Summary: Tarias in her own way admires Erestor. When one of her friends tells him just how much, she must decide to face him or run away. Will she stay and perhaps find the romance she has always dreamed about? Or will she decide there is no such thing?
A/N: Wow it's been two years since the last update. I am truly sorry I did not realize it had been that long. It will not happen again. This chapter is shorter than I had planned but the next few chapters will be longer ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ Tarias had been sure that attending the celebrations would be a bad idea, she had been wrong. She enjoyed herself far more than she had expected. Though she still wished to speak with Arwen and ask her what she had been thinking when she had sent Erestor to escort Tarias to the party. Seeing him at her door had almost made her change her mind about going. Erestor must have been warned for he had a list of reasons why she should go. Then again, Erestor probably did not need to be warned. She had heard him speak in a council meeting once and she was sure he could make anyone agree to anything. Now, as she sat on the edge of her bed and finished brushing her hair, she grinned to herself and thought of how charming Erestor has been the entire evening. He seemed more relaxed than usual. He glared at Glorfindel at one point for telling her a story about Erestor but even Tarias had noticed the amused look he had given his friend afterward. All in all, most of the night had gone well. Right up until Erestor had escorted her back to her room and let it slip that Lindir had spoke of Tarias' secret crush on him. She had turned her head to hide her blush and if Erestor had seen, he did not mention it. Nor, had he said anymore of what else Lindir may have told him. It was a thought that now worried her. What exactly had Lindir told him? It occurred to her, only as she prepared for bed, that she had never once been bothered by t he amount of elves around her. The entire evening Erestor seemed to keep her distracted. Either by talking about different books they had read or which ones she used to teach the elflings. Of course there had been some dancing as well but only when Tarias felt comfortable enough to. Erestor had spoken to Glorfindel about Beren and Luthien's story but the golden haired elf had wisely backed away. “I would rather face another balrog than have that discussion with the two of you.” Glorfindel had replied and Tarias barely managed to keep from laughing “You can keep that debate between the two of you.” He had added then gave Tarias a friendly wink as he had turned and headed back out on the dance floor. Sleep seemed to evade her, though she knew why. It was thoughts on how the evening with Erestor went that was keeping her awake. As enjoyable as it all had been, it still felt as if it were part of some fantasy or one of the romance books she often read. Thinking about it now, it was exactly like the romance books. The escort to the dance, the soft playing music in the background as they had danced. Then there was the kiss, something she had not expected. “Why did you have to do that, Erestor?” she asked, though he was not there to give an answer. She was not even sure she would want to hear what his reply would be. She would have been happy to have said they had enjoyed themselves as friends, however the kiss had changed that. It turned the evening into something more.. “More what?” she asked herself, sitting up and running a hand through her hair. “Romantic? It was just one kiss and other than to leave you breathless, unable to sleep and talking to yourself, what effect did it really have?” She did not even wanto to think of how things would be the next day. Would they act as if nothing had happened or if things became too awkward, should she just avoid him? It was these thoughts that continued to run through her mind as she had finally drifted off to sleep. ~ * ~ “You told him?” She almost shouted in Lindir's ear whens he found him in the library the next day “Told who?” Lindir asked, slowly looking up from his book. “Do not play stupid with me, Lindir.” She hissed, grabbing the pointed tip of his ear to make sure she had his attention. “ You know very well who I am speaking of.” “Tarias I am not..” He started to reply then yelped as Tarias had pinched his ear. “Alright.” He said finally “Yes I told him, not intentionally of course but it worked out well for you did it not?” Releasing his ear, Tarias stepped back and glared at him, her arms folded across her chest. When Lindir gave her a guilty smile then looked away, she squinted her eyes. “Lindir?” she snapped, reaching for his ear again but he was faster than her this time and moved out of her reach. “ who else have you told?” “No one.” Lindir said, reaching for his book then giving her a pleading look when she snatched it up first. “ well perhaps one other but really, it was for the best. Honestly, this whole thing could not have worked out any better.” He added, chuckling lightly “Who did you tell, Lindir?” she asked again, this time she had almost growled out the question “Arwen.” He replied, smiling now “ so when Erestor spoke with her and asked her to invite you personally to her celebration, she merely made sure he was there with you.” “Oh,” Tarias replied softly, handing him his book back. “ I see.” “Tarias?' Lindir reached out to place his hand on her arm. He arched an eyebrow slightly when she shook her head and took a step back. “I think I will go for a walk,” Tarias replied quietly. She should have known Erestor had only acted that friendly with her only because he had been asked to. “Enjoy your book.” Tarias turned and left the library, her head down as she walked through the doors and out into the hall. For a brief moment, when the doors opened again behind her she thought that Lindir had come to follow. Glancing over her shoulder, she saw him head in the opposite direction. She assumed she had managed to hide her disappointment well enough that he had not noticed. By the time she had made it outside the manor and to the small lake, she felt more foolish than she had ever been in her life. To even think she had a chance with an elf like Erestor had been idiotic. She had let herself become wrapped up by something she'd often read about, something that she was beginning to realize did not happen outside of a book. ~ * ~ * ~ Erestor looked up as Lindir rushed into his study. It was rare for the normally quiet elf to just enter without knocking and the concern in Lindir's eyes was clearly obvious. “Tarias..” Lindir began as he tried to catch his breath. “Upset.” he added “my fault.” “Lindir.” Erestor stood up and made his way over to the younger elf, “what are you trying to say?” “Why would you have a study on the top floor?' Lindir asked him “ Have you any idea what it is like to run up all those stairs?” he asked once he was finally able to breathe normally. “How exactly is it your fault that Tarias is upset?” Erestor questioned, his eyebrow raised slightly as he glared at the younger elf Lindir wondered briefly if Erestor would have his head for this. He truly had not meant to upset Tarias in anyway and he still was not even sure what he had said to upset her “Yes, about that..” Lindir replied, taking a deep breath before he explained to Erestor what had happened. “You truly do need to think before you speak.” Erestor told him and he turned quickly and started to leave his study “Luckily for you, Lindir, I have an idea where to find her.” “Erestor wait.” Lindir called out to him as he followed him out into the hall. “I still am not sure what I said that upset her.” Taking a deep breath, Erstor turned slightly so he was back over his shoulder towards Lindir. “Think about it.” Was the reply that Erestor gave him. “I am sure you will be able to figure it out.” He added before he left the younger elf standing in the hall.
