Chapter 1.

Erestor had not found as much time to read as he would have liked. Elrond had a list of things that needed to be done and as usual, Erestor had stepped in to help. This of course had kept him away from the Library as well. The times he had been in there he had not seen Tarias, not that he had been looking for her, of course. At least that was what he kept telling himself.

“What do you know of an elleth named Tarias?” He finally decided to ask Elrond as they were looking over some newly arrived messages.

“ You mean the young elleth who has peaked your interest?” Elrond replied, grinning at the look Erestor was now giving him.

“ Come now, Erestor. Do you honestly believe you are the only one who knows everything that goes on in this realm?” He chuckled

“ Who is she?” Erestor asked again.

“ She came to us from Mirkwood at a young age. She had no parents. That we know of when she had arrived as part of Thranduil’s escort.” Elrond told him

“ She did not return with them, why?” Erestor questioned, finally looking over at his long time friend

“ She seemed to fit in here more than she had in Mirkwood.” Elrond mentioned. “ One of Thranduil’s advisors had asked if she could remain here and it was granted.”

Erestor merely nodded as he glanced towards the book he’d taken from the library, the very same book she had challenged him with

“ She has some strange notions of romance.” He said.

Elrond laughed at this as he got up from his chair and walked over to Erestor’s desk

“ Name me one elleth who does not dream of romance.’ He challenged. “ She just seems more willing to let other know of her idea of what romance is.”

Erestor agreed with him and had told him of the way she challenged him in the library when they had first officially met.

“ I am glad you find this amusing.” Erestor said, rolling his eyes and Elrond continued to laugh.

“ Tarias is usually a shy, quiet elleth who barely says more than a few words unless speaking to her students. If she did indeed challenge you then it took a great deal of nerve on her part to even approach you.”

Erestor’s eyebrow rose just slightly and it took a few brief seconds before he realized what else Elrond had said.

“Her students?” He questioned

“ Yes, her students’ Elrond nodded “ She teaches the younger elflings to read.”

“ And probably fills their heads with stories of romance.” Erestor replied quietly but Elrond had heard him and could not keep from laughing again.

It was only a few days after his talk with Elrond when he finally found Tarias, though he convinced himself that had had ‘not’ been looking for her.

“There is something you overlooked.” He said, placing the book down in front of her. “ Perhaps you, yourself should read the tale again.” He told her

“ I have read it many times.” She said, looking up at him from where she sat. “ The story is the same, Beren did everything he did out of love for Luthien”

“On that I do agree” Erestor said, pulling back a chair and sitting across from her. “ Only you seem to forget the most important part of the story.” He added

“ And what exactly would that be?” She asked

Erestor saw that he was the one that had her full attention this time and he could not help but grin at her.

“ He already had Luthien’s heart.” He pointed out. “ There was nothing he had to prove to anyone that she did not already see in him.” He said

“ That does not change anything.” She started to say

“ It in fact changes everything” He said “ Luthien already loved him and had already married him, therefore he did not need to accept the quest. It was merely his own pride that made him.” He leaned back in his chair as he continued. “ There is nothing romantic about that.”

Tarias narrowed her eyes at him. She hated to admit that he could be right and refused to see anything but the romance behind it all. She knew there was no point telling him that since he world merely find another reason that it was not about romance.

“ Is that all the only reason you had been looking for me?” she questioned and almost laughed at the way he had arched his eyebrow.

“ I was not looking for you.” He replied, a little too quickly for his own liking.

Tarias merely smiled at him as she gathered the two books she had with her. She stood up slowly and shrugged, trying to act as if she cared not if he was or not.

“ If you will excuse me, master Erestor” she said, offering a friendly smile.” I do have my own duties to attend to” She added “ I do bid you a good day”

Erestor watched over his shoulder as she had left the library. Once she was out of sight he leaned back in his seat and ran a hand through his hair slowly

“ That went well” He sighed quietly. He shook his head as he got up to return to his own duties, briefly wondering why he cared anyway.

Tarias was back in her own rooms after her classes were over. She had stopped by the kitchens on her way and ordered her usual meal with plans to sit on her balcony and start reading the new book she had borrowed from the library.

Her meal sat untouched and she found herself reading the same sentences over and over. Her mind always seemed to wander towards Erestor, no matter how much she tried to stop it.

She could not seem to figure out why he seemed so easy to talk to, even if all they did was openly challenge each other. She could admit to finding him fair, just as she did the twins or Glorfindel but she could barely say more than a few words to them, barely could even look at them without feeling shy and inadequate.

The more she thought about it the more of a mystery it became. Erestor was well known for his ability to debate any subject with anyone, from elven lords to kings. He was Elrond’s most trusted friend and councilor. It was no secret he had many friends in high places and positions. He was head of the library and all other pages and councilor’s reported to him.

Normally she would have avoided him, admired him yes, but still avoided him. What was so different now that she could sit easily and talk with him? Why would he even wish to speak with her, she had no family and very few friends. She was well below his league and she decided she would have to stop dreaming otherwise.

“Have you no classes today?” Erestor’s voice had broken into her thoughts.

It had been a few weeks since she had last spoke to him and had come to the conclusion that he had better things to do then speak with her, and she agreed.

“No” She whispered softly without looking up. She took a deep breath then finally looked at him “ no, classes have been cancelled until after the celebration of Arwen’s begetting day.”

Erestor had of course known this but had decided it was a good way to start the conversation.

“ There is a lot of planning still involved” he replied, once again sitting across from her. “ Some of the young elflings have been recruited to help out.”

Tarias closed the book she had been trying to read and set it aside.

“ Some of my students were telling me this yesterday’ she said “ they were all excited at the chance to help”

“Well if that leaves you with extra free time, perhaps would like to help as well.” Erestor commented

“ If my help is needed then I would gladly step in” Tarias replied, giving him a smile.

She wondered if that meant she would be working with Erestor then silently reminded herself to stop having such hopes. She was no one important, did not even have her own family anymore. Erestor would never be interested.

“ Extra help is always needed when such detail is wished for” he pointed out “ then when everyone is enjoying how it was all set up you could tell him you helped.”

“ Oh” Tarias looked up at him suddenly ‘ I will not be attending the celebrations”
Erestor tilted his head, trying to figure her out. One minute she’s challenging him of notions of romance and now it seems she can barely look at him and when she does, she’s more shy then she had been when they first talked

“ Why not?” He asked her. “ Everyone is invited.”

“ I know” she replied softly, turning her head away. “ I would not feel comfortable being there.” She took a deep breath “ I do not know Lord Elrond and his family very well.” She admitted

“ Would this not be a good way to chance that?” Erestor asked. “It is not only for family, Arwen has insisted that many of her friends attend as well.”

“ I am not exactly counted as one of Arwen’s closest friends” she shrugged “ no it is best that I do not go.”

Erestor watched her silently for a short while then leaned his arms on the table as he leaned forward

“ I am sure your students would be happy to see you there.” He said

Tarias merely shook her head. She wished he would just let this be but he seemed determined to continue

“ They will not notice if I am there or not” she pointed out. ‘ I..” she hesitated slightly “ I do not do well in large crowds” she finally admitted. “ I tend to panic.”

As Tarias stood up to leave, Erestor stopped her, placing his hand gently on her arm

“ At least think about it. There are some of us who would be glad to see you there.” He told her.

“ I do not think so” she replied, giving him a small smile before she walked away.

‘You are indeed an interesting one, Tarias” he said to himself once she had gone.

“ You have no idea” Lindir said as he had joined Erestor “ and the fact that she even talks to you is even more interesting.”

‘How so?” Erestor arched an eyebrow.

“ She had long admired you in secret.” Lindir said. “ I would even dare to say she had a crush on you.”

Erestor’s eyebrow rose even further at this and he glanced briefly towards the door that Tarias had only moments before walk out of.
“ How exactly do you know her?” He questioned the younger elf.

“ Elrond had asked me to befriend her. “ Lindir said “ he saw that she can be as quiet as I sometimes, Elrond thought she could perhaps feel comfortable around me. We became somewhat friends”

Erestor nodded and offered Lindir a seat across from him. He waited until the elf was seated before he began.

“ Then perhaps you can explain to me how she can be challenging one minute they amusingly shy the next.” Erestor said

“ Amusingly?” Lindir grinned “ she doesn’t talk much to anyone unless you happen to find her favorite topic, then she can talk your ear off.”

“ Romance” Erestor said and Lindir chuckled as he nodded his head.

“You know she does not plan to attend the celebrations?” Erestor questioned

“ Yes, I have asked her many times to change her mind but she refused each time.” Lindir told him.

Erestor grinned as an idea had suddenly come to mind and this time it was Lindir who raised an eyebrow.

“ I know that look” he said, making Erestor’s grin widen even more “ what are you planning.”

“ Perhaps she can refuse us asking her but there is someone who she would not say no to.” Erestor said as he stood up. ‘And it so happens that this someone owes me quite a few favors.”

“Erestor?” Lindir called after him and waited as Erestor had turned back to face him “ why do you care anyway?” he could not help asking

“ I am not entirely sure” Erestor replied before he turned and left.

Tarias had not been expecting company and was surprised when someone had knocked at her door.

“Lady Arwen?” she gasped as she opened the door slowly and saw Arwen there.

“ Please, just Arwen” she smiled at the younger elleth “ We have never been one t use such formalities here.” She said
“ Is there something you need?” Tarias asked shyly.

“ I am told you do not plan to attend my begetting day celebrations’ Arwen began. “ And I came to invite you personally”

Tarias almost whimpered in reply. She really did not wish to go but there was no way she could refuse a direct request from the Lady Arwen herself.

“ I will not accept no for an answer” Arwen smiled, knowing the elleth would not refuse her. She had hated when Erestor had called in a favor at first but when he had explained why she had agreed to it. “ I will send someone that day of to escort you.”

“ Please” Tarias shook her head “ I will attend but there is no need to bother yourself with..’

“Nonsense, “ Arwen interrupted her. “ it is no bother.” She smiled “ expect him the day of the celebrations.”

“ Him?” Tarias said but Arwen was already gone. She bit her lower lip in effort to keep from flying into full panic mode.

“She will attend” Arwen told Erestor once she found him. He was in her father’s office with Glorfindel and her father.

“ You have my thanks” Erestor said

“I did however change just a minor detail’ Arwen told him “ I told her to expect an escort.”

All three ellon in the office looked over at her and she had given her best, most well practiced innocent smile.

“ Why?” Erestor was the one who questioned “ and who exactly did you say would escort her?”

“ I did not say’ she shrugged, waving at them as she turned to leave

“ And who did you have in mind?” Erestor called out before she left the room

‘ why, you of course” was her reply as she left, closing the door behind her

Erestor merely stared at the door. He did not wish to turn to see the grins that he knew for sure, Elrond and Glorfindel would now give him.
