“Will you not answer, ‘Roh?”
Elrohir remained silent, his eyes fixed on the gentle sway of the green boughs that danced overhead. A faint rustle alerted him to his brother’s movement, and a heartbeat later he was lost in a clouded grey gaze.
“Would you have it different, were the choice yours to make?”
“’Twas the will of the Valar...”
“I care not for fate just now, tôren,” the elder twin interrupted, his eyes flashing with annoyance, and another emotion that Elrohir could not name. “If...if...your wanting could change the Song, would you be free of our bond?” A pause, and the lyrical voice was softer, uncertain. “Would you leave me?”
The elf-knight looked soberly into the face that so mirrored his own, his mind awash in the memories of a millennium, and at last put a name to the other emotion flickering in the questioning stare. Fear.
Tears welling unexpectedly in his own eyes, Elrohir reached up to tuck a wayward ebony strand behind his brother’s ear, silently cursing the loose tongues and vicious spite that lay behind the question.
The elf-knight raised his head, catching Elladan’s mouth in a tender kiss, the affection and desire of a lifetime embodied in the simple gesture, and offered the only possible reply.
Do not be an ass, ‘Dan.
