ii. The Conversation
ii. The Conversation
“Dommie, there you are! Where’ve you been?”, Dominic’s mother asked as he stepped through the doorway of their house.
“I…I had a conversation. With a friend.”, Dom lied and rushed into the bathroom to wash his hands. He didn’t want to bother his mother with his problems about having detention. He had a lot of trouble lately at school with being…well, with being Dominic Monaghan. And after all, his Dad was his friend.
As he was about to leave the bathroom he looked shortly into the mirror. That damn scar would never go away. He ran a finger along the fine line above his right eye. He blinked several times and returned to the kitchen to join his mother at the table.
“Dominic, I have to talk to you. It’s important.”, his mother began and made Dom feel uncomfortable. What news could it be?
“You know it’s been almost a year since your father died. And I haven’t been in quite a good condition since then…”
“I noticed.“ it popped out of Dom’s mouth. Recognizing that he had said it aloud he quickly stuffed his mouth with a piece of steak and potatoes. His mother looked up and blushed slightly.
“I’m sorry…that you had to see this.”, she went on. “But things will change now.”
“How’s that?”, Dom asked and ate on.
“I…I’ve met someone.”
Dom inhaled and the food at once got stuck in his throat; he began choking and coughing and reaching out for air. His mother stood up and patted him several times on his back till Dom could breathe easily again.
“What was that? You’ve met someone?” He looked up at her in disbelief. It’s been 10 months and 13 days exactly since the accident, Dominic corrected his mother in his thoughts.
“Yes. And I want you to know that if this is a problem for you I will end this relationship immediately. But I…I’m feeling better now, Dommie. Please understand. Give the guy a chance, maybe you like him? Maybe-“
“He’s not gonna replace Dad. No one ever will.”, Dom interrupted her and shot her a furious glance.
“Of course not, how could you possibly think something like that? No one’s ever gonna replace your Dad. I loved him. You know I did. And you loved him, too. And that won’t change.” She sighed deeply. “But I have to go on, Dominic. I need to live again. And it was by accident that I met that guy. I wasn’t looking for a new boyfriend or whatever. It just happened.”
Dominic inspected his food, poked the broccoli with his fork, then faced his mother again.
“If it makes you happy again, then it’s all right with me.”
His mother smiled, the first time he had seen her doing that in a long time, actually, and she embraced her son. He let himself being kissed by her on the forehead and then send to bed. He knew he wouldn’t be able to sleep again, but the only thing he wanted was to make his mother happy. Well, apparently he just now had lost to the new guy.
