it to Dom.

Both went down into the dining room and started decorating the table for 3 persons.

“Mum. Do you think it’s my fault Dad died?”

His mum looked up with big eyes. “Who said that?”, she asked back, anger vibrating in her voice.

“No one. I just…I may have caused the accident.” Dom put a fork next to a knife, his hand shaking a little.

His mother approached him and embraced her son. “Don’t you ever think something like that, you hear me? It’s not your fault.”

“Okay. I just… Are you crying, Mum?”

“No, I’m not.”, she sniffed. At that moment the door bell rang. “He’s here! Oh my God, I must look terrible.” She wiped some tears from her face.

“No you don’t, Mum. You look great.”, Dominic said and went to open the door.
