Chapter 3

She paced back and forth as she heard the clashes outside but it was not long before she was almost overrun by elves and soldiers of Rohan. All the time more and more and she could barely cope. Sweat ran from her forehead as she cleaned and stitched wounds, patching men up and then sending those able down to the caves or back out to fight. And then it all seemed to go silent and Gamling appeared, ‘Take those that can walk and go to the caves,’ Maiel looked at him and nodded, she had no intention of leaving the others. She sent those able down to the caves and drew her sword, waiting.

She heard some yells and crashes from the hall and then hooves, they were riding out to meet the Uruks, her heart sang with joy. She was relaxing thinking it over when the door burst apart and an Uruk charged in, and on seeing her laughed chargat hat her. She raised her sword and swung at his legs almost severing one from its body. It collapsed to the floor and bellowed at her, still moving forward, she gave out a cry and swung once more this time removing its head from its shoulders. She sank to the floor, overcome with tiredness. She heard noise and stood ready once more to face what ever would come through the splintered remnants, she would not leave.

As she prepared to swing she heard voices, human voices, ‘King Theoden, there were injured men in there,’ Maiel lowered the sword and waited, only to see the King as he stepped inside. He saw her splattered with human, elf and Uruk blood and the Uruk on the floor. ‘And there still are,’ he said with a smile on his face. ‘My Lord,’ she said softly, ‘they will live but there must be many others for me to tend.’ She wiped her sword on her dress and placed it back inside the pack before picking it up and slinging it over her shoulders. She bowed to him and he smiled placing a hand on her arm, ‘You have done well child,’ he said with pride. She exited the room and began to pick her way outside hoping to see the Elf.

She walked around and could hear clashes continuing outside the walls of the keep, bodies lay everywhere, men, elves, horses and Uruk. She had never seen anything like it before in her life. She tended to those who needed it as she went and eventually some others came to help taking the wounded inside. She made hey upy up onto the walls and saw a sight that would remain with her to the end of her days, what seemed to be a carpet of dead Uruks. Then as she walked she saw something she had not wished to see, Haldir of Lorien lay on the wall dead. She gently ran a hand down his face and saw the leaf clasp he wore was still attached, she ran her hand over it and it seemed to come off into her hand. His bow lay nearby and she picked it up, clasping it tightly, before slinging it over her pack. She turned to make her way down the steps and there she saw Eomer, come at last.
