Chapter 3
Glorfindel was in the training yard instructing the new recruits. He had been late this morning after trying to get Erestor to eat. After Erestor had gotten sick, he did feel better but seemed to not be able to eat without getting nauseous. Erestor had insisted that he was fine and if he did not feel completely better by evening time, then he would go and have Faelon examine him. Glorfindel had reluctantly agreed and only when he got Erestor to promise that he would eat a hearty lunch, which Glorfindel would bring to him himself.
It was nearly lunchtime when suddenly Glorfindel felt another wave of sadness coming from Erestor. Sheathing his sword, he called out to Daugion to take over the training as he ran from the field to the Last Homely House and to Erestor’s study.
‘Melui nín (My sweet), what is wrong?’ he demanded as he ran full force, nearly knocking down a couple of elves as he passed them by. When he arrived at Erestor’s study, he found Melpomaen outside trying to get Erestor to open the door. He was wringing his hands and had tears in his eyes. When he saw Glorfindel coming, his body visibly shook with relief.
“Glorfindel, I do not know what happened. We were going over a list of things that needed to be purchased for the Last Homely House when I asked how Lostariel and Mírion were doing. I said that I bet you and he were very proud Adas when suddenly he started to pat his chest. Then his eyes started to fill with tears and he leaped from his chair and ordered me out of the study. He actually pushed me from the chamber and slammed the door in my face and locked himself in and he will not open up for me,” Mel said, as tears started to wet his cheeks.
“Mel, it is nothing that you did. I would appreciate it if you would go and find Elrond and tell him to meet me in the Healing House. Tell him I will be there shortly, once I can get Erestor to open the door for me,” he said as he squeezed Mel’s shoulder.
Nodding quickly, Mel ran down the hallway in search of Elrond.
Taking a deep breath to settle his nerves and the riot of emotions that were running through him, he knocked on the door, “Melui nín, will you not open the door for me? Saes (Please)?”
All Glorfindel received was a sniffles and sounds of weeping. Closing his eyes he said, ‘Melui, it is I, your meleth (love). Let me in.’
Erestor was so confused. He knew that he was being irrational, but he could not control his emotions and he felt ashamed, with made him feel even worse. Hiccupping he whispered, “I forgot to wear my necklace.”
Glorfindel frowned for a moment, then he realized what Erestor was saying. There had not been one day that he did not wear the crystal necklace that Glorfindel had given to Erestor for his binding present. Even so, Glorfindel did not understand why this would make Erestor so upset and the myriad of emotions that were coming from him was almost making him nauseous, like he was adrift upon a raging sea. He tried once more to get Erestor to open the door. After ten minutes of cajoling and pleading, Glorfindel was becoming desperate until finally he shouted, “ERESTOR! You open this door right now or by Eru I will break it DOWN!”
Glorfindel was just about to bust down the door when he heard the bolt being moved and the door opened. Pushing his way into the room, he stumbled back against the wall when Erestor launched himself into his arms. Glorfindel buried his hands into Erestor’s hair and whispered, “Shh, melui nín, it is okay, I have you.”
Erestor clung to Glorfindel and when he swung him up into his arms, Erestor buried his face into Glorfindel’s neck and sobbed all the more.
Glorfindel was so upset and he sighed in relief when finally Erestor cried himself to sleep, just before they reached the Healing House. He walked in to find Faelon and Elrond waiting for them along with Lostariel and the babe.
“Elloth dithen (Little flower), is something wrong with you or Mírion?” Glorfindel asked as he walked into the healing hall.
“No, Adar (Father), we are just here for a check up. What is wrong with Ada (Daddy)?” she asked concerned.
“I am not sure, elloth.”
“Glorfindel, put Erestor on the bed and then I need you to tell me what happened,” Elrond said as he stood back so Glorfindel could put Erestor down. After Glorfindel lay him down, but stayed hovering over him, Elrond placed a comforting hand on his shoulder, “Mellon nín (My friend), saes. I need you to move so I can look him over.”
Glorfindel reluctantly moved a few feet away so Elrond and Faelon could take Erestor’s robes off and he started to explain that he was in the training yard when he felt Erestor’s distress and what Melpomaen had said when he had reached Erestor’s study. “Elrond, this is not the first time Erestor has had an episode like this.”
Elrond looked up with concern and demanded, “Why was I not told of this, Glorfindel?”
After telling him what happen a few days ago about the broken vial of bathing oil, he said, “I wanted to take him to you, then, but he insisted that he was fine. It seemed to pass rather quickly and he was fine the next day. I do not know if this means anything but he woke up this morning and got sick. He was better afterwards, though I could not get him to eat anything.”
At hearing this, Lostariel sat down on the bed next to Erestor’s and looked wide-eyed at her Ada. ‘He could not be’ she thought.
Elrond looked at Glorfindel, shocked at the thoughts that were running through his mind at that moment.
Glorfindel started to panic as he saw the looks on all three of their faces. “What, tell me Elrond, saes?” Glorfindel pleaded.
“Glorfindel, I think you should sit down,” Elrond suggested.
“No, I will not until you tell me what is wrong with hervenn nín (my husband),” Glorfindel demanded.
Elrond placed his hands upon Erestor’s abdomen and closed his eyes for a few moments, then suddenly he snapped them open and stared down at Erestor with wonder. Standing up straight, Elrond looked to Glorfindel and simply said, “Erestor is with child.”
At first, Glorfindel thought Elrond was joking but then he realized that he would not joke at a time like this. Then what he had just said sunk in and all he could do is stare at Elrond for a moment before he shouted, “He is WHAT?” It was more than Glorfindel could take and he fell unconscious.
Haldir had been standing in the corner watching and when he saw Glorfindel sway on his feet, he ran and caught him just before he hit the floor.
“Meleth, lay him on the bed next to Erestor’s,” Elrond said as he watched Erestor stirring.
At feeling Glorfindel’s distress, Erestor woke and saw that Haldir was laying Glorfindel onto the bed next to him, “What is wrong with Glorfindel?” he asked as he sat up. He frowned then when he realized that he was in the Healing House.
“Mellon nín, he is alright, he just passed out,” Elrond sat down on Erestor’s bed and took his hand and said, “There is something that I must tell you.”
Erestor saw the worry in Elrond’s eyes and said, “Just tell me, Elrond.”
Taking a deep breath, Elrond said, “Erestor, it seems that you are going to be an Adar.” When Erestor just looked at him with a frown, Elrond added, “You are with child, mellon nín.”
“WHAT?” Erestor shouted, then started to hyperventilate.
“Calm down, Erestor, all will be well,” Elrond said as he placed his hand upon Erestor’s chest to help relax his lungs.
Erestor shoved him away and glared at him, “What do you mean, all will be well, I am an ellon, for Valar’s sake! I cannot have an Elfling!” Erestor started to feel as if the room was closing in on him and suddenly he could not breath.
Glorfindel woke to find Erestor turning blue and gasping for breath. Taking him into his arms, he gently rocked him, “Melui nín, I have you.”
“Glor…I…What am I going to do?” Erestor started to weep.
As Erestor started to cry, Mírion let out a wail and no matter what Lostariel tried, she could not get him to be quiet.
Fighting back his tears, Erestor finally looked over to Lostariel, “Elloth, give me Mírion and see if his Daerada (Granddaddy/Grandpa) can get him settled down.”
Sighing, Lostariel placed her iôn (son) into her Ada’s arms and watched as Mírion quieted right down. She smiled as she watched her Edair (Fathers) get all mushy over their grandson.
“Erestor, I know you are frightened and I will be with you every step of the way. I have never birthed an Elfling from an ellon but I know that there are books in the library. I will do everything in my power to make things as comfortable as possible for you,” Elrond said, trying to sooth some of Erestor’s fears.
Just then, Haldir spoke up, “I may be able to help. Well, actually, I know of someone who can.”
Elrond walked over to Haldir and placed his arm about his waist, leaning on his strength. Erestor and Glorfindel were his closest friends and he felt for them; this was quite a shock for all of them.
Haldir felt Elrond’s worry and pulled him close to his side and gave a reassuring smile to Erestor, “There is an ellon that lives in Caras Galadhon who has had an Elfling. He came to Lothlórien some twenty-five years past when his iôn was just two. Sídhon is his name and his iôn’s name is Istuion. I am sure if we were to ask for his assistance, he would travel here to help. He has a very kind soul and I know he would come.”
Erestor smiled at Haldir, “Hannon le (Thank you), mellon nín. I would be most grateful for any help.”
“I will contact Galadriel later this afternoon and let her know what is going on. I am sure she can talk to this Sídhon and have him escorted here,” Elrond said.
Glorfindel asked, “Elrond, can I take Erestor back to our chambers?”
“Yes, I think that will be fine, but you must watch him carefully and let me know if he has anymore of these episodes. I will also make a tea for him to drink in the mornings to help settle his stomach.”
Erestor leaned closer to Glorfindel and sighed, “Am I going to be like this the whole time I am with child?”
“Ada, do you remember how emotional I became in my first period of my pregnancy? It should pass, though I became agitated and not sad. Are you going to be okay, Ada? I do not like to see you so sad,” Lostariel said as she grabbed Erestor’s hand.
Bringing her hand to his cheek, he smiled, “Yes, elloth, but I may need your help.”
Lostariel returned his smile. Leaning over, she placed a kiss upon his brow and said, “Of course, Ada, Calanon and I will be with you the whole way.”
Elrond and Haldir smiled as they watched the happy family, then Elrond saw something out of the corner of his eye. Looking at the entrance to the Healing House, he saw brunette locks peaking around the corner. Elrond looked back at Erestor and sighed, “Mellon nín, it seems you have a visitor.”
Erestor looked to the doorway and paled as he saw that Melpomaen was peaking around the corner.
Glorfindel felt how upset Erestor was and knew that he was thinking of how he treated Mel earlier. Giving a pleading look to Elrond for help, he tightened his hold onto Erestor, ‘Melui, I explained to Mel that it was not anything he did.’
‘I treated him badly, Glor.’
Taking Haldir’s hand, Elrond said, “Mellon nín, I need to go attend to some duties, I will let Mel know that he can come in.”
“Ada, I really should get Mírion home. Besides Calanon was going to come and check on us at lunchtime and you know that he will worry if we are not there,” Lostariel said as she took Mírion from Erestor.
“Come, Lostariel, Haldir and I will walk with you,” Elrond said.
Erestor watched Mel come towards them and smiled brightly, “Mel, I want to apologize for my behavior earlier, I have not been myself these last few days. Will you not sit with us? I have something important to tell you.”
Melpomaen sat down at the end of the bed, “Erestor, are you alright?” he asked worriedly.
“Actually, I am not quite sure right now. I mean I am not ill but I am…I still have a hard time saying it. Mel, I am…” Erestor could not finish.
‘It is alright, melui, I will tell him.’
“Mel, what Erestor is trying to say is that he is with child.”
“What!” Mel said shocked. He looked and saw the fear in Erestor’s eyes that he tried to hide. “Is there something I can do for you, mellon nín?”
Erestor smiled at his concern. Mel was like a little brother to him. He still remembered how Mel had followed him around when he was an Elfling, always demanding to be read to or to be helped with his scribing and reading. “Mel, you are such a dear friend. Remember how Lostariel was in the beginnings of her pregnancy?”
They both chuckled at remembering the time that Lostariel sent Mel to the Healing House. Erestor and Mel came into the library to find Lostariel on top of the stepladder and reaching for a book. At seeing her in such a precarious position, Erestor had demanded that she get down at once. All would have been fine if Erestor had not hovered over her and demanded that she sit and rest and to never do such a thing again. This made Lostariel angry, which in turn made Erestor coddle her all the more. Finally Lostariel decided she had had enough of Erestor’s attention and threw a book at him. Unfortunately, Erestor had ducked out of the way and the book hit Melpomaen square in the face, giving him a nice black eye.
“Do I need to ban you from the libraries and take all of the books out of your study?” Mel asked with a smirk.
Erestor chuckled, “Well, you cheeky little ellon! No, it would seem that my mood swings are opposite to Lostariel’s.”
“Believe me, I would rather have Erestor throwing things then crying,” Glorfindel said kissing the top of Erestor’s head.
Just then Erestor’s stomach made a growling noise and all three of them laughed. “I guess I should go back to work. You, Erestor, are to rest and do not worry. I can take care of the rest of the inventory,” Mel said as he stood.
Erestor sighed, “I suppose you are right. I will be back to work tomorrow, and hannon le, mellon nín.”
