Chapter Two

“Why in the bloody hell do you want to go to America?” cried King William.

“I want to experience a new life. A life without the bloody press bugging my arse. A life where I can do whatever the hell I want, meet whoever I want… I’d like to go and find someone who can accept me for who I really am.”

“Honey, you’re a prince,” the Queen said.

“No, you don’t understand. I would like to meet someone who can love me for the bloke that I am, not because of a title that I own.”

Both his parents sat in silence listening to this unusual request.

“If you go to America, what will you do?” asked his father.

“Go to college, experience college life, live in a dorm, be normal.”

“I see… you’ll have to let us think about this Billy, what you’re asking for is very difficult.”

“I understand father, take your time.”

Billy walked around the halls of the palace and spotted his sister Margaret in the garden.

“How are you Maggie?”

“I’m fine Billy. What is wrong? Was father upset with you? I saw him early furious and he mentioned your name and then he summoned you to his study with the doors closed!”

“You know he was, but Maggie, I had an idea and I’d like your opinion.”

Billy and Margaret sat down by the fountain and Billy told her about his idea of going to America to experience something new. Of how tired he was of everywhere and people bothering him, photographers following him everywhere to taking pictures of him. She was listening carefully.

“Okay… I think it’s a good idea that you try something different, besides we’re only known in Europe.”

“Yes! I thought about that too! I’d love to walk down the street and be normal for once, for people to treat me like a real person, to have real friends!”

“Obviously you will not reveal your true identity, as that would cause a riot and would be stupid of you to do. You don’t want reporters following you around.”

Billy rolled his eyes and nodded.

“But here’s what concerns me… if one of your intensions is to find love, how would father and mother react? Do they know about your orientation?”

“No one does Maggie, you of all people know that. Only you and Mark know.”

Billy remembered when he confessed his homosexuality to his sister, he was 20 and she was 18. The reason why Billy told Maggie is because she has always been an open person. Her main interest is for Billy to be happy. If being gay means happy to Billy, so be it.

“Well, if you come home with a bloke and you’re to be king, what would he be?”

“I know that I cannot marry a man, but if I do bring one home with me, I’ll have to come up with a solution. But it’s not like it’s going to happen!”

Margaret raised her eyebrows and both laughed. One of the servants came and interrupted their conversation.

“Excuse me your majesties, the King is requesting you Prince Billy.”

Both Billy and Margaret looked at each other and Billy stood to follow the servant. Once inside his father’s study again, Billy sat down on the couch, his mother beside him and his father across from him.

“Well, your mother and I have been discussing what you would like to do and we decided that you can go but under one condition.”

“What is that?”

“We get to choose the state and the university.”

“Yes sir.”

“Right then! It’s settled; you’ll go to America for as long as you need to. You will never reveal your true identity; remember that royalty is always stalked and it’s for your safety.”

“Yes father.”

“And you’ll behave yourself for God sakes Billy and try to live a decent life. You’ll be supplied with money for as long as you need it.”

“Yes father, whatever you want.”

“I’ll give you a cell phone that is only for emergencies. The only number you can dial is the palace’s, and only in case of an emergency.”

“Alright father.”

“Settled then! You’ll leave in one week! I’ll make sure no one outside the palace knows that you’re abroad because it’s none of their bloody business anyway!”

Billy and the Queen smiled.

“Thank you father!” Billy cried, went to his father and embraced him; The King chuckled and returned the embrace. Then he went to his mother and embraced her too. When Billy left the study, he locked himself in his room and let out a shriek of joy
