Black Robes

Ch2

At the entrance to the market, Egalmoth laughed as he pointed off in the distance "Look Ecthelion! Duilin did it! He persuaded Glorfindel to join us!", he then smiled "It will be nice to finally get to know him better."

Ecthelion nodded, then leaned close to his friend "Well, now you will see what I have been talking about. He keeps to himself and, well, my family's House stands right next to his and I rarely see him. 'Tis eerie how emotionless he is, how completely self-possessed. He's intimidating enough with his build, but his self-control makes him… well, almost scary. I would not want *him* as my Captain."

Egalmoth tilted his head "I don't understand."

Ecthelion sighed as he leaned against the wall "My family was invited for evening meal. While our Adars spoke, a Pet came in and knelt next to Glorfindel and called him Master. Glorfindel growled and the pet quickly stood. Twas almost as though he was teaching this Pet not to kneel, or call him Master...and during the whole exchange, Glorfindel never even looked at him, never spoke, but his presence was so commanding that I felt like I should stand, as though I were the Pet being corrected!. He may be the youngest of us, but he made the hairs on the back of my neck prickle. I certainly would not wish to go against him."

Salgant slowly approached the groups usual gathering spot. Ecthelion and Egalmoth both rolled their eyes as he walked up "Go up against whom? Who are you speaking about? I did not hear the whole...the whole uh...is...is that Glorfindel approaching?" he asked, utter disbelief in his voice.

Ecthelion nodded "Aye."

Egalmoth smiled, his excitement evident "Aye, he will be joining us today!"

Salgant raised both of his eyebrows in shock "You jest!"

Ecthelion frowned “Do you not care for Glorfindel?"

Salgant shrugged "Well, like the rest of the young lords here, I hardly know him...but, save for the detached way he carries himself, I like him just fine. I am upset because I now owe Duilin a pet!” Salgant then furrowed his brow "And speaking of Pets...is that not one riding before him?"

As Duilin and Glorfindel approached, Egalmoth spoke up "Glorfindel, you allow your Pets to ride?"

Realizing she was now surrounded by a group of young lords, Jenda swallowed hard. She then released a nervous breath as Glorfindel dismounted and reached up to help her down "My Adar wants pheasant for evening meal. Duilin comes and persuades me to join you...I live rather remotely. Did you wish for us to take all day in getting here."

Ecthelion laughed loudly as he shook his head "Relax Glorfindel, we were just surprised to see her on a horse."

Glorfindel crossed his arms over his chest, his expression blank "Well, then this will more than likely surprise you as well. Jenda"

"Aye my lord?"

"I have absolutely no intention of parading you through the Pet market. I will not risk loosing you to some arrogant elder because you are so well trained. Go to the market and get the pheasant, then ride my horse back home."

Jenda frowned as she moved close and looked up "But my lord, if I take your horse, how will you get back!"

"Are you arguing with me Jenda."

The young elleth swiftly wrapped her arms around his waist and nuzzled just below his chest "Nay my lord, I was only concerned about how you would return home."

Ecthelion, Duilin, Egalmoth and Salgant blinked in shock as Glorfindel calmly stated....

"Tis not like I do not know how to walk Jenda."

"But..."

Glorfindel slowly narrowed his eyes and released a low growl, then nodded as she lowered her gaze in silent compliance. Pulling two coins from his hip satchel, he put them in her hand "Get the bird, and then get yourself midday meal. You may visit for a time, then...Jenda? Then?"

The young dark haired elleth looked up "Take your horse back home, my lord"

"Excellent. Now go."

Once Jenda had run off, Salgant swallowed hard and stepped forward "You...you have a rather disturbing way about you, Glorfindel."

The golden lord shrugged "Such is the will of Iluvatar. Now if you will give me a moment. I need to speak with the horse keeper…and give him permission to release my horse to Jenda.”

As he stepped away. Ecthelion arched his brow "What did I tell you, did I not say he was different? And there is something...I can not put my finger on it...but I want to get to know him better.”

The group nodded in agreement, then spun when they heard a voice above them. Up on the wall, Rog shook his head "Have you seen him spar? I have, he will make a formidable and frightening warrior...tis like he has no fear, or at least embraces it. Odd in one so young.”

Egalmoth chuckled as he yanked him down off the wall "In one so young? Like you are much older!"

Returning, Glorfindel tilted his head some, a slightly amused expression on his face as he watched Rog put Egalmoth in a headlock and laughed "Well I just so happen to be the eldest of our group!"

Glorfindel stepped forward "Are we, or are we not going to the Pet market."

Salgant sighed and put his arm around Duilin "Tul my friend, I owe you a new Pet!"

When the young group of future lords entered the building, the owner swiftly walked over “Well! Do come in my lords, we have many Pets for you to choose from!”

Glorfindel slowly looked around the room at the pets lined up against the wall, his gaze stopping upon a young ellon who was slighter then the others.

Perceiving the young Lord's regard, the young male walked over and gently stroked Glorfindel’s bicep.

Glorfindel growled, his expression a blank mask “Did I give you leave to approach and or touch me” he asked in a deadly quiet voice.

The owner swiftly walked over when he saw the young pet gasp, quickly pull his hand back, then drop to his knees and press his forehead to the floor.

“Is something amiss my lord?”

Glorfindel looked down at the pet at his feet, and then to the owner “He approached and touched me without my leave.”

The owner nodded, trying hard to keep from shuddering. ‘Oh, this lord is different,' he thought. “Did your gaze fall and stay upon him my lord?” he asked.

“Aye.”

“Ah, well that explains it then. I taught them to do as he did…to entice a new Master.”

Glorfindel tilted his head. "I am very particular about what I look for in a Pet." Hearing this, Ecthelion and the others approached.

The owner nodded “Well, they are all very well trained. Feel free to test any, my lord”

Glorfindel looked around the room, and then nodded “Fine, I will test them all at once”

The other lords cringed and covered their ears when Glorfindel suddenly growled loudly “Kneel!!”

Every pet in the room dropped to their knees, and then placed their foreheads to the floor…save one.

Glorfindel waked over to the ellon that only went down on his knees and lowered his head “You there, why did you not do as the others did”

Eyes still down, the pet whispered respectfully “You said “kneel” my lord, not down or bow”
