Note: Alright, back-story time. Most of this is Orlando thinking, remembering, so... hope it doesn't confuse you with some of the 'present time' stuff... Btw, I don't know when some of these events occured, the ones that are real, so don't hurt me... I'm just placing them where I like. ^_^;;;

Part 2: Fall For You
"You light me up and then I fall for you." - Vanessa Carlton

Orlando stared in the mirror at himself.

Viggo had been there for two weeks. Two weeks, and Orlando had only seen him a total of maybe five times. Five times, five smiles, for Viggo always had a smile for Orli. And Orlando could feel himself falling. He could feel his heart quicken pace at a glimpse of this man. And as trite as it sounds, he felt that, when Viggo smiled at him, for him, nothing else mattered and he could truly carefree; that love was real and not something jokingly said to see just how much one can tear another apart.

And then reality would catch up to him, snap him out of that euphoric daze where the world was OK and nothing could hurt him. Back to the reality that, even if there was more hidden behind that saved smile, it wouldn't last and would only end up hurting him more.

The face staring back at him in the mirror was his face. The face that attracted people. The face that caused him pain and strife. The face that hid the pain, left it in the past. He stared at himself, not moving; just standing there seemed to take all the energy he could muster. But he had to get on with the day.

He forced himself to move; and slowly, hands shaking -- why wouldn't the shaking stop? -- reached for the cabinet and the row of medicine. Slowly, he counted out his doses. The fluoxetine, the lithium, the desipramine, the inderal to counteract the shaking; and one by one, he took them. And then with a sigh he turned and readied himself for the day.

---

It was a hot December day, and the hobbits had insisted on catching some waves and grilling out on the beach. It was a wonderful idea. A Get-To-Know-You since the entire Fellowship had not been together as a group yet and would soon be spending much time in one another's presence.

Surfing, food, beer, hobbits on a rampage. What more could one ask for?

"Food's up!" Viggo called setting plates around as Elijah dished out the patties and dogs.

"Ew! Lij, you know I don't eat that shit," Orli cried, watching the younger man try and force a burger onto his plate, despite his obvious protest.

Lijah blinked. "It's just a burger..."

"Do you have selective hearing or something, Lij?" Dom asked, snagging the burger and nodding to Orlando as he took a large bite. "Orli's a vegetarian... or a vegan... or something like that. He told us when we met him. He don't eat meat, Lij."

Elijah blinked again. "Oh, oops, I forgot," he said, smiling abashedly.

"S'alright, Lij. You're forgiven."

---

By the end of the day, Orlando knew more about the little hobbits than he cared to know, he discovered Beanie was more interesting than he had first seemed, and had watched Viggo get cracked upside the head with a surfboard.

The actor/artist/poet had dragged himself ashore vehemently swearing off surfing, raising a laugh from those still present.

Orlando had shaken his head and went to his jeep to retrieve the small first aid kit he kept there, since no one else seemed inclined to do so.

"You should be more careful," he said as he cleaned the cut and applied antiseptic.

"You're one to talk," Viggo said, a smirk on his lips. Just out of the smile range. Orli was both disappointed and relieved.

"Yeah well," Orlando shrugged, stretching the little sterile strip across to hold the cut closed. "I'm careful when it counts." The young Brit could tell that Viggo wanted to say something more, but he wasn't going to give the man the opportunity. He had ady ady fallen once and had ended up with heartbreak. He would not let himself fall again. "Whelp, there you go! All fixed up!"

Viggo looked at him, that deep searching look like he was looking through him, reading his very soul. And then it was gone, and Viggo was smiling at him and the world fell away for a moment. "Thank you, Orlando."

Orli blinked. "Uh, yeah. No problem, man."

---

It's not hard to fall, but it is hard to keep falling and not hit the ground.

---

Dusk settled, reaching her velvety blanket across the sky to tuck the sun into bed. Caressing the heated land with a pleasant cooling wind.

Orlando sat on his deck, mug of tea warming his long fingers, thick blanket warding off the coming cold. But neither the warm blanket nor the sweet smelling tea could warm the cold in his heart.

The crash of the sea and the twinkle of the stars, they seemed to beckon memories from the depths of his mind. Things he'd rather leave forgotten.

Memories of love. Memories of innocence. Memories of pain.

---

"Have you ever been with another man before?"

"No."

"Are you scared?"

"Yes."

"Don't be. I won't hurt you. I promise."

Words he would never forget. Words he would learn to hate.

"I promise."

"I promise."

"I promise..."

Broken promises. Lies. Words of love spoke without so much as a care behind them. False. All of it.

Orlando turned over, the bed sheets tangling about his naked, sweaty body. "Where are you going?"

The blond man smiled, pulling on his sneakers. "Just out for a walk, luv," he said, kissing Orlando on the lips. "Back in a while."

That had been the beginning of the end, Orli mused.

"Hurry! We're going to be late for James' party!" Orlando called, hopping up and down as he tried to get his sock on. "'ey! Kyle! Hurry up in there! We're late already!"

---

"Orlando so good to see you!" James cried, throwing his arms around the brown eyed boy. "Glad you could make it. Kyle," a nod, the barest amount of courtesy. But Orlando never noticed it.

"Evenin' mate," Kyle replied. "I'm gonna got fetch me a drink, 'ey, luv?" Kyle said, pecking the brunette on the cheek.

---

Orli's eyes were wide as he stared at Kyle. He couldn't believe what the man had just said. It wasn't true. It couldn't be true. He backed away, shaking his head in denial, as Kyle's friends laughed at him, the poor fool.

And the next thing he knew he was falling.

TBC

Oh god I hope that didn't suck as bad as I think it did. I'm trying to set up some back-story without having told it all yet, because I want Orli to tell it to Viggo and that's when the readers are supposed to know the whole story too.

All the references to falling... I'm sorry. I didn't mean to make bad puns all the way through. Most of the time he's talking about falling in love. Alright?

Kyle was named by Jen Lynn and Ophy-chan.

Love lots, Eärendil
