Chapter 4 Johnny
Orlando woke early the following morning, sunlight streamed across his hotel room from the window that he had neglected to close the blinds of the night before. Yawning, he rolled over in search of a more comfortable position, one where the light hopefully wouldn’t be shinning in his face. He was exhausted, thankfully the flight down to the Caribbean had gone smoothly with out incident, but it had been extremely long, and then he had had to take a fairy ride to the hotel, so all in all by the time the trip was over, any and all energy had been zapped out of him. Glancing at the clock he was relieved to see that he still had several hours until he was to meet, Gore, Jerry and several of the cast members for breakfast, enough time to catch a few more winks of sleep before having to get up and shower.
The unmistakable annoying sound of Orlando’s alarm sounded about an hour and a half later. Rolling over the young man grabbed the offending item and hurled it against the far wall of the hotel room, ending the shrill sound with a bang. Groaning, Orlando sat up in bed, and swung his legs over the side. Blinking his eyes several times to clear the sleep Orlando looked down at his watch, he had an hour and half until he had to head down to breakfast. Rolling his shoulders around, Orlando tried to suppress his growing nervousness, despite what he had told his sister, he was extremely nervous about working with Johnny Depp. The man was gorgeous a genius and an incredible actor, he had seen and loved all of Johnny’s movies. Finding that the nervousness didn’t leave, Orlando stood and headed towards the pile of clothing that he had dropped as he undressed the night before. Reaching into his pants pocket, he grasped the familiar tin box and pulled it out.
Opening the box, Orlando sighed in relief as his fingers grasped the familiar blade. Walking into the bathroom, Orlando started the shower and lowered his pants. Bring the blade to the inner side of his left leg near his crotch; Orlando made a quick slice to the tender flesh, followed soon after by another one. Instantly all anxiety melted, washing the fresh blood of the blade, Orlando returned it to its box and placed both on the sink counter. Stepping out of his pants, and sliding his shirt over his head, Orlando climbed into the shower. Hot water beat down on his cold body, zapping all effects of the crisp morning air. It was funny here he was in the middle of the Caribbean yet the mornings seemed to be cold.
Stepping out of the shower, Orlando quickly towel dried himself, wrapping the towel around his slim waist and headed into the main room to find something to throw on before heading downstairs for breakfast. Orlando quickly put a large bandage on his inner leg to soak up any drips that still fell from the gash in his leg followed by a large piece of athletic tape to insure that the bandage stay where he placed it. Once that was taken care of he slipped into a stone colored pair of cargo pants and a tight black t-shirt, and a pair of black flip-flops. Raising the towel to his hair he roughly towel dried it, before pulling a brush through the unruly curls that he had grown for the movie. Wishing not for the first time that he could have kept his mohawk that he had while in New Zealand, why Will Turner’s costume didn’t have a wig was beyond Orlando. Grabbing his wallet and room key Orlando stuffed both into one of the many pockets his pants had, before popping a stick of gum into his mouth to get rid of his morning breath, and headed out the door towards the elevator.
As he entered the dinning room of the hotel, he scanned the area with his eyes; he’d already met both Gore and Jerry the night before just after he arrived at the hotel. It didn’t take him long to see both of them sitting at a large table near the back by a window, with them sat two women, severtherther chairs still empty. Painting a smile on his face, Orlando headed over towards the table. As he neared it, both men stood up smiles plastered across their faces, the women looked up smiling.
“Ah good morning Orlando, I trust you slept well?” Gore asked as he reached out to shake Orlando’s hand again. Jerry also shook Orlando’s hand before motioning for the young man to take a seat in one of the many chairs left. Smiling Orlando reached out to shake the hand of the younger of the two women, “Miss?” “Keria, I’m playing Elizabeth Swann, nice to meet your Orlando, or should I say Mr. Will Turner?” “Pleasure.” Orlando answered before reaching out a hand to the other lady, “Ma’am?” “Mrs. Knightly I’m Keria’s mother.” “Nice to the meet you.” Orlando smiled back; looking around the other chairs he looked to Gore and Jerry before questioning. “Who else are we expecting? I’m starved.” Jerry laughed lightly, “We’re still waiting for Jack, and Johnny I’m not sure if Geoffrey is going to be here or not but please if you’re hungry go ahead and head to the buffet”
Jack walked in a few minuets later, after the five had already headed to the buffet. Once again, every one stood to greet the newest member of company; Orlando smiled and held out his hand. “Ah Orlando Bloom, pleasure to met you.” Jack said taking his hand. After shaking the hands of everyone else that sat around the table, Jack headed of to the buffet to grab some food. “I guess Johnny is going for fashionably late.” Gore said to the group once Jack had taken a seat.
Johnny arrived moments later, deep in disguise a large hat sat on top his head shading his face from everyone whom he walked past. He wore a stripped long sleeve shirt that looked as though he had eaten a box of crayons and had thrown up all over the garment, His pants, tattered blue jeans holes ripped in both knees, and for shoes the man was actually wearing pink bunny slippers. Orlando couldn’t believe it, even in his somewhat pathetic state of dress, he still had people turning their heads and smiling as he went by, whether or not they all thought he was crazy was beyond Orlando. As Johnny approached, Orlando noticed Keria’s breathing becoming erratic taking a chance he glanced in her direction, the young girl looked as if she were lost in dreamland. Sliding into the chair on Orlando’s right, Johnny nodded good morning to everyone at the table, stopping and staring questionably at Orlando. Gore intervened, “Johnny, I’d like you to meet, Orlando Bloom, he’s playing Will Turner.” Johnny immediately smiled. Holding up a hand to shake the older actors hand, Orlando was shocked when Johnny pushed his hand out of the way. Raising a questioning eyebrow at the older actor, he was soon even more surprised to find Johnny’s arms wrapping around his body as he was pulled into a hug.
“Nice to meet you Bloom.” Johnny whispered in his ear, causing Orlando to feel faint. Smiling at the older man as he pulled away, Orlando answered, “You too Johnny.”
The remainder of breakfast, was a discussion about business, Gore and Jerry went over everything that everyone needed to do so that production could get under way the following week. Costumes had to be fitted, sword training had to be done, and friendships had to be forged. Also each member of the cast would be moving out of the hotel into a condo somewhere on the beach, a car rented to each.
*****************
Breakfast came to an end, Orlando, yawned he was still tired, looking around the table he smiled as the other members of his crew stood and exited the dinning hall, sighing he decided to head back upstairs to his room as he was still tired from his trip and since he wasn’t expected to be anywhere for at least five hours the young brit wanted to be able to catch a little bit more sleep. Standing he nodded in Gore and Johnny’s direction before heading towards the elevators. “Hey Bloom wait up.” Johnny’s voice called out somewhere behind him. Stopping he turned, and watched as Johnny came running up to him. “Hey Orlando, Gore thinks we should spend a little time together…get to know one another…forge the bond that Jack Sparrow and Will Turner develop. So what do you say…want to go do something?”
Suppressing a growing yawn, Orlando shrugged truth be told he didn’t want to go anywhere but there was just something about Johnny that made him feel like he was unable to say no…the man was amazing, he’d only known him for a t pet period of time and already the older man seemed to have Orlando wrapped around his finger. “What did you have in mind?” he questioned…not really sure if he in fact wanted to know the answer. “I don’t know…we could go grab some beers and head to the beach…maybe do some snorkeling?” Images of release flashed in Orlando’s mind, there was no way in hell he was going any where with out a shirt, the last thing he needed was for someone to see the artwork of not yet healed cuts that he’d created on his body. “Nah, I’m not much feeling the beach right now. But beers sound good, we could start there and figure something else out later.” “Okay sounds good, but I’ve got to go change…have a feeling that fluffy and fuzzy don’t want to go outside…meet you back here in ten?” Johnny laughed before stepping into the elevator and disappearing from view as the doors shut.
It took a moment for Orlando to realize what had just happened, Johnny had stolen his elevator…and laughed at him, while he was in a stupor from something the older man had just said; fluffy and fuzzy? Did the crazy older man not only wear pink bunny slippers, but had named them as well? ‘Wonder, which is which?’ No he hadn’t just thought that. He was losing it. Sighing in defeat, Orlando turned and headed toward a nearby couch to wait for Johnny’s return.
True to his word Johnny reappeared true to his word some ten minutes later…wearing a totally different outfit minus the somewhat tattered jeans. His crayon shirt, replaced with a white tight fitting tank top that showed off several of his many tattoos. And his pink bunny slippers replaced with Black sneakers. Smiling as his eyes, found Orlando sitting in a near by couch waiting for him, Johnny practically skipped over to his new young friend. “Ahh there you are my boy…where too first? Kind of early I guess for beer, seeing as it’s 10 in the morning.” Not knowing what to say Orlando shruggeI doI don’t know I’m new in town…how many days have you been here…haven’t you found anything fun to do?” “Five and no. There’s plenty to do sure…but the company has been a bit lax so beside beer at night with the other few cast members that have been here and the few moments of dogging fans during the day…. life has been pretty boring. I took the fairy to the other islands once…but that got boring real quick, fell asleep on the ride, almost got my wallet stolen by some local urchin. Basically been working on my tan…can’t play a pirate and be pearly white now can I?”
“No I guess not…Hey are there any bridges around here?” Orlando asked a moment later. “Bridges? What the hell do you want a bridge for?” “Just like bridges, I guess…are there any around here?” “Yeah there’s one that I found the other day…pretty cool I guess…it’s over a raven…and it’s right next to a waterfall.” “Great…hey be right back.” Orlando answered before sprinting towards the elevators and jumping inside of one. “See you in five.” He called to Johnny as the doors closed. Johnny stood staring at the closed elevator door for a few minuets, contemplating what his young companion was up too and why the younger man had dashed off to his room so suddenly. Turning Johnny headed toward the couch Orlando had been sitting on only moments before and took a seat.
Orlando returned a few minuets later as promised, now wearing tennis shoes instead of his flip-flops, and carrying a black backpack. Keria walking beside him, her mother following smiling Johnny stood, and made his way over to the trio as they exited the elevator. “Hey Johnny.” Keria smiled, blushing as she looked in his direction. Rolling his eyes ever so slightly he nodded a reply, smiling at her mother. “Where are you two fine ladies off too?” He questioned with false enthusiasm. “We’re going shopping, would you and Orlando care to join us?” Keria asked, hope lightening her eyes. Reaching out a hand, Johnny grabbed, Orlando and pulled the younger man away from the women, “Nope sorry, not today…young bloom here and I have plans…maybe some other time.” Keria’s smile vanished, her lower lip rolling out into a pout. “Well we’ll look forward to then, then have a good time you two.” Mrs. Knightly answered quickly before Keria made a fool of her self…it was no secret to her how taken she was with the older actor and now with Orlando as well. Clapping his hands together, Johnny gave a slight nod and a small smile. He was relieved that they went for it, as he was in no way in the mood to go shopping with the two women. And from the look of relief on Orlando’s face neither was the younger man. “Okay so lead the way…” Orlando smiled to Johnny as they walked towards the door, leaving the women behind.
IT took the pair about twenty minuets to reach the bridge. When they finally made it Orlando was in aw. The bridge as Johnny had said was over a raven and near a waterfall but the older man had neglected to mention how beautiful the spot was. Wiping out a camera out of one of his many pockets, Orlando started snapping pictures. “Hey Johnny go stand by bri bridge…and smile.” Orlando yelled, over the sound of the waterfall beating into the river below. Johnny smiled at the boy’s youthful enthusiasm and quickly went to do as the boy asked giving the boy one of his best smiles. After the boy had snapped several pictures of him, Johnny headed for Orlando and snatched the camera from his hands, “My turn.” He said with a wicked grin. Orlando flashed him a smile and headed off to pose for the picture. Johnny however didn’t wait that long and had started snapping pictures of him as he walked away.
After a while, Orlando dug into the bag that he had brought with them, looking down over the edge of the bridge he called over his shoulder to Johnny, “Hey how high do you think the bridge is?” “I don’t know seventy or eighty feet maybe…” Johnny answered, “Hey Orlando, I’ll be right back…I’m just going to hike up the trail a little further…. I see something I want to go check out…you wanna come or are you going to stay here?” “I’ll stay here.” Nodding Johnny headed off up the trail. Once Johnny was gone, Orlando reached into his backpack and pulled out a long bungee cord, along with several clips and hinges. Attaching the cord to the side of the bridge, Orlando dropped the remainder of it off the side. The cord, ended about twenty feet above the water, smiling in satisfaction, Orlando dug into his bag for a harness before hauling the cord back up over the side. Glancing up the trail he caught a glimpse of Johnny heading back down the trail. An evil grin spread over his face…quickly putting the harness on and attaching it to the cable, Orlando climbed up onto the railing of the bridge and quickly made sure that the cord wasn’t visible, sitting down he allowed his legs to dangle off the side of the bridge.
While in New Zealand he had done the same thing…only to Viggo. He could still remember the list of bad words Viggo had shouted at him, after he had pretended to fall off the side of the bridge. He had practically given the man a heart attack. It had been worth it too, that bridge had been one of his best bridge jumps, ever. Sighing, he turned his head and watched as Johnny came into view.
Johnny stopped dead in his tracks as he came into view of the bridge; Orlando sat up on the railing with his legs dangling over the side, facing the waterfall. “Bloom what in gods name do you think you’re doing? You could fall?” He called out as he slowly crept towards the boy…as if the slightest movement could send the boy tumbling off the side of the bridge. Orlando turned slightly on his perch and smiled at the older man, “Relax I’m fine…here I’ll climb back over if it will make you feel better?” “Yes it would.” Johnny answered. Smiling Orlando turned, and started to pretend to climb over the side, but about half way over he lost his grip and plummeted down towards the raven. Shouting out in alarm, Johnny dashed to the side of the bridge, panic written across his face, as he was sure that he would look down and find the boy floating dead in the water. However, when he looked down, instead he saw, a flash followed by the image of Orlando hanging upside down bouncing up and down on a bungee cord laughing up at him camera in hand.
“WHAT THE FUCK DID YOU DO THAT FOR YOU LITTLE TWERP?!?!?”
Johnny yelled more than a little annoyed with the younger man.
“You should have seen the look on your face! Ha, Ha, Ha that was GREAT!!!!” Orlando answered, all smiles. Johnny’s reaction was a thousand times better than Viggo’s had been. “Hey could you help me get back up?” Orlando hollered up after he finally managed to get his giggles under control.
“I should just leave you down there…. it would serve you right! I can’t believe you did that to me. Practically gave me a heart attack!!!! I can’t believe you did that to me you little SHIT!” Johnny ranted and raved as he started to haul, Orlando back up. When the boy was finally back on the bridge, Johnny smacked him across the back. “Don’t you ever do something like that to me again? Savvy?” Wincing at the force of the blow, Orlando held his hands up in defeat. “Okay Okay…I’m sorry…but it was totally worth it. You want to try?” Johnny looked at him like he was crazy for a moment. Then just as Orlando started to pack the equipment away, he nodded his head. “Sure I don’t see why not…might be kind of fun.”
The pair continued to jump several more times, after Johnny found that it was indeed fun, they even jumped together once…but decided that it was too much work to get back up…so they quickly decided to forgo doing that again. After both had jumped about four times, not including the one together…it started to get kind of redundant, so they decided to pack up their gear and head back to town, find somewhere to get their pictures developed and the nearest bar to get a well deserved drink. Looking at his watch for the first time…all morning Orlando cursed, they where expected on the set in an hour for god only knew what. Suppressing a yawn that was building in his throat Orlando excused him self and headed toward the bathroom…the day had so far been fun…hell it had almost been normal…but Orlando still found the need to cut himself stirring just below the surface. Heading into the bathroom, he end ond one of the stalls. Locking the door, he sat down on the seat and opened his pants. Reaching into one of his many pockets, his hand grasped the familiar tin box. Opening it he pulled out his treasure along with several small gauze pads and a roll of tape he had thought to bring with him. Putting the blade to his inner leg, he sliced into his skin, sighing in relief. Making two more quick cuts, before dropping the bloody blade back into the box and starting to bandage up the wounds.
Exiting the roomroom moments later, Orlando felt a new sense of relaxation, Once again ready to face whatever came at him. Smiling he made his way over to Johnny, in their short time together the two had already seemed to have formed a bond…though the older man probably thought he was crazy…the morning had been fun. Sliding into his stool, he looked at his watch again…”We should probably head back to the hotel…to meet up with the rest of the crew.” Johnny nodded before gulping down what was left of his second beer Orlando, quickly swallowing his first.
Standing, Johnny swung an arm over Orlando’s shoulder and proceeded to guide the boy towards the door. “We’ll have to pick up our pictures later…since we don’t really have the time now…besides if Gore catches wind of this his liable to kill us…ahh I can see the head line now… Actors deaths before movie started filming sends director into early grave.” Laughing at Johnny’s playfulness, Orlando nodded. “So tell me the truth…did you have fun or do you think that I’m a crazy reckless kid?” “Well crazy and reckless you might be…but despite it all I had fun. And to tell you the truth…you’re a breath of fresh air…compared to some of the other people I’ve worked with. I’m looking forward to our time together…even though you are a twerp.”
“Hey who you calling twerp…grandfather?” Orlando countered back, before taking off down the street towards the hotel.
“Grandfather huh?” he heard Johnny yell after him, moments before he found himself being tackled to the ground. Johnny proceeded to ruffle his curls. “I’m no grandfather…twerp.” Yielding Orlando nodded his head. “SO I see…now let me up.”
Laughing the two resumed their walk back to the hotel, teasing as the other as they went. Friendship blossomed between them.
