Chapter 4

Chapter 4

Elrond and Erestor were waiting for the two other members of Imladris’ security council to arrive. Elrond sighed impatiently and took a sip of the cool water from his goblet, relishing the feel of it on the back of his dry throat.

Erestor sat himself to Elrond’s left at the beautifully carved wooden table. The edges of which were carved into winding vines and leaves that led to the table legs, giving the impression of the table being carved from one single massive piece of wood. The tabletop was polished to a brilliant shine and upon it Erestor arranged the reports for the day’s meeting.

Elrond began to lightly drum his fingers on the smooth surface, a sure sign of his growing annoyance.

The sound of laughter drifted closer to the two waiting elves. Glorfindel and Carandhol nodded their greetings and gave their morning salutations. Elrond and Erestor responded in kind as the two captains sat in their designated seats.

“Shall we begin?” Erestor said to his lord. Elrond nodded his consent.

“Lord Elrond and I have gone over your reports on the border patrols for this past week. It seems like a blessedly uneventful week it was at that,” added the chief counselor.

Erestor’s presence commanded strength and confidence in a council room; it was as if he became a different elf, an elf that exuded self-assurance and demanded nothing less than respect for himself and for his lord.

“Is there anything you wish to add to this report before we move to the next topic on our agenda?” Erestor looked into Glorfindel’s eyes. “Anything? Lord Seneschal?”

“Oh, yes,” added Glorfindel, “I noticed on my last patrol that one of the walls near the South Tower had a crack in it.”

Erestor scribbled on his parchment. “I will have someone check this out today.”

“That is all” shrugged Glorfindel.

“Captain Carandhol, do you wish to add any observations to this report?” Erestor asked into his husband’s eyes.

“Nay, I have nothing to add of import,” replied Carandhol.

“Very well then, next we need to discuss finances,” stated Erestor.

Just then, Carandhol tried to suppress a yawn but failed miserably. Then he added another, somewhat louder than the first.

“Captain,” glared Erestor icily, “If you cannot give Lord Elrond your full attention, then I suggest you leave this meeting.”

Carandhol glared back at Erestor but turned to Elrond, “I beg your forgiveness my lord.”

Elrond just nodded his acceptance while waving his hand for Erestor to continue.

“Lord Glorfindel, you have come under budget once again. Are you sure you are getting everything you need for your patrols? Do you not need anything for the barracks?” asked a genuinely impressed Erestor.

“With Lord Elrond’s permission, perhaps we can give our troops a bonus from time to time with the extra savings?” inquired Glorfindel in earnest.

Elrond looked at Erestor, “Yes, that can be arranged.” Erestor nodded and scribbled this down as well.

“This then is the conclusion of today’s security meeting, unless anyone wants to add anything?” Erestor looked each elf there in the eye.

“No? Well then, in conclusion, thank you for all your hard work and effort in protecting Imladris.” This time Erestor smiled slightly to the two captains.

“Yes, thank you, my friends, and keep up the good work,” Elrond told them sincerely. All stood to leave as Erestor gathered the reports.

“By the way, I heard that there were quite the celebrations last night in the Hall of Fire,” added Elrond in peaked interest, before the two captains left.

“Aye, there was,” smiled Glorfindel.

“Oh, and what was the occasion?” asked Elrond curiously.

“We were celebrating Carandhol’s wedded anniversary,” answered Glorfindel easily.

“Truly?” Then Elrond turned to Erestor and folded his arms across his chest. “I am hurt, dear counselor, for I was not invited.”

Erestor looked deep into Elrond’s eyes, “nor was I.” And with that, he left the room.

Elrond just stared after his advisor and friend. He saw the truth in Erestor’s words and the hurt in his eyes.

Glorfindel’s eyes widened at the implications of that answer. He looked to Carandhol as if for an explanation. His friend just shrugged his shoulders. Glorfindel felt a sudden pang of guilt. They were so used to Erestor not being around Carandhol in public, that they forgot he was the other half to the celebration.

Elrond looked deeply into Carandhol’s eyes. “That is a strange way to celebrate one’s wedded day, without one’s mate, is it not?” Elrond asked a startled Carandhol.

Carandhol could not keep Elrond’s gaze for long. “Not for us,” He stammered and quickly left as well.

Elrond shook his head in disgust as he and Glorfindel left the room as well.

“I feel I have done wrong in celebrating this with Carandhol,” Glorfindel told Elrond truthfully. “I never even thought it strange that Erestor was not even there.”

“What is wrong is that no one sees this,” sighed Elrond as he turned towards the family wing. “Looking back over his shoulder he told an awakening Glorfindel, “Though I can assure you that Erestor does.”

Glorfindel just stared after his lord until he was no longer in view.
