Torturing Elijah
Chapter 29
Dinner was simple, spaghetti and bread. I could see everyone watching Elijah as we prepared to eat. I smiled as I watched my dad begin to cut up his spaghetti. Elijah didn't however, just picked up his fork and twirled the pasta around it before putting it in his mouth. My Grandfather seemed to relax slightly, Elijah’s passed the test.
"So how do you like acting Elijah?" My grandmother asked.
"Well it's all I've ever really done, I love it a lot."
"When did you start?"
"When I was around seven or eight, I was in a music video."
"Oh that's nice. Have you been in any movies that I'd recognize?"
"Well...probably Lord of the Rings."
"Oh yes, I thought your face was familiar. My eldest son has those on DVD."
"Oh good. I love them a lot, very proud of what we did in New Zealand."
"I've been there." My grandfather said suddenly. "When I was on tour with the Navy."
"Beautiful isn't it?"
"Very. I was there for the summer."
I watched Elijah and my grandfather discuss where in New Zealand they had been and shared stories from their time there. It was amazing to see him sitting here, at a table I've been sitting at my entire life. The feeling of fantasy was present, as if this was a crazy dream...but I pushed that quickly out of my head. I've had enough dreaming to last me a lifetime.
"Sarah?" Elijah nudged me and waved a hand in front of my face. "You okay hun?"
"Hmm? Oh, yeah...fine...just got a lot on my mind is all. Sorry guys."
"So Sarah...your mom tells me that you've gotten a movie role now." My grandmother hugged me. "We're so proud of you honey."
"Thanks." I smiled. I was worried most about their reactions. I think that they'd really wanted me to come to the college here instead of pursuing an acting career. "I start shooting in NYC in a few months."
"Just New York?"
"No, some of it will be in Havana, Cuba as well."
"What is the movie?" My grandfather asked.
"It's a remake of Guys and Dolls." I said.
"That Marlon Brando film?" Grandma asked.
"Yep."
"Who are you playing?"
"Sarah Brown." I replied smiling.
"Jean Simmon's character?"
"Yes."
"Break a leg." My dad said.
"Thanks."
Elijah squeezed my hand, "Break two." He whispered.
My grandfather stood up and walked back into the living room to watch the next Star Trek episode. I winked at Elijah and pulled him up and into the living room with me. "What are you doing?" He whispered.
I sat down on the couch and pulled him down so he was sitting in front of me, then I wrapped my arms around him so he couldn't move. "You're going to sit in here with me, my dad, and my grandfather and watch an episode of Star Trek."
"Awe...come on babe, don't do that to me." He wiggled but I'd gotten a good grip on him.
"Shh...I can't hear." I laughed softly and kissed him just under his earlobe."
