Luck be a Lady

Chapter 34

*Five months Later*

I was sitting in a cozy restaurant, with live mariachi music in one corner, and a dance floor in the other. I watched as a beautiful woman entered, several men were at her side in seconds...offering her a smoke, a drink, polite inquiries about a dance. I was too busy paying attention to my date to notice that her gaze was on the man sitting across from me. I wasn't very hungry, and just pushed the food around on my plate with a fork. I'd had a few drinks yes, but I knew I wasn't drunk.

A shadow fell across our table and the movement knocked my napkin onto the floor. I bent over to pick it up, and when I sat back up he was gone. I whirled my head around to see him dancing with the woman I'd seen earlier! I sat there stunned but only for a moment. "He'd forget about me so quickly?" I thought. "Well she's messed with the wrong woman in here tonight." I marched right up to the dancing couple, ripped her out of his arms and began dancing with him. He was after all the man I was out on a date with. I felt her hands on my arms, and with out hesitation, whipped around and struck her hard.

"Maybe I am drunk..." Was my last thought before more punches were thrown, but not by the woman, a fight had broken out in the small restaurant. I was too drunk to stand any longer and collapsed into a chair. He ran over and picked me up, as a groom would carry his new wife, and we left.

"And, Cut! Excellent, great job guys!" A stout man exclaimed. "Sarah, that was wonderful."

"Thank you sir." I breathed, it was hot under the heavy lights that hung over head, and my costume was made of dark wool.

"None of that 'Sir' bullshit," he laughed, and then called over an aide to discuss some minor details. "We'll wrap for the night, see you all tomorrow."

My costar walked over to me, we were both unknowns, but eager to give this film our best. "How 'bout a drink?" He grinned.

"Thanks David, but I've got to be getting home." David Anderson was a few years older than me, but his level of maturity was still to be determined. He was perfect for the role of Sky Masterson. Tall dark and handsome, but he was extremely creepy. His eyes were always cold, even when he was supposed to be falling in love with my character. The past few weeks of shooting had been difficult, as I constantly had to avoid his advances.

He chose to grab my arm. "Look Sarah, I know you like me. I can see it in your eyes when we're together on set." His grip was firm, and it was starting to hurt. "Why is that doll?"

"It's called acting," I said through a glare. I wanted to add "dumb-shit" to the end of it, but wouldn't provoke him any more than that. "Now get the hell away from me." I pulled my arm loose and walked back towards the rest of the crew. They knew he was giving me problems, and tried to steer him away when we weren't shooting.

I entered my dressing room and found that there was a message on my mobile. I smiled as I saw the number.

"Hey there babe. I know you're going to get this when you get done shooting. I'm sorry that I can't be there when you get home, but I'm going to be home soon I promise. The boys said they were going to be in the area this weekend, so look out for house guests. Call me soon. I love you."

I grinned; house guests meant that I'd need lots of lollipops and whiskey in my apartment. I grabbed my street clothes and changed quickly before heading out into the streets of New York. I always felt eyes on me, but it was New York...there was always someone watching you it seemed.
