Chapter Two

Mirkwood

“Ada, you must eat,” said the sweet voice of his daughter, Aranel. “You cannot go on like this.”

Thranduil sighed and turned his head to look out his doors leading to the balcony. “How can I eat when the food curdles in my stomach,” the king asked looking at her once again. “How can a father dine knowing his son is gone? I am not hungry, take the tray away, leave me in my sorrow.”

The elleth knew better than to argue with her father when he got this way and sighed as she left his private chambers. On her way out she ran into the healer on his way to check on the king.

“Maybe you can talk some sense into him, Eruviluion,” she said, her frustration showing on her beautiful face. “He will not eat again tonight and I grow tired of trying to force him. Ada will no longer allow us to mention my brother’s name.”

“The king will not listen to me any more than he will listen to you, Aranel, you know this.” Eruviluion was a kind and patient elf, usually the one person the king would confide in, but not after the loss of his son. “I will check on him, go, find something that will ease your mind and make you smile.”

Once the princess was on her way, the healer entered the king’s chambers. Thranduil looked up and rolled his eyes when he saw him. “Why must you continue to torment me?”

“Ai, we have been friends for more years than I care to count, Thranduil, why would I change at this late date?”

“Compassion,” the king asked.
“Compassion,” Eruviluion chuckled. “No, I am all out of compassion, caring for you has used it all up.” He turned serious and looked at the king. “We need to speak honestly, sire.”

Thranduil grunted in reply, not wanting to hear what the healer was going to say.

“I think you need to spend some time away from Mirkwood,” he held up his hand to stop the king’s objection. “Some time spent in Imladris and with Lord Elrond could help you face this grief that has taken hold of you.”

“I do not need to spend time with Elrond, I will be fine in a few weeks,” Thranduil insisted. “I just need time to come to terms with losing my son.”

“Sire, is has been weeks, it has been more than weeks and you have done nothing but sit in your chamber and refuse all those who try to help you.” Eruviluion spoke harshly to his king, but that is what Thranduil needed.

“Who will run the kingdom,” he asked, eyebrows raised.

“The same ones who are running it now, your advisors,” Eruviluion said, pointedly, not letting the king take that way out. “There is no reason you cannot go to Imladris, everything will be taken care of here.”

Thranduil groaned. “Fine, you are right, there is no reason I cannot go. I will away as soon as everything can be arranged. You must send a message ahead that I am traveling there.”

“I sent the message this morning, my king,” the healer stated on his way out the door.

//Legolas was laughing as he continued to splash Elladan and Elrohir with water. The three of them had spent the morning cleaning out the stables at Elrond’s insistence. They were being punished for spiking the juice for the meeting between the delegations of Imladris and the mannish kingdom of Rohan. When they finished, they sprinted to the Bruinen to swim the afternoon away. Elrohir, of course, started the water fight by dunking their Mirkwood friend and Legolas not knowing which twin had committed the act, attacked them both, just to be sure he got the right one. Elladan retaliated against Legolas and his brother, knowing Elrohir had done the deed.

“I am innocent, Legolas,” he yelled, laughing, above the splashing water.

“I am sure you have done something in the past I failed to repay you for,” the wood elf answered, still laughing.

Elladan thought it was the most beautiful sound in the world, but shook the thought out of his head and he disappeared under water and grabbed Legolas by the legs. He could hear his friend’s scream and his brother’s laughter as he lifted him and pushed him several feet away causing a large splash as he landed in the water.

Legolas reappeared coughing, but laughing even harder. He hiccupped and tried to suppress his laughter, but it wasn’t working. “That was most fun, mellonen, but warn me next time so that I don’t take a stomach full of river water.”

“I think that was the whole point, Legolas, surprise,” Elrohir said, shaking his head and chuckling.

“Of course it was,” Elladan replied, grinning. “I was tired of getting splashed and that seemed the only way to stop you.”//

Elladan growled in frustration and turned over in his bed. It seemed like every time he was about to fall asleep another memory of Legolas would play through his mind, leaving him aching for the fallen prince. Angry with himself and angry with Legolas‘ memory, he tossed his covers off and headed to Elrohir’s room to see if they could perhaps talk.

He knocked lightly on his brother’s door as he opened it and was glad to find Elrohir in bed reading. “Is there room for me?”

Elrohir looked up and smiled at his brother before lifting his cover in a way of welcome.

Elladan slipped in and settled against the headboard. “Do you think about him?” He knew he didn’t have to say who, his twin would know.

The younger twin closed the book and looked at his brother with sad eyes. “Yes, but I have a feeling you think about him a lot more than I do.”

“Why do you say that, little brother,” he asked, raising an eyebrow in imitation of their father.

“You know why and if I need to tell you, you are more dense than I thought,” Elrohir replied. “I know you loved him.”

“I love him still,” Elladan said softly, his heart aching with every word.

Elrohir wrapped his arms around his brother and held him, offering all the comfort he could. When Elladan finally fell asleep, he blew out the candle and settled beside him. He wondered what would become of his twin, would he fade and in that case would he himself also fade? He was too tired to figure it out and allowed himself to sleep.

“I received at message this morning from Mirkwood,” Elrond announced at breakfast. When he had everyone’s attention he continued. “Thranduil is coming so that he may spend some time away and perhaps talk about Legolas’ death. Eruviluion, the head healer, informs me that the king will allow no one to speak the princes name in his presence so, when he is here, do not say anything about him. Am I understood?”

Elladan nodded his understanding, but couldn’t imagine not speaking about Legolas to the king. He so wanted to share his grief and the love for his son with the Mirkwood royal, but now that was even impossible.
