Chapter 4

Chapter 4

The young women fled through the trees deeper and deeper into the old forest. She tried to remember where the elves had dwelt. Exhausted she rested under a tree. The food her father had given her was now gone and she started to eat wild clover.

Marigold leaned her back against an old beech tree and her head sunk to her chest. She fell into a deep sleep. As she woke up again, night had settled over the forest. Her heart was beating fast. In the darkness of the forest she was stricken with fear of wild beasts. She got back on to her hurting feet. Never in her whole life had she been walking and running so long. Her ankles were sore and her soles had become bloody.

She tumbled a little and started to walk again. Suddenly, she saw a shimmer in the distance. The elves, she now knew where to go. Marigold quickened her pace to reach them. But every time that she thought to have come closer, she realized that she was still far away.

The light in the distance became weaker as the morning started to break. She became desperate because she wanted to reach the elves. Now she was worried that she would lose them. She grabbed another handful of wild clover and shoved it into her mouth. The bitterness of the herb did not help against the hunger anymore. She needed to eat for the child's sake.

Finally, the light was gone. The sun radiated over the trees and Marigold did not see the shimmer of the elves anymore. In deep despair she fell to her knees and started to cry uncontrollable. Her loud sobs echoed through the woods as she dug her fingernails into the moss and screamed her sadness out.

"Why do you cry so loud?" Marigold suddenly heard a soft male voice behind her. She turned around and looked straight at the grey leather boots of an elf. He tilted his head and cocked an eyebrow. The elf was clad in grey and had dark cloak wrapped around his shoulders. On his back he carried a longbow. He bent down to her and reached his hands out to help her to get up again.

"I am searching for the elves that were in my forest. Can you show me the way?" Marigold choked back a sob.
The male elf shook his head and answered "There are none of our kind, here."
"But they were here! Saelbador told me to turn to them." Marigold said, shocked with disbelief.
"Saelbador?" The elf asked surprised.
"Yes, Saelbador. I am wed to him."
Suddenly the elf's face grew hard and arrogantly he countered, "There are none here. They sailed west. As for Saelbador, he has been sent to the king's realm. You will not find him here."

The elf threw his hood over his chestnut brown hair and turned to leave.
"Master elf, I need to find him. Please help me!" She said on the verge of hysteria.

He turned to Marigold. "I am Lithônion of Doriath. I am on my way to the sea. I can not help you find him. But I will show you the way and I will share my provisions with you."

Lithônion took her hand again and led her to a fallen tree. He motioned for her to sit down. Out of a pouch he took dry bread. "This is elvish way bread. A small bite will fill you for days and nourish the child you carry under your heart." Marigold glanced at him, surprised. She did not show yet, but he had known and she wondered how. Had her father sent him to be her guardian angel?

"The way is dangerous through the woods. I will lead you out of it. From where I will leave you, you will have to turn north east and over the mountains. But fear strikes my heart, that you will not reach the realm of the king before the first snow falls. I will send message with the birds that you are on your way to reunite with him. But now sleep and regain your strength. I will watch over you," he said, bringing her back from her thoughts.

Marigold felt safe beside Lithônion. But she felt chills and his cold grey eyes seemed to pierce her. She instantly knew, that he did not like her kind very much. She pulled her cloak over her shoulders and laid down in the moss. Lithônion stood several feet away from her, staring into the woods, singing softly to himself.

Hours later Marigold woke up, refreshed and feeling better. Lithônion had made a little fire and had caught something to eat for her. But before he shared the food with her, he wanted her to drink out of one of his skins. A sweet and clear liquid filled Marigold's mouth and instantly she felt very strong.

"We will leave now. Follow me." Lithônion simply started to walk away. Marigold needed to run to catch up with him again. And so the days past. Lithônion did not talk much to her, only if it was necessary but Marigold was happy to have him guarding and showing her the way.
They crossed glades and forest meadows. swamps and rocks. Once they arrive at the river, Lithônion threw a thin rope across it.

Marigold wondered what he was going to do, but the elf lifted her on his back and balanced himself as much as possible over the thin rope. The young woman was impressed. And when he allowed her to rest, she dreamed of meeting her beloved again and how their life would be together.

Lithônion seemed never to sleep, but Marigold observed that he sung the whole time to himself as he walked in a trance. He would stand watching over her with open eyes, observing everything around them just to wake her up at some point and make her journey again.

Time went on as they traveled over the roots and fallen trees. One day, Lithônion suddenly stopped. "Our journey is over. Two hours north of here, you will find a dwelling. Go straight and do not waste time for the night will come soon. You will find people of your kind there. Seek there a trader in that village. Tell him Lithônion sends you and he will provide you with food and shelter for a night. Leave the town to the east and then travel north," he stopped and studied her from head to toe. "But your child will be born before you reach the mountains."

With these words he turned around and before Marigold could thank him he had disappeared in the darkness of the forest again. The young woman held her bag tight. Lithônion had given her all his way bread and one skin with the clear liquid. He had told her, that she would need it more than he did. Marigold started to walk north.
