Into the Woods

Chapter 30

Around eleven or so we all decided to get some sleep. I was going to take Elijah to Blackwater Falls in the morning, and the rest of the family would be arriving tomorrow afternoon. My Mom's older brother, Joey, would be staying with us as well. Jeff, the next eldest would be staying with his wife's family ten minutes away, while Jon, the youngest lived five minutes away from his parents and would not be needing lodging for this get together. I was excited to see my family again, but I was especially excited to get to see my baby cousin Garrett again. 'He's almost a year old now, and must be so big.' I thought as I looked at photos of him in my room. Elijah and I were sleeping in my mom's old bedroom, and my usual room as well when I visited. I slept in my mom's built in bed on one wall, while Elijah took the other twin bed that my sister usually claimed. Our beds were parallel to each other, and I found myself watching him as he slept. The window at our feet shone brightly into our room, casting everything in a hazy purple shadow.

I laughed softly...and didn't notice Elijah's eyes open and focus on me. I turned on my back and looked at the glow in the dark stars my sister and I had hung so many years ago, creating a star field inside. I suddenly felt arms around my waist, "Thank you for inviting me here." He whispered into my neck.

"I'm glad you came." I whispered back, I buried my face in his neck and sighed. We slept like that all night, curled in the small twin bed that could barely hold me much less him as well. Night seemed to quickly end, and I found sun in my eyes sooner than I wanted to. Another disappointment was to find Elijah already gone. I got dressed and walked downstairs to find him with my Grandmother, making breakfast.

"You're very brave, Grandma." I sat on the small wooden bench and watched Elijah stamp out biscuits with a cutter.

"Nah...he's just cutting them out...won't let him mix anything."

"Good...he puts ketchup on everything. Keep an eye on him." I smiled. Elijah walked over with flour and egg covered hands. "Don't you da--"

"G'morning sweets." He put both of his hands on my cheeks and gave me a kiss. He returned to the island with a giggle, and my grandmother tossed me a towel.

"You know...you look much smarter than you really are when you wear your glasses." I laughed and dipped my finger in dry flour, then touched the lenses of his frames. My grandmother tsked me. "Don't tell me you're encouraging him!" I gasped at her. "You're supposed to be mean and threatening to him, not plotting and evil."

"Awe...you'll live." She laughed. "How bout you start slicing the tomato’s and making the toast."

I laughed and started on my tasks. Soon my parents and grandfather were up and downstairs, all fighting for the single bathroom in the house. Breakfast was uneventful...however Elijah got a hold of the ketchup and poured it on his eggs and oven fries. My dad just laughed.

It wasn't quite half ten before Elijah and I took off for Blackwater Falls State Park. It was only about an hour’s drive, so we wanted to get there before it got really hot out. The park was nearly empty, which was strange for this time of the year, but I didn't care...I loved the feeling of walking to the falls imagining you're all alone in the world. When we reached the end of the trail, all that was in front of us was the falls. I leaned against the rail, letting the spray hit me, and felt Elijah step up behind me and put his arms on the rail around me.

"When I was little, you could walk behind the falls. There was a small trail to get there, part of the five mile hike they have here."

"Why'd the close it?"

"The official reason was flooding...but we all knew it was because of the frequent couples who ventured here late at night interested in being a little...primal." I laughed and elbowed him lightly.

"This is beautiful." He said smiling. "But I bet we could climb the rail..." He laughed and picked me up, pretending to try and carry me over the rail.

"'Lij put me down!" I shrieked. I laughed and tried to get out, but finally gave up.

"Oh well...in that case, looks like you're alright with my decision." He spun me around and set me down again. Steadying me before stepping back and holding up a camera. "I want to get you with the falls."

"No way..." I laughed, "Put that away."

"Awe...c'mon babe." He pouted and widened his eyes, looking over the tops of his frames.

"You know, one of these day's I'm going to just poke you in those beautiful eyes of yours."

He laughed and stole a quick shot. "As long as you're smiling for the picture, I'll be happy." He took my hand and we made our slow way back up to the gift shop.

"Elijah look!" I whispered suddenly. A doe and her fawn had walked into the trail and were looking at us, tails up and ears perked. Elijah slowly brought up his camera and snapped a shot before the bolted off the trail, spooked by a group of teenagers goofing off. "They were beautiful."

"And they took pictures better than you did!" He laughed.
