Valawen wasn't sure what she was doing. She knew Faramir would be distracted with city business, though, so part of her thought he would never find out what she was doing. It scared her, though. He scared her. If he knew where she was headed, her life would certainly be forfeit.

So why was she here?

The guards had questioned her, but allowed her access. There was no reason not to. She walked slowly down the hall towards the cell that housed the only other elf in Minas Tirith. After all that had happened, he was still her kind and therefore the only one she felt any sort of connection with.

He looked up at her when she stopped in front of the bars. His eyes were dark, sorrowed and concerned. He knit his brow at her presence. "Valawen."

"I must speak with you," she said, biting her lip.

Surprisingly, Legolas looked away. "You should not be here. I imagine Faramir would not approve of it."

"What if...what if I have come to help you escape?" she asked, unprepared for his dismissal of her.

"Have you?" he asked, raising an eyebrow.

She averted her eyes, breathing, "No."

He wasn't surprised. "Do you want to die, Valawen?" he asked, his watchful gaze calm.

She didn't know why he asked her such a thing. "No."

"Then you should go. Live amongst the men of Gondor and accept your fate as nothing more than a pawn in their games. At least you will have life."

Her skin flushed. "Do you know your own fate?"

"I expect nothing other than death at the hands of Men. I know why you are here. You wonder if I recognize what has happened here." He leaned forward and narrowed his eyes. "Faramir is blinded by what he believes is best for Arda. This is no different than Sauron and the Ring of Power. Evil has a firm grip on the Captain of Gondor, and I imagine others as well. I know Aragorn was not immune. Are you?"

Her voice was breathless. "No. I have fallen to the darkness that inhabits this land. But I am not blind. I see. I see what takes us." She swallowed heavily and added, "There is no ring."

"There is no Sauron, either," he replied, "But there is always evil to contend with. How did it take ahold of Aragorn and Faramir?"

"A palantir." She wasn't sure why she told him. She wasn't even sure why she remained. Her feet, though, were rooted to the spot.

His eyes turned sad. "Do you know who controls it?"

She shook her head, "No."

"Whoever they are, they have successfully eradicated all who would have stood in their way. Arwen, Elrond, myself. I know not of why Faramir killed Aragorn."

"He said Aragorn was not following the true path. He said...he said those who speak through the palantir ordered him to be rid of Aragorn." Her eyes watered as she looked at her tightly clasped hands. "I hate this."

He regarded her sadly. "Is there no one who can help? What of Eowyn?"

"Eowyn," she said, looking up, "Is ill. Faramir made sure of that."

He was silent a moment before saying, "Tell me, do you have the will to do right?"

"What do you mean?" she asked.

"You can leave. You can inform Imladris of what has occured here. They may be able to do something." He looked hopeful, but not entirely convinced she would agree.

"I can't." When he nodded as if he knew she would answer in the negative, she felt as though she had betrayed all her kind. "I have done things that can never be forgiven, Legolas. I am tied to this, and there is no escape." Her voice shook with fear. "There is no escape."

Legolas stood and walked to the bars of the cell. "Listen to me. You have been forced into this. It is not your fault. If you can do anything to save this world, you must try. It is too late for me, but it is not too late for you."

Tears streamed from her eyes as she shook her head, unable to fathom leaving the city. "I am too weak."

"Then all will fall to darkness," he whispered, "And everything good in this world will cease to exist."

Valawen lowered her head and cried, wiping at the falling tears. It was hopeless. "I should not have come," she sobbed, glancing up at him, "I'm sorry."

He didn't reply as she turned and hurried out of the dungeons.
