Patient Expectations of Indigo

Part: 2/? (rather short chapter)

Pairing: Erestor/Glorfindel

Rating: R for now, possibly higher in later chapters

Timeline: Valinor and Beyond...

Warning: erm...slash, a bit of angst, DEFINITE AU

Author's Note: On endearments - Elrond's use of "my love" and
such when speaking privately to Erestor is indicative of a deep
affection for his friend, not the kind of intimate
relationship/ passion he would share with a lover or spouse. In
later chapters, I will attempt to distinguish between the use
of "Lady", as simply a form of respect to someone of a higher power
or social caste, and the use of "my Lady", which is how Elrond often
refers to his wife. The addition of the possessive to the phrase
carries, in his case, an implication of "I submit myself to you,"
or "You rule me". Which, I think, would be quite a statement of
sentiment for someone like Elrond, who is so used to being in
control/ruling. So, no, he is not planning to leave Celebrian for
Erestor. He's quite happy with his spouse (in this story, at least).

3200 years later

Elrond eyed the solitary figure staring out to sea, a black-clad
sentinel against the peach and rose evening sky. He sighed. The
elf's diligence and loyalty were admirable. Charming even. But it
was still painful to watch his friend and former advisor stand alone
on that peer, withdrawing into himself more with every passing year.
He approached his friend and propped his chin on a slender shoulder,
arms wrapping around the other elf in a gentle hug.

Erestor smiled and leaned back into the embrace, one had squeezing a
strong wrist while the other reached up to pat Elrond's smooth cheek
Elrond sighed again. "Eres – "

"Nay, Elrond," Erestor interrupted, "do not bother. We have had
this same conversation these past four hundred years. I know what
you will suggest, and you know what my reply will be."

"Aye, I do. But I still think you should consider your options.
There are many here who find you more than passing fair, and would
dearly welcome a chance to court you."

"I know," the other elf said quietly. "But I fear any relationship
I should enter into will end in pain and disaster. My heart is no
longer mine to give. It has not been for a long time."

"Erestor, have you given thought to the idea that maybe the reason
Glorfindel has not come to Valinor is because he cannot come to
Valinor?"

Erestor looked over his shoulder at his longtime friend. "What?
Surely the Valar would not grant him new life, only to deny him the
white shores."

Elrond shook his head. "Nay, you mistake my meaning. You said he
promised to sail once the fates of my children were known. But he
has not. Even if Elladan and Elrohir had chosen immortality, they
would have sailed when Arwen passed. And if they chose to be
counted among the Edain…" Here his voice faltered. "They could not
have lingered this long."

The former advisor sighed. "I know what you say, and your logic is
sound. In any other case, I would even agree with you. But, this
time logic does not work. Mandos would not be so cruel as to accept
Glorfindel's feär into his Halls once more and not tell me.
Besides, he still lives. I feel it."

"Then why has he not come?"

"If I knew the answer to that, we would not be having this
conversation again. But, the point is, he is still alive, and so I
will wait." Erestor's arms crossed. "I am positive he will have a
good explanation for his delay when he arrives." //He had better…//

Seeing the mulish expression on his friend's sharp features, Elrond
gave in gracefully. "Of course he will. Forgive me for casting
doubt. I merely worry."

Erestor's expression softened. "I know you do, and I love you for
it. But you should save your fretting for when he returns." A
wicked grin lit his eyes. "I can guarantee that once I have him
back in my arms, it will be a long time before you see either of us
again."

Elrond chuckled. "As you say, my love." He pressed a kiss to the
elf's temple. "I was sent to tell you that my Lady expects you for
dinner tonight. Her exact words were `tell him it would be in his
best interest not to ignore the invitation', end quote."

Erestor laughed. "As the Lady bids, so must I do."
