Chapter 3: Meetings

Thanks for all the great feedback. One of you, Eowyn to be more exact, brought up an excellent point and I have decided to go ahead and make the changes instead of waiting tell the end to go back. Mainly because I will be using it in future chapters. Thanks Eowyn for pointing out my little mistake, you have no idea how much it will help in the future lol. For those of you who are curious about this little mistake, it was when Nianna stabbed the Nazgul. As Eowyn pointed out, Nianna should have felt something when it occurred just like Eowyn (the character not the reviewer lol) and Merry did during the Return of the King. So here are the changes. Thanks again to everyone who reviewed.

Chapter 3: Meetings

Lord Elrond greeted Nianna the following morning and walked along side her to the stables.

[“I do not need to remind you of the importance of your mission. Mithrandir has informed me that the hobbits will be leaving their homes tomorrow morning, as per his instructions. As far as he can determine, the wraiths have not reached the Shire, but they are quickly riding toward that destination.”], he said. [“The hobbits are expected to meet with Mithrandir at the Prancing Pony, as you know that will not be possible. I have already sent a message to Estel to meet you there; both of you will guide and protect the ring bearer as you travel to Rivendell.]

FirGael was waiting patiently with one of the stableboys as Nianna and Lord Elrond entered the stables. She quickly gathered her possessions that were nearby, sheathed her knives and donned her quiver. Before mounting FirGael, she placed her bow across her back where it crossed her chest. She turned to Lord Elrond and bowed with respect. [“Thank you again for your hospitality, my lord. If all goes well, I will see you again in the near future.”]

She mounted FirGael and trotted toward the exit of Imladris. Nianna set out once agto fto find two small hobbits.

Dusk had fallen on her second night after leaving Imladris, and still she had no success in finding the two little creatures. Nianna hoped that she had not missed the two she was looking for. The chilly wind blew harshly against her, threatening to cast back the hood of her cloak, exposing her face to the elements. The scent on the wind signaled swift approaching rain clouds that would arrive before the night ended. As she drew the robes tighter against her body, she glanced around hoping to spot her quarry.

As her eyes attempted to penetrate the dark forest that stood silently beside her, she felt an incredibly dark presence ahead of her on the road. It was a Ring Wraith. She kicked her heals against FirGael’s sides, commanding him to a gallop. As she drew nearer to the dark presence, she could hear several voices screaming including that of a Ring Wraith. It seemed that one of the nine had found its prey. She quickly readied her bow as FirGael turned with the bend in the road.

In front, no less than 100 feet, three child-like figures were running towards the river. The Ring Wraith had trapped one of them however, and with a dark clawed hand, reached for the hobbit. Without delay, she let loose her arrow, and just as the creature was to grasp the hobbit, the arrow struck his hand.

As the Ring Wraith screamed and pulled his claw-like hand back to take the arrow out, Nianna quickly placed her bow on the saddle horn and reached for one of her long knives. The hobbit was still trapped from following his friends and was desperately trying to stay away from the flying hooves of the black horse that was blocking him.

The Wraith turned towards Nianna and drew his sword. As FirGael and the black rider’s horse crashed into one another, the clash of metal could be heard throughout the nearby woods. Nianna was trying desperately to move the horses away from the hobbit while at the same time deflect the strong blows being dealt her from the Wraith.

“Run, Frodo!” the hobbits screamed as they uncoiled the rope of the ferry and pushed it out into the river.

Nianna was finally able to move the horses just enough so that hob hobbit could escape and he took that opportunity. From the corner of her eye, she could see him running toward a large raft that had already been set adrift by his friends. She deftly avoided another blow and dealt one of her own. The Wraith screamed in pain when Nianna’s sword pierced his side. Nianna echoed the scream as a rush of burning ice shocked her into releasing her hold on the knife. Despite the freezing pain shooting up her arm, she quickly shifted her stance on FirGael. Using the same hand, Nianna reached down and punched the Ring Wraith’s horse, near its eye, temporarily blinding the stallion. While both the Wraith and his horse were reeling from pain, she turned FirGael towards the river. She had very little time before the Wraith and its steed would begin it’s pursuit on her and the hobbits.

“Jump, Frodo! Go on faster! Jump!” the hobbits continued to scream at their friend.

Nianna knew that the little creature would never make that jump without assistant. As she caught up to him, she reached down and grasped the back of his cloak and swung him over her saddle as if he were nothing more than light baggage.

“Hold tight!” she yelled. She could feel his tiny hands grasp her leg as she drew near the ramp. She could hear the dark horse and its rider gaining on them. The ferry was now more than 10 feet from the ramp. She was again faced with a dangerous decision. There was no other option…she and the hobbit had to jump the distance. As the wood of the ramp echoed under FirGael’s hooves, she leaned forward over her passenger and tightened her grasp on FirGael with her legs while her hand tightened on the reins.

The hobbits on the ferry quickly realized what was about to occur. They quickly moved to the sides of the wooden raft to prepare for the three extra passengers that were about to come aboard. They held their breaths as they watched the horse soar over the distance between the end of the ramp to the raft. They stared, open mouthed, at the horse that had landed in the middle of the raft. The horse stumbled slightly as one hoof splashed against the river water but was quickly brought up to land firmly onto the wooden raft.

Nianna looked to the three hobbits and smiled with exhilaration. She quickly turned around at the sound of the Ring Wraith’s scream of defeat and anger as he came to a halt at the very edge of the ramp. Even with the shock of icy pain that shot through her hand at the creatures shriek, she laughed as he pointed one of his clawed fingers at her and the hobbits.

As the two enemies looked at each other, Nianna yelled, [”Tell your master that he will NEVER see his ring again.”]

The Wraith screamed again, and quickly turned his horse around to travel down the road that she herself had just traveled on. He was joined by two of his fellow comrades. She laughed out loud once more as the three wraiths rode in the direction toward the nearest river crossing. As Nianna flexed her hand, trying to relieve it of its chilly numbness, she contemplated the river’s path. If her memory served her correctly, the nearest crossing was at least another 50 miles upstream.

FirGael sensed his rider’s mood of exhilaration and began to nod his head and prance in place. The raft quickly protested and creaked from the movement of such a large animal. Nianna turned around and began to calm FirGael by stroking his neck and speaking quietly in Elven tongue. Once she had calmed him and asked him to stay as still as possible while on the raft, she noticed movement that stirred against her stomach as well as the slight tugging coming from her side.

One of the little hobbits tugged at his friend’s leg in attempts to remove him from Nianna’s saddle. She gently guided the hobbit to his feet. Once both of his feet were firmly planted on the ground, the other hobbit grabbed him and pulled him away from her and FirGael. With very little room to maneuver, the hobbits tried their best to place as much distance between themselves and the stranger.

“Well, this was unexpected.” she said in common.

The hobbit that was glaring daggers at her replied, “What is?”

“I was only expecting two of you. Unless there are two other hobbits traveling towards Bree, then you must be the ones I was sent to find.”

“Who sent you?” asked her recent passenger.

“Mithrandir”

All four hobbits gave her a bewildering look until the more hostile of the hobbits began looking at her with awe.

Nianna’s puzzled expression was quickly replaced with a smile as the hobbit exclaimed, “You’re an elf!”
