The reason for the Gap.
Chapter 2:
For months the fellowship had been wandering the land of middle earth to find the best route to destroy the ring of power. Now there was only three left. Legolas, Aragorn and Gimli were the only ones out of the original Fellowship, now on their way to save the hobbits. The road has been filled with companionship between the trio, but both Aragorn and Gimli were confused.
It was well known around middle earth that both Legolas and Aragorn were deeply in love. But the elf did not act like that was the case at all. Aragorn found his lover to be cold towards him, rejecting any attempts to reach out to him. Gimli may only have been in their aquitance for a few short months, but he saw the deep sadness within the soul of the elf and the despair of his lover that was confused as to the reason for his lovers distance. It broke Gimli’s heart. So he hatched a plan. When they came to a little town on the boarders of Rohan Gimli decided that he wanted to rest on a warm bed for a day before he continued on the long journey.
Aragorn allowed Gimli to move from their table to go and order two rooms, for the simple reason that he relished the time the he got to spend with the lovely elf, even if said elf tries to avoid conversation. “Legolas...” He started but was cut off when Gimli returned to the table throwing a key to them.
“Here lads, there was only two rooms left, ‘n as I was the one to go to the bar to get ‘em, I claim me own room.” With this Gimli quickly finished his ale and grabbed his gear heading for his room. Leaving behind an uncomfortable elf and an ecstatic human that was thankful for the opportunity to talk to the elf properly.
Aragorn stood abruptly and held out his hand towards the elf. “Come let us retire.” He said. Legolas observed him for a moment and then hesitantly took the hand, abruptly letting it go once he was standing so as to not let his feelings get the better of him. Aragorn was elated that Legolas allowed the touch, however fleeting, it was a breakthrough. So the human was found smiling contently as he followed the elf into the room.
Once in the room Aragorn turned around and bolted the door and then locked it with the key, stowing it safely in his hidden pocket then turned towards the tense elf. When Legolas heard the bolt of the door he spun around sharply ready to flee from the room, but when he saw that the way out was blocked he tensed and waiting for the beratement that he knew was coming. To say that he was confused when none came would be an understatement.
“Legolas...” Aragorn breathed out slowly and before he could stop himself he lunged forward and locked the startled elf into a heartfelt hug. “Legolas...please my love....tell me why you treat me so....I can make it right...whatever I have done....please trust me...I love you and it hurts me to see you hurting so.”
These words broke through the barrier that the Prince placed around his heart and he let tears fall down his face, the first time since that day. Aragorn felt the dampness on his shoulder and pulled his lovers head back to see that he had his eyes clenched shut and tears were streaming down his face. Aragorn was well and truly panicked now. He had NEVER seen his love in such distress before today, and it scared him.
“Shh...Shh...it’s OK, please my love tell me what ails you...let me help.” He said as he moved in and began to kiss the tears away from the pale cheeks of the trembling form in front of him.
“You’ll hate me.” The soft spoken reply was barely heard by the man, but when he realised what was said he placed a hand on each side of the elf’s face and tenderly placed a kiss on the tip of his elf’s nose.
“I promise you...no matter what you say or do I will never hate you.” With this Aragorn led them both over to the double bed that went unnoticed before now. Subtle Gimli, very subtle, Aragorn grinned internally. When he sat on the bed Aragorn positioned himself so that his back was against the wall and then rearranged the elf so that he was snuggling into his side. Aragorn smiled compassionately when he noticed that Legolas was deeply inhaling his scent like he used to do when they were together in Rivendale.
“Now, please tell me what is bothering you so. I hate to see you hurting.” Aragorn followed this up with a quick kiss on the top of the elf’s head and tightened his arms even more, trying to offer silent comfort and support.
Legolas prepared himself and then slowly began his story... “It all happened after I returned to Mirkwood...”
FLASHBACK
Prince Legolas of Mirkwood, was once again being seen running through the corridors of the palace towards the sanctuary of his chambers, unaware of the fact that his father was hurrying behind him fearful for his sons well being.
As soon as Legolas was in his chambers he ran into the bathroom and promptly emptied the contents of his stomach. Amidst the heaving he didn’t notice his father enter the room, gasp, call for a healer and then run to his son’s side. What he did notice was that he had a hand rubbing soothing circles on his back like his mother did when he had a nightmare when he was an elfling. Once he finally finished heaving, he slumped back into the awaiting arms of his father.
Thranduil cradled his son to him and began to rock him back and forth as though he was a mere elfling. “What is wrong my little leaf?” He asked worriedly. Legolas gripped onto his father’s tunic and turned his head and buried it in the fabric.
“I don’t feel well Ada.” He muttered. In no time at all he was scooped into his father’s arms and carried down the corridor to the royal healing wing. With his head buried he didn’t notice that all of his brothers were following him with worried looks on their faces. Before he knew it he had drifted off to sleep.
The next time that he woke up it was to see the smiling faces of his family looking down at him. “Ada?” He muttered confused. Looking around he noticed that he was lying in a bed in the healing rooms. “What wrong with me?” He said panicking as he tried to hurriedly sit up in bed.
The last thing that he expected was to hear his father laugh merrily and pull him into a hug, which soon turned into a family hug when all four of his brothers joined as well. “Nothing is wrong with you Ion-nin.” Thranduil said when he broke the hug. “Quite the contrary, you are pregnant my little leaf.”
Legolas’s mouth opened in shock. It took only a few seconds for him to realise that what his father said was true. As soon as he knew the truth his hand landed on his stomach and a huge grin split across his face. In no time at all he threw himself into his father’s arms and laughed hysterically. “Aragorn is going to be so happy.” He muttered once he was able to control himself.
END FLASHBACK
Aragorn abruptly pushed the Prince away from the embrace that he had and gripped both of his arms. He had a huge smile on his face as he looked into the eyes of his lover. “We have a baby?” He muttered to Legolas.
A choked sob escaped from Legolas as he replied “Nay, we had a baby. I lost it Aragorn. I am so sorry...so...so...sorry.” By the end of the sentence Legolas was sobbing and trembling uncontrollably. The crestfallen Aragorn swiftly pulled him into an embrace and tried to sooth him.
“What happened my love?” he muttered. It took several minutes until Legolas was actually able to answer coherently.
FLASHBACK.
It had been three weeks since Legolas found out that he was carrying Aragorn’s baby, and he has never been more happy. His family were thrilled that there was going to be a new little one to spoil in the family. Legolas only faced one problem: How to tell Aragorn?
He didn’t think that it was appropriate for his to write something of this importance in a letter. So he decided, with the help of his father, that he would ride out to Rivendale to tell him in person. Now he was just waiting for his body to get more used to the changes within himself before he headed off. Blinded by his bliss he did not see the concerned gaze of his father and the healers, who were concerned about the length of time that it is taking for his body to react.
It was on the balcony of his chambers that Legolas felt heartbreak for the first time. Standing watching the sunrise in his light airy sleeping garments he started to feel strange. It was then that he noticed that there was a strange dampness spreading down his legs. Frowning he placed his hand in between his legs and raised his hand to inspect the substance.
He screamed in anguish.
He was bleeding, he was having a miscarriage, he was killing Aragorn’s baby. So trapped in his thoughts the youngest Prince didn’t notice his father and brother come running from the adjacent chamber, to stare in horror at the sight that was before them.
The youngest son of Thranduil was sitting desolately one the floor of his balcony, tears streaming down his face, one hand protectively around his stomach and the other one held out in front of him covered in...Blood. Oh Valar No! Thranduil thought as he rushed forward. Lifted his son into a bridal carry and sprinted into the halls of healing. Screaming for assistance as he went.
END OF FLASHBACK.
Legolas had to stop his story as there were too many tears streaming down his face in order for him to think coherently. Aragorn wept silently into his lover’s hair, grieving for the child that he never met and was never aware of. “Why did you not tell this to me? Why did you deal with the pain yourself?” He muttered into his lover’s hair.
“I thought that you would hate me.... blame me...I couldn’t have survived your anger...it hurt so much to lose our baby...I didn’t mean it...”
“Of course you didn’t mean it!” Aragorn said with a sense of finality in his tone. “Legolas, what happened to the baby, was beyond your control. I wouldn’t have blamed you...Oh how I wish I was there to help you through your grief.” He whispered.
Legolas pulled away from the embrace and looked at his lover through teary eyes. When he noticed that Aragorn also had tears in his eyes he began to apologize again. He raised his hands and used his thumbs to remove the tear tracks off his face, lovingly caressing the cheeks. “I am sorry; I wanted to stop you from feeling the pain over the loss. I didn’t mean to hurt you.” He said as he leaned forward to wrap his arms around his lover’s neck and bury his face into the crook of his neck.
Aragorn reached out and lifted the dangerously light elf into his arms again. Legolas was now sitting in Aragorn’s lap, but was still reluctant to move himself from the embrace. It wasn’t until Aragorn wrapped his arms around his waist that he relaxed completely. He unfastened his grip of Aragorn’s neck and proceeded to lay his arms ontop of Aragorn’s and rub them soothingly. He let his head rest on Aragorn’s shoulder and placed a quick kiss on the exposed flesh before snuggling further into the embrace, manipulating Aragorn’s position until he was more comfortable.
Aragorn chuckled at his lover’s antics and asked “Are you quite comfortable now my prince?” Legolas only looked up to him with half-laden eyes and smiled sleepily to him, the emotional trauma wearing him out. Again Aragorn chuckled and then leant down to place a chaste kiss on his lover’s lips. When he moved away Legolas moaned at the loss. “There will be more time for this when you are well rested my angel.”
His only reply was the small smile that came across the sleeping face of the one he loved the most.
Aragorn fell asleep watching the face of his lover in sleep, this was what he woke to.

I think that this is going to end up being a bit longer than a three shot, but set in three different time frames.

This chapter is for you. Don’t worry the next chapter is more upbeat than this one. More smut as well.
