The Next Morning
“Let go!” Legolas growled through his clenched teeth but the weight on top of him would not relent. Legolas thrashed and kicked with all his might but his desperate struggle only seemed to amuse his attacker.
“Oh little prince, how lovely you are when you are frightened,” Glorfindel was enjoying this very much. Never had any consort excited him the way this fair prince did and his soul was consumed by the need to dominate him.
“I will make you mine, I don’t care how long it takes but I will have your complete submission. I will make you long for my touch.”
Every syllable was laced with sick lust and Legolas screamed as loud as he could to block the fell words out of his head.
*********
The feeling of distressed movement awoke Haldir from his slumber. He looked to see Legolas thrashing in his bed. His arms were extended out in front of him as though trying to fend off some unseen attacker.
“No…I won’t let you…” Legolas cried aloud his nightmare.
Haldir placed his hands on Legolas’ shoulder and shook him. “Legolas wake up,” He pleaded. “You are having a nightmare!”
“No…please don’t…No!”
“Legolas wake up!” Haldir shook Legolas’ shoulders again and this time his blue eyes opened.
Legolas’ vision had been distorted by his nightmare and he mistook the one before him as his tormentor. He immediately pushed away and cried for release. Haldir backed away immediately and waited for Legolas to regain his senses.
Legolas stilled his movements and opened his eyes again. The face before him was not the one he had seen in his nightmare. Mocking blue eyes were replaced by concerned gray and locks of sun-yellow hair became silver blonde. It was not Glorfindel’s face that Legolas saw but Haldir’s.
“Haldir, what are you doing here? Where is my ada?” Legolas, feeling vulnerable, pulled the sheets up to his chest.
“His majesty Thranduil left not too long ago. He stayed with you most of the night. I came in this morning and bid your father to rest and I have looked after you since.” As Haldir spoke, he noticed that Legolas’ hands were still shaking.
Legolas looked at Haldir, his protector and friend. He was home now, he was away from Glorfindel. But the distance between him and his former tormentor was only physical. The nightmare, for all Legolas knew, would be the first of many. Bitterness crept into Legolas’ heart. ‘I’ve escaped his hands, but he’s still in my mind’
Legolas leaned against the headboard of his bed and bore a look of complete despair. His brow creased and his lips were set in a deep frown. Legolas was beside himself with absolute depression. Haldir wanted nothing more than to comfort Legolas, to take him into his arms and hold him till he had driven away the last shadow of fear from Legolas.
As if in response to Haldir’s thoughts, Legolas extended his hand to the former march-warden. Haldir accepted that hand with all his good intentions.
Legolas looked into Haldir’s eyes. Those eyes had always appeared as strong the steel whose color they mimicked. Legolas had always loved the way those eyes looked at him; always full of respect and appreciation. ‘Haldir, would you still look at me the same if you knew what happened to me; if you knew that Glorfindel used me like a whore’
Legolas’ hand suddenly slipped from Haldir’s and the prince rolled to his side with his back facing Haldir. An audible groan escaped the prince.
“Legolas, what is it; shall I go and fetch your father or perhaps the healer?”
“You do too much Haldir, you should go and rest.”
“Legolas, please tell me what is troubling you.” Haldir placed his hand upon Legolas’ shoulder in hopes Legolas would look at him. “Does it have anything to do with the dream you just had.”
“It was nothing, just a dream, that’s all. I assure you that I am alright.”
Legolas’ whole frame tensed and his eyes pinched shut. But even if his body had not reacted the way it did, Haldir still would not have believed Legolas’ words. He knew in his heart the severity of what Legolas had endured during his incarceration in Rivendell. But Haldir also knew that it was not wise to press the matter; at least not at this time. He would wait for Legolas to come to him. But in the mean time, he would care for Legolas in anyway he could.
********
An hour later Legolas found himself being stuffed with food. For weeks his body had been starved of proper nutrition and his great escape from Rivendell to Mirkwood had pushed his already weakened body to its most extreme limit. Besides all of that, Legolas had greatly missed the fresh fruits and other foods that he had grown up with in Mirkwood.
Legolas was working on his fourth cup of tea when he suddenly enquired as to the whereabouts of Lindir and Figwit.
“The two elves that came with you have been assigned to guest quarters.” Haldir really wasn’t sure of the exact location though. Last night he had been so happy to have been reunited with Legolas that he was surprised he even recalled the two strange elves.
Legolas sighed heavily and put his tea cup down. “I should go and see them. I need to find out how they’re doing.” Legolas got up and went to his wardrobe. He selected a simple tunic and pair of Leggings to wear. It was a given that Haldir was coming along. Legolas had some reservations about that because he had no idea how Lindir and Figwit would react to Haldir. But perhaps it would do them good to meet Haldir for it would prove that there were other elves who abhorred slavery.
“I should bring them their breakfast as well. Will you help me carry the trays Haldir?”
“Of course I will, and that is probably a good idea. Perhaps your friends will feel more comfortable on full stomachs.”
By the time Legolas had finished braiding his hair, Haldir was ready to leave. They made a stop at the kitchen as Legolas had wanted although they ended up spending more time there than Haldir expected. Legolas was being so choosy about which foods to give to his friends.
But finally, they were on there way again. As they went along Legolas thought back to the time when he had first met Lindir and Figwit.
********
Legolas didn’t know why Glorfindel had them, perhaps to flaunt his power, but two guards followed close behind as Glorfindel dragged his near, incapacitated body down the hall. Legolas hated to do it but he had to rely on Glorfindel’s hand for support, otherwise, he would collapse to the ground. By the Valar, what had they drugged him with?
The world would not stop spinning and Legolas felt that he would vomit if they didn’t stop walking. He wanted nothing more than to shut his eyes so he would no longer have to be a part of the spinning world. Then, as if an answer to his thoughts, his captor steered him into a room and he found that he could stop momentarily.
Glorfindel kept a tight grip on his captive prince while he dismissed the two guards who had escorted him back to his quarters. Honestly, he couldn’t fathom why Elrond had insisted that Glorfindel take two guards. The Mirkwood prince had been given enough sedative to incapacitate him for a week. But what did it matter now, He had Legolas back in his quarters and Glorfindel would do everything in his power to keep the prince forever.
When the door shut Legolas’ heart sank. It was as though the door to his fate had been sealed and the sound thundered deep and dark in his mind. Glorfindel felt the whole right side of his body collapse suddenly. Legolas had crumpled to the ground and had almost taken Glorfindel with him. The elven lord cursed under his breath before gathering the crippled prince into his arms and proceeded to carry him.
Legolas could feel himself being lifted from the floor and he didn’t like it one bit. It was bad enough that he had to lean on Glorfindel just to walk; must the elf lord humiliate him further by carrying him as well. Legolas squirmed but he only succeeded in amusing Glorfindel.
Glorfindel smirked at the useless efforts being made by the elf in his arms. Yet at the same time a sense of caution sprung up in the warrior. Though Legolas was drugged he still kept fighting. If Legolas was still this determined then Glorfindel could only imagine what kind of challenge the elf would be once he was healthy again. Glorfindel’s cautions had been aroused but even so, he looked forward to breaking the elf that much more. What a challenge he would be. ‘Ah but such things must wait’ Glorfindel thought to himself as he placed Legolas onto his bed. Right away Glorfindel was hit with lust. “I suppose there is no harm in having a little fun in the mean time.”
Legolas could feel his body begin to sink into the mattress and immediately the drugs began to assault him. His eye-lids felt like weights and his body wanted to withdraw into sleep. But the feeling of weight upon his chest was enough to make his body wake up. He opened his eyes to see Glorfindel lying down on top of him.
The agonized groan Legolas emitted amused Glorfindel greatly and he brushed his nose against the side of Legolas’ neck and inhaled deeply the scent of the elf’s fear. “I could do it right now,” He said as he kissed the prince’s cheek. “I could strip off your clothes and have my way with you,” He claimed those rosy lips and oh how he savored the way they quivered. “You could be mine, right now and there would be nothing you could do to prevent it.” Glorfindel thrust his hips into Legolas’ crotch and was rewarded by another cry of despair.
“Oh I would if only I could. But I have business to attend to.” Glorfindel spoke with a sigh of feigned defeat and pulled himself from the bed. “I have a report to make to lord Elrond. So, if you will excuse me my prince,” Glorfindel made a mock bow as he spoke. “I will be off now.”
Legolas turned over onto his side and was instantly his by a bout of nausea. Glorfindel’s scent was all about him and Legolas knew that the bed he was in must have been Glorfindel’s. He would have rolled off the bed and to the ground if he could but he lacked the strength to move. There was nothing for him to do but to cry and despair.
Glorfindel, momentarily, ignored the condition of his prize who now wept upon the bed. Standing in front of him were two elves. Both were slender and shorter than Glorfindel. Though both were pale, one had dark brown hair and pale blue eyes while the other had white hair and vivid gray eyes. Without a word, both elves kneeled before Glorfindel, the identical robes of gray pooling around them.
“Ah, such respect you have for your master.” Glorfindel said to the two elves before him.
“We have awaited your return master,” Spoke the dark haired elf.
“Is there anything you would have us do right now master,” Spoke the fair haired elf.
“I would only have you tend to him who now rests in my bed. I expect you two to demonstrate how best to please and serve me. If he is to be my consort I expect him to learn how to behave as one.” With that, Glorfindel strode out of his chambers and slammed the door behind him. The sound of the lock clicking did nothing to faze the two slaves who still knelt upon the floor. To them, a locked door was as much a part of their lives as the slaves bands they wore around there wrists.
Legolas was still sobbing when he felt a presence in the bed chamber yet again. His heart stopped and cold sweats gathered on his brow for he feared Glorfindel had returned to taunt him-or worse.
His eyes opened to a sight completely different from what he was expecting. Instead of seeing the smug lord standing over him Legolas saw a skinny, pale elf with white hair. Next to him was an elf of similar build but with dark colored hair. Legolas wondered who these strange elves were and had they always been there?
“My name is Lindir and I am the master’s first servant.” Spoke the white haired elf.
“And I am Figwit and also a servant to master Glorfindel.”
Without any other words the two set to work on tending to Legolas. Legolas did nothing while both Figwit and Lindir adjusted his body so that he lay on his back and in the center of the bed. All the while Legolas observed them as best as he could. The tone of their words was so flat and their eyes, such lifeless eyes. It was clear that their spirits were as under nourished as their bodies. The two of them were a pitiful sight and once more, Legolas began to weep.
Lindir paid no heed to Legolas’ tears. He simply pulled the covers up to Legolas’ chin and left the room. Figwit hesitated before following Lindir for something about the prince’s tears moved something within him. Those tears kindled memories that Figwit held long buried.
“I used to cry too,” He whispered. “But I learned that it did no good to remember what I could never have again so I forgot. Whatever you were before, just forget now.” Those were his last words before leaving Legolas.
Legolas’ blood ran cold at hearing Figwit’s words for they were so dead and drained of any desire whatsoever. But it was the message that the elf tried to convey that wrenched Legolas’ heart: how could he just forget? How could he forget Mirkwood and its fair, green canopy and all the wonders that lived there? How could he forget all that was so precious to him?
“Forget; never,” Legolas whispered to any shadow that might be listening. He knew his fight for freedom would be an arduous one and if he was to win, he must never forget who he was, where he came from and who he loved.
********
“Legolas…my prince?”
Haldir’s voice brought Legolas back into the present. “Oh, what is it Haldir?”
Haldir looked very perplexed. “I don’t know exactly. Suddenly you seemed so distant. Even now, there is fear in your eyes.”
Legolas had been so deep in thought that he hadn’t realized the way his body had reacted. A fine sheen of sweat gathered on his brow and he was trembling. Indeed, little ripples danced on the surface of the liquid that filled the jug Legolas carried with him.
“Are you thinking about him, about Glorfindel?”
“No, I was thinking of something even more frightening to me than him. I was thinking about the day I first met Lindir and Figwit. I realized that by looking upon them, I might very well be looking into my own future.”
Haldir didn’t know what to say. Haldir shuddered himself for he too had seen the results of the bondage that lower class elves were subjected to. The slaves were no more than walking corpses who did only as their masters bid them to. Haldir couldn’t bear the thought of Legolas being reduced to such. And knowing that his kindred were still responsible for such crimes…
“Legolas, maybe I shouldn’t be here right now.”
“What do you mean Haldir?”
“I am an elf of the Lorien kindred. My people have subjugated elves like Lindir and Figwit for centuries. Perhaps it would not be wise for them to see me right now.”
Legolas mulled over what Haldir had just told him. Maybe it wasn’t a good idea to begin introducing Lindir and Figwit to other elves so soon. They had been through so much and Legolas did not want to overwhelm them. But Legolas remained optimistic.
“I understand what you are saying Haldir but it may not be as bad as you think. I mentioned you to Figwit and Lindir from time to time and told them good things about you.”
Haldir was surprised by Legolas’ words, not once did he really think that Legolas would think of him during his captivity. Now Haldir learned that Legolas spoke of him as well and a great satisfaction welled in his heart.
“My Prince, are you certain.”
“Yes Haldir, I am sure that once I introduce you, all will be well. I also would feel better if you stayed with me.”
It was against his better judgment but Haldir wanted to trust Legolas on this. But still, Haldir braced himself for the potentially awkward situation that lay ahead.
*********
For a while, Lindir tried to ignore the growling of his stomach but it had become quite the losing battle. He knew it was not yet his feeding time but perhaps if he asked politely, master Glorfindel would allow him an early breakfast. It had worked before. Lindir didn’t see why it wouldn’t now.
Still half asleep, Lindir sat up to climb out of bed but the moment his feet made contact with the floor he was assailed by pain. Lindir threw himself back onto the bed. His eyes flew open to find his entire surroundings changed. He was in a cavernous chamber lit by many candles. Gone was the scent of water that he was familiar with. In stead the smell of earth and trees were all around him. Nothing was familiar, nothing at all.
The sound of panicked breathing caused Figwit to stir into wakefulness. He felt so soar and stiff and the slightest movement brought discomfort. But he recognized the startled whimpers of Lindir. Figwit, despite his protesting muscles, turned toward the source of the sounds.
Lindir sat on the bed opposite to his own. His knees pulled to his chest and his face pale. Lindir looked utterly bewildered-had he forgotten they were now in Mirkwood?
“Lindir…” Figwit’s voice was a hoarse whisper.
Lindir’s head snapped in his direction and he tumbled out of his bed. Lindir’s feet were too sore to not him so he crawled over to Figwit’s bed and immediately climbed in. Figwit reached for Lindir and pulled him to his chest.
“What is this place…where are we?” Lindir stammered.
“We are in Mirkwood. Don’t you remember? We escaped Rivendell with Legolas?”
At hearing that, Lindir began to calm down. That was right; he and Figwit had indeed left Rivendell for the promise of freedom in Mirkwood. Lindir could feel Figwit stir beneath him; the elf was trying to sit up. Lindir moved aside and helped Figwit into a sitting position and they began to take in their surroundings.
Not only was the room they were in carved from stone but tree roots clung to the stone ceiling forming natural supports. The headboards of the beds were carved from dark colored oak and embellished with simple patterns; very different from the artistic, geometric patterns that Rivendell art was famous for. A heavy, wool curtain hung on the wall between the two beds and below that was a table with a wash basin and some bandages.
Lindir was having trouble taking in all the differences and he didn’t even want to think about what awaited them outside of this room. Lindir entwined his fingers with Figwit’s and their hands came together in a tight grasp. At least they still had one thing that was familiar and that was each other.
Suddenly, a soft knock roused them. Lindir pushed into Figwit who in turn, wrapped his arms around Lindir. Who was it that came for them?
“Lindir, Figwit are you awake? It is I, Legolas.”
Both elves shared a sigh of relief, it was only Legolas. After a moment of hesitation, Figwit answered Legolas and the prince came in. Their eyes went to the trays of food that Legolas placed on a table just beside the door. Figwit and Lindir smiled at the sight of food. It was only until they became aware of the elf with Legolas that everything changed.
The first thing Haldir became aware of was the look of fright on the face of the white-haired elf. Haldir dared not go any closer and tried to make himself look as non-threatening as possible. But the white-haired elf’s fear had spread to his dark-haired companion.
“A Lorien elf...” Figwit cried as he shrank against the headboard. Lindir shrieked and did the same. Legolas went over to them immediately and tried to calm them.
“It’s alright, it’s alright he is a friend.” Legolas patted their shoulders and repeated that the one with him meant no harm. But the two elves were on the verge of hysterics.
Haldir had no idea what say or to do and he had never before felt so uncomfortable or so helpless. The way the dark-haired elf had looked at him, like he blamed him for something, caused guilt to over take Haldir and he left the room.
Legolas tried for several more minutes to calm his two friends. It was only until they realized that Legolas was alone again that they began to calm down. Both of them were pale and sweat clung to their brows.
“I’m sorry I didn’t mean to frighten you so. I just wanted you to meet Haldir.”
“That…that was Haldir?” Lindir said.
“Yes, he’s the good friend I told you about.” Legolas sighed. “I’m so sorry, it was wrong of me to bring him here.” Legolas’ stomach twisted with a knot of regret. Haldir had warned him about asking Lindir and Figwit to meet some one new so soon. And now Haldir had been forced to leave and Legolas felt awful.
‘So that was Haldir, the one you talked about so much’ Lindir thought as he began to regain some of his composure. Figwit only collapsed back down on the mattress and pulled the sheets over his head. Lindir doubted there was anything that could make Figwit overcome his fear of Lorien elves. It was because of the Lorien kindred that Figwit had known so much pain for so long.
“I brought you two some food,” Legolas said trying to break the awkwardness of the moment.
Lindir’s stomach answered for him. Legolas smirked at the audible growl Lindir’s stomach delivered. Up until then, Lindir had forgotten about his hunger and he blushed. Legolas brought food trays and a jug over and placed them on the table in between the beds. The next thing he did was pull back the curtain that hung just above that same table.
Lindir had to shield his eyes for the sunlight came pouring in. Lindir had never expected to see a window in this kind of dwelling but there it was carven from the stone and filled with glass. And just out side of that window were trees and blue skies.
Figwit emerged from underneath the covers in response to the light. He could see the sun light and the blue sky; he wanted a closer look. Legolas smiled as Figwit got out of the bed and padded over the window. Legolas undid the latch and pushed open the glass panel; now the room was filled with the scent of fresh air. Figwit wasted no time breathing it in.
“When you are ready, you may go exploring if you wish.” Legolas said casually as he ladled some soup into a bowl.
“Outside…do you mean that?” Figwit sounded so surprised and his eyes were filled with disbelief. Lindir Looked equally surprised. But Legolas was not too puzzled by their reactions. Both Lindir and Figwit had spent a great portion of their lives in bondage. As such, they were never allowed out on their own. Legolas also understood that breaking that kind of conditioning was not going to be an easy task.
Figwit continued to stare out the window. Even as Legolas handed him some soup and bread for him to eat, he kept staring. Lindir gladly reached for his bowl. The cuff of his night shirt fell back and revealed the silver slave bracelet that still adorned his wrist.
“Yes, you may go outside when you wish. And you no longer need those bracelets.” Legolas said as he indicated to the bracelet. The bracelet was embellished with Glorfindel’s crest.
“Not need them?” Lindir looked bewildered at the idea.
“You are not property anymore. You never should have been thought as such to begin with.“
Figwit listened to Legolas’ words. He put his bowl down and pulled back the sleeve of his night shirt. He too wore a bracelet identical to the one that Lindir wore. The bracelet’s function was to make it known whose property he was.
“But my master gave this to me to prove that I belonged to someone, that I was no longer available to any who wished to-“
“Don’t tell me that after all we have been through that you still think of yourself as his property!”
In the hall outside the room, Haldir could hear Legolas' exclamation and all he could think was how unlike himself Legolas sounded at the moment.
“Do you still feel loyalty to Glorfindel even after what he let Elladan do to Figwit?”
Figwit went pale and buried his face in his hands. He rejoined Lindir on the bed and huddled against the wall. His breathing quickened to shallow pants and he rocked himself back and fourth. Lindir went to him and tried to calm him.
Legolas lamented at the mess he had just caused but he believed he was right. If Lindir and Figwit were to ever build new lives for themselves then they had to first abandon any feelings of loyalty to Glorfindel.
Lindir and Figwit cowered as though a cruel punishment were to be dealt to them. Frustration suddenly welled within Legolas. He couldn't understand how anyone, especially after enduring the treatment that Glorfindel was infamous for, could still believe in the principals that Glorfindel enforced.
Legolas suddenly felt suffocated, he just couldn't be around the two elves right now. His feelings were made all the more potent by his hatred of Glorfindel. With great haste, Legolas crudely placed the dishes down and stormed out of the room. Lindir and Figwit felt nothing but the cold chill left in Legolas' wake.
*********
Once outside, Legolas was confronted by a very perplexed Haldir. “Legolas, what was that?"
“What are you talking about Haldir?” Legolas retorted coldly even though he had not meant to.
“What just happened, why did you come down on Figwit so?”
“I don’t understand Haldir, they are free now; they don’t have to act like slaves anymore. Why can't they just forget?”
“But Legolas, you know just as well as I do that slavery is the only life some of Mirkwood's refugee's have ever known.” Haldir implored.
"So, I only want to break what ever hold Glorfindel might still have on them, to help them see that they can make choices for themselves now.”
“I understand that Legolas but you cannot force that on them either. They are not like you Legolas, to them, making choices for themselves is more perilous than-”
"THEY WILL LEARN!"
Legolas' outburst caused Haldir to take an involuntary step back. Never had he seen Legolas behave this way before. Quite honestly, Haldir never thought Legolas capable of such behavior.
"They will learn, I'll see to it that Lindir and Figwit change. I will make them forget all about that bastard Glorfindel if it is the last thing I ever do. I will not let him win."
Silence fell between the two elves. Legolas looked as though he was fighting some great internal struggle, Haldir could see it in his eyes. Legolas' cheeks were bright red and the faintest glimmer of tears touched his eyes.
Haldir stood frozen in place. He could see the pain that Legolas was in and could hear the agony in his words. "By the Valar, what did that monster do to you?" Haldir glided to Legolas and extended his arm in comfort.
The reaction Legolas gave him was enough to break the elven warrior's heart. Legolas shrank away from Haldir's touch and ran away down the hall without a word. Haldir did not pursue, he knew that Legolas would want time to be alone. Yet his heart ached, not because of Legolas' behavior but more for the cause of it. Haldir was well aware of the treatment suffered by slaves.
Legolas might recover physically but the scars on his heart and soul were apparent in his eyes. Haldir didn't know for certain what tortures Legolas had endured. But what he did know was that Legolas needed him now, more than ever.
“Don't worry my love I will be here when you are ready”
*******
Lindir and Figwit remained within their quarters for the remainder of the day. Legolas had brought them enough food to last them the day and the two of them were grateful for it. Neither one wished to have to venture outside the room just yet. The afternoon gave way to shades of dusk and Lindir soon drifted off to sleep.
Figwit stayed awake and watched as the color of the sky changed with the sunset. The window that Legolas opened that morning had yet to be closed. But Figwit did not want to close that window and continued to take in the sights and smells that it admitted into the room.
Outside was a whole new world, not just for him, but for Lindir as well. Already, Figwit was curious about what Mirkwood might have to offer him. He squeezed Lindir’s hand in hopes that Lindir would explore this new home and life with him.
