A Secret Told
Chapter three
A Secret Told
Legolas worked hard to deal with his impending blindness. His days steadily grew darker and his ability to deal with the darkness grew at the same rate. He found out everything his teacher had told him was indeed true. He was beginning to realize that being blind was not as crippling as he assumed.
He had still not informed the rest of the band about his predicament. There was too much going on to worry about one elf who was slowly getting back on his feet. He knew he would have to tell them of his blindness before they left the forest to resume their journey. It simply wouldn’t be safe to do otherwise.
It was only when his eye sight faded completely that anyone began to suspect anything. The normally graceful elf that the fellowship was used to now walked slowly and if he did rush would stumble occasionally.
He was working as hard as he could to get back to his normal standards. Nessa was a good teacher but a hard task master. If she gave him a task to complete it had better be done in the allotted time. He found that as the days went by the task grew easier for him to complete thanks to his growing confidence.
Soon he was very nearly as competent as Nessa when it came to the skills he would need to make himself useful to the group. He would be ready to leave with the rest of them when the time came. For now he just concentrated on keeping his skills up.
One evening sitting round a low table enjoying a light meal Aragorn raised a subject Legolas was hoping to put off. “We need to consider returning to our mission. We can not let the world fall thanks to the loss of one man no matter how great the man.” The ranger said gravely.
“I agree it is time we moved on.” Boromir replied.
“When shall we go?” Frodo asked his voice taking on a business like tone nobody had ever heard from a hobbit before.
“The sooner the better, I suggest we spend tomorrow regrouping then leave on daybreak on the day after.” Aragorn answered Frodo’s question.
Legolas knew his time was now up. He would have to tell the fellowship on this night. “There is something you should all know.” He started carefully.
“What is it Legolas, what ails you?” Aragorn asked with concern etched across his face.
“During the battle in Moria I was wounded. I was able to continue the fight but I felt something wrong. When we emerged from the caves my eyes did not adjust from the darkness correctly. They steadily worsened once we reached Lothlorien. Galadriel had sensed my injury and told me some shocking news. My eyes would get worse until there was no sight left in them and there was nothing they could do to stop it. I am now completely blind.” Legolas confessed as he hung his head.
He felt callused fingers lifting his chin up and could feel the person he knew as Aragorn study his deep blue eyes.
Aragorn could feel the truth in Legolas’s words. The injury that blinded him didn’t harm his actual eyes so they were the same color, it was the fact that the pupils refused to focus on the others face.
“Why did you not confide in us earlier?” Aragorn asked gently.
“I wanted to learn to overcome my blindness before anyone knew. I refuse to be pitied and now there is nothing to be pitied for. I can not see this world anymore but that doesn’t mean I can not interact with it. My other senses have grown to compensate for the loss. I am just as good a soldier that I was before I lost my sight.” Legolas replied.
“You should know you will receive no pity from us only aid. Who was your teacher in this battle?” Aragorn asked.
“One of Galadriel’s guards is blind. She taught me to live in a world of darkness. Her part in this journey is over I have nothing left to learn from her. She is better off staying here to defend this sanctuary than off on a mysterious quest that nobody knows the outcome.” He answered.
“Are you prepared to continue with us? We will not deny your company but you mustn’t rush into something. We would all prefer you here and alive over with as and dieing. Aragorn asked once more.
“I am as prepared as I could ever hope to be. If I am not ready to continue with you now then I never will be. I refuse to be a useless part of this fellowship. I am coming with you nothing could stop me.” Legolas said with a fiery zeal that partially showed off just why you didn’t piss off an elf.
The talk at the table soon turned to exactly what they had to accomplish on the morn so they could leave freely the day after. That’s not to say they all just accepted what they had just been told.
Legolas was one of his first true friends and now he was harmed in a way that was irreversible. He didn’t seem to be locked in melancholy but that didn’t mean it wouldn’t happen in the future after Legolas had time to think about it without their dangerous quest hanging over his head. Aragorn couldn’t remember a time without the fun loving elf in it since he was a child at Rivendale. He would do anything for his friend and the first task was to keep himself from feeling pity that was the last thing the elf needed.
He watched Legolas interacting with the hobbits and was struck with how well Legolas had hid this from them. You could only tell if you already knew what to look for. He had known the elf was stubborn but he hadn’t realize it ran that deep
