Chap 29
As they set off, Penda pulled the small bundle out of her pocket and began to nibble on the fruit and cheese. When she finished, she took her water skin and, tilting it up, took a drink from it. As she finished she looked over to see Elrond watching her. She offered him a drink, but he declined. Once she put it away she turned and looked at him again.
“Elrond,” she said, bringing him out of his thoughts, “may I ask you something?”
“What is it Penda?”
“What will happen to Amros?”
Elrond remained silent for a few moments. He wanted to choose his words wisely, to make her understand what would be, what had to be, done.
“There will be a council, consisting of myself, Glorfindel and two of my other advisors,” he said as he looked ahead at the back of the elf who now rode with his head down in shame. “At the council, the assault he brought on Elladan and yourself will be discussed. He be be given a chance to speak and to have family or friends speak on his behalf.”
“Will I have to tell them what he did?” she asked her voice barely audible.
“Yes, it may come to that,” he replied as he reached over and took her hand in his, giving it a light squeeze. “But do not worry; I will bere ere for you. I’ll help you get through it.”
“Thank you, Elrond,” she replied, giving him a slight smile.
“What kind of punishment will he be given?” she asked as she looked at Am bac back.
“We do not have set punishments, as this type of incident is very rare among elves. You see, Penda, elves do not believe in forcing themselves on someone who is not willing,” Elrond explained. “It is not in our nature. Between what he did to Elladan and yourself, he would be given banishment from Imladris.”
“How long would his banishment last?”
“It would be permanent.”
“ she she replied before becoming silent. A few moments later she asked “Where would he go?”
Elrond looked at her. He saw the concern in her eyes. “Wherever he wishs. There are a few small villages outside the lands of Imladris; he could settle in one of them if he so wishs. May I ask, Penda, why you are concerned with what will happen to him?”
“I don’t know, Elrond,” she replied. “Perhaps it is because I feel partly responsible for what happened.”
No, Penda,” Elrond said. “Never feel you are responsible. You are not.”
“But he said that I …”
“Penda, regardless of what he said you did, he alone is responsible for what happened. Do not let him make you believe otherwise,” he said as he gave her hand another squeeze before releasing it.
“I won’t, Elrond,” Penda replied, smiling at him.
They continued riding in silence for the next few hours. When Elrond saw Elladan and Elrohir riding back towards them, he moved up and took Glorfindel’s place beside Amros. Glorfindel and Aerandir set out. While scouting ahead they would also look for a suitable place to stop for lunch.
“Ada,” Elrohir said as they approached their father, “Elladan and I will watch him.”
“No, son,” Elrond replied, “you two ride with Penda for a while.”
The twins turned their horses and moved to ride beside Penda. The three of them talked more about some of the activities that Penda was interested in. Mainly, learning to use the long knives, and honing her skills with the bow.
“Sometimes,” Elrohir told her, “our grandparents will travel from Lothlorien to visit with us. When they do, we have competitions between the people from both lands. It’s always in good fun. Perhaps you will be able to join in.”
“I’d like that,” she replied, “but it will be a while before I am good enough to compete.”
“That is true, Penda,” Elrohir replied, “but you already have some skills with the bow. They will improve with practice.” They continued talking of other things. The twins told her of their sister, Arwen, and of their grandparents, the lord and lady of Lothlorien. Penda listened with interest. She hoped she would get to meet them one day.TheyThey had been riding for about an hour when they met up with Glorfindel and Aerandir, who led them to a place just off the road, where they could eat. Aerandir and Elrohir helped Amros dismount. After untying his hands, they led him off so that he could take care of his personal needs.
Penda watched as they left. She needed to go, too, but she would wait until they returned. Seeing that Elrond and Glorfindel were busy getting lunch together, she decided to help Elladan with the horses. Together, they began to loosen the saddles.
Suddenly, they heard Elrohir yelling. “Stay here with Penda!” Elrond shouted as he and Glorfindel grabbed their swords and ran into the woods.
“Penda,” Elladan said, “hurry, tighten the saddles in case we need to leave in a hurry.”
Penda quickly tightened the three saddles that had been loosened, then gathering their reins she stood behind Elladan.
A short time later they heard someone moving through the woods towards them, from the same direction the others had gone. “Be ready,” Elladan said to Penda as he took the reins to his horse. Together, they watched and waited to see what was moving towards them.
