The Return of the March Warden

"For all my education, accomplishments, and so called 'wisdom' ... I can't fathom my own heart" - Michael Caine

The sound of footfalls stopping outside her door instantly roused Annowe from her thoughts. But this time, her vision was true and she realized it was not Legolas returning from his errand. She slipped into her tunic just as she heard the light scratching on the door. She was not about to be caught off guard again!

Biting back a wicked grin, she opened the door to see the March Warden leaning one arm casually against the doorframe, his muscular legs crossed easily at the knees. He was smirking and posing for her as if it had been HE and not Legolas she was dallying with in the garden. Her eyes slid impulsively over his powerful form and she had to will herself not to let her glance linger too long on his body.

“What do you want now? Haven’t you had enough?” She asked, placing one hand on her hip and keeping the door firmly in her grasp. Before opening the door, she thought she might burst into giggles at the sight of him but now that he was standing here in front of her, so close that she could feel his body heat, giggling was the last inclination she was feeling. She found that in itself quite disturbing.

Haldir tried to push open the door but she kept her foot firmly planted against it, thwarting his entry. He smiled evilly at her and acknowledged her position with a slight inclination of his flaxen head.

“That was quite a show in the garden, lovey,” he purred. “I rather enjoyed myself watching the two of you. Your young prince, however, still has much to learn.”

Annowe raised a sarcastic eyebrow. If he weren’t so vile she would have almost enjoyed this wicked game of theirs. “So you say. But he pleases me more than the likes of you ever could. And what he needs to learn I can teach him,” she raised her chin petulantly.

Haldir chuckled and his eyes glinted. “But you’ve not had me yet, my sweet. How can you compare an elfling to an elf without ever knowing the difference? And there are things I could teach you as well,” he grinned back at her.

This time she did laugh. “You are certainly full of yourself, Haldir. I will grant you that,” she shook her head at his audacity, then decided to do a bit of tormenting of her own. “But what makes you think I have anything to learn from the likes of you?”

“Why don’t you let me in and I will show you?” The March Warden answered silkily.

Annowe snorted. “No,” she answered flatly. “And why do you insist on tormenting me? I did not dally with Orophin. I told him outright of my intentions with him, saving him the heartache in the long run. I do not understand why you insist on punishing me for this perceived slight.”

Haldir tipped his head quizzically at her. “My dear, I am not trying to ‘punish’ you,” he murmured in his throaty voice. “Orophin failed to heed my advice as well. This has nothing to do with him. It is about me and you.”

Now it was Annowe’s turn to be puzzled. She had assumed that Haldir was trying to revenge himself upon her for his brother or because of some shared history between Legolas and himself. What other reason could there be? What had she ever done to him?

“I don’t understand,” she blinked, trying desperately to remember any slight she possibly could have visited upon him. “What have I ever done to you?”

The March Warden sighed with mock despair. “Come now, Annowe. I know you are not that innocent,” he smiled devilishly and slowly adjusted him self, letting his hand linger there to draw her gaze. “It’s more what you have not done to me.”

Suddenly she understood and her eyes opened wide in surprise. Dumbfounded, she opened her mouth but no words came out and her mind went completely blank while his piercing eyes bored into hers. She snapped her mouth shut.

“Yes, you understand, I see,” Haldir purred softly to her. “Now let me in little one and I will teach you things you never dreamed possible.”

She didn’t answer, her mind was still numb from his revelation. Her body, however, was well aware of the implications and her heart pounded in her chest as her knees shook. She could feel his desire caress her like a physical touch and she placed a protective hand over her chest to calm her thumping heart.

“No,” she managed to breathe out. “No.” It was the only word she could manage to say with any certainty.

Haldir raised a questioning eyebrow. “You don’t sound too sure of that,” he murmured. “But as you wish.” He slowly began to draw himself up to leave. “Just remember my bed is always open for you, Annowe. And you may find the nights grow long and cold when your prince has abandoned you for a fool’s errand.”

“What is that supposed to mean?” She asked, trying not to sound as frightened as she felt. How did he know? How could he know of Legolas’ fate?

The March Warden did not answer but smugly withdrew from her doorway. Annowe watched him go, wondering how he could know of such things and worse – was he right? Quietly she shut the door to gather her wayward thoughts.
