The Colour of Love

The Colour of Love
Author: Tuxedo Elf
Character: Rúmil
Rating: PG
Summary: Written for the 50 Passages challenge. Prompt 1 – ‘I knew I'd want it, if I hadn't got it!’

*************

Clothes scattered the guestroom floor like leaves in autumn and they continued to rain down as Rúmil dropped item after item from the draws to the floor.

"Nothing, absolutely nothing," he moaned despondently, looking at Orophin, who was sitting on the bed. "Oh, why didn't I bring my blue tunic? I knew I'd want it, if I hadn't got it!"

Orophin looked mildly irritated. "Rúmil, you have lots of nice tunics here! I saw you packing - you bought at least four!"

"Yes, but not the blue one!" Rúmil waved his hands about in frustration. "Blue is Lindir's favourite colour!"

Sighing in exasperation, Orophin got up, selected a maroon tunic with gold trim and shoved it into Rúmil's hands.

"Rúmil. Unless Lindir is extremely shallow, and in that case not worth your time, he will not care what colour tunic you are wearing. He may even appreciate you not wearing blue, if his favourite colour is so well known! Maroon is a good colour for you, much better than blue." He glared at his brother and Rúmil withered under the gaze.

"As you wish," he sighed. This was going to be a disaster!

**********

An hour later, dressed in the maroon tunic and black leggings, Rúmil met Lindir by the fountain in the courtyard. The minstrel smiled as he approached and Rúmil's heart skipped a beat.

"Good evening." Lindir smiled charmingly.

"It is indeed," Rúmil responded, taking in the minstrel, who was dressed in a robe of dark green, somewhat to his surprise "Shall we walk?"

Lindir nodded and Rúmil liked their arms, leading Lindir towards the beautiful gardens. They walked in silence for a time, until the minstrel finally spoke.

"You look lovely, if I may say so," he said, blushing slightly. "Usually when I meet someone for a first date, they always wear blue! It has not been my favourite colour since before my majority, but no one ever believes me! I get quite sick of it!”

Rúmil chuckled. "Oh, I always preferred to be different!" he replied easily.

Inside though, he was cringing. Orophin was never going to let him live this down!
