Part 3

Greenwood the Great, 1426 T.A.

The sun graced Arda early in the morning and the first beams shone through the windows of the Greenwood palace. Birds were singing their morning greetings and the sweet melody kissed a small elflings ears awake. Legolas slowly woke up and stretched on the bed.
//...too early, don’t want to wake up!!! What a wonderful dream...//
But he wasn’t able to fall asleep again – he yawned and stretched again, when suddenly a thing came to his mind:
// My begetting-day! Today is my 100th begetting-day!//
Sleep now was not a question anymore. Legolas quickly got out of the bed, through the door, the corridors along and rushed in his parents’ bedchamber. He jumped on the mattress and in his royal fathers arms.
“Adar, adar, wake, wake up!”
Thranduil slowly opened one eye and then nudged his wife.
“Meleth – tell your child that it’s much to early in the morning for being so loud.”
“At this early hour it is YOUR child – hervenn nîn!”
“Adar, nana, saes wake up! It’s my begetting-day – my first century! Saes!”
The king was now fully awake and sat up in his bed. He burried the little one in a deep hug and spoke in soft words:
“Yes, my little Ama is now a big girl, and a beautiful one. Oh my dear, I am so proud of you.”
The child literally beamed at these words.
“What do you think, my dear wife,” Thranduil continued, “is our iell now too mature for a begetting-day gift?”
“Well hervenn nîn, I think a little gift should do no harm, what do you think Ama?” She winked at Legolas.
“Well, iell-nîn... perhaps there is a little gift for you....perhaps at the desk in my study...”
Legolas jumped from the bed and ran in the adjoined room. There on the desk was a wooden box, a red ribbon lovely tied around it. With trembling fingers Legolas opened it. His heart missed a beat and his eyes became moist. In the box was a beautiful mithril circlet, little silver leaves were woven in a lovely semicircle, some emeralds adorned the stunnig piece of art. Legolas was so overwhelmed at the sight, he didn’t hear is father approaching.
“So Ama – since you’ve now reached your first century, it’s time for you to wear your first circlet as a sign of your royal state and our family.”
“Adar, it’s so wonderful...” and Legolas flew in his fathers arms and whispered with a small voice: “Hannon le!”

***
“Good morning and happy begetting-day to you my sweet pen-neth!” The nanny entered the nursery, hiding something behind her back.
“Morning Kela... look, look what my parents gave me... my first circlet!”
“Oh, Ama... it’s beautiful, you should wear it at dinner this evening. Well, I’ve got a little gift for you too...”
“What is it?”
“Close your eyes!”
Legolas did as he was told an Kela placed her gift in the childs hands.
“Kela – a bow.... hannon le!” But the smile on Legolas faced vanished and with a sad voice he said: “But Adar said, that little girls cannot become warriors.”
“Well, he was right, little girls will not become warriors. But I don’t remember that he said, little girls are not allowed to learn how to shoot arrows, do you?”
“Do you think that Haldir is a good archer?”
“Hey, he’s one of the Galadhrim, and it’s said that they are the best archers in all arda!”
“Oh Kela – can we go outside and try it?”
“If you want to...”

They went outside to the archery practice field. Legolas tried to shoot an arrow but failed.
“Wait, Ama – let me help you!”
“You can do archery, Kela?”
“A little ... Did I ever mentioned that I grew up with three brothers? They showed me!”
Kela stepped behind her little charge, cowered his hands with hers, showed him how to properly hold the bow, how to aim at the target. Then she removed her hands and Legolas shot. The arrow sliced through the air and hit the target, almost at the bulls-eye.
“Well done, pen-neth – it seems you have a talent with the bow.”

As the evening drew near, Legolas appeared in the great hall, where dinner would be held today. He wore his most beautiful dress, made of green silk, his hair flowing openly over his shoulders and one his head the mithril circlet his parents gave him this morning. King Thranduil looked at his son from top to toe. // Such a beautiful sight and so very wrong. This should have been one of the luckiest days in my life, in HIS life... the day, he wears his first circlet and now... How proud he wears it... and yet... He should have been dressed in warriors garment today, not in a beautiful dress... this isn’t right! Valar! What have I done....//
In spite of these depressed thoughts it was a nice evening with all of Legolas favourite dishes, which actually meant a lot of sweets!!!

After dinner Thranduil gathered his wife, healer Séregon and nanny Kela in the library. The king cleared his throat and spoke with a stern voice:
“I’ve summoned you here for a reason! Today was my ions 100th begetting-day and, following the laws of every elven realm, this is the time in the life of every elfling, when his education should start. But we cannot risk to send Legolas in class with the other elflings, so it’s up to us to teach him, what he has to learn.”
“You cannot hide him forever... soon he will find out that he’s no girl!”
“Yes Kela, I know you’re right... a few more years... a few more years for me to sleep peaceful, knowing my child’s safe - grant me this, me and my wife... I will tell him the truth, but let me decide when the time is right!”
“And what happens until then... I’m sure you don’t want me to teach your son how to sew and to knit!!!”
“KELA! Mind your tongue! You’ re speaking with our king!” Séregon shouted.
“It’s allright Séregon, I know your wife means well, I know she loves my ion dearly, and I’m forever indebted to you both, for all what you did!”
“So what shall we teach him?” Kela asked.
“My wife will teach him Quenya, and I tell him something about lore and politics. You Kela, will help him with his reading and writing, and go on with your archery training – oh yes, I know about your little lesson this morning, don’t worry, I don’t mind! And perhaps you Séregon can teach him some basics of healing. I know, these are not the lessons usually required of a little prince, but that’s my decision. It’s the best we can do for now... So Kela, would you please go and fetch my ion, so I can tell him about his lessons?”

***

Late at night Legolas lay awake in his bed. In his arms he cradled his little soft toy which he called Ilala. Kela made it, when he was about 20 and although it was old and dirty, the young prince cherished it more than any other toy he ever possessed. Now this treasure was wet with tears, the young one silently cried since hours. And like many nights before, Ilala was the only one to listen to his sorrow.
“You are my only friend, Ilala... and you always will be. I really thought that Adar would send me to class with other elflings... I thought, that they could play with me, that they would become my friends... I feel so alone....”
He cried in his pillows until he fell asleep, but the last thought that came to his mind was: //Haldir! Haldir is my friend...// And a smile graced the sleepy features as he slid in the world of elvish dreams.
