First star I see tonight

Chapter 32

Dinner that evening was simple, large, but simple. A ham and mashed potatoes, green beans from the cellar, apple butter from the previous fall, and fresh baked bread. Elijah and I sat at the kiddies table with my two cousins Audrey and Emma, though all four of us were hardly kids. Audrey was just now graduating from high school, and Emma was only two years behind her. We didn't talk much about anything in particular, just wandered from topic to topic. When we started to slow down our eating my Grandfather stood and raised his glass of wine.

"This weekend we start a tradition, one were we all gather and share a meal as a family." He looked at me and Elijah when he said that. "This event is for my children, my grandchildren, and who ever they bring to this family." He sipped his wine, and each of us followed suit. Nitz, Lewis, and Wood as one.

*Later that night*

After dinner I'd walked outside and laid on the hill that covered my grandparent's cellar. I heard someone walking up the side and knew who it was. "When I was a little girl I'd lay here and watch the stars. Every time I saw a shooting star I'd make the same wish, to be happy, and successful at whatever I chose to do."

"What about now?" He laid down next to me and stuck a blade of grass in his mouth, chewing on it slightly. I know he wanted to smoke, but I'd asked him to try not too, due to my mother and grandfathers poor health.

"Well...I can say that I'm happy, happier than I think I've ever been. I'm starting my acting career, and I hope to be successful at it." I smiled, and blushed. "All I need now is to get married, have kids and grow old with my husband."

"That sounds like a good wish." He said, "now all you have to do is find your star." He smiled and took my hand.

"No pun intended of course." I smiled.

"What pun?" He joked. Then looked up into the sky as it was suddenly filled with shooting stars.

I grabbed his arm, "Oh look!" It was a meteor shower, and a bright one at that.

"I think that means your wish shall come true." He whispered. He kissed my hand and pulled me up. "C'mon, Star Trek is on soon."

I laughed, "I thought you hated that show!"

"I do, but I know that you like it, so I thought you'd want to watch it."

I shook my head in amusement and followed him back inside, looking into the sky once more, and pondering Elijah's cryptic statements of the evening.
