Chapter Three
Billy started to get nervous but with excitement. He would arrive in LAX in an hour. He was also tired, and he never imagined it would be this far. His father had chosen UCLA and Billy could pick up any major he liked.
The King made an arrangement for someone to pick up the Prince and show him around. When Billy left the terminal, there was a young woman standing with a sign that said his name, and so Billy went to her.
“Hello, I’m Billy Boyd,” he smiled and extended his hand.
“Pleased to meet you Mr. Boyd, my name is Carol, I’ll be driving you around until you reach UCLA,” she said as she shook Billy’s hand.
Two men helped Billy and Carol get his stuff inside her car. They drove out of the airport. Billy was in the back.
“So, if don’t mind me asking, what is a well dressed fella like you doing here?”
“Oh, I would like to experience new life outside my country, that is all.”
“What is your country?”
“Scotland.”
“Is that so? Your accent is funny.”
Is that a compliment? He thought. “Some people say it is.”
“What do you want to study?”
“I really don’t know yet, but I will find out.”
“Alright pal.”
Billy smiled in amusement, she called him “pal”, that had NEVER happen before. Their little chat ended, and he was looking outside, seeing how different Los Angeles was from Edinburgh. It’s so warm here. Everybody was wearing shorts, short sleeves, sandals, skirts, sunglasses and here Billy found himself wearing a suit.
Carol drove inside UCLA and Billy was impressed with how big it is.
“This is like a city!”
“Yup!”
“I am going to get lost in here!” he laughed.
Carol chuckled, “Oh don’t worry, you’ll find your way once you get settled.”
She drove Billy to the student apartments. The King had managed to get Billy a single room, and Carol now helped Billy up to his room. Once they were inside, they both looked impressed.
“Damn! This is fancy!” she cried.
“It is nice, Carol, thank you for driving me here. I suppose you got paid for this?”
“Yes, my boss sent me the check.”
“Good! Then it’s settled! You may go.”
“How will you get to the administrative building?”
“I’ll walk, it will do me good.”
“It’s a 10-minute drive.”
“Right. That’s fine, I’ll walk. I’ll have to change clothes because it’s warm outside.”
“Yeah, well this is it Mr. Boyd, good luck,” she extended her hand.
Billy took it, “Thank you, you too.”
She left the room. Billy found himself finally alone, without the press bothering him or his parents asking him to do this or that; he was a free man. He began to unpack, put all his clothes in order. The cell phone that his father gave him is safe and sound inside the closet and he left it charging.
After he was done, he left the building with the papers he needed for registration.
Carol got him a map of UCLA and Billy had no trouble following it. Once inside, he got registered and was sent to see what he would like to study.
Okay, Technology, Medicine, and Chemistry… these don’t get my attention. Mmm, Drama… that would be interesting, pretend to be someone that you’re not, ha, reminds me of my situation, alright, Drama it is.
Happy with his decision, he turned around to hurry out but he bumped into someone (causing papers to fly everywhere.) Billy didn’t see who he hit; instead he kneeled to the floor to help out.
“I’m sorry! I was distracted!” Billy laughed.
“No problem mate! I was also distracted!” laughed the young man.
Billy looked up and saw this interesting young man, (with gray eyes, blond hair sticking out everywhere and a smile that was contagious.) Both stopped laughing and looked into each other’s eyes for a long time. Billy realized that he was staring and broke the spell by looking away for a second.
“Pleased to meet you, I’m Billy Boyd,” he said as he extended his hand.
The young took Billy’s hand, shook it and smiled. “Nice to meet you Billy Boyd, I’m Dominic Monaghan.”
