Note: This is a challenge to myself. I wished to write a series of fiction in which the chapters never exceeded 1,000 words, yet were no less than 300 words. The first story in this series, 'Control', is based off of a 1992 chess game between Stephen Boyd and Torbjorn Glimbrant. Each chapter is a move and a countermove. Thranduil represents white, Erestor black. I hope everyone enjoys it.

King's Knight to King's Bishop 3 - Queen's Knight to Queen's Bishop 3

Legolas smiled brightly when he opened his chamber door. "Ada," he greeted and stepped back, allowing his father entrance into his rooms.

Thranduil entered, closing the door quietly behind him. "You have spent a lot of time in Imladris," he said, sitting in one the chairs near the hearth. He nodded to the other chair, indicating he wished Legolas to sit with him. "What do you know of Lord Erestor?"

"Lord Erestor?" Legolas sat, perched on the edge of the chair, a frown on his fine features. "Ada, Lord Erestor is a cunning, intelligent negotiator. He speaks little, yet hears everything spoken, and his eyes miss nothing."

"Then Elrond chose his lead councillor well," Thranduil mused. "Does he have a lover?"

A light flush crept over Legolas' face. "No. Lord Erestor is quite... unattainable. He is distant, disinterested in the flesh, and I do not believe he has a heart to give to any." Not that his father was interested in Erestor's heart, Legolas thought.

Thranduil smiled slowly. "No one is unattainable, Greenleaf. Everyone has their price."

***

Erestor's slate eyes observed Thranduil surreptitiously. The king's gaze had been on him almost since the moment he'd entered the practice ring. The Sinda was determined, Erestor concluded, but what Thranduil did not realise was just how indifferent he was to that determination. He'd been pursued by many Elves, some more renowned and beautiful than the wild, golden-haired Elvenking.

Though he would be hard-pressed to name more than one or two, for Thranduil *was* beautiful, and he was famed for his swordplay as well as his bedplay. However, Erestor was not interested in such games.

Games played at court were tedious and transparent, and he'd long lost his taste for such things. Almost three millennia in Gil-galad's court could do that to even the most devout sycophant.

He could see the gears turning in Thranduil's head, and Erestor knew he had very little time to decide on a sparring partner. Without thought, he reached out and snagged a maroon and gold tunic, yanking the Elf close to him.

"Spar with me," Erestor demanded quietly.

"Master Erestor," Elladan said warily, "I was preparing to leave the ring..."

Erestor's eyes narrowed. "Elladan, if you know what is good for you, you will return to the ring and spar with me."

Elladan sighed, and then nodded. "All right."

A burning sapphire gaze followed him as he took his position with Elladan, but Thranduil did not approach. Erestor focused intently on the match with Elladan, trying to ignore that heavy gaze. Whether or not he wanted to play, Thranduil had begun the game.

As he swung his practice blade around, scoring a hit on Elladan, Erestor only had one thought burning in his mind.

He was too old for this shite.
