Chapter 2: TA 155

Heaven Knows
Chapter 2: TA 155

Erestor busied himself around his office, preparing for the day’s lessons. When Elrond had appointed him to the position of tutor, the advisor was flattered. The twins were a bright pair, eager to learn and open to new ideas. Well, at least Elrohir was. Elladan spent much of his lesson staring out the window, towards the training fields. Moreover, while the older twin always turned in exemplary work, Erestor knew that deep down the boy truly loved the more physical subjects, especially those involving the out-of-doors. When the raven-haired counselor announced class finished, Elladan bid him a hasty ‘good day’ and all but ran from the room. Oh well, he could not fault the elfling; he too once looked forward to weapons training.

Today the twins would begin their astronomy studies. While they grew up listening to story about Ithil and their grandsire, they were now old enough to cover things in detail. Erestor loved the heavens and was often credited with knowing more about them than anyone. He hoped to bring the stories and the facts together in a way that would leave the twins in awe of the marvels that governed the night. He also hoped that Elladan would find the lessons more enjoyable than ‘Treaties with the Adan’ or the ‘Governing systems of the Eldar’. Erestor felt that the best way to study anything was through hands on experience; therefore, after this week's lessons on Anor and other celestial objects common to the day sky, they would spend the subsequent weeks studying the night sky…at night.

“Mae govannin, hîr nin,” the twins greeted as they entered the study.

“Mae govannin pennith.” Erestor replied.

The young peredhel took their seats and as usual, Elladan’s gaze drifted out the window. Erestor cleared his throat. Reluctantly, the older twin faced his teacher. “Today we start a new subject, Astronomy. We will begin by looking at the creation of the heavens and the objects they hold. We will cover the daytime sky first. When you have mastered that, we will move on to the night sky. Now, that means we will have to change the time of our meetings to after sunset.”

The twins’ faces beamed with excitement. “Perhaps this subject will not be so dull after all,” Elladan thought to himself.

“Now if you will come with me,” Erestor instructed, “We will move to a more comfortable setting.” He led them from the council table to a corner of his office that housed a fireplace and comfortable chairs. Pillows were strewn before one of the chairs. Settling down in the wingback chair, Erestor beckoned the boys to sit on the floor. Although a bit confused by this, the twins did as instructed and made themselves comfortable. “Now, when first Arda was sung into creation there was no heavenly light, all was covered in darkness. It mattered not to the Valar or their attendants for they can see no matter what. However, as the time drew near for the first born to immerge, Varda began to think…”

The twins sat in entranced silence as Erestor weaved his tales. It seemed more like an evening in the Hall of Fire than lessons. The counselor’s voice was melodic and his expression lively as he retold the ancient histories. Elladan had never heard Erestor speak thusly and it drew him in, created vivid images in his minds eyes, and entranced him. The older twin was so wrapped up in his tutor’s voice that he lost all track of time. It was not until Elrohir nudged him that he became aware Erestor’s stopped speaking.

“Let’s go daydreamer!” His twin prodded. “Glorfindel will be waiting and you know how he gets if we dawdle.” The younger twin was already gathering his things from the table as Elladan slowly rose to his feet. He stretched and smiled sheepishly at his teacher.

“You seem to enjoy this subject.” Erestor said with a genuine smile.

Elladan blushed, “Yes, hîr nin. At least, the way you teach it.” With that, he hurried from the room leaving a pleased elf in his wake. Heaven knows why it mattered so much that Elladan enjoy Erestor’s lessons and the time spent with the elder elf, but it did; a warm feeling crept into the elder elf’s heart.
