Gimli sat his goblet down and went to open the door.
Lastand stood in the doorway. She was holding something wrapped in a soft green cloth.
Gimli motioned for her to come in and he offered her some wine.
"Nay. Thank you. I have come to give you a parting gift. I embroider gowns for the little ones born in Eryn Lasgalen and give each babe a pattern that is unique. I have done so since Celduil and I were betrothed. If the child is a member of the family then I ask for one of the garments back when the baby has outgrown it."
Gimli knew what was in the cloth now and felt excitement. He would get to see Legolas' gown. She had kept one!
"When Legolas was born, my skills were not as they are today. I fear that in trying to show my love for the newborn, I attempted too elaborate a design and it is not in correct proportion. Yet I thought you might cherish the having of it."
Gimli longed to hold the treasure she held out to him but he shook his head. "I could not take such a gift."
"You have given me my husband. Even had you not given me that which I value most, my heart declares that this should be yours." She placed the bundle into Gimli's arms.
Gimli replied, "I thank you, my lady. Greatly will I love this."
She leaned over and kissed him on the forehead. "And I thank you. May you be safe on the road as you are in my heart."
After she had departed, Gimli sat the package down on the table and tenderly opened the green fabric. His gasp was loud as he uncovered the little gown. Gimli wiped his eyes to prevent tears. He wanted to see this tiny garment.
The garment's top half was a dark blue, the bottom a pale rose. It looked like the sky at dawn's first approach. There was a beech with many green leaves. Gimli understood why she had said it was out of proportion. Straight across from the tree was a star. A crescent moon was between the star and tree, only slightly above them. On the bottom of the gown was Legolas' name in elven characters and his date of birth.
Gimli traced the star with his fingers and Legolas' words came as clear as if the elf was in the room stating them. "A dwarf named after a star for his elf."
With great care, Gimli wrapped the cloth back over the gown and moving it aside, put his head on the table as thoughts raced like the wind over a field on a blustery day. Legolas was the dwarf's one. Yet Legolas had spoken correctly when he said that Gimli was his one. He was the love destined for Legolas.
The star and the tree had been sewn across from each other to represent both of them, neither higher than the other. Even though Lastand had not known the future of the infant she was designing clothes for, the star of dawn was for Gimli and the beech for Legolas. The crescent moon and the night was a symbol of the ceremony that officially bonded elf and dwarf. Lastand could not have seen the future yet her hands had been guided by One who could.
Eru had given him a place! It was here on the gown embroidered with love. It had been almost a thousand years ago, yet all that time before he had even been born, Eru had known of him. Not just an acknowledgment but had created a path for him alone. Something one would do only if they cared. And if Iluvatar had cared enough to give Gimli, son of Gloin, a destiny for his life then it followed that he loved all dwarves well enough to determine their course. They were not unwanted!
Gimli was not conscious of the minutes that passed as he let this new revelation saturate his soul and heart. He did not hear his elf arrive but was aware of Legolas' hand on his shoulder.
"Are you all right, meleth nín?"
Gimli looked up at Legolas, his eyes still wet, and then gently unwrapped the gown.
Legolas' cry of joy was like sunlight filling a room when the drapes are pulled back. He reached out and tenderly traced the star. “My star.”
Gimli said, "You were right, my treasure."
Legolas' smile was bright as he answered, "And he even loved enough to give a wonderful, stubborn dwarf proof."
