Chapter 3

The dark sky made it almost impossible to recognize the coming of morning. The birds that usually sang cheerfully at this hour hid quietly among the trees, seemingly vanished. Legolas had not moved from where he dropped to the ground after Elladan rode off. Lost in sorrow, he did not hear Glorfindel approach.

“Why didn’t you wake me?” the seneschal’s voice came from behind.

Legolas didn’t bother to turn to his friend. “What for?”

“I thought you would want to ride out early,” Glorfindel sounded concerned.

Legolas shrugged.

“Where is Elladan?”

Finally, Legolas turned around. His eyes were read and shone with unshed tears. “He left, Glorfindel. He left me…”

Glrofindel settled down beside the distraught prince and wrapped an arm around his shoulder. It was then that Legolas began to cry.

“Hush,” Glorfindel cooed. “He will think things over and return.” When Legolas shook his head, he added, “and if he does not, the pain will pass and you will find someone else.”

The prince looked at Glorfindel, cheeks stained with dried and fresh tears. “I promise,” said Gorfindel.

The sky rumbled and rain began to pour down in heavy drops. “Come,” said Glorfindel. “You we don’t want our clothes to get wet, do we?” Legolas complied, and they quickly stripped themselves of their clothing and put it into their bags, taking cover beneath an old oak.

Legolas had stopped crying but only continued to stare into the distance and rocked himself back and forth until Glorfindel took him into his arms to hold him still. The seneschal had no other intention than to comfort the younger Elf. What he failed to realize was that Legolas, in his current state, and in their current position, might choose to seek another kind of comfort.

Turning his gaze on Glorfindel, Legolas leaned in. Eyes focused on the younger Elf’s sensuous mouth, Glorfindel contemplated turning away, but found himself unable to move. Legolas’ needy tongue slipped between his lips. It told of Legolas’ sorrow more than the prince could ever express in words. As he realized what he had allowed to happen, Glorfindel pulled away.

“Is there something wrong?” Legolas panted with a hint of annoyance.

Glorfindel sighed, knowing that whatever he said or did at that moment would have a negative impact on their friendship sooner or later. If he refused Legolas, and explained to him why, the younger Elf’s feelings would be hurt. On the other hand, if he allowed Legolas to have things his way, the prince would regret his actions once his heartache had passed. “Legolas, you are vulnerable at the moment…”

“You do not want me?” Legolas asked, pulling away. “Am I not good enough for you?”

“Legolas, It would be so easy to give in to you. But tomorrow you would regret it and our friendship would be at stake. Besides, there is another reason why you are bringing me home, isn’t there?”

Legolas nodded, tears flooding his eyes again.

“Do not weep, mellon. Thy sky is already doing that for you.” (friend)

Glorfindel searched through his belongings, retrieving a small bottle.

“What is that?” Legolas asked.

“Avsleep-inducing elixir.” When Legolas gave him a questioning look, Glorfindel added, “It has kept me from going mad last time I was around your father.”

Curious as to what Glorfindel meant, the prince’s heartache kept him from asking any more questions. He took the bottle and poured a small amount of the sweet herb liquor into his mouth.

Legolas could feel his muscles relax and his vision begin to blur only minutes after swallowing the potion. Hardly any more time passed before it took full effect and he fell into a dreamless, healing sleep.

*

The following day Legolas was able to continue on the journey home, although his heart was a chunk of lead that felt as if it were going to sink to the ground.

From the corner of his eye, Legolas watched his companion as the rode. He remembered parts of what happened the night before, and his face reddened with shame. “Why did you resist?” He heard himself ask, wishing he had not.

“Aren’t you glad, now, that I did?”

Legolas briefly looked away. “Aye,” he said, turning his eyes on Glorfindel again.

“It would have been hard to face each other today,” Glofindel explained. “And it would have done nothing to aid our friendship.”

The prince nodded in silent agreement. “Nevertheless, it is not like you to turn down sex.”

Glorfindel’s lips curved into a lackluster smile. “Would it have been more like me to take advantage of a heartbroken friend?”

“I am sorry… I did not mean it like that,” said Legolas, casting his eyes down in shame, but the seneschal waved it off.

“I take no offence. ‘Tis understandable that you would think that way. But you are dear to me, Legolas. I would never to anything to harm you, no matter how tempting it was. Even had I not decided to mend my ways.”

“What do you mean,” Legolas raised his brows in curiosity.

“It may have taken me long enough,” Glorfindel began, “but I have come to realize that despite the numerous trysts I feel lonely, my life empty and meaningless. I believe I am ready to settle for one Elf whom I really care about… if I could only find him or her.”

Legolas found himself smiling dreamily. Hearing Glorfindel’s confession filled him with hope that plans would work out well and that his Adar might find happiness again. For a moment the prince nearly forgot his own sorrows.
