Chapter 4.
In the past few days Nessa's visits to the stables were few and far
between. It was not that she did not wish to pay visits to a few
horses and watch the riders but it was getting harder to fight the
urge tde. de. She was not yet sure she was ready for that. Nor did
she wish to give up riding with Eomer.
As usual just thinking of Eomer would make her smile. They had not
spent any time together since the last ride they had shared.
Something was wrong in the palace Eowyn had told her. Theoden was no
longer himself and Grima's attitude had also been changing. Yet
somewhere through all this Eomer still proved to her she was never
far from his thoughts and had a single rose delivered to her on a
daily basis.
As days passed Nessa took in how the city changed. No longer did
children run and play, instead staying close to their parents with a
look in their innocent eyes that Nessa felt resembled fear. Even the
old people seemed more withdrawn. What once was a friendly place now
felt cold almost as if death was upon them.
" You feel it as well." Eowyn startled Nessa as she came up behind
her. " The darkness."
Nessa watched as Her good friend stepped up beside her. The sadness
in her eyes was clear.
"Yes" Nessa replied softly. The two woman stood in silence for quite
sometime. Both taking comfort in the others presence, both lost in
their own thoughts.
" He misses riding with you" Eowyn spoke softly after awhile.
" We will have other chances." She sighed softly. It was not so much
the riding she missed it was more spending time with Eomer. The
feeling of things around her as of late she longed to feel the
safety of his arms around her.
" I must return" Eowyn voice sounded tired" I do not wish to leave
Uncle for too long"
Nessa nodded in understanding then could only stand and watch as her
friend rushed back in the direction she had first come.
A sudden feeling came over Nessa and it left her breathless.
Something told her things would get much worse before they could get
better.
A hard knock upon her door had awakened her. Unsure whether to
answer at first kept Nessa from moving. It was only when she heard
Eomer's voice did she rush to open the door. The night appeared
darker now then ever.
"I have awakened you."Eomer voice had faltered ever so slightly.
Nessa did not need to see his face to know something was wrong
" It is alright"She replied " what has you so troubled?"
She had reached for his hand and gently pulled him inside allowing
the door to close behind him.
"Theodred has not yet returned," Nessa knew what was coming next. He
was to go in search of the prince, his cousin. " I leave soon. I did
not wish to leave without seeing you." He raised her hand to his
mouth and gently kissed it before pulling her to him.
Without any hesitation Nessa accepted his kiss, parting her lips to
give him the entry he searched for.
" I ask two things of you till my return." He slowly traced his
thumb over her cheek. She was still pressed up against him. " Keep
company with My sister, I feel she needs a friend."
Nessa gave a small nod, knowing he was not finished.
" Most of all I wish for both you and Eowyn to keep your distance
from Grima." Eomer kissed her forehead as he took notice to the
worry now in her eyes. " I fear I no longer trust him."
Nessa's eyes closed as she leaned against him. He was making things
sound as if he was not coming back. Her first instinct was to just
hold on to him and refuse to let him go.
" Will you be gone long?" She knew he felt her shiver as his arms
tightened around her. Her head now resting on his shoulder. Both
wishing they could stay this way forever.
" I will return once I find my cousin."Eomer replied quietly. Nessa
could only nod. She really wished for him to stay.
Standing in silence somehow seemed comforting to them both. All to
soon Nessa heard the words she could only wish he would take back
"I must go." He placed a gentle kiss on her lips before pulling
himself away.
"Eomer." She could not keep from calling to him once he was
outside. "Please be careful"
He turned back to her and once again pulled her into his arms.
Tangling his hands in her hair as he kissed her with a deep passion.
Before Nessa could say anything else he was gone. She could see no
sign of him in the darkness.
" Be safe." She whispered into the night before closing her door.
Returning to her bed she knew this night would be a sleepless one.
"He is gone" The distress in Eowyn's voice left Nessa with a sinking
feeling. Not more then a few hours had passed since Eomer had
returned with a badly wounded Theodred. Nessa had only caught his
eyes for a brief second before he had went with Theodred.
"Prince Theodred?" Nessa sinking feeling grew as Eowyn shook her
head. "The who?"
"Eomer."Eowyn's tears " He has been banished."
Nessa eyes widened. Surely she had heard her wrong. The king would
not banish one of his own kin.
" It was Grima." Eowyn whispered not wishing to be overheard. " I
know it."
Nessa nodded, In her heart she also knew this to be true. She had
seen how Grima used his now evil ways to get what he wanted.
" When did he leave?"
Eowyn looked at her for a few seconds trying to read the look thNessNessa now had in her eyes.
" A short time ago, He was forced out." Nessa gave Eowyn a quick hug
then turned and headed to the one place she had not been to in a
awhile.. The stables.
"Where is Eomer?"She startled the young boy who was taking care of
the horse. He looked at her with eyes wide with fear.
" You have not missed him by much." Came his reply shortly after.
Nessa looked past him, surprised to see that Eomer's horse was still
there.
"He gave orders that only you could approach.» She looked at him in
confusion." In case you chose to ride once again."
Nessa looked from him to the horse and back again. The choice was
hers to make…
Eowyn looked up suddenly as she saw a single rider riding off
quickly. Narrowing her eyes gave her a better view of the rider
before they vanished from her sight.. It had been Nessa.
