Summary: After a tragic accident Erestor must once again learn how to fly.
A/N: This chapter is in loving memory of “Long-Eared Owl One Wing”. May her spirit live on through my memory and my story.

Erestor was startled awake by a pounding on his door. It took him several moments to figure out where the sound was coming from, and when he finally gathered his wits together he called for whoever it was to enter.

Elladan opened the door slowly in direct contrast to the incessant way he had been pounding on it just a moment before. “Erestor?” he queried meekly.

The councilor groaned in irritation. “What is it, child?”

The twin entered, followed closely by his brother. He held in front of him a soft cloth bundle that was dirtied and stained.

“We just got back from patrol, and…well…we found this…” Elladan held the bundle out to Erestor.

The dark elf simply stared at it and gave Elladan a look that said he was not amused in the least. Elladan peeled back the cloth to reveal what lay inside.

Erestor’s eyes softened, and he gently took the bundle from the elder twin. A little face peered at him from the folds of the cloth. Large, frightened yellow eyes stared at the unfamiliar environment in undisguised terror. The tiny owl hissed in its most threatening way, and it clacked it beak loudly. Its ear tufts were plastered to its head, and it was covered in mud and blood. “Oh, darling,” Erestor said quietly. “What happened to you, little one?”

Elrohir cleared his throat. “We found it while looking for firewood last night. It was just lying on the forest floor. Something is wrong with its wing, I think. I scooped it up in that cloth and figured I would bring it to you. You know more about birds than I do. I couldn’t just leave it there to die.”

“Help me to the healing wing,” Erestor said as he hefted himself to his feet, “I need to look at her injuries where I have access to healing herbs and bandages.” Elladan immediately handed the councilor his cane, and Elrohir took the owl back from Erestor.

They slowly traversed the halls, taking time to accommodate Erestor’s limp. When they arrived at the healing wing, Erestor collapsed onto a stool located next to an examination table. He directed the twins to gather herbs, bandages, and other odds and ends with which he could treat the tiny owl.

He had Elladan hold the bird’s feet while he looked over the injuries. He gave the bird a grain of concentrated aconite and one of arnica. Erestor look hold of the right wing that was drooping terribly, and sighed sadly. “Oh, no sweetheart,” he said sadly.

“What’s wrong with it?” Elrohir asked in a whisper from where he watched over Erestor’s shoulder.

“Look here-” Erestor showed the twins a large wound in the bird’s wing. “It has a very bad break. The fracture’s old and has started to rot. The infection alone will kill it. There is nothing we can do for the wing. It’ll die.”

Elladan’s eyes widened with sadness. “Oh,” was all he could say as he looked down on the tiny body in his hands.

“Do you think it could live like your falcon if Ada removed her wing?” Elrohir asked.

Erestor furrowed his brow in thought. “It’s not as young as my bird was when she lost her wing. This one has lived its entire life having two wings, and I don’t know if it would be able to adapt to only having one wing.”

“Can we try? I…I don’t want it to die.”

Looking into the terrified eyes of the little owl, which was still fighting for its life regardless of its injuries, Erestor couldn’t help but say, “We will try.”
