Chapter one Walk in the garden
Elrond deeply inhaled the night air. This walk did him good. He looked over his shoulder and smiled sadly. Why did life have to be so cruel? Why did he have to lose his heart to someone who was already taken? He sighed and walked on. No use dwelling on this subject. It wouldn’t change the painful truth.
He stopped paying attention to his surroundings and allowed the trees to soothe his mind.
Suddenly a shudder coursed through the wood and he became alert again.
Focusing he detected an alien presence close to his left; alien and evil.
Silently he moved closer, determined to get a good look at the invaders and when he peeked around the tree his breath got caught in his throat. Yrch! Now he was in danger.
The creatures stood and seemed to have detected him as well.
He instantly dashed away, knowing his life was in peril. How did they get past the patrols? Past the security guards? And how would he get out of this alive? The wind blowing around him provided the answer. It reminded him of his mother’s shift. He could shift too, and later, once he was safe, he could undo it.
He nodded and focused deep, mentally saying the spell that would turn him. Two seconds later the elflord was gone and a ferocious, swift animal ran towards the manor.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Glorfindel nodded and halted the training. “It is enough for the eve. Go home, shower and sleep deep, for tomorrow is another gruelling day.”
His men snorted but prepared to leave.
Suddenly screams sounded through the air and Glorfindel dashed into the direction of its origin. “Man?”
Maidens ran towards him and he could see why. /What is that?/
He signalled for his men to form a line.
The animal stopped running and remained at the spot, not moving a muscle for several minutes. Suddenly it released a howl, which seemed to be angry and Glorfindel raised his sword, ready to defend his home.
“Seneschal?”
He ignored the voice and was focused on the beast. He yelped when he was shoved aside.
“Glorfindel, really. Attacking animals now?”
Glorfindel muttered as Erestor glared at him before kneeling on the ground, holding out a piece of meat. “Erestor, what are you doing?”
The counsellor kept his gaze on the animal even as he spoke. “I was on my way to bed when I heard the commotion and on my way out to see what caused it I saw this. The poor thing probably followed his nose. You know Elrond’s kitchen is the best in the world.” The tone was mocking and he smiled at the animal.
Glorfindel sighed. “All right, wise guy, what is it?”
Erestor laughed. “You should read more, you know? This is a bastam or obastam, one of the fastest catlike creatures in the world.” He looked up and smiled. “Don’t let the lethal appearance fool you, Glorfindel. They are not predators. They are omnivores and real opportunists. If they do not have to hunt, they don’t. But I do wonder what brought it here. There’s enough food in the woods.” His eyes narrowed. “Not to mention the fact it is alien to our region. Even in Mirkwood it is rare to see one.”
Glorfindel shrugged and was about to turn and leave when his eyes saw his sword turn blue. “Yrch!” He quickly scanned the trees and saw them. “Leithio i philiniath!” (release the arrows: Fire!)
Erestor stood and gaped at the scene. He didn’t fully understand it was happening, and failed to see how it could be happening. Suddenly he felt his robe being tugged and in a daze he obediently followed the lead.
Glorfindel and the soldiers swiftly dealt with the threat and the seneschal ordered several scouts and patrols to re-secure the borders. He too was surprised at this and he realised they had been extremely fortunate.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Elrond inwardly growled. Why wasn’t it working? He had said the spell, but he still was a cat. A cat and staring at Glorfindel’s sword and several arrows of his own archers. /Good thing I didn’t wish to be turned into a warg, I suppose./ How was he to tell them what was wrong?
He was still debating it when Erestor kneeled before him, holding out a slice of meat. Even though he had eaten his fill the scent caressing his nostrils was inviting and it was his favourite. He laid down and decided to temporarily stop worrying. He would find out what was wrong later.
And then Glorfindel’s order sounded.
Elrond jumped up and smelled them. His first thought was to aid Glorfindel, now that he was a dangerous animal he had a chance to do some serious harm to them, but seeing Erestor motionless prompted him into grabbing the robes and dragging the other inside.
He smiled when Erestor came back to himself and was about to dash out and aid the archers when he heard Erestor’s voice, thanking him. Before he knew it the counsellor had bended and held out his hand. /He wants to make friends? Erestor, are you trusting a dangerous animal?/ But he smiled and licked the hand.
Instead of leaving he now followed Erestor inside and remained at his side, settling down beside him in the Hall of Fire. /Did nana remain a bird because of this? Did the spell to return backfire on her as well?/
He rested his head on his legs and sighed. If he was to remain a cat he was best of as Erestor’s pet. He had no skills to survive in the wild.
His head went up with sudden realisation. Days after the incident a bird had flown to him and had remained with him for years afterwards. A blue feathered bird with knowledge shining from the orbs. He now, millennia later, realised it had been his mother.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The twins ran inside and were stunned to see a large cat lay at Erestor’s feet. “Erestor?”
The counsellor stood and smiled warmly. “It saved my life, Elladan. A stray arrow could easily have hit me. But I was too stunned about seeing it happen to realise I should run away. I am no warrior.”
He sighed. “Now Elrond will nag me even more to train.”
He smiled. “I was dragged inside and only when I saw the pillars did I realise I was led away, by him.” He caressed the animals head and tickled it between the ears.
The twins smiled at the picture.
But soon Elrohir frowned. “Where is adar?”
Erestor gasped and jumped up. “By the Valar! Glorfindel!” He ran away, towards where he figured the blond would be.
Glorfindel was indeed coming his way, a determined expression on his face. “This must never happen again. We are fortunate there are no victims.” Erestor grabbed his tunic and fear was in his eyes. It made Glorfindel reach out. “What is it?”
“Elrond. Have you seen him?” He ignored the cat that was pulling his garments. He was too concerned about Elrond.
Glorfindel shook his head and suddenly realised why Erestor was asking. “Damn it. They came from the direction of his walk.” He pried Erestor’s hands away. “Elrohir, Elladan, search the house, I shall track him myself. If he lives, we will find him.” He ran away faster than his feet could carry him.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Erestor went back to the Hall of Fire, where the air was so laden he couldn’t stand it and immediately turned to go to his own rooms.
He frowned when his door was being scratched.
Upon opening it the cat walked inside, looking up at him in anger. Erestor blinked and watched with a bewildered expression as the animal jumped on his couch and made himself comfortable.
He walked to his chair and shook his head.
He stood again and retrieved a plate, which he filled with water. “I can’t let you go thirsty.” He placed it on the side-table and smiled as the animal licked some water. “Don’t get used to this. Animals eat of the ground, you know.”
He felt himself less frustrated as he would have been and knew it was the company. It gave him an outlet he normally didn’t have. He knew he was rambling, but he was glad the cat didn’t interrupt. It didn’t even move, but seemed to listen intently.
And Elrond went from one revelation to the other. In this one night he learned more about his counsellor than he had held for possible.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The next morning came with fear and wariness. Hardly any elf had gone to bed that night and all were showing the effects.
Elrohir was extremely edgy and lashed out at everybody, fearing his father lost forever. Glorfindel hadn’t found him or any trace.
Elladan was off worse. He no longer cared about anything. Celebrían’s departure had already been hard on him, but losing Elrond cut through his heart and he couldn’t handle it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The seneschal sighed. “I don’t understand it. The tracks just vanished. I scanned the entire forest but there’s nothing. No trail, no body, no blood, no nothing. I don’t know what to make of it.”
Erestor sighed. “I do believe he survived. He is still alive, Glorfindel. I know that.” His hand reached out and came to rest on the cat’s head.
Glorfindel snickered. “I think you made a mistake in feeding him, Erestor.”
The counsellor smiled and looked at the creature with fondness. “He seems to have adopted me, aye.”
Glorfindel sighed and helped himself to more tea. “Have you named it already?”
Erestor shook his head. “I don’t know if he’ll stay.” He stood and sighed. “I best start working. Who knows what will happen now.”
Glorfindel watched in bemusement as the cat got to its feet and instantly followed the advisor. /I doubt he will leave you, Erestor./ For a second the animal looked backwards and Glorfindel could swear the eyes carried something familiar, but he quickly dispelled the notion. That was impossible.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Erestor sat behind his desk and sighed. He had to work, for the coming time all work would fall onto his shoulder, but this room only fuelled to remind him of Elrond and the peril the Peredhel might be in. He just couldn’t concentrate on his task. The words seemed to dance before his eyes.
He shook his head. “Come on, Erestor. Get it together. Elrond relies on you to keep Imladris in one piece.”
He sighed and looked at the paper before him. “Right. Road maintenance.” He groaned. He had always hated that. He looked at the cat. “I don’t suppose you know what to do with this one? Suggestions on bridge-ornaments.”
He watched in bemusement as the cat pushed the trash-bin closer.
He laughed. “Throw it away? Surely not.”
But the cat growled and used its claw to hit it from his hand. It landed on the ground and Erestor’s eyes widened as the cat picked it up and neatly deposited it in the basket.
He shook his head. “Amazing.” Only now did he realise he had never found any old suggestions, indicating that Elrond did this a lot. He laughed warmly. “Well, I don’t think Elrond will mind this.”
He grabbed the next paper. “Ai, a letter from Celeborn’s chief healer. Always impossible to read. Elrond was the only one able to decipher it.” He frowned. “I cannot throw it away… Perhaps Glorfindel can manage to read it, but he should concentrate on finding Elrond and supporting the twins.”
His eyes widened when a large green book was placed before him. Reading the cover he smiled. “Elrond keeps them here?” This was new. Where did Elrond keep this book? He had never seen it before. He carefully placed the letter in. He looked at the animal. “You remain here, you show much knowledge how this place works and I have the feeling I have seen your eyes before. But how can this be?” He sighed. /Where’s Elrond when you need him?/ He forced his tears inside and grabbed the animal’s head. “You are staying here, aren’t you? I should name you then.” He smiled. “How about Gelir?” (happiness) He nodded. “Yes, Gelir it is.”
Elrond cocked his head. He was surprised at this name. Why had Erestor picked it? And would the advisor realise who he was? He hoped so, for if anyone was capable of finding a cure, it was him.
Chapter two Things escalate
Erestor picked at his food. He had no real appetite. Things were going wrong, seriously wrong.
Glorfindel entered the room and sat down across him. “I worry for the twins. Elladan especially.”
Erestor nodded. “Still no trace of our lord?”
Glorfindel shook his head. “It’s been two weeks now, Erestor. We have to face the fact that he may never return.” He sneakily threw some meat on the floor for Erestor’s cat.
The counsellor saw and held it back, preventing it from eating the treat. “Pick that up, Glorfindel! He’s getting chubby.”
Glorfindel laughed. “Of course he is. He’s always at your side, you should ride the valley sometimes. The exercise will do him good. And you too.” He smiled. “Maybe the twins would do it for you?”
Erestor’s eyes hardened and he determinedly shook his head. “Nay! They take our their anger on him. I understand their feelings, but I will not allow this.” He stood and walked away, the cat instantly following him.
Glorfindel sighed and shrugged. “Soon we must force them to accept their duties as Elrond’s heirs. How to do that?”
He looked out and watched Elladan sweet talk to yet another victim. Why did the eldest twin have to react like that? Didn’t he have another mourning process?
He walked to the barracks and smiled when he saw Elrohir fire arrow after arrow. “Twenty dead orcs, at least.”
Elrohir turned and managed a small smile. “I am sorry I am not such good company lately. Elladan and I should accept our roles as new lords, shouldn’t we?”
Glorfindel nodded. “Aye. Erestor and Melpomean are doing the best they can, but even they need help, Elrohir.”
The twin sighed. “It’s just that doing so makes it so final. As if we’re telling the Valar we can manage without adar and that we don’t…” His voice choked up and Glorfindel hastened forward, pulling the twin in an embrace.
“Don’t speak like that, Elrohir. They know how we all miss him and how we just barely manage to hold on to our sanity, but for your father we must continue. He wouldn’t want his haven demolished.”
Elrohir nodded and allowed the blond to steer him inside. “I should apologize to Erestor. I’ve been harsh on him.”
Glorfindel smirked. “He understands your pain, Elrohir, for he shares it.” /More than you may ever know./
He sighed. “Did you really yell at his cat?”
Elrohir blushed. “It must have sensed my dark mood and wanted to comfort me.”
Glorfindel cocked his head as they walked inside the corridor. “And why did you react so violently to that?”
Elrohir sighed. “It was exactly what adar would have done and it made me miss him more.” He wiped away his fresh tears and sighed.
Elrohir excused himself from Glorfindel and made his way to the study. It was better to do this now. He nodded to himself and firmly knocked on the door and entered instantly, not waiting for permission.
Erestor looked up and his hand instantly sought out his feline companion.
Elrond licked it but kept his gaze firmly fixed on Elrohir. He could sense the despair and ached to help him, but he knew he couldn’t. Not anymore.
Elrohir saw the feline eyes fixed on his form and felt guilty. “Ehm, Erestor…”
Erestor smiled warmly. “What is it?” His voice was normal and filled with understanding and love.
Elrohir felt his tears come again and he angrily wiped at them as he sat down. “Sometimes it feels like I am drying myself out. How is it possible to keep crying like this?”
Erestor smiled and reached out, cradling the twin’s hand in his own. “Your pain needs a way out, Elrohir. In time you will manage to keep your tears inside and then slowly you will heal.” He smiled. “Do you want to help me?”
Elrohir nodded. “I should. I am the new lord.” He frowned. “With my twin, that is.”
Erestor nodded. “But he is far from ready to take this step. You have always been the strong one, Elrohir.”
The twin blushed at the compliment and he retrieved an apple from his tunic and bend forward, offering it to the animal. “Here, this is for you. I shouldn’t have lashed out at you, Gelir. Erestor is fortunate to have you.” He cocked his head. “You’re getting chubby.” He laughed as the animal seemed to snort. He looked up. “I can exercise him for you, if you want?”
Erestor shook his head. “Did Glorfindel put you up to this?” He laughed. “It is fine by me, but do not hunt him away. He’s good company.”
The cat jumped on Erestor’s lap and the counsellor yelped at the sudden movement.
Elrohir laughed. “I think that’s his way of telling you he likes it with you. I shall take him on a walk.” He stood and pulled the animal along.
When he had reached the meadow Elrohir sat down and signalled for the feline to run around.
But Elrond had other plans. He settled down at Elrohir’s feet and ignored the pushing to force him into moving.
Elrohir sighed and gave up. “How is it possible Erestor has spoiled you in such short time-span?” He snickered. “But I shall not tell him you refused your walk, Gelir. Erestor needs to get out of the study himself and walking you would do the trick.”
He smiled when the animal snuggled closer and demanded attention. “Father would always force my mind away as well. You would have enjoyed each other’s company, Gelir.”
The cat growled and Elrohir laughed. “I shall take that as an agreement. And we shouldn’t dally here too long. I do believe Erestor is in over his head.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Legolas looked grim but didn’t respond to his men’s questions. He too had no idea what he would do once he had found the thieve, but he would not give up his search. He had promised his father to bring the heirlooms back and he would.
If it were up to him the others wouldn’t even be there, but Thranduil had ordered their presence and had told them to protect him and ignore his orders if he demanded solitude.
Legolas shook his head. His father knew him well.
“The trail leads towards those forests.”
A soldier shook his head. “If he keeps up this course we will end up in Imladris.”
They shivered and Legolas growled. “I don’t care. Even Lord Elrond will not stand in our way once he learns our reasons. He and my father may not see eye to eye, they are both honourable elves. We shall not act behind his back.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Erestor yawned and stretched his body. He felt extremely sore in multiple places.
Elrohir smiled and pulled him up from the chair. “You should take a relaxing bath before retiring. I shall have some food send to your room.” He shook his head at Erestor’s apparent disobedience. “And from tomorrow on you are the one to walk your cat. Gelir, can I trust you to make sure this stubborn elf rests?”
When he had rejoined Erestor in the study he had been surprised to see the cat aiding the counsellor but Melpomean had quickly informed him. They believed Elrond might know this animal. It indeed seemed to know a great deal about the realm.
Elrohir smiled and hugged Erestor. “You are important to us all. If you collapse, the realm would too.”
Erestor snorted but remained silent as he felt the cat pull his robes, attempting to drag him along. “I see you managed to get him to obey you.”
Elrohir shook his head. “Nay. I think he has a mind of his own and only obeys those orders that fit him.”
Erestor snickered and nodded. “Perhaps. All right, I am coming, don’t tear the fabric, please.”
He swiftly told Melpomean what needed to be done and then left, stifling another yawn. “He is right. I am tired. Tired and worn out.” He looked at his four-legged friend. “I haven’t even had time to read up on my bastam-knowledge.”
Elrond shook his head and the movement made Erestor laugh.
He opened his door and waited for the other to be inside before closing it. He kneeled and hugged the animal. “You’ve brought so much joy to my life, Gelir.” He sighed. “If only Elrond would return. Then it would be perfect.”
He shook his head and stood before walking to his bathroom. He added some refreshing and healing herbs to the water and sighed contented when he fully declined in the warm and soothing water.
He closed his eyes and ignored the world.
When his eyes fluttered open he realised he had fallen asleep. He also realised he had been more exhausted than he had thought.
A smile graced his features when he saw Gelir stalk closer. “Don’t tell me you are hungry and now consider me a nice prey.” His voice was light and mocking. He yawned and shook his head to get rid of the remnants of sleep. “What time is it?”
Elrond jumped on the rim of the tub and licked Erestor’s forehead. He was concerned about the counsellor. The other hadn’t rested since his disappearance. He had waited for him to return in the adjoining room but after three hours his concern had gotten too much and he had sneaked inside. He now knew why it had taken the other so long to return. Erestor had fallen asleep. /You should pace yourself. Has it always been this bad or is this recent?/
Realising he didn’t know the answer shocked him. What if he had failed to see an ailing elf? What kind of healer had he been?
He suddenly felt filled with self-pity and wanted to lay down and wallow in it. The small rim of the pool wasn’t the most suitable place to do so and he briefly teetered from one side to the other before he lost his balance and landed in the tub with a large fountain as a result.
Emerging, he shook his head and spat out the water.
Erestor laughed and sat up, shaking his head in mirth. “I could swear you did that on purpose.” His amusement made way for disbelief as the cat merely curled itself up on his lap, resting his head on the rim of the pool. The water was still warm and Erestor was now effectively trapped.
Taking advantage of the situation Erestor made some lather. “Glorfindel complained about your smell, meldir.”
Before Elrond was aware of it Erestor was rubbing the lather into his fur.
The expected growl and flight stayed out and Erestor was mildly surprised to see Gelir snuggle closer and close his eyes, allowing this manoeuvre. /Wild animals hardly allow this. And you’ve not acted wild since I’ve seen you for the first time. Did Elrond keep you hidden from us?/
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Glorfindel frowned when Elrohir walked inside. “All right. Half an hour past starting time. Where are Elladan and Erestor?”
Elrohir smiled. “I think Elladan is eating in the village. He left with some comely elf. And Erestor will be fine. Gelir is with him.”
Glorfindel smiled and nodded. “Still, I think I’ll check on him. You can start if you want.”
Elrohir shook his head. “Nay. You waited for me, I shall wait for you.”
Glorfindel hurried through the corridor and ruffled on the door. “Erestor? Are you up? Erestor? It’s dinner time.” He frowned at the strange noises that came from the room and seriously considered breaking open the door.
But then it opened and a flustered Erestor joined him on the corridor. The blond had to jump backwards when Gelir sprang forward. He shook his head as the animal took the lead. “He strides through the place as though he owns it.”
Erestor laughed. “Well, he’s got me and Elrohir wrapped around his finger, so I should say that he does.”
Glorfindel laughed and pulled the advisor close. “I am glad he’s cheering you up, meldir. Makes one less elf for me to worry about.” He sniffed the air. “And dare I think you washed him?”
Erestor nodded and hastily sat down, greeting Elrohir in the process. “Aye, I washed him. He joined me in the tub, though not intentionally.”
At Elrohir’s surprised look he told the twin what happened. “And then he just settled in my lap as if it was the most normal thing. He actually liked being washed.”
Elrohir grinned and smiled at the cat. “If that doesn’t show deep trust, I don’t know what does.”
Glorfindel snickered. “Tell me, where does he sleep?”
Erestor shrugged. “He’s always on the couch when I fall asleep, but he’s on my bed when I wake up. Don’t ask me when he decides to exchange one for the other.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Elladan groaned as he reached consciousness. What the hell had happened? Slowly the darkness made way for dim light and he realised he was in a small room. Wanting to rub his head, for it ached enormously, he realised his hands were tight behind his back. This made him jolt to full awareness and the next thing he became aware of was being completely bound and gagged.
He groaned. /Ro…./ His twin must be so worried. He had no idea where he was and what time or what day it was. But now he knew not to go with complete strangers anymore. He had no choice but to await what would happen. He hoped Glorfindel would swiftly find him.
Chapter three Trouble likes company
Erestor sat up in shock and wondered why he had woken up. But he didn’t have to ponder it for long as he heard the dangerous sounds emanating from his own bed. He swiftly looked at his foot end and saw Gelir ready to strike. His shock grew when he saw a strange soldier with his back to the wall.
“Counsellor, lord Glorfindel told me to get you. Please restrain that thing.”
Erestor shook his head. “It’s a he and he’s a bastam.” He was bemused at his lecture and rubbed the sleep from his eyes. “What time is it? Did you knock?”
The soldier denied it and made himself even smaller.
Erestor yawned and nodded, sitting up. “You can go. Gelir, stop that. He meant no harm. But you are right, he should have knocked.” He grabbed his robes and hastily left, wondering what was wrong.
Glorfindel was already waiting for him, his face grim and filled with anger. It caused Erestor’s heart to speed up in fear.
Glorfindel handed him a letter and Erestor silently read, his eyes widening as he did so. “What? But how?” He shook himself out of his trance. “Does Elrohir know?”
Glorfindel shook his head. “Nay. I fear informing him. He won’t handle this, Erestor.”
The counsellor nodded. He agreed with the blond. “Any trails, information, where did he take Elladan?”
Glorfindel shrugged. “I don’t know. I’ve searched the valley but nobody has seen either him or that strange elf he was with. What do we do?”
Erestor sighed. “Ask for proof he is all right. Make sure he knows that only a whole Elladan will be worth the money. If the twin as so much has a scratch he must not be in doubt about our disagreement to pay this ransom.” Glorfindel widened his eyes but Erestor silenced him. “Of course I want him back as soon as possible, but if we pay without any delay or demands he will ask again and again and again and Elladan’s life will mean nothing to him. We must place the twin’s need first before ours.”
He sighed. “How about a scent-trail? The dogs could follow it.”
Glorfindel shrugged. “It disappeared near the Bruinen. Anything is possible.” He growled. “As if it isn’t bad enough Legolas is coming here.”
Erestor’s widened further. “What?”
Glorfindel nodded. “Aye. He’s requested a meeting with Lord Elrond.” He hung his head. “What do we do?”
Erestor sighed. “You must concentrate on finding Elladan. I shall receive Legolas.”
Erestor dashed through the place to make all the arrangement and hardly noticed Gelir’s absence.
Elrond had abandoned his side when he had learned of Elladan’s peril. He now gave every effort to locate at least a trail, but it was useless. There was nothing to guide him and he went back to Erestor’s side with a bad feeling.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Legolas smiled sadly at Erestor. “I had hoped to speak with Lord Elrond.”
Erestor nodded. “That’s not possible, I am afraid. You will have to settle for me. How may I assist you, young prince?”
Legolas realised this was no disrespect and he swallowed, willing his anger to fade. “A thieve has crossed your borders, counsellor. He stole my father’s heirlooms and I vowed to retrieve them.”
Erestor smiled. “It honours you to announce yourself and your intentions instead of sneaking around. You have our best wishes and feel free to make this house your base camp.”
Legolas shook his head. “Nay, I wish to remain hot on his trail, if you do not mind.”
Erestor shook his head. “Not at all. I can understand completely. Is there anything you need? Refreshments, food, repairs?”
Legolas smiled but shook his head. “Perhaps on the way back, if we’re allowed to make the detour?”
Erestor nodded and inclined his head. “It would be our honour to welcome you properly, Prince of Mirkwood.”
Legolas bowed and continued his way in haste.
It was in that moment that Elrond dashed inside the clearing and he cocked his head at the departure. Had he missed something?
Seeing it Erestor realised the other had abandoned his side and he hadn’t even noticed. He sighed to get rid of the pained feeling that coursed through him. “It’s too bad Legolas is on a mission already. He could have aided us in finding Elladan.” He sank to the ground, glad the animal instantly came closer. “I fear for Elrohir, Gelir. We must keep an eye on him. Perhaps his grandparents should visit?” He snickered when a shudder went through the feline fur and the animal fervently shook his head. “You disagree?” He sat up and smiled warmly. “Perhaps you are right. It will only bring back the pain of losing his mother.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Elrohir smiled when Erestor walked into the study. Gelir instantly leaped forward and jumped on Elrohir’s lap. The twin gasped. “Where did that come from?”
Erestor smiled. “He’s fond of you, Elrohir.”
Elrohir smiled and patted the animal. “Back to the floor with you. You’re Erestor’s pet, if any.” He sighed. “Where’s Elladan? I haven’t seen him since yesterday.”
Erestor swallowed but realised keeping the truth from him would only hurt him more. He placed a hand on Elrohir’s shoulder. “He’s been kidnapped. We don’t know where he is, but we’ll do our best to bring him back in on piece.”
The news stuck Elrohir like a sword and he sank back into the chair, his eyes staring into nothingness.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The days passed by without him knowing it and slowly he turned paler and paler. Nothing they did helped and Erestor gave up on talking to the twin, handing his care over to determined Glorfindel, who had to acknowledge defeat for the second time. There was no trace of Elladan and there hadn’t been a second note. He feared the twin may already be dead.
Miles away Elladan had long ago given up hope on any rescue and thus he ignored the strange sounds that travelled up. It had in fact been the first sounds he’s heard since waking from that sleeping potion, he know realised the other to have slipped in his drink.
But then the sounds got louder and he realised they were real.
This place was under attack. /I can be rescued. Whoever this is must hate them and considering the way I am being held I doubt they’ll see me as an enemy as well. What is it Erestor always says? My enemies enemy is my friend./ So he started trashing, making noise and hoping it was loud enough to attract some attention.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Glorfindel frowned when he saw a lone rider appear from the direction of Lórien. Now what was about to rock their world? He smiled when he saw it was Haldir. That meant there was just another message from Celeborn and Galadriel. Haldir always delivered the family letters and usually lingered. But right now he had no desire to talk to him. Seeing Erestor’s secretary walk past he smiled. “Melpomean! See to Haldir, will you.”
Melpomean hurried down the stairs and reached ground level the second Haldir dismounted.
The warrior smiled and bowed. “Melpomean? Where is everyone?” And why was the air so dense with fear?
Melpomean smiled but didn’t elaborate. It wasn’t his place to tell. “I shall show you your room.”
Haldir sighed. This didn’t look promising. The other was usually tight-lipped and hard to talk to, but now he sensed he should keep his distance even more. And he didn’t want to.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Erestor rested his head on the table and cried his silent tears. He smiled sadly when he felt someone move his arms away. “Not now, Gelir. I’m in no mood to play with you.”
But he relented and eventually he allowed the cat to crawl close to him and settle against him. “I’m just so worried for them. I hope Glorfindel can break through to him.” He smiled at the other. “If we could find him a loyal pet as well it would be perfect.” He rested his head on Gelir’s body. “I know you’ve tried but you were doomed to fail, meldir. Elrohir already considers you mine and he wouldn’t dream of stealing you. Had I known what I know now I would have send him outside with the meat.”
Elrond snickered and playfully tugged at Erestor, already having discovered it made the other smile.
They both looked up when the door opened. “Ehm, excuse me, Erestor, but I have this message to deliver, but it is hard to do so, seeing as everybody is extremely elusive.”
Erestor smiled. “Haldir! Come in! How long will you stay this time?” He nodded when Gelir tapped the military report that lay on the desk. Haldir might be able to aid Glorfindel, giving the blond more time for Elrohir. He motioned for the warrior to sit.
“a lot is wrong, Haldir. Elrond went missing without a trace several weeks ago and now Elladan as well. We fear for Elrohir.”
Haldir’s eyes were filled with horror and shock. Everything now made sense. “My sympathies. Can I do something?” He knew Celeborn and Galadriel wouldn’t mind. “Perhaps my lady can come?”
Erestor shook his head. “Nay, that would not be wise now. But we could use your skills, Haldir. If you take over Glorfindel’s duties or relieve him a bit, he will have more time for Elrohir.”
Haldir nodded and stood. “Consider it done.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Legolas smiled wickedly and nodded. They would attack as soon as the stars were out and they would all attack together. Most citizens were out, celebrating, and Legolas knew they had to use this opportunity to their advantage.
Without words they charged and completely surprised the thieve. He tried to run, but the elves had the place surrounded and were now entering through every opening, completely cutting of his escape.
Legolas trusted the others to keep him covered and went about searching and found many items, amongst them his father’s jewels and he carefully tugged them away. “We shall bring all other stuff to Lord Elrond. Let him deal with finding the rightful owners.”
They were about to leave when they heard noises upstairs. Signalling silence Legolas hastily went upstairs, his daggers in hand. He wasn’t prepared for the sight that greeted him. “By the Valar! Meleor!”
His second in command dashed up and was equally stunned. “We must take him to Imladris. Lord Elrond will heal him.”
Legolas nodded. “We shall have to travel slowly with him. Help me.”
Together they removed the binds and the gag. Seeing the eyes till possess awareness made Legolas smile. “Mae govannan. Ni Legolas.” (well met, I’m Legolas) He smiled when the other passed out after smiling gratefully and with trust in his eyes. He ignored the funny feeling inside his stomach and concentrated on lifting him, shocked at how little weight he had to carry.
Meleor growled. “These bounds have been on him for quite some time. He’s malnourished and maybe even ill.”
Legolas nodded and placed his cloak around the frame. “The sooner we are gone, the better. To our campsite.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Erestor sighed and sat down on the bench. The melancholy was starting to get to him as well. He realised that right now the only thing that kept him going, in fact kept him sane, was Gelir. Tears left his eyes and he let them go. Why should he not weep?
Elrond would have been shocked to see him cry a month ago but no longer. Not after all he had learned about the counsellor. And it had only made him love him more. He jumped on the bench and pounced on him, licking away his tears. /You taste great, but I doubt I’ll ever be able to say those words aloud./
Erestor laughed as the raspy tongue tickled his face and he pulled the animal closer. “Ai, Gelir, you are the only joy I have left.” He blinked when he saw the orbs darken and imagined to see shock. He sighed. “But I shouldn’t dwell on my pains when everybody needs me.” He stood and carried the animal, needing the contact. “Please don’t leave me?”
Elrond would have given everything to assure Erestor and, while he was at it, talk some sense into the elf. Right before speaking his love.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Legolas wrung out the cloth and wiped away the last dirt from the unconscious face. “At least he isn’t injured.”
But Meleor didn’t share his optimism. “Legolas, the bounds have been on him for quite some time. The blood circulation is only slowly restoring.”
The prince looked at him. “Is that why you are massaging his ankles?”
Meleor nodded. “It will help, yes. I doubt he can walk soon, though. He may as well be injured for the assistance he will need at any rate.” He smiled when he felt the other stir. “He’s coming round. How’s the tea coming? And the food?” A soldier handed him the needed items and returned to the fire.
Argh. Where was he? What had happened? /Air, I smell air. And wind. I am outside./ His memory came back and he opened his eyes, trying to find some answers.
Legolas smiled when the questioning orbs settled on him. “Take it easy. You will have sore ankles and wrists for some time to come, but massaging the areas will help. We’ve prepared some food and healing tea for you, but I doubt you can manage alone.”
Elladan smiled and realised the other was right. He could hardly move his limbs. “And you are?” At least his speech wasn’t impaired.
Legolas had the grace to blush. “Ai, forgive me. That’s highly inconsiderate of me. My name is Legolas and this here is Meleor.”
Meleor seized the opportunity to learn something about this strange elf. “You were lucky we came to retrieve some stolen items.”
Elladan cocked his head and Legolas smiled. This one was extremely sensitive and didn’t miss much, not even in this state. “Some stolen heirlooms and I promised adar I’d retrieve them.”
Elladan nodded. “He invited me for a drink and when I woke up I was there. I don’t know how many days went by before you came.” His voice was hoarse but he knew it would become better soon.
He allowed Legolas to manhandle him so he could be fed and eagerly ate and drank his fill. “Where are we?”
Meleor smiled. “Some miles west of Gadion.”
Elladan widened his eyes. “Gadion? But that’s hundredth miles south of Imladris!”
Legolas nodded. “Aye. We will take you there; Lord Elrond is a gifted healer.”
Hearing those words Elladan remembered his father’s possible death and the pain came back. Since his muscles were either sore or otherwise uncontrollable he couldn’t prevent his tears from falling.
Meleor frowned when he saw it. /He strikes me as a strong warrior. Why would he weep?/
Legolas felt the change and the shocking body. He immediately tightened his hold and rocked his charge in what he hoped was a comforting motion.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Erestor stopped walking when he saw Elrohir staring in the distance. The signs had become stronger. “We cannot lose him.” He sighed, making up his mind. “Glorfindel must act now if we are to keep him here. But he’ll never listen to me.” He frowned when he heard a growl and watched in bemusement as he saw Gelir run away.
But before turning the corridor the animal looked over his shoulder and seemed to beckon him.
Erestor shrugged and ran after him.
He was surprised to see the animal enter Glorfindel’s private rooms and he heard the scream as a result. He entered and couldn’t help but laugh as he saw Glorfindel use a chair to keep distance between the animal and himself. “I am sorry, Erestor, but right now he looks extremely dangerous and I like my life.”
Erestor smiled and understood. “It seems Gelir wants to aid me.”
He sat down. “Elrohir is fading, Glorfindel, and you cannot wait any longer.” Glorfindel glared at him and Erestor shuddered. In response he saw Gelir use the bed to come behind Glorfindel before swinging his claw at him, effectively tearing the fabric.
Glorfindel yelped and twirled round, backing up to the desk. “Some protector you have. But why do you think I can do anything to prevent it?”
Erestor growled. “Because you love him! Your love can keep him here.”
Glorfindel shook his head. “Nay, Erestor. He’d have to love me in order for that to work. It won’t matter and I have no desire to join him.” He jumped on his desk and looked at Erestor. “Do something. I’m about to become shish kebab.”
Just as suddenly the animal ran out and both elves blinked at the gaping hole of the door. Elrond had realised how to make Glorfindel understand. He knew which book to get and ignored the screams as he dashed through the corridors. By now everybody knew he belonged to Erestor so no one would dare attack him.
He jumped towards the right shelve and grabbed the book. He sighed. /Oh, well, holes it is. No way I can use my tail to carry it./
He went back just as swiftly and jumped on the desk, which catapulted the careful seneschal to the wardrobe.
Erestor reached out and grabbed the book. “Why did he get this? What’s going on?” But then his eyes widened in realisation. It was from Elrond’s personal library, a record on fading.
He opened it and flipped through the pages till he reached the right page. “Here, you stubborn mule, read this!”
Glorfindel shuffled closer, keeping the cat in his vision, not trusting it at this point. He dropped the book as soon as he read the text. “I did not know.” He yelped when he was pushed towards the door, but he saw Erestor still sitting on his chair.
The counsellor smiled. “He’s right, you should go to Elrohir. Keep him with us, Glorfindel.” The blond nodded and left.
Chapter four On the path to recovery
Legolas carefully lowered Elladan on the grass and smiled warmly. “Feeling better?” Ever since the other had stopped crying he had been silent and he didn’t expect a response and therefore was surprised when he heard the other speak as soon as Legolas started the massage on his wrist.
“There was a breach in the security a while ago and adar disappeared that night. Glorfindel cannot find him. It hadn’t fully come out yet.”
Legolas gasped and stopped all motion. “And now you’ve disappeared. Your mother must be worried.”
Elladan smiled sadly. “She sailed long ago. Just my brother left. I hope he can cope.” His eyes became determined. “I want to return as soon as possible.”
Legolas nodded. “I understand. We’ll travel as swift as we can without adding to your injuries. But it will still take several days before we reach Imladris and a messenger can be dispatched.” His eyes widened. “I could send someone ahead, inform them we’re coming. You could write a small note to ease your brother’s mind.”
Elladan nodded but then his look fell. “How, I cannot even hold anything yet, let alone lift it to write.” He sighed and closed his eyes.
But then he smiled. “Heirlooms….” He nodded. “Take the necklace. My father had it made when I reached maturity. It’s unique.”
Legolas unclasped it and signalled for Meleor to approach. “Someone needs to ride ahead and inform Lord Elrond we’re coming and bringing a healing elf. This is his necklace and should go to his brother as a mind-stiller.”
Meleor nodded and returned to the camp. He would take care of it. This not only called for a skilled rider and warrior, but also a diplomat.
Legolas redirected his attention to Elladan and the massages. “I wish there was more I could do.”
Elladan smiled. He didn’t mind being handicapped with this one looking after him.
They looked up when a soldier coughed for attention. “Excuse the intrusion, my lord, but we’ve spotted a hot stream nearby. It will mean adding half a day to the journey, but it might aid him.”
Elladan nodded. “Aye, the warmth will do my muscles a lot of good.”
Legolas shrugged. “Then we go there. Thank you.” He sat up and looked at the sky. “Any cabins nearby as well?”
Elladan frowned and looked at the passing clouds as well. He smiled. “It looks like we will have to skip the stream if we are to reach the cabin on time. There’s one on half a day’s ride from here.”
Legolas cocked his head. “Which means tomorrow we can get there before dark after going to the stream.”
But Elladan shook his head. “Nay. That storm will be here before that. The air travels swiftly around Imladris.”
Legolas sighed but took his word for it. “Very well. It’s a pity. Perhaps we’ll pass another.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Elrohir was startled when he felt someone lift him. The hope was crushed when he saw the golden strands. “Glorfindel.” His voice was soft but filled with accusation.
The blond ignored it and carried him to his own rooms, hoping Erestor and his pet-cat had gone. “Stop this, Ro. We’ll find him back, I promise. And what you need right now is a nice, long and warm bath. And then some cupcakes.”
He kicked his door open and smirked when he noticed the counsellor had tidied it. Feeling the twin’s curious look on him he shrugged. “Erestor visited and it looks like he did some cleaning.”
The warm bath revived Elrohir and he watched as Glorfindel busied himself. He grinned at the decorations. “I’ve never seen a purple bathroom.”
Glorfindel grinned. “Is that so? I have you know it is like this because of you, Elrohir. I was a beautiful blue but when you were six you decided it needed to change.” He shook his head. “It never came out.” He grinned. “And according to the painters the only colour that will stick is black. And I am not having a black bathroom!”
He smiled when a servant knocked, delivering the food.
He swiftly returned and fanned some towels before the young Peredhel. “Out you go. The water must be cold by now.” He fussed over him and soon had him nice and dry, sitting on his bed with the dinner. “Eat, Elrohir.”
Even though the twin felt no hunger what so ever the blond’s tactics ensured he ate almost everything.
When Elrohir was done he removed the tray and searched for a board game. He knew he had one, but where?
He looked up in wonder when he heard scraping at his door. “Now what?”
He opened the door but wasn’t prepared for the dash of fur that passed him by and he fell to the ground.
Seeing Gelir’s actions force Glorfindel to land on his butt made Elrohir laugh. “Where’s Erestor?” He snickered as the cat curled up, pretending to sleep. “He’s asleep?” Before he knew it the animal was over him, licking him, the raspy tongue making him laugh.
Glorfindel scrambled of off the floor and watched as the twin rolled around on the bed.
But after some minutes he grabbed the animal and placed it on the floor. “That’s enough.”
Elrohir sat up, his eyes shining with temporal happiness. “Findy is right, Erestor will wake up.” He sighed. “I should go to my bed.”
Glorfindel shook his head. “You’re not going anywhere. You’re staying right here. I’ll look after you.”
Elrohir narrowed his eyes but they widened in bemusement when he heard a growl from the corridor.
Glorfindel looked over his shoulder, growling as well. “You mind your own business.” He shook his head and settled on the bed. “Now might not be the best time to say this, Elrohir, but I greatly care about you.”
Elrohir managed a smile. “I know. Erestor does too, and I care too, but…” He sighed sadly. “I just can’t help it. Adar didn’t come back and now Dan, I…”
Glorfindel gently shook him and smiled. “I’d rather keep it to myself, but Erestor will unleash his cat at me if I don’t.” Now he had Elrohir’s attention and he smiled warmly, caressing his face. “I love you.”
Elrohir grinned. “Dito, Findy.” He yawned. “I should go now.”
Glorfindel shook his head. “That’s not what I meant. I meant… O damn it.” He ignored everything and leaned in closer, gently kissing Elrohir with a fleeting kiss.
The twin gasped and pulled back, but the sensation demanded to be felt and confused him. Glorfindel had just kissed him, as a lover, not as a friend. But what did that mean? For him?
Glorfindel smiled and pulled Elrohir down. “Give it time, Elrohir, but please don’t make any rash decisions for you’d break my heart if you do.” He planted another swift kiss on those tempting lips and smiled. “We should sleep.”
Elrohir didn’t get a chance to ask his questions for every time he made a sound Glorfindel shushed him.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Legolas smiled when he saw the cabin’s interior.
Meleor shook his head when he saw the Prince’s smirk and stubborn look. He dismounted and aided him in getting their sleeping charge on the bed. “We’ll start a fire and…” He stopped speaking when he saw what had triggered Legolas’ smile and grinned. “And we’ll boil some water.” He arranged everything while Legolas started the now normal massages. He would rather have stayed close, but knew he couldn’t. He just hoped the strange elf would welcome the Prince’s interest in him.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Elladan woke to the smell of warm meat and he instantly tried sitting up, groaning as his muscles strongly protested and instantly made him abandon the action. He closed his eyes as the severe pain sliced through his body.
He smiled when he heard the now familiar voice speak to him and he opened his eyes. Instantly he became worried. “Why are you smirking?” He shook his head at the innocent look that now passed over the other. “It always means trouble and I doubt you are an exception. Ai, my ankles.”
Legolas instantly moved his attention towards the pained areas and Elladan smiled grateful.
Legolas shrugged. “Look to your right and you’ll find out.”
Elladan frowned but complied, grinning when he saw the tub. “That I didn’t know.”
He blushed when his stomach growled.
Legolas smiled warmly. “Time for dinner. And while we eat my men will fill your bath.”
Elladan cocked his head. /Your men? I already knew you control them, but in which capacity are you their leader?/
Legolas smiled as he read the question in his eyes. “You are slowly regaining your strength. As soon as we reach the border we shall not rest anymore. The sooner I have you in Lord Elrond’s hands, the better it is.” He flew forward when the other struggled to sit. “Nay, lay down. You need to give it time.”
Elladan ignored it and growled when he couldn’t grab hold of Legolas’ tunic. “Have you seen him? Is he all right?”
Meleor, who had instantly responded to Legolas’ cry for help, pressed the Peredhel back on the bed and frowned. /Why does he ask after Lord Elrond?/
Legolas shook his head. “We’ve passed through Imladris not long ago and I felt it only proper to let Lord Elrond know. I haven’t seen him though. Counsellor Erestor told me he was indisposed at the time. I suspect he was healing someone.”
Elladan didn’t know what to think. He knew the other told him the truth but he didn’t know whether Erestor had told the truth or had given a ruse. “When? When did you pass my realm?”
Legolas smiled and told him.
Elladan nodded, sure now. It had been a ruse. With that knowledge came the crushing truth: his father hadn’t returned and was most likely dead. He averted his head to stop them from seeing his tears.
Meleor frowned. “Why did you ask? And why does our answer displease you? Who are you?” He shrugged when Legolas glared at him.
The blond prince moved to hold Elladan close and he wiped away his fresh tears. “Ignore him.”
Elladan smiled. “Don’t you know then? Who I am?”
Legolas shook his head. “We are unfamiliar with Elrond’s realm and his subjects. This is the first time we’ve come this way.”
Elladan nodded and opened his mouth but Meleor interrupted. “The water is ready. We should get you in now. Hopefully it will help.”
Suddenly the twin felt extremely shy and prudish, not whishing to be naked in front of everyone.
Legolas nodded and looked up. “I can manage alone. Grant him some privacy.”
The soldiers understood and left the cabin. They would use the time to scout the area.
Now that they were alone Legolas gently removed the dirty clothes and just as gently lowered Elladan into the tub. The twin sighed at the blissful sensation. “I can leave you now if you want, but I’ve got some shampoo with me.”
Elladan smirked. “Please, if you don’t mind?”
Legolas shook his head. He didn’t mind a bit. He kept the other occupied by talking about his home and father.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Elrond yawned, but he was too concerned to sleep. Elladan missing and Elrohir near fading. He hoped Glorfindel would succeed. And then there was Erestor, who had so much pain that he kept hidden. But now that he knew he would no longer hide his sentiments.
Elrond snuffed. What use was that decision if he remained a cat?
He startled when Erestor pulled him close. “Now when do you make your way into my bed? Come here you. It is nice feeling a breathing and warm something besides you in bed.”
Elrond couldn’t agree more and snuggled close. He would have loved to enfold the other in a protective hug, but that was impossible. He growled when there was a knock on the door.
Erestor sat up. “What is it?”
“I am sorry, counsellor, but one of the border guards demands a meeting.”
Erestor sighed and struggled out of bed. “I’ll be right there. Give me a minute.” He threw on his outer robes and hurriedly left.
He coughed to announce his presence to the guard.
The soldier smiled ruefully. “I am sorry to have woken you, counsellor Erestor. One of Mirkwood’s soldiers that accompanied the Prince is seen returning at great speed.”
Erestor frowned. “How soon do you expect him to arrive here? And is he injured?”
The soldier shook his head. “Nay. That’s why I was send to inform you, my lord. The commander doesn’t know what to make of it. And he’ll arrive here sometime during tomorrow, the hour after noon, if he doesn’t slow down.”
Erestor frowned, wondering what could be wrong. It was possible Legolas had encountered trouble and that this soldier was sent to request aid, either medical or military. He nodded. “I shall be ready to see him.”
He didn’t go back to bed but decided to make an early start with today’s workload.
Elrond didn’t approve but knew any attempts to stop Erestor would be futile. Every time he had tried the counsellor had shoved him out the room, seemingly uncaring of the dangerous claws and fangs he now possessed. So instead Elrond jumped on the other’s lap, so that even Erestor had to slow down his speed.
The counsellor smiled and caressed his fur. “You’re becoming a real house-cat, Gelir. All your brethren are ferocious killing machines and sneaky stalkers and here you are, being my shadowy pet.”
Elrond purred at the feeling of Erestor’s hand and turned on his back, showing Erestor his stomach, hopefully luring the other to deepen the play.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Elladan yawned and stretched as good as he could and smiled when he realised he had regained his mobility, but he wouldn’t show it yet.
Legolas smiled as well. “The warm water did help. I was thinking we could stay here and repeat it.”
But Elladan shook his head. “Nay. I want to go home. They are worried sick about me.” He started shivering again and Legolas looked around for more blankets to cover him in.
Finding none he shrugged and spooned behind him, pulling him close and heating him with his own body. “Healing elves feel the cold, don’t they?”
Elladan nodded. “Being Half-Elven doesn’t exactly help here.”
Legolas widened his eyes. Half-Elven? But there weren’t that many Peredhil. And he had definitely not heard of any others than Elrond and his family residing in Imladris.
Hearing Meleor walk inside he looked over his shoulder. “When can we continue?”
Meleor shrugged. “The rain is at its worst now. A couple of hours I think. How is he?”
Legolas shrugged. “Improving. He said he’s a Peredhel, but how can that be?”
Meleor’s eyes widened and then the captain’s look became one of horror. “But that means Lord Elrond is missing.” Legolas frowned but Meleor nodded. “The only Peredhil in Imladris are Elrond and his twin-sons Elrohir and Elladan.”
Legolas gasped. “He said his name is Elladan. Oh, by the Valar, Lord Elrond!”
Meleor nodded. “We must make haste. His twin must be insane with worry by now.”
Legolas nodded. “No more unnecessary rests.” He looked at the elf in his arms with a different view. /You are Imladris’ new ruler. Can there be more behind your kidnapping?/ He laughed to himself. /I’ve fallen for Elrond’s heir. Who would have thought?/
Chapter five Changes
Erestor woke up and belatedly realised he had fallen asleep. Hearing tisking noises he looked up and stared into Elrohir’s and Glorfindel’s concerned faces.
The blond approached and sat down on the desk. “Don’t tell me you haven’t seen your bed this night?” He looked at the cat on Erestor’s lap with reproach. “I thought I did not have to worry about him because you are here?” He shook his head. “What am I doing? Talking to a cat!”
Elrohir grinned and approached as well. “How are you doing, Erestor?”
The counsellor stretched. “I’m a bit stiff.” He sighed. “A Mirkwood soldier is on his way here. I don’t know what to expect. Legolas may have run into difficulty.”
Glorfindel nodded. “I shall personally hear what he has to say.” He reached out and pulled the advisor to his feet. “And now we go outside. The three of us need fresh air.” He laughed at the funny sight as Gelir tumbled down to the floor and had to roll around before standing again.
Erestor’s laugh filled the room. “Don’t look at me like that. Glorfindel hauled me up.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Together they walked outside but when they got there they could see the Mirkwood soldier speeding towards them and decided to wait for him.
The soldier altered course accordingly and dismounted into a deep bow. “Forgive the speed, but Lord Elrond’s skill is needed.”
Erestor gasped. “You encountered trouble then?”
The soldier shook his head. “Nay, Lord counsellor. We found the thieve and took back our belongings. We found more stolen goods in his possession and have taken it with us. Some items are undoubtedly stolen from this realm.”
Glorfindel growled, wishing the other came to the point.
Suddenly the soldier’s scream rode the air as he found himself pinned beneath a large mountain-cat, which barred its teeth dangerously. He briefly wondered how it got here, but then merely feared for his life.
Erestor dashed forward. “Gelir, what are you doing? Let him go!”
The soldier’s surprise mounted as he realised this obviously was a pet cat. “How is it possible to have a bastam as a pet? Impossible.”
Glorfindel growled and advanced. “Get to the point already!” But then his eyes widened and he reached down. “I think I know what prompted the attack. Where did you get this?”
The soldier smiled, though fear was still coming from him in waves. “We found a prisoner in their house and are bringing him here.”
Glorfindel’s eyes lit up in hope and Erestor kneeled beside them. “Tell us more.”
“He was bound and gagged and obviously kept that way for a long time. That necklace is his. I was told to make sure his brother receives it, to assure him he is alright and coming back.” He yelped when the animal growled at him.
Erestor narrowed his eyes. “You said healing skills were needed, why?”
The soldier pointed to the necklace. “For him. He’s been kept bound and gagged in a dark room for days on end. You fill in the blanks!” He yelped again when the animal’s mouth snapped close just above his nose.
Elrond jumped away from him and into the direction of the healing house.
Erestor nodded. “Aye. We should prepare. Elrohir, do you hear that? Your twin is in safety.”
Elrohir cried his tears and flung himself at Glorfindel, who instantly embraced him tightly.
The seasoned warrior looked at the messenger, who scrambled up. “Did you take his kidnappers?”
The soldier shook his head. “Nay. That wasn’t possible. We had to wait until the man was alone before we could enter the house.”
Glorfindel narrowed his eyes. “And where precisely was that house located?”
“Gadion.”
Erestor gasped and even he jumped up in fright at the dangerous growl Gelir produced.
Glorfindel’s eyes had narrowed dangerously. “We shall teach them how to treat elves. This is an act of war!” He turned and marched away.
Erestor grabbed Elrohir’s upper arm. “Go after him. Stop him! This needs to be carefully planned. And remind him Elladan comes first now.”
Elrohir nodded and dashed off.
Erestor signalled a servant closer. “Bring this soldier to a room where he can refresh himself.” He looked at the warrior. “I shall prepare everything, but we will need your guidance.”
The soldier nodded. “I shall bring your healers to him.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Elrohir was glad he had so easily talked sense into the blond. Now he wanted to get some answers. He couldn’t be mistaken. It had to be. But he kept it to himself, knowing Glorfindel would never understand.
He ran through the corridors and smiled when he located Erestor and Gelir. /It has to be./ “Erestor, can I join the party?”
Erestor nodded. “I was waiting for you to ask, Elrohir. Go prepare your horse.”
Elrohir nodded. “Can I borrow Gelir for a moment?” He didn’t wait for an answer but pulled the animal along, which bemused Elrond, since the twin had kept his distance so far.
Once they had reached solitude Elrohir sat down and stared into the eyes.
There was knowledge in his orbs and it unnerved Elrond, but he only cocked his head.
Elrohir sighed. /I am not going to make myself ridiculous, for this is the only explanation./ “Elladan’s necklace is identical to mine.” Seeing the feline eyes narrow Elrohir knew he was right. “Save for one detail. And besides the two of us only our father can point it out.”
He stilled and bit his lip, suddenly unsure. “Adar?”
Elrond blinked. That was not what he had expected. But he smiled and nodded, licking his son. He yelped when Elrohir suddenly buried him in a tight hug.
“We didn’t know. What happened? How’s this possible? Is there a way to undo this?” He laughed hysterically. “No wonder Findy didn’t find your tracks.” He sat back when he realised his was crushing his father and he blushed.
Elrond licked him again, unable to speak his words.
Suddenly he jumped up and pulled Elrohir along by tugging his robes.
Elrohir followed. “I have to change, adar, I am going to ride out and meet Elladan. He’ll never believe me when I tell him this.” He frowned when Elrond dragged into his private library and jumped on the chair.
The twin cocked his head. “Do you want me to pick a book?” A nod and he looked around. How to find out which one without pointing to all of them? Suddenly he smiled. “All right. Fast way. I’ll count the shelves from the bottom. Which one?”
Elrond instantly understood and tapped his leg ten times.
Elrohir counted and made his hand follow. “All right, do I go left or right?” He heard one tab and figured it meant left. “Let me know when I’m there.” His hand flew across the covers and suddenly Elrond tapped again and Elrohir stilled his hand, reading out the title.
He smiled when he saw his father nod.
He picked it from the shelve and opened it.
Elrond immediately jumped up and wanted to flip the pages.
Elrohir laughed and pushed him away. “Let me do this. You’ll ruin the book.” He placed the volume on the ground and started flipping. Suddenly he stopped and read the part that intrigued him. /Should the reversal spell not work, then unhappiness is the cause. Alter the base for this unhappiness and the change will occur./
Elrohir was puzzled. His father was unhappy? The only thing he could come up with was love. /Nana sailed many centuries ago and adar loves…/ His eyes widened as he realised the truth and he laughed warmly. “That’s it. Oh, adar. I am so happy for you.” He placed the book back, ignoring Elrond’s disapproval and left, leaving his father in a puzzled mood.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Haldir yawned and stretched. He placed his report on Melpomean’s desk and left. It was a good thing he was so busy, but he felt sad he saw the house so little. But it needed to be done and he would not deny Elrohir the comfort and strength he got from Glorfindel’s presence. If that meant he himself would have to do extra shifts than he would.
But for now he was glad he could catch some hours of sleep.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Erestor frowned when the door to his study flung open and Elrohir dashed inside. “We’re leaving. It’ll take some days before we return.”
He placed his hands on both sides of the counsellor’s head, making sure he had his undivided attention. “Erestor, I had forgotten it but when adar disappeared you were hurt in heart as well. But you cannot bottle it up. Why don’t you tell Gelir what’s really wrong? He won’t question it, like we might.”
Erestor widened his eyes. This wasn’t possible. The twin couldn’t know.
But Elrohir smirked and nodded. “I expect to see some changes when I am back.”
Erestor was stunned. What changes was the twin referring to?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Elrohir smiled when he found everything ready for departure when he arrived at the stables. He swiftly mounted and signalled departure. “Elladan, I am coming.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Legolas’ eyes widened beyond belief when he felt himself yawn. He shook his head to get rid of the spell tiredness was weaving in his head. He did not want to sleep. He had to look after Elladan. And that meant riding until the horses needed the rest, not until he did.
The twin’s hand settled on his own and they both felt the jolt of energy course through their bodies.
Elladan looked over his shoulder and smiled at the blond. “We can afford to rest a while. We’ve passed the borders a while ago. It is safe.” He inhaled the air. “Perhaps I should reconnect to the lands. It’s welcoming me back.”
Meleor nodded. He agreed with the Peredhel and signalled a halt. “Come, let me help you down.”
Elladan cocked his head when he saw the other’s calculating look. He’s seen them enough on Glorfindel to know he should ask.
Meleor smiled at his perceptiveness. “I’m just wondering why the land didn’t warn your people.”
Elladan shrugged, hissing as his muscles gave great protest at the movement. Or rather, as they would have done.
Legolas smiled and dismounted as well. “That’s a good sign, Elladan. You can at least move now.”
Elladan nodded. “Still hurts though. And to answer your question, Meleor. I do believe they’ve tried to reach out but adar has only recently disappeared. We’re all shaken.”
Legolas nodded in understanding. “It didn’t have that same tight connection with you and your twin yet.” He smiled. “It’s the same in my realm. Adar can sense any disturbance, but I cannot. I don’t have the same link.” He laughed. “Did you two have the same trouble hiding? Adar could find me everywhere within ten minutes.”
Elladan laughed. “Nay, but I do believe adar pretended not to know where we were.”
He sighed when Meleor carefully placed him on the familiar soil. Immediately the land reached for him. Suddenly the twin widened his eyes. His talk with Legolas had made him realise something vitally important. /The connection is lacking./
He smiled at Legolas. “You should lay down as well. Shouldn’t he, Meleor?”
The warrior laughed but raised his hands. “I am staying out of this. I like my health, young one.”
Legolas threw him a glare but settled down besides Elladan. “You are right. If I don’t I will only fall of the horse and add to your injuries as well as giving myself one.”
Elladan snickered and rested his head sideways to look at him.
He closed his eyes and reached out. The pattern greeting him was familiar, extremely familiar. /I should have practised it./ Suddenly his eyes flared open in disbelief.
Meleor kneeled and grasped his hand. “What is wrong? Is it your brother?”
Legolas opened his eyes as well and rolled onto his side. “Elladan?” He brushed some strands out of the twin’s face.
Elladan smiled at their care and concern. He shook his head. “I sense adar on the land. But that’s impossible.”
Legolas beamed and pulled him close. “Why would that be impossible? You said he went missing.”
Meleor nodded. “He may have had an accident and now found his way home. Or maybe he still isn’t there but wandering around without a memory? It -has- happened.”
Elladan smiled but shook his head. “Nay. Glorfindel would have found his trail.” He growled, not liking this at all. How could he be sensing his father when the elder Peredhel was most likely dead?
Still, Legolas was determined to look on the bright side. “But don’t you think that if your father is without memory his instincts will kick in? His instinct to hide himself for instance. I know without a doubt not even a tracker of Glorfindel’s magnitude can locate Lord Elrond if he doesn’t want to be found.”
Meleor nodded. “He was a warrior once. Removing your tracks and surviving in the wild becomes ingrained. Elladan, you sense your father and yet there is no trace of him. This is the only logical conclusion.” He stood and looked at the trees ahead of him. “Once we reach your home we will tell them. Your twin must be able to sense it better. It will aid you in finding him.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
With Meleor personally guarding them Legolas and Elladan soon dozed off. As soon as they both were sound asleep they itched closer, Elladan’s face hardly contorting as he moved.
It placed a smirk on the warrior’s face. /Who would have guessed? He’s doing better than we thought. This can only mean he doesn’t want Legolas’ pampering to stop. That’s promising, extremely promising./
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Erestor sighed as he stepped into his bed. He shook his head. “You can share my bed, you know? You climb in during the night at any rate.” Instantly he was covered in fur and he giggled. Especially when the cat sat back and cocked his head at him, as if asking a question.
Erestor sighed again. “I had a disturbing conversation with Elrohir. He went to fetch Elladan and he told me he wanted to see some changes when he returns.” He shook his head, automatically petting the other. “And I have no idea what he’s talking about. He cannot desire me to breakdown.”
Elrond frowned. Breakdown? What on earth was wrong? He crawled closer and gave him a cat-kiss. /Oh, to kiss you for real…/
Erestor smiled. “I thought I had hidden it. But he knows.” Tears gathered in his eyes. “Not that it matters anymore.” He pulled the other close and wept his tears, all his pain now coming out.
Elrond was extremely worried. What was wrong? What precisely did Elrohir know? He longed to aid Erestor, make it better, but he had no idea how to do so.
Erestor realised he should talk, before he would go insane and Elrohir was right. Gelir wouldn’t question him, wouldn’t look down on him. It made sense. “I miss Elrond, Gelir.”
Elrond moaned. He so wanted to tell him he was right here. /Please, don’t cry. Oh, Erestor./
Erestor buried his face in the warm fur. “And he never knew. I never said or did anything. I wish I had.”
Elrond was puzzled. /What? Said what? Erestor, what are you hiding? Would I be able to find Elrohir’s diary tonight? I know he possesses one. Perhaps he wrote his knowledge down./
Erestor’s next words jolted Elrond from one revelation to another. “Not that he would have welcomed it. Why would he? I am a mere counsellor, not a fabled warrior or king. But I love him so much.”
Now that he was confessing the words tumbled from his lips and he told his feline companion everything. How he had always watched from the distance with a yearning to be at his side, how he had fantasized about being in his arms at night, about making love.
Erestor felt relieved now that it was out of his system and his sobs slowly died out. “I’ll be alone forever. You’re all I have, Gelir.” His emotional outburst had been exhausting and Erestor succumbed to the sleep, clinging to his feline friend.
Elrond was shocked. /You love me? Me? Oh, Erestor, I’m so sorry. I should have made a move, but I didn’t think you’d want me. I’m such a fool./ He snuggled closer and after watching Erestor for a while fell in a deep sleep himself.
During the night the transformation finally occurred and Elrond changed back into himself, held tightly by his counsellor. Neither elf woke.
Chapter six you’re back
Glorfindel stared out over the trees, hoping Elrohir and Elladan would safely return soon. He felt uncomfortable, having voiced his love and being so unsure about its returned affections. He had no idea how the twin felt for him. Perhaps Elrohir had forgotten his whole admission?
He jumped in shock when he heard a heart-breaking scream that could have scared a nazghul away. /Erestor!/ He unsheathed his sword and ran towards the origin of the sound: Erestor’s private rooms.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Erestor stirred and awareness returned to his eyes. They widened beyond belief when he saw Elrond’s face in front of him, where he had expected to find Gelir. Thinking he had finally gone mad he tightened his hold, feeling flesh and bones instead of fur.
Realisation dawned: this was really Elrond. But that was impossible and he flared up, screaming in fear. What was happening to him? He stood with his back to his wardrobe, staring wide-eyed at the bed, where Elrond sat up, looking around disorientated.
“Erestor? What’s wrong?”
Now Elrond’s eyes were the ones widening. Had he just heard his own voice? Not spinning, growling or other feline noises?
Seeing Erestor trying to push through the wooden wardrobe door he figured something had really spooked the other and he made to leave the bed. Seeing himself naked he gasped and now realised what had spooked Erestor. It spooked him too.
He yelped and jumped back into the bed. “Erestor! Don’t just stand there, hand me a robe or a towel. I am naked!”
Remarkably enough these words assured Erestor it was really happening. He wasn’t insane. Elrond was really in his bed. He shook his head. /Robe. He wants a robe./ Only now did he realise he had seen Elrond naked for the first time and he moaned as he saw it before him again. The Peredhel had covered himself up with his sheet and Erestor felt sorry the perfect view was gone. He briefly wondered why he hadn’t realised before, but instantly contributed it to his shock.
Elrond shook his head and looked at Erestor, who seemed ready to flee, yet at the same time yearning to jump in the bed with him. That made the Peredhel realise last night’s admission and he groaned, hitting his head. /Unhappiness! Damn it, if Erestor hadn’t loved me back, I would still be…./
He stopped mid-thought as he realised Erestor loved him. His heart thumbed madly and his eyes darkened.
Before he could speak the door burst open and Glorfindel ran inside, swiftly followed by Haldir.
The seneschal stared at Erestor in concern and worry. “Erestor? I thought you were under attack. At the very least I had expected three orcs in here.” He smirked. “Don’t tell me you got drunk last night and don’t remember taking someone with you. That isn’t exactly flattering, you know.” He turned to apologize to Erestor’s bed-partner.
Elrond smiled and could see the precise moment realisation dawned on the seneschal.
The sword clattered to the floor and Glorfindel’s jaw would have done the same had his bone structure allowed it.
Haldir merely looked on in puzzlement before he bowed to Elrond and discretely removed himself. But he was glad Elrond was back. He smirked as he realised the Peredhel had gone to Erestor before all else. Did that mean Galadriel was right? He shook his head. Galadriel was always right.
Hearing the noise Glorfindel’s sword made when it clattered on the floor made Erestor jump up and when he saw Haldir leave he seemed to be fully over his shock, outwardly at least, and he hesitantly approached the bed, still not sure how it was possible Elrond was in it.
The Peredhel smiled. “It’s a long story, meldir, and I will tell you everything later. Now leave us alone.” The last was said to Glorfindel in his usual demanding voice.
Glorfindel left in a daze, going through the same confusing thoughts as Erestor moments before.
Elrond sighed and reached out to pull Erestor closer. “I am the luckiest elf alive.” He grinned at Erestor’s expression and shrugged. “Hmmm, looks like I have to tell you after all. GLORFINDEL!!!!”
A few moments later the door opened and the seneschal rushed back in.
Elrond motioned to the bed. “Sit down. And hand me some water. I am thirsty.” He drank and pulled Erestor closer.
“I was walking the gardens as usual when I sensed danger. I had no change of escape and no means to defend myself, except for one.” He closed his eyes. “I am the descendant of a Maia and that grants me some powers. The more generations go by the less powers we have, but I can shape shift.”
Glorfindel blinked, understanding. “That was you?”
Elrond nodded. “I had to become the fastest creature I knew. But the spell to change me back didn’t work.”
Erestor frowned. “Then how come…” He shook his head. He still didn’t understand what Elrond was talking about.
Glorfindel smiled and threw a pillow at him. “Think, Erestor. Elrond was Gelir!” He snickered. “No wonder you hung around Erestor. I would have made you sleep in the stables.”
Elrond snickered as well. “Not really.”
Glorfindel cocked his head. “Are you saying Erestor’s bed isn’t more comfortable than the stables?” He figured some jokes would lessen the tension he sensed in the air. But after what Erestor had been through this morn he could understand.
Elrond glared at him. “Glorfindel, let me make one thing quite clear. Erestor’s bed would have been far superior at any time. And now leave us.” Glorfindel shrugged and left, but still heard Elrond’s voice. “And be patient with Elrohir.”
Now that they were alone again Elrond focused on Erestor, who still stared at him. Deciding to do away with the confusion he smirked. “We’re a sublime pair of fools, you and I.” He pulled the other closer and without warning kissed him, passionately.
He pulled back and smiled warmly, allowing for his love to show. “I’ve started feeling like this shortly after she sailed, Erestor, but I didn’t think you’d be interested.” He narrowed his eyes. “And just for the record: I love you for what you are and for what you are not. So never tell me I can’t feel like this.”
Erestor goggled at him, still unable to comprehend it was really happening. Not only had Elrond suddenly arrived but now the Peredhel was professing he loved him. It was too much for him.
But Elrond gently pulled him close. “I shall have to look for my robes later. The trees must have hid them.” He cocked his head. “What do we do now, Erestor? Work or stay in bed?” He laughed at Erestor’s panic look. “Don’t worry. We’ll take it slow, if that’s your desire.”
He stretched and sat up. “As I cannot walk these corridors naked, either I shall have to borrow your clothes or you shall have to get mine.”
Erestor finally shook himself out of the confusion and pulled an old robe from his wardrobe.
Elrond frowned when he saw it. “That’s one I’ve never seen on you before.”
Erestor nodded. “It belonged to my brother. He had more bulk then me.” He shrugged. “I never could get rid of it. It’s all I have of him.”
Elrond smiled in sad understanding. “I am sorry. I’ll take good care of them.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Legolas groaned when he was nudged awake and a second later he glared at Meleor.
The warrior smiled. “I believe his twin is approaching.” He cocked his head in the desired direction and Legolas saw what he meant.
He felt confused. Part of him was glad for Elladan and the fact a healer was about to take proper care of him but another part was extremely jealous. Now he had to stop holding Elladan and taking care of him, for surely his twin would do that.
He stood and smiled warmly at the approaching party. “Well met, Lord Elrohir.”
Elrohir jumped off and shook his head. “No need for titles. You saved my twin. You have no idea how grateful I am.”
Legolas smiled sadly. Elrohir was right; he didn’t have the foggiest. Always he had wanted to have brothers and sisters, but he was a single child.
Elrohir kneeled and gently placed his hand on Elladan’s shoulder.
The commotion and sensing the differences made Elladan reach consciousness again and he blinked in confusion when he didn’t see Legolas face. Then he realised it was his twin staring at him and he flared up, pulling him in a tight hug. “Ro! I am so glad to see you!” He pulled back a little and crossed his legs. “I can sense adar.”
While the twins were talking and solely focused on each other Legolas and Meleor shared a confused look. But soon the old warrior smirked. What do you know? It was mutual! He removed himself from the scene.
Chapter seven Returning home
Elladan frowned when Elrohir steered their horses aside from the party. “Ro?” He looked over his shoulder but instantly averted his head when he looked straight into Legolas’ questioning eyes. He felt bad about lying to the blond and knew he had to explain, but he rather didn’t. He closed his eyes and shrugged. “Ro?”
Elrohir smirked. “I just don’t want them to hear us. You are right. Adar is still here. We just never realised. Remember Gelir?”
Elladan laughed and nodded. “Erestor’s cat. Of course. That’s is one strange animal.”
Elrohir nodded. “That’s adar. He can shape shift, and the spell to turn him back didn’t work.” His smirk grew and his eyes glistened.
Elladan cocked his head. “What happened these past days?”
Elrohir shrugged. “Not much. I fell to despair, Glorfindel confessed his love for me, and I hope Erestor will tell adar he loves him for then he shall change back into our ada.”
Elladan blinked and pulled the leads without realising it, his horse immediately obeying and coming to an halt, forcing Elrohir to do the same.
Legolas and Meleor pulled up beside them before halting themselves. “What’s wrong?” The more time passed the more worried they became. Elladan hasn’t spoken to them since his twin arrived and even though they had known to share the twin they hadn’t thought this would happen. And Meleor was worried about the effects it would have on Legolas. If it were up to him he’d knock some sense into the dark-haired elf.
Elladan shook himself out of his trance and goggled at Elrohir. “Glorfindel said what?” He shook his head again, unable to believe the words. “Ro, what are you saying?”
Elrohir looked at him in amazement. “You heard me. Is it really such a shock to hear I started to fade. First nana sails, then adar disappears and then you. It all was too much.”
Elladan growled. “That’s not what I meant, gwanunig. Glorfindel!”
“What about him? He tried to track you down, but…” Another growl silenced him and he looked at his twin in sudden fear. What was wrong with Elladan?
Elladan snorted and narrowed his eyes. “Fine. You don’t want to talk to me. That’s fine. I will see you at home.” Before he could motion his horse to a fast gallop someone pulled his leads and prevented it. Looking back he glared at Meleor.
“I am sorry, but I do not think this is wise. We should stay together.”
Elladan was about to lose his temper but Legolas placed a calming hand on his own. “Elladan, please?” He smiled warmly. “What on Earth were you two talking about?”
Elladan shrugged. “Don’t know. He won’t tell me.”
The Prince looked at Elrohir and cocked his head. “I heard Glorfindel’s name. Is something wrong with him?”
Elrohir shook his head. “Nay.” He wondered what his brother was thinking but suddenly his face lit up, realising he had told his twin without realising it. He laughed. “Oh, Elladan. I am sorry. I hadn’t realised I had spoken it. And aye, he does.” He looked panicked. “We have to go home. O, shit, shit, shit.”
Legolas looked stunned. Those curses were alien to him. Must be Hobbit-curses, since Imladris had dealings with them where his realm hadn’t. “Elrohir?”
Elrohir ignored him and looked pleadingly at his twin. “I have left without answering him. What if he thinks…. I cannot let him think that. We have to go.”
Slowly understanding dawned on Elladan and he was glad. He nodded. “Let us go then. With speed.” He kicked his horse and not even ten elves would have kept his steed back.
Legolas reacted instantly and followed the twins, swiftly followed by the others who had been caught off guard by the movement.
Meleor smiled to himself. It looked like Elladan wasn’t ignoring Legolas on purpose after all. And his Prince did have a calming effect on him. Yes, very promising indeed.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Elrond smiled and coughed to announce his presence before stepping up to the blond. “Give it time, meldir.”
Glorfindel smiled warmly at his lord. “I know, but still…” He moved his hand through his hair in exasperation. “I don’t know.”
Elrond placed a hand on his shoulder, showing his support. “Look, these last weeks have opened my eyes, meldir. For centuries I’ve kept my love silent when I should have spoken. We would have been so happy so long ago.” He smiled warmly. “I have learned to risk it.”
His eyes widened. “Is that a dust cloud?”
Glorfindel nodded, straining his eyes. “I think so. They’re coming home.”
Elrond closed his eyes and focused inwardly, smiling when the land told him what he figured. His eldest was coming home. He dashed downstairs.
Glorfindel smirked; he could already imagine their shocked and disbelieving faces. He ran inside and flung the study open. “Erestor! You have to come watch this.”
The counsellor reluctantly left his study and he glared at the blond. “What?”
Glorfindel beamed. “My, we are snappy today. I already wondered what send Elrond from your side.” He smirked. “The twins are approaching and Elrond is running towards them. Come, I think this will be interesting to watch.” He dragged the counsellor along and together they followed Elrond, who was running towards the trees.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The second he saw his sons Elrond’s tears fell. Elladan was all right.
Elrohir halted his horse; it was all he could do not to fall off. Even though he had expected to see his father again, it surprised him none the less.
Elladan blinked but then sprang into life, rushing towards his father. “Adar!” Elrond effortlessly caught him and held him close, as much for Elladan’s need as for his own. They both wept their happy tears.
Legolas signalled for the others to remain at a distance and give them some time alone. Even though he couldn’t imagine Elrohir’s feelings at finding his brother all right, he could relate to the feelings coursing through their systems right now. He remembered how worried his father had been when he had gone missing when he was ten. He had fallen through a hole and had broken his leg. Waiting in the dark, dirty tunnel for someone to find him had been the worst time of his life and by the time they did he had been reduced to a sobbing, scary and extremely dirty elfling. He had been so afraid he’d refused to be separated from his father for at least a month. Thranduil had been forced to take his son everywhere he went. Legolas shuddered as he remembered.
Elrohir had now joined his father and brother and smiled. “I guess it happened?”
Elrond smirked and nodded. “Aye. I am surprised you did not hear his scream when we woke up.” He pulled back but maintained bodily contact with his eldest, his expert eyes going over him.
Elladan chuckled. “I am well, adar. Honest.” He rested his head on his father’s shoulder, but then gasped and pulled back, having remembered. “Ai, father.” He pulled back and straightened himself. “Father, this is Legolas. He saved me.”
Elrond inclined his head and stepped up to the blond. “In that case you have my eternal gratitude, Prince of Mirkwood.”
Elladan and Elrohir widened their eyes and looked at each other.
Elrond ignored them and motioned for Legolas to join them. “I take it you caught your thieve? Erestor filled me in.”
Legolas nodded. “Aye, we did. I am pleased to see you well, my lord. And I was honoured to be of assistance.”
Elrond smiled and pulled his eldest closer, ignoring the whimpered protests. “Humour me, Elladan.” He focused on Legolas again. “How is your father, Legolas? And Mirkwood? It’s been ages since I’ve seen its splendour.”
This surprised them all. They had had no idea Elrond had been to Mirkwood.
By now Erestor and Glorfindel had reached the party and smiled warmly.
Elrond discretely pushed his youngest into Glorfindel’s direction and extended his arm for Erestor, who blushed at the motion. Elrond smiled. “Would you prepare rooms for Legolas and his men, Erestor? They require rest and are welcome to stay. Tonight we feast.” He would love to kiss him, but Erestor wasn’t ready for public display yet, so he reluctantly held himself back.
Legolas cleared his throat. “Begging your pardon, lord Elrond, but may I enquire when you’ve been in my realm? I don’t remember a visit.”
Elrond smiled warmly. “I would think not. You were only ten. Your father begged me to come and heal your mental wounds.” He snickered. “He loves you that much.”
Legolas cocked his head. “I don’t understand.”
Elrond looked at Legolas intently. “Your father hates me, Legolas. Even more so than he does those spiders that infest your realm. But for you he set it aside and asked my aid.” He smiled. “And I grabbed the opportunity with both my hands. Ever since there’s been a fragile peace between our lands. But come, enough of that.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Erestor sighed in rueful acceptance. Soon Elrond would walk through the doors and demand an explanation for his strange behaviour; one he didn’t want to give as he hated feeling weak and scared. But he was terrified for the future now. He looked up when the door opened immediately after the warning knock sounded.
Elrond walked inside, smiling widely. “They’re in their old room. I guess they both needed to be together.” He sat down and moved his hand through his hair, creating mayhem to the braids. “I am so happy they are well.”
He raised his eyebrow at Erestor’s snicker. The counsellor blushed and hid it behind his hair, but Elrond knew him well enough by now to see through the shield. Looking over his shoulder in Erestor’s mirror he snickered as well. He shrugged and undid his braids.
“Would you keep a close eye on Elladan and Legolas tonight? I think I spotted some mutual attraction between them.”
Erestor smiled warmly and hoped Elrond was right. “They would be perfect for each other. Did everything go well on his hunt?”
Elrond laughed. “Aye. And we find ourselves with the difficult task of finding the rightful owners back. They found at least thirty stolen jewels.”
He swiftly finished redoing the braids and stood, moving to sit beside Erestor on his bed. “Will you bolt if I kiss you now?”
Erestor blushed deep red and his shocked gaze locked with Elrond’s. He could see the other was serious, but he was afraid to believe the words. He could not rule out Elrond acting on compassion, pretending to love him back. He blinked and stared in disbelief as Elrond closed the distance between them and gently kissed him, taking his time. The Peredhel was an expert kisser and soon had Erestor completely melted against him.
He pulled back and smiled at the elf in his arms. “Give yourself the time to heal, Erestor. We’ve got all the time in the world.” He declined on the bed and pulled Erestor with him. “We’ll have to organize the feast soon, but for now we can relax.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Legolas frowned in annoyance when knocks sounded. He had just prepared for an hour of sleep so he wouldn’t fall asleep during the feast. Maybe if he pretended to be asleep? But no, that would be impolite. Not to mention it forced the servant to make another trip to his room at a later time, which he would not feel comfortable about. He hastily threw the covers away and approached the door, opening it before he could change his mind.
Elladan smiled warmly but his expression fell at seeing the tousled hair. “Oh, I am sorry. I did not realise. Did I wake you?”
Legolas smiled warmly and widened the crack so Elladan could come in. “Nay. I had only reclined.” He was curious what brought the twin here, but was hesitant to ask, lest his attraction showed. But shouldn’t he be with Elrohir?
Elladan sat down and took a deep breath. He had to do this now before he lost his nerve. “I am sorry.”
“You already said that.” The blond’s voice was filled with mirth.
The twin shook his head. “Nay, for lying to you. Pretending I hadn’t regained my mobility yet when in fact I had.” He lowered his head, feeling guilty.
“Why did you do it? Do you think us without honour?” But nay, he was pretty sure he had seen surprise in the eyes of both twins when Elrond had addressed him formally. So that couldn’t be it, could it?
Elladan’s head flared up and fire shone from his eyes. “Nay, never.”
Legolas cocked his head in bemusement. “Than why?”
Elladan inhaled deeply again. This was it. “I don’t know.” Immediately after speaking he shook his head. “Nay, that’s not true. I didn’t want to lose….” O man, how was he going to say this without humiliating himself even more?
Legolas laughed. “You didn’t want me to stop massaging you.” He shook his head.
Elladan nodded, glad with the excuse. And it did come close to the real reason.
Legolas smiled and sat down. “There was no reason to go to such extreme measures, Elladan. All you have to do is ask.”
He pulled his legs close and looked at Elladan from over his knees. “And now that we are being honest, I have an admission to make as well.”
Elladan’s eyes widened and locked with his.
Legolas shrugged. “I was afraid you wouldn’t want to be near me anymore.”
If possible Elladan’s eyes widened further. He opened his mouth but produced only stammered syllables. He shook his head and tried again. “Why would I?”
Legolas smiled, though it lacked conviction. “You had your twin back.”
Elladan shrugged. “It’s not like we’re attached at the hip, Legolas. If the situation was reversed would you abandon me just because your brother had come for you?”
Legolas’ eyes filled with tears. “I don’t have any siblings.”
Elladan’s look was filled with remorse, having seen the pain his innocent question had caused. “Oh.” What could he say to this?
Legolas smiled. “My mother died when she gave birth to what would have been my sister, but the infant was already dead.”
Elladan’s look turned to horror and he scooted closer, enfolding Legolas in a hug. “Ai. I am sorry.” He grinned. “Feel free to borrow my sister on occasions. You’d have to go to Lórien to see her though. And I am pretty sure you’ll give her back within a month.” His grin spread and he pulled back, ignoring the stunned look before him. “And while you’re at it, you can borrow Ro as well.”
Legolas laughed. “Are you saying I now find myself with three make-believe siblings?”
Elladan closed his eyes. “If you want.”
The blond smiled and nodded. “I always wondered what it would be like. Having brothers and sisters.”
Elladan laughed. “Too bad we’re too old for pulling pranks.” His eyes glistened. Maybe, if Elrohir agreed, they weren’t. But did he want to do that to Legolas? He shrugged. The blond wanted to know what it was like and this would definitely ensure him finding out. The times he’s been punished for his siblings misbehaviour were countless. Yes, Legolas would be in for a surprise. He stretched and stood. “I shall see you at the feast then.”
Chapter eight The dance
Elrond leaned back in his chair and smiled, watching his people dance, talk, mingle and basically have fun. He had wasted no efforts for this feast for not only was there enough obvious reasons with both him and Elladan being back, but he wanted to celebrate the hidden ones as well.
He felt overjoyed at finally knowing the truth, finally having Erestor. And then there were Elrohir and Glorfindel; he had no doubt his golden haired friend would succeed shortly and it looked like Elladan had attracted Legolas’ attention. Two reasons why the bridge between the two realms might be finally overcome.
Yes, he was happy.
He moved his hand and placed it on Erestor’s forearm. “Are you happy?”
Erestor nodded and looked at him, still not fully believing it was real. But he was happy to have him back. Looking back at the dancing elves he felt a twing of sadness. How wonderful it must be to twirl around in Elrond’s arms. But he knew, as did everybody, Elrond didn’t dance, preferring to admire the joy from a distance.
So it wasn’t without shock that he saw Elrond standing up. What was he going to do? He swiftly scanned the room, wondering what he’s missed. Were the twin having trouble? Or had someone fainted?
He yelped when he was suddenly hauled to his feet and his surprise and worry mounted when he saw Elrond was responsible.
The Peredhel smiled warmly at him, his gaze filled with love. “These past days have told me how to read you, Erestor. Come, we dance.” He gave his stunned love no chance to protest or walk back as he pulled him close even as he spoke and began dancing. He laughed at seeing the cumulating shock in Erestor’s eyes. “You’ve always stayed by my side, Erestor. The least I can do is give you a few dances.” He shook his head at the calculating look. “Stop trying to understand or figure it out. Just let it happen.” He leaned in close to whisper in his ear, not risking others to hear just yet. “I love you.”
Erestor smiled at those words and did as Elrond suggested. He enjoyed it.
Elladan grinned and hugged his brother from behind. “Don’t they make the perfect couple?”
Elrohir nodded and leaned into the embrace. “I think we shall have to step in more than before, Dan.”
Elladan nodded. “I don’t mind.” He smiled at Glorfindel, but kept his tease inside, knowing his brother wasn’t ready for that yet.
The seneschal smiled. “The Prince looks rather lost, Elladan. You should go to him. You’re his host.”
Elladan snorted. “Adar is the host, but aye, I shall go to him. I don’t want to disturb Erestor’s fun.” He left snickering and his eyes blinked when he saw Elrohir instantly drag the blond to the dance floor. Someone would get sore feet this eve.
As he approached Legolas he could see the joy in the blond’s eyes and felt a little guilty at leaving him to his own devices. “Legolas.”
Legolas was extremely pleased to see a familiar face. These Imladrian elves were extremely fond of feasts and he had already been clamped by several strangers. He felt Elladan’s presence would protect him from that. Feeling an arm on his lower back made him lose hope and he groaned.
Elladan frowned when he heard that, but soon realised what was happening and he pushed the cheeky elf away. “Unless you’ve drank the entire table you can still have some decorum. You shame your realm behaving like that.”
The unfocused eyes settled on him in wonder. Elladan winced as he heard the slurred speech and he motioned two soldiers closer. “Please see Vorndir to an empty guestroom where he can sleep off the alcohol.”
The soldiers shook their head and dragged him along.
Elladan sighed and refocused his attention on Legolas. “You can slap them in the face, you know.” He placed an arm around Legolas. “I guess it is best to show you off as mine. Not even drunk would they dare to piss me off.”
Legolas laughed and allowed it, not really looking forward to more harassment and it gave him the perfect opportunity to flirt with him and find out where he stood without risking anything.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Haldir inhaled deeply after downing his drink in one go. There was no use in stalling any longer. Celeborn had already stated that without reasons to go Haldir would have to go back to his station at the borders and that the delivery days were over. Not that he minded life at the border, but the problem was that it meant never seeing Imladris again and thus -his- face. And that was more than he could bare and the thought alone was enough to make him determined to find out if he had a chance. Even if he got rejected and humiliated tonight, no one would be able to laugh about it at the borders.
“Melpomean.”
The secretary turned and then relaxed visibly when seeing Haldir. “You could scare someone to death, doing a thing like that.”
Haldir smirked. “And there I am fighting the orcs when I could be killing them like this.” His eyes filled with mirth and he grabbed two glasses from a passing tray, immediately handing one to the other elf. “Sukam!” (a toast)
Melpomean’s anger faded as he realised the other had been joking; it hadn’t been a nasty remark at all. He softly touched Haldir’s glass before taking a sip. “Thank you for stepping in.”
Haldir shrugged. “It’s all right. I just hope I haven’t made a mess of Glorfindel’s system. Good thing I am supposed to return tomorrow. Not even he is liable to hunt me to another realm.”
Melpomean widened his eyes in shock but soon had himself under control again. Should he ask? Looking around he saw Erestor dancing with Elrond and Glorfindel suffering yet another dance with the younger twin and he was loathe to disturb them. But how could he ask it and remain polite and diplomatic?
Haldir had now cocked his head, contemplating whether or not he was boring the other.
Melpomean turned to him again and smiled sadly. “Lord Celeborn must miss your skills.”
Now Haldir was truly worried. Did this imply he should go as soon as possible and thus leave the secretary’s sight? He inwardly growled. Why did he hope at all? He shrugged. “No more than usual.”
Melpomean nodded. “Could he spare you a little longer?” Seeing Haldir spit out the just consumed liquid, he frowned. When the green eyes looked at him they carried a emotion Melpomean had never seen before and he found it fascinating. This certainly demanded some thought later. But not now.
Haldir had found himself back and was relieved he managed not to goggle at the secretary, though he did wonder what precisely this meant. Deciding it was safest to take his cue from the other elf he smiled. “That would depend on the reason for my prolonged stay.”
Melpomean nodded, not sure whether to feel sad or angry. Surely Lord Celeborn wouldn’t mind if Haldir took on Glorfindel’s duties a little longer.
Now that Melpomean remained silent Haldir felt his nerves nearly break him and he inhaled deep to try and calm them. “Why are you asking?” Could he really be so lucky?
Melpomean’s lips tightened and he shook his head. If Haldir had no desire to aid them anymore than he wouldn’t stop him for fleeing back. “Never mind, Warden. May Varda protect you on your road.” He bowed and swiftly left the scene. What had he been thinking?
He was unaware he left a thoroughly confused Haldir behind, who did not know what to make of him.
Haldir smiled when he saw Glorfindel and Elrohir walk his way and bowed to show his respect.
Elrohir smiled warmly. “Haldir. We owe you so much.” Without warning he hugged him, stunning the normally level-headed warrior further.
Glorfindel snickered at the shocked eyes, but then his face showed his concern. It wasn’t normal for Haldir to show his emotions so openly. “Is something wrong?”
Haldir shook his head and composed himself. “I don’t know, Glorfindel. I honestly don’t know.” Involuntarily his eyes darted to where he had seen the secretary depart.
Elrohir smiled, looking expectantly at the blond. “Would you mind awfully to take Glorfindel’s job a little longer? Please?”
Haldir’s head snapped at him at alarming rate and Elrohir jumped backwards, seeking the safety of Glorfindel’s protection, who smiled fondly at the action. He kept his gaze on Haldir though as he started to explain his need to revenge Elladan. After hearing everything Haldir understood and smiled. “It would be my honour to fill your shoes for some more days, Glorfindel.”
Sadness overwhelmed him as he suddenly realised that this was what Melpomean had meant. There were no personal reasons involved. He sighed. Why would there be?
His behaviour worried Glorfindel, who narrowed his eyes. “Haldir?”
The warrior smiled warmly. “Nothing. I just figured out what Melpomean was talking about.”
Elrohir laughed warmly, hugging Haldir once more. Glorfindel whispered in his ear and he nodded. He would keep Haldir company for a while. To his bemusement he found the warrior expertly steering the conversation towards Melpomean every time. And it wasn’t until Glorfindel fetched him that he realised.

Legolas laughed as Elladan dragged him out the room. “Elladan! Your father!”
Elladan shrugged. “He will just scold me for acting like a child. Come on, brothers get each other into trouble all the time.” He laughed when he saw Legolas’ look changed between joy and horror. “Come, the view from the precipice is best at night time. Or are you cold?”
Legolas smiled warmly at his concern and shook his head. “Nay. It would not be well for me if I were. Do you feel the cold, then?”
Elladan nodded. “Aye. We feel the cold, though it doesn’t affect us if we take care.” He pulled at his cloak. “This fabric is thicker than yours, probably what you would wear in winter, I suppose.”
Legolas felt it and cocked his head. “A bit.” He was learning so much. And he liked spending time with Elladan. His further protests were merely for show and only half-hearted.
But he found the twin hadn’t exaggerated when he told him how wonderful the view was. He stood in silent admiration for what must have been minutes before he realised he wasn’t alone up here. Turning to apologize he saw the twin sitting on the ground, patiently waiting for him to join him in his own time. It made him smile and he plunged down beside him. “There won’t be many things able to compete with this. I am glad you showed me, Elladan.”
Elladan remained silent and merely nodded his approval.
Chapter nine Trouble may be afoot
Erestor looked at Elrond with barely contained surprise. The Peredhel had been acting quite differently from the Elrond he had gotten to know. Elrond unexpectedly reached out and pulled him close, placing a teasing kiss on his nose.
“I never dared tell you how I feel for you, Erestor, for I feared your rejection.”
Erestor’s eyes went wide. “Reject you? How can I?”
Elrond smiled and pressed even closer, adoring to feel him this close. “I did not know you love me just as much, meleth.”
If Elrond hadn’t had such a tight hold on him Erestor would have swayed at hearing that. Now he merely looked at him. Oh, but those lips looked tempting.
Seeing Erestor’s desire and knowing his real need Elrond minutely closed the distance but didn’t close it entirely. He wanted Erestor to do that. And he did albeit a bit hesitant. Elrond eagerly parted first his lips and then his teeth, granting Erestor easy access and allowed him full control. He wanted Erestor to be in control. There was enough time for duelling and rough play when the counsellor was healed in mind. For now he melted in Erestor’s embrace.
When Erestor applied a little pressure Elrond walked backwards until he hit his bed. Instead of breaking the kiss he looked into his lovers eyes and, seeing the raw need in them, his heart fluttered madly and he felt a fire spread throughout his body. He hoped Erestor wouldn’t back out. Feeling Erestor try to move closer still he let himself fall backwards on the bed, pulling Erestor along with him. The startled yelp Erestor released vibrated in their mouths, heightening their pleasure and need.
Overcome by this sudden urge Erestor all but tore the clothes from their bodies. He was achingly hard himself and seeing Elrond in all his glory made him twitch in anticipation. But his rational thought kicked in, telling him he had no experience in this matter, but he knew Elrond did.
The Peredhel was already reaching for the oil on his bed stand, but when he saw Erestor was about to pull back and flee he swiftly turned them around and straddled Erestor. “What is wrong? Do you suddenly fear me? Yourself?”
His eyes showed true desire to understand and Erestor reached out to caress his face. He adored Elrond for his care and concern. “I love you.”
Elrond smiled and leaned into the caress. “And I love you.” He cocked his head. “Is that it? Are you afraid I’ll stop loving you?” His voice sounded disbelieving and Elrond did have trouble believing it, but he now knew Erestor’s mind and therefore knew it was a distinct possibility.
Erestor gasped and shook his head. “Nay. I can see the depth of your love. This isn’t lust. I -can- separate between the two, Elrond.” He snorted but then closed his head. “I have no knowledge on how to continue. I want you but….” He shrugged. “I should read up, I guess.”
Hearing Elrond laugh was the last thing he expected in response and he looked at the other in shock.
Elrond shook his head and stretched atop his love, loving the fact Erestor bucked at little in response. “I’m not all that experienced myself, melme. But aye, I do know what to do. Will you let me show you?” Erestor’s fear was palpable and it surprised Elrond to see him nod. But it also warmed his heart to know just how deep Erestor’s trust in him ran.
Sitting back up he took a good look at Erestor’s member, needing to know whether or not to prepare himself. He smiled deviously and grabbed the oil.
Erestor gasped when he felt the cool liquid flow over his member just before Elrond’s hand rubbed it. “Ai, Elrond.”
Elrond merely smiled and leaned in to deliver a soft kiss on the already weeping head. “I can tell your real need, my love, and I shall make sure you get it.”
Erestor looked at him in surprise before he gasped as he saw Elrond raise himself and position himself above him. His fear only grew. He did not wish to hurt Elrond.
But Elrond caught his gaze and kept it locked.
The ruler slowly lowered himself and hissed as he was breached for the first time in millennia. He had missed this feeling.
Erestor grew rigid, so afraid was he to cause his beloved pain. Why was Elrond doing this?
Elrond eyes, open once more, read the silent questions and the half-elf smiled. “I want you to experience this. I want you to see that there is no pain. I love you.”
Erestor seemed not to understand. Aye, he could see Elrond reasoning, but he couldn’t believe the other felt no pain.
Elrond smiled. “A little discomfort that will go away once we move. And aye, I will be sore tomorrow, but it will be a good pain for it’ll remind me of this feeling. You have no idea how it feels to feel you inside me, Erestor.” He licked his lips and inhaled deep as he felt Erestor’s response to that. He believed Erestor would turn out to be extremely dominant and insatiable once he was over his fear. Just the type of lover he wanted.
He smiled adoringly when Erestor raised his legs so he could lean against them. “Always thinking of me, aren’t you?” He grinned at the blush that came to life through the already flustered features.
Slowly Elrond started a nice rhythm. He didn’t want them to come to soon, but wanted it to last.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Melpomean frowned when his door got ruffled upon. Who would be disturbing his rest? Who would dare? All knew not even Elrond dared wake him.
He flung the door open and glared furiously. “Get lost!” Seeing Haldir jump back made his frown deepen and he suddenly realised he did not yet ponder the enigma that was Haldir. He cocked his head, awaiting the words of apology.
Haldir sighed and smiled. “I’m sorry for waking you, but I dared not go to Elrond or Erestor with this and you are their secretary.” He swiftly looked down but then looked the other straight in the eye. “Orcs have sighted near our border and their numbers are slowly increasing. We cannot rule out a possible attempt at the house. I am going immediately, to see what I can find out, but I also need to be sure preparations are made to face them, should they attack.”
Melpomean’s anger flared up, but this time he didn’t release it at the poor soul that woke him up. He grabbed his armour and marched away, dressing him and dragging Haldir along at the same time.
He knocked and entered the captain’s rooms without hesitation. Both Glorfindel and Elrohir blinked sleepily at him. Melpomean curtly nodded and smiled when he saw realisation set in with Glorfindel, who instantly jumped out bed, reaching for his own weapons.
Melpomean shook his head. “Haldir informed me there are orcs gathering near our borders. We are going to spy on them. You prepare our defence and make sure those that cannot fight are safe.”
Elrohir flared up as well. “Dan has taken Legolas to the precipice. Should I…?”
Melpomean nodded. “That would be best. And would you tell Erestor and your father, pen-neth. He’s not very likely to ride out if you are the one delivering the news.”
Elrohir smirked and nodded. “And I think we can trust Erestor to keep his mind occupied. It is fortunate we have some Mirkwood soldiers on our soil at the moment, though.”
Melpomean turned and marched out, once more dragging Haldir along.
The warrior finally got himself over his multiple shock and pulled back, forcing the secretary to come to a sudden stop. “You can’t be serious!”
Melpomean rolled his eyes and crossed his arms. “You should not go alone.”
Haldir growled softly and considered tying the other down.
Seeing the concern stilled Melpomean’s hateful words and he centred himself. “I have lived through Gondolin, the Last Alliance and the fields of Pelennor. Come now, we shall see what those things are planning.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Elrohir dashed through the corridors and ran inside his father’s room without knocking. This was important. “Adar!” His eyes widened when he saw his father riding Erestor.
Erestor yelped his name and Elrohir jumped up in shock. Oh, this wasn’t good. His father would make him pay for this.
Elrond held a comical expression on his face at hearing his son’s name from Erestor’s lips but when he saw his lover’s attention elsewhere he realised they had company. His head snapped sideways and he was grateful he was already heated, for that prevented his blush from showing. “Out!”
Elrohir’s eyes were glued to the scene. He had known Elrond and Erestor were in love but he hadn’t expected his father to be on the receiving end. How could he enjoy that when he had known extreme joy with Celebrian?
Seeing Elrond about to explode at Elrohir made Erestor reach out and he gently forced his love to face him, making sure Elrohir was out of his side. He kept his gaze locked even as he addressed the twin. “Can it wait, Elrohir? Or go to Glorfindel?”
Elrohir blushed at the mention of the blond’s name and instantly he saw Glorfindel and himself before him instead of the two dark-haired elves.
From the corner of his eye Erestor saw the rising blush and smiled. He could feel Elrond’s anger evaporate a little and one hand stole towards the Peredhel’s member, looking for ways to make him forget completely. “Well?”
Elrond closed his eyes as he felt his lover touch him. It send shivers all over him. Before he knew it he had come and come hard.
Erestor widened his eyes and gasped, not sure what was happening. “Elrond…. What…. Oh my…” Unwillingly he bucked hard, almost sending Elrond of off him and he tightened his hold on his lover as he came deep inside him.
Spent the Peredhel collapsed on top of his lover, hissing when the connection was lost as the movement forced Erestor to leave his body. Erestor reacted by pulling him close and holding him.
Elrohir’s eyes were wide beyond believe and seeing his father climax due to Erestor made him feel weird. He realised he should go. “Eh…Oh… Ehm… wait… I’ll…. It’ll wait… wait…” He dashed out the room and ran outside. He didn’t stop running until he stood before the precipice. He needed his twin right now. /Ooooo, what if I interrupt there too?/ He wasn’t sure he could handle that. “DAN! Elladan!!! Legolas!!! Are you up there?” That would prevent it!
Not soon after two silhouettes came down the path and Elrohir smiled as he saw his twin.
Sensing his upset state Elladan sped up and pulled Elrohir close. “By the Valar, what is wrong?” His anger flared and if he wasn’t holding his twin right now he would march to Glorfindel and demand an explanation.
Seeing Legolas afraid to move closer Elrohir pulled back and wiped at his tears. “Haldir fears an orc-raid might be eminent.”
Legolas now did come closer and his eyes were shocked. How dare anything consider attacking Imladris. He grabbed Elrohir’s shoulder and squished it. “My archers and I will help fight them, Elrohir. They will not succeed.” They’ve faced this problem before and he felt grateful they were here to offer assistance.
Elladan smiled warmly but his soon looked at his twin again. “And now tell me why you are spooked. Orcs never managed to do so. Or is this because of what happened to adar?”
Elrohir blushed and lowered his head, but wasn’t fast enough.
Legolas had seen his look and recognized it. So he had been right! Elrond and Erestor were an item. “Don’t worry about it. They should have locked the door.”
He placed his arm around Elrohir’s shoulder and steered him towards the manor. “Come. Let us retire to a room.” His eyes twinkled and he looked at Elladan. “Do you possess an instrument?”
Elladan frowned but nodded. “Aye. I play the flute and Ro has mastered the harp. Why do you ask?”
Legolas now looked at Elrohir. “If you play the harp I shall sing.”
Elrohir had a mind to protest but he swallowed it inside when he saw Elladan’s hopeful expression. “All right. We look forward to hearing you sing.”
Chapter ten eavesdropping
Haldir was pleased Melpomean moved so soundlessly, for he feared being unable to protect him if things got out of hand. He didn’t think he would survive at all. There were just too many of them. He dared not come closer and strained his hearing to the maximum. Feeling a hand on his shoulder made him gasp and he once more blessed being out of hearing range.
Melpomean moved beside the warden. He understood why they could go no further. But he could not try and read their lips if Haldir’s torso was blocking his view.
After some minutes he knew enough and motioned for Haldir to follow him back.
The warrior nodded and silently followed him through the trees.
Once they were sure none of the foul creatures could detect it they jumped down and both released relieved sighs. Haldir never liked these missions, but they had to be done. “Well, at least we know that it is going to happen. They’re too many of them to be a rampage.”
Melpomean nodded. “Aye. They are planning to attack in three days time. At this border. But I thought I also saw them talking about the other border.” He shook his head. “I do not like it. Are they planning to attack us at two fronts?”
He fearfully looked at Haldir and the warrior nodded. “Aye. They might very well be planning that. The orcs that nearly captured Lord Elrond must have been a scouting troop.” He sighed deeply. “The only ones close enough are the people from Gadion and the Dwarves from the dale.” He snickered. “Can you imagine a Dwarven city hidden under the soil of the dale?”
Melpomean smiled and shook his head. “Nay, I cannot.” But he didn’t like hearing they could not expect aid. “We should evacuate and send for messages by bird.”
Haldir shook his head. “Nay. That will let them know we know and then precious time to counter them is lost. But perhaps Lord Elrond can contact my lord and lady mentally? And Prince Legolas can surely contact his father for aid. It might not arrive in time to aid us, but it will arrive in time to avenge us.”
Suddenly there was a growl above them and Haldir pulled Melpomean close, raising his sword. Four orcs jumped down and smiled devilishly at them. “You will not tell for you will be death.”
Haldir narrowed his eyes, preparing for the battle. He didn’t waste any time answering them.
Instantly the four of them charged simultaneous and Haldir and Melpomean had to block two blows each.
Their enemies soon discovered Melpomean was the better of them and three of them focused on Haldir, letting their comrade keep the other one occupied. They would kill the blond one first.
Haldir realised the peril he was in but was unable to do anything about it. These guys had been improving their skills for he had never encountered such ferocious orcs before. But he would not die without wearing them down. “Go!”
But Melpomean refused and manoeuvred closer.
Haldir understood and tried to move towards him. Only fighting back to back did they have a chance, but before he could complete his intentions a sword embedded itself in his side. He hadn’t seen it coming as he was busy blocking two others and at least four daggers. He screamed in pain and planted his own dagger in the orc closest in retaliation.
“Haldir!” Melpomean glanced beside him and saw Haldir dropping to his knees, succumbing to the wounds. No, this couldn’t happen. Not Haldir. /A warrior like you doesn’t deserve to die like this./ He released an ancient battle cry, one he hadn’t uttered since Gondolin and charged in full force, moving the creatures away from Haldir.
He used his foot to take possession of Haldir’s sword and now he could really start fighting. He no longer defended anymore, he was fighting to kill and he wanted to kill them fast for he needed to get Haldir to the healers before the poison could spread throughout his body. But he made sure not to leave his position over Haldir’s now unconscious body.
Suddenly arrows planted themselves in the orcen necks and they dropped to the floor with loud shrieks. In a trance Melpomean saw the twins and Legolas ride closer, accompanied by three Mirkwood archers.
Legolas swiftly jumped off his horse. “Here, get on, take Haldir to the healing house.”
Melpomean jumped on, but wavered as he accepted Haldir. He couldn’t let Legolas walk home. Even if he was escorted, it wasn’t proper.
Elladan smirked. He knew the secretary was more for protocol than even Erestor was and grabbed Legolas without warning, pulling him on his own horse. “Legolas shall ride with me. Now come on. Tell us what you found out on the way.” None but Meleor noticed the look that passed over the Prince’s features as he suddenly felt Elladan’s body so close.
The party moved away at great speed. Melpomean told Elladan what they learned.
Legolas growled. He did not like that. “Doesn’t your father employ spies, Elladan?”
Elrohir nodded, answering for his brother. “Aye, why?”
“Then they can help. Surely reaching them does not require the normal way, does it? And I do think we should send aid. Three days….”
Meleor inhaled deeply. This was bad, real bad. But suddenly he cleared. “How many are there?”
Melpomean glared at him but then his face cleared up. “Only five hundred. But they are at the opposite border as well, maybe even all borders.”
But Meleor shook his head. “Nay. You would have found out if there was increased activity in those areas. I do believe they gave a little show for you two. We should prepare an army and charge them now. They do not expect that.”
Elladan smiled. This one had a nose for mazes. Already did he find a way to turn defeat to possible victory. And he realised the warrior was right. Even if his father had been a cat, he would still have sensed the threat and would have warned them. Thus, those ocs had to be the only ones.
Meleor smirked. “Our archers and your knowledge of terrain. A good combination if you ask me.”
Elladan yelped when he remembered something from one of the hunts. “Mel, did you say they were at the hidden vale?”
Melpomean nodded, his anxiety lessening now that the house was coming closer. Elladan smirked. “We could defeat them without a fight.”
It took Melpomean two seconds to understand but then he grinned madly, nodding. “Aye, we can. We should make sure that there are no others though. And the village needs to know.”
Elrohir nodded. “I shall send spies to see, protected by two soldiers.”
Legolas grinned, catching on. “Imladrian and Mirkwood. And what will we do?”
Elladan squished the arm that had encircled his waist, even though a rider of Legolas’ calibre didn’t need the extra hold, but he didn’t mind or question it. “We shall warn the village and tonight we shall break the dam. Release the Amrúsir (deafening river) to its full potential.”
Elrohir smiled at Legolas’ non-understanding face. “It’s a side river of the Bruinen but much more dangerous so before elves settled here adar had it dammed and led around.”
Meleor nodded. “Let me guess. Their campsite is its normal path?” He knew that if the river was allowed it’s normal path again it would take it with enthusiasm and the darkness would provide for cover, making sure a multitude of orcs would die in that tidal wave.
By now they had reached the courtyard and Melpomean steared the horse towards the healing house, already screaming for healers. Elrond stuck his head out and gasped when he saw what was happening. “Meleor, go to my study!” Things needed to be discussed.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Melpomean fidgeted now that he’s delivered Haldir to the healers. He should leave now, but he was reluctant to do so. What was it with that annoying warrior that kept him captivated?
Elrond dashed inside and nodded at his healers, who were already working top speed. He would stay and step in if necessary, but he didn’t think it was. He pulled Melpomean towards a bench and smiled. “Why did you not come to me instead?”
Melpomean looked at him in anger, but Elrond knew him well enough to know he wasn’t the real recipient of that glare.
The secretary shrugged. “I needed to stay with Haldir. He planned on spying on them alone. I send Elrohir to you.”
Elrond grinned and blushed. “He came. But his timing could have been better.” He grinned as Melpomean’s puzzled look changed to a understanding look. Elrond shrugged. “He entered without knocking.” He still felt amazed by Erestor’s action, but he would cherish the memory forever. It proved how deep their love really ran. If he could forget anything else…
He shook his head to clear it and focused on Melpomean again. “He left and I don’t think we heard his message, if he delivered it at all.” He smirked. “Glorfindel knocked five minutes afterwards. We were informed and I decided to send some warriors after you.” He grabbed Melpomean’s hand. “Don’t you know I’m connected to these lands. There are many orcs in the hidden valley, but that’s no problem. In fact, they’re precisely where I want them to be.”
Melpomean grinned. “Elladan said something like that.”
Elrond smiled affectionately. “I knew he was smart. Erestor already warned the village.”
Melpomean narrowed his eyes. “But they said something about the other borders. And that they’ll attack in three days time.”
Elrond shook his head. “Three months. Gandalf contacted me some days prior to my disappearance. He learned of their plan and I decided to make sure the orcs took the hidden vale as their hide out.” He smirked. “I hadn’t counted on the first batch being here so swift already though.” He looked at his secretary and understood the stunned expression. Erestor hadn’t exactly been pleased when he learned either and Glorfindel told him in no misunderstanding terms he would not speak to the Peredhel for a while.
Elrond shrugged and stood, approaching the bed. He needed to be sure there was no shard left or poison still in his system. The third batch of Athelas was now applied and Elrond smiled at the speed the herbs absorbed the poison. He nodded and smiled at Melpomean. “He’ll come through. I expect him to wake within some hours already.” He smirked at the carefully hidden desire and motioned for the elf to come closer. “Stay by his side for me and alert me should anything happen. I have to make sure the damage the river causes is fixable.”
He left and Melpomean was now alone with Haldir and the healers, who worked around him. He didn’t even realise Elrond had seen his desire, so shaken was he.
Soon only one healer attended to the wounded elf. “There, he’s set for now. Would you like something to drink or eat?”
Melpomean shook his head. He couldn’t eat anything right now.
Now that he was alone he finally allowed himself to face the fact. He was in love with Haldir. Seeing the warrior go down had hurt deep and he had seen enough friends fall to know he had felt something new this day.
TBC11
Elrond deeply inhaled the night air. This walk did him good. He looked over his shoulder and smiled sadly. Why did life have to be so cruel? Why did he have to lose his heart to someone who was already taken? He sighed and walked on. No use dwelling on this subject. It wouldn’t change the painful truth.
He stopped paying attention to his surroundings and allowed the trees to soothe his mind.
Suddenly a shudder coursed through the wood and he became alert again.
Focusing he detected an alien presence close to his left; alien and evil.
Silently he moved closer, determined to get a good look at the invaders and when he peeked around the tree his breath got caught in his throat. Yrch! Now he was in danger.
The creatures stood and seemed to have detected him as well.
He instantly dashed away, knowing his life was in peril. How did they get past the patrols? Past the security guards? And how would he get out of this alive? The wind blowing around him provided the answer. It reminded him of his mother’s shift. He could shift too, and later, once he was safe, he could undo it.
He nodded and focused deep, mentally saying the spell that would turn him. Two seconds later the elflord was gone and a ferocious, swift animal ran towards the manor.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Glorfindel nodded and halted the training. “It is enough for the eve. Go home, shower and sleep deep, for tomorrow is another gruelling day.”
His men snorted but prepared to leave.
Suddenly screams sounded through the air and Glorfindel dashed into the direction of its origin. “Man?”
Maidens ran towards him and he could see why. /What is that?/
He signalled for his men to form a line.
The animal stopped running and remained at the spot, not moving a muscle for several minutes. Suddenly it released a howl, which seemed to be angry and Glorfindel raised his sword, ready to defend his home.
“Seneschal?”
He ignored the voice and was focused on the beast. He yelped when he was shoved aside.
“Glorfindel, really. Attacking animals now?”
Glorfindel muttered as Erestor glared at him before kneeling on the ground, holding out a piece of meat. “Erestor, what are you doing?”
The counsellor kept his gaze on the animal even as he spoke. “I was on my way to bed when I heard the commotion and on my way out to see what caused it I saw this. The poor thing probably followed his nose. You know Elrond’s kitchen is the best in the world.” The tone was mocking and he smiled at the animal.
Glorfindel sighed. “All right, wise guy, what is it?”
Erestor laughed. “You should read more, you know? This is a bastam or obastam, one of the fastest catlike creatures in the world.” He looked up and smiled. “Don’t let the lethal appearance fool you, Glorfindel. They are not predators. They are omnivores and real opportunists. If they do not have to hunt, they don’t. But I do wonder what brought it here. There’s enough food in the woods.” His eyes narrowed. “Not to mention the fact it is alien to our region. Even in Mirkwood it is rare to see one.”
Glorfindel shrugged and was about to turn and leave when his eyes saw his sword turn blue. “Yrch!” He quickly scanned the trees and saw them. “Leithio i philiniath!” (release the arrows: Fire!)
Erestor stood and gaped at the scene. He didn’t fully understand it was happening, and failed to see how it could be happening. Suddenly he felt his robe being tugged and in a daze he obediently followed the lead.
Glorfindel and the soldiers swiftly dealt with the threat and the seneschal ordered several scouts and patrols to re-secure the borders. He too was surprised at this and he realised they had been extremely fortunate.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Elrond inwardly growled. Why wasn’t it working? He had said the spell, but he still was a cat. A cat and staring at Glorfindel’s sword and several arrows of his own archers. /Good thing I didn’t wish to be turned into a warg, I suppose./ How was he to tell them what was wrong?
He was still debating it when Erestor kneeled before him, holding out a slice of meat. Even though he had eaten his fill the scent caressing his nostrils was inviting and it was his favourite. He laid down and decided to temporarily stop worrying. He would find out what was wrong later.
And then Glorfindel’s order sounded.
Elrond jumped up and smelled them. His first thought was to aid Glorfindel, now that he was a dangerous animal he had a chance to do some serious harm to them, but seeing Erestor motionless prompted him into grabbing the robes and dragging the other inside.
He smiled when Erestor came back to himself and was about to dash out and aid the archers when he heard Erestor’s voice, thanking him. Before he knew it the counsellor had bended and held out his hand. /He wants to make friends? Erestor, are you trusting a dangerous animal?/ But he smiled and licked the hand.
Instead of leaving he now followed Erestor inside and remained at his side, settling down beside him in the Hall of Fire. /Did nana remain a bird because of this? Did the spell to return backfire on her as well?/
He rested his head on his legs and sighed. If he was to remain a cat he was best of as Erestor’s pet. He had no skills to survive in the wild.
His head went up with sudden realisation. Days after the incident a bird had flown to him and had remained with him for years afterwards. A blue feathered bird with knowledge shining from the orbs. He now, millennia later, realised it had been his mother.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The twins ran inside and were stunned to see a large cat lay at Erestor’s feet. “Erestor?”
The counsellor stood and smiled warmly. “It saved my life, Elladan. A stray arrow could easily have hit me. But I was too stunned about seeing it happen to realise I should run away. I am no warrior.”
He sighed. “Now Elrond will nag me even more to train.”
He smiled. “I was dragged inside and only when I saw the pillars did I realise I was led away, by him.” He caressed the animals head and tickled it between the ears.
The twins smiled at the picture.
But soon Elrohir frowned. “Where is adar?”
Erestor gasped and jumped up. “By the Valar! Glorfindel!” He ran away, towards where he figured the blond would be.
Glorfindel was indeed coming his way, a determined expression on his face. “This must never happen again. We are fortunate there are no victims.” Erestor grabbed his tunic and fear was in his eyes. It made Glorfindel reach out. “What is it?”
“Elrond. Have you seen him?” He ignored the cat that was pulling his garments. He was too concerned about Elrond.
Glorfindel shook his head and suddenly realised why Erestor was asking. “Damn it. They came from the direction of his walk.” He pried Erestor’s hands away. “Elrohir, Elladan, search the house, I shall track him myself. If he lives, we will find him.” He ran away faster than his feet could carry him.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Erestor went back to the Hall of Fire, where the air was so laden he couldn’t stand it and immediately turned to go to his own rooms.
He frowned when his door was being scratched.
Upon opening it the cat walked inside, looking up at him in anger. Erestor blinked and watched with a bewildered expression as the animal jumped on his couch and made himself comfortable.
He walked to his chair and shook his head.
He stood again and retrieved a plate, which he filled with water. “I can’t let you go thirsty.” He placed it on the side-table and smiled as the animal licked some water. “Don’t get used to this. Animals eat of the ground, you know.”
He felt himself less frustrated as he would have been and knew it was the company. It gave him an outlet he normally didn’t have. He knew he was rambling, but he was glad the cat didn’t interrupt. It didn’t even move, but seemed to listen intently.
And Elrond went from one revelation to the other. In this one night he learned more about his counsellor than he had held for possible.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The next morning came with fear and wariness. Hardly any elf had gone to bed that night and all were showing the effects.
Elrohir was extremely edgy and lashed out at everybody, fearing his father lost forever. Glorfindel hadn’t found him or any trace.
Elladan was off worse. He no longer cared about anything. Celebrían’s departure had already been hard on him, but losing Elrond cut through his heart and he couldn’t handle it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The seneschal sighed. “I don’t understand it. The tracks just vanished. I scanned the entire forest but there’s nothing. No trail, no body, no blood, no nothing. I don’t know what to make of it.”
Erestor sighed. “I do believe he survived. He is still alive, Glorfindel. I know that.” His hand reached out and came to rest on the cat’s head.
Glorfindel snickered. “I think you made a mistake in feeding him, Erestor.”
The counsellor smiled and looked at the creature with fondness. “He seems to have adopted me, aye.”
Glorfindel sighed and helped himself to more tea. “Have you named it already?”
Erestor shook his head. “I don’t know if he’ll stay.” He stood and sighed. “I best start working. Who knows what will happen now.”
Glorfindel watched in bemusement as the cat got to its feet and instantly followed the advisor. /I doubt he will leave you, Erestor./ For a second the animal looked backwards and Glorfindel could swear the eyes carried something familiar, but he quickly dispelled the notion. That was impossible.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Erestor sat behind his desk and sighed. He had to work, for the coming time all work would fall onto his shoulder, but this room only fuelled to remind him of Elrond and the peril the Peredhel might be in. He just couldn’t concentrate on his task. The words seemed to dance before his eyes.
He shook his head. “Come on, Erestor. Get it together. Elrond relies on you to keep Imladris in one piece.”
He sighed and looked at the paper before him. “Right. Road maintenance.” He groaned. He had always hated that. He looked at the cat. “I don’t suppose you know what to do with this one? Suggestions on bridge-ornaments.”
He watched in bemusement as the cat pushed the trash-bin closer.
He laughed. “Throw it away? Surely not.”
But the cat growled and used its claw to hit it from his hand. It landed on the ground and Erestor’s eyes widened as the cat picked it up and neatly deposited it in the basket.
He shook his head. “Amazing.” Only now did he realise he had never found any old suggestions, indicating that Elrond did this a lot. He laughed warmly. “Well, I don’t think Elrond will mind this.”
He grabbed the next paper. “Ai, a letter from Celeborn’s chief healer. Always impossible to read. Elrond was the only one able to decipher it.” He frowned. “I cannot throw it away… Perhaps Glorfindel can manage to read it, but he should concentrate on finding Elrond and supporting the twins.”
His eyes widened when a large green book was placed before him. Reading the cover he smiled. “Elrond keeps them here?” This was new. Where did Elrond keep this book? He had never seen it before. He carefully placed the letter in. He looked at the animal. “You remain here, you show much knowledge how this place works and I have the feeling I have seen your eyes before. But how can this be?” He sighed. /Where’s Elrond when you need him?/ He forced his tears inside and grabbed the animal’s head. “You are staying here, aren’t you? I should name you then.” He smiled. “How about Gelir?” (happiness) He nodded. “Yes, Gelir it is.”
Elrond cocked his head. He was surprised at this name. Why had Erestor picked it? And would the advisor realise who he was? He hoped so, for if anyone was capable of finding a cure, it was him.
Chapter two Things escalate
Erestor picked at his food. He had no real appetite. Things were going wrong, seriously wrong.
Glorfindel entered the room and sat down across him. “I worry for the twins. Elladan especially.”
Erestor nodded. “Still no trace of our lord?”
Glorfindel shook his head. “It’s been two weeks now, Erestor. We have to face the fact that he may never return.” He sneakily threw some meat on the floor for Erestor’s cat.
The counsellor saw and held it back, preventing it from eating the treat. “Pick that up, Glorfindel! He’s getting chubby.”
Glorfindel laughed. “Of course he is. He’s always at your side, you should ride the valley sometimes. The exercise will do him good. And you too.” He smiled. “Maybe the twins would do it for you?”
Erestor’s eyes hardened and he determinedly shook his head. “Nay! They take our their anger on him. I understand their feelings, but I will not allow this.” He stood and walked away, the cat instantly following him.
Glorfindel sighed and shrugged. “Soon we must force them to accept their duties as Elrond’s heirs. How to do that?”
He looked out and watched Elladan sweet talk to yet another victim. Why did the eldest twin have to react like that? Didn’t he have another mourning process?
He walked to the barracks and smiled when he saw Elrohir fire arrow after arrow. “Twenty dead orcs, at least.”
Elrohir turned and managed a small smile. “I am sorry I am not such good company lately. Elladan and I should accept our roles as new lords, shouldn’t we?”
Glorfindel nodded. “Aye. Erestor and Melpomean are doing the best they can, but even they need help, Elrohir.”
The twin sighed. “It’s just that doing so makes it so final. As if we’re telling the Valar we can manage without adar and that we don’t…” His voice choked up and Glorfindel hastened forward, pulling the twin in an embrace.
“Don’t speak like that, Elrohir. They know how we all miss him and how we just barely manage to hold on to our sanity, but for your father we must continue. He wouldn’t want his haven demolished.”
Elrohir nodded and allowed the blond to steer him inside. “I should apologize to Erestor. I’ve been harsh on him.”
Glorfindel smirked. “He understands your pain, Elrohir, for he shares it.” /More than you may ever know./
He sighed. “Did you really yell at his cat?”
Elrohir blushed. “It must have sensed my dark mood and wanted to comfort me.”
Glorfindel cocked his head as they walked inside the corridor. “And why did you react so violently to that?”
Elrohir sighed. “It was exactly what adar would have done and it made me miss him more.” He wiped away his fresh tears and sighed.
Elrohir excused himself from Glorfindel and made his way to the study. It was better to do this now. He nodded to himself and firmly knocked on the door and entered instantly, not waiting for permission.
Erestor looked up and his hand instantly sought out his feline companion.
Elrond licked it but kept his gaze firmly fixed on Elrohir. He could sense the despair and ached to help him, but he knew he couldn’t. Not anymore.
Elrohir saw the feline eyes fixed on his form and felt guilty. “Ehm, Erestor…”
Erestor smiled warmly. “What is it?” His voice was normal and filled with understanding and love.
Elrohir felt his tears come again and he angrily wiped at them as he sat down. “Sometimes it feels like I am drying myself out. How is it possible to keep crying like this?”
Erestor smiled and reached out, cradling the twin’s hand in his own. “Your pain needs a way out, Elrohir. In time you will manage to keep your tears inside and then slowly you will heal.” He smiled. “Do you want to help me?”
Elrohir nodded. “I should. I am the new lord.” He frowned. “With my twin, that is.”
Erestor nodded. “But he is far from ready to take this step. You have always been the strong one, Elrohir.”
The twin blushed at the compliment and he retrieved an apple from his tunic and bend forward, offering it to the animal. “Here, this is for you. I shouldn’t have lashed out at you, Gelir. Erestor is fortunate to have you.” He cocked his head. “You’re getting chubby.” He laughed as the animal seemed to snort. He looked up. “I can exercise him for you, if you want?”
Erestor shook his head. “Did Glorfindel put you up to this?” He laughed. “It is fine by me, but do not hunt him away. He’s good company.”
The cat jumped on Erestor’s lap and the counsellor yelped at the sudden movement.
Elrohir laughed. “I think that’s his way of telling you he likes it with you. I shall take him on a walk.” He stood and pulled the animal along.
When he had reached the meadow Elrohir sat down and signalled for the feline to run around.
But Elrond had other plans. He settled down at Elrohir’s feet and ignored the pushing to force him into moving.
Elrohir sighed and gave up. “How is it possible Erestor has spoiled you in such short time-span?” He snickered. “But I shall not tell him you refused your walk, Gelir. Erestor needs to get out of the study himself and walking you would do the trick.”
He smiled when the animal snuggled closer and demanded attention. “Father would always force my mind away as well. You would have enjoyed each other’s company, Gelir.”
The cat growled and Elrohir laughed. “I shall take that as an agreement. And we shouldn’t dally here too long. I do believe Erestor is in over his head.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Legolas looked grim but didn’t respond to his men’s questions. He too had no idea what he would do once he had found the thieve, but he would not give up his search. He had promised his father to bring the heirlooms back and he would.
If it were up to him the others wouldn’t even be there, but Thranduil had ordered their presence and had told them to protect him and ignore his orders if he demanded solitude.
Legolas shook his head. His father knew him well.
“The trail leads towards those forests.”
A soldier shook his head. “If he keeps up this course we will end up in Imladris.”
They shivered and Legolas growled. “I don’t care. Even Lord Elrond will not stand in our way once he learns our reasons. He and my father may not see eye to eye, they are both honourable elves. We shall not act behind his back.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Erestor yawned and stretched his body. He felt extremely sore in multiple places.
Elrohir smiled and pulled him up from the chair. “You should take a relaxing bath before retiring. I shall have some food send to your room.” He shook his head at Erestor’s apparent disobedience. “And from tomorrow on you are the one to walk your cat. Gelir, can I trust you to make sure this stubborn elf rests?”
When he had rejoined Erestor in the study he had been surprised to see the cat aiding the counsellor but Melpomean had quickly informed him. They believed Elrond might know this animal. It indeed seemed to know a great deal about the realm.
Elrohir smiled and hugged Erestor. “You are important to us all. If you collapse, the realm would too.”
Erestor snorted but remained silent as he felt the cat pull his robes, attempting to drag him along. “I see you managed to get him to obey you.”
Elrohir shook his head. “Nay. I think he has a mind of his own and only obeys those orders that fit him.”
Erestor snickered and nodded. “Perhaps. All right, I am coming, don’t tear the fabric, please.”
He swiftly told Melpomean what needed to be done and then left, stifling another yawn. “He is right. I am tired. Tired and worn out.” He looked at his four-legged friend. “I haven’t even had time to read up on my bastam-knowledge.”
Elrond shook his head and the movement made Erestor laugh.
He opened his door and waited for the other to be inside before closing it. He kneeled and hugged the animal. “You’ve brought so much joy to my life, Gelir.” He sighed. “If only Elrond would return. Then it would be perfect.”
He shook his head and stood before walking to his bathroom. He added some refreshing and healing herbs to the water and sighed contented when he fully declined in the warm and soothing water.
He closed his eyes and ignored the world.
When his eyes fluttered open he realised he had fallen asleep. He also realised he had been more exhausted than he had thought.
A smile graced his features when he saw Gelir stalk closer. “Don’t tell me you are hungry and now consider me a nice prey.” His voice was light and mocking. He yawned and shook his head to get rid of the remnants of sleep. “What time is it?”
Elrond jumped on the rim of the tub and licked Erestor’s forehead. He was concerned about the counsellor. The other hadn’t rested since his disappearance. He had waited for him to return in the adjoining room but after three hours his concern had gotten too much and he had sneaked inside. He now knew why it had taken the other so long to return. Erestor had fallen asleep. /You should pace yourself. Has it always been this bad or is this recent?/
Realising he didn’t know the answer shocked him. What if he had failed to see an ailing elf? What kind of healer had he been?
He suddenly felt filled with self-pity and wanted to lay down and wallow in it. The small rim of the pool wasn’t the most suitable place to do so and he briefly teetered from one side to the other before he lost his balance and landed in the tub with a large fountain as a result.
Emerging, he shook his head and spat out the water.
Erestor laughed and sat up, shaking his head in mirth. “I could swear you did that on purpose.” His amusement made way for disbelief as the cat merely curled itself up on his lap, resting his head on the rim of the pool. The water was still warm and Erestor was now effectively trapped.
Taking advantage of the situation Erestor made some lather. “Glorfindel complained about your smell, meldir.”
Before Elrond was aware of it Erestor was rubbing the lather into his fur.
The expected growl and flight stayed out and Erestor was mildly surprised to see Gelir snuggle closer and close his eyes, allowing this manoeuvre. /Wild animals hardly allow this. And you’ve not acted wild since I’ve seen you for the first time. Did Elrond keep you hidden from us?/
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Glorfindel frowned when Elrohir walked inside. “All right. Half an hour past starting time. Where are Elladan and Erestor?”
Elrohir smiled. “I think Elladan is eating in the village. He left with some comely elf. And Erestor will be fine. Gelir is with him.”
Glorfindel smiled and nodded. “Still, I think I’ll check on him. You can start if you want.”
Elrohir shook his head. “Nay. You waited for me, I shall wait for you.”
Glorfindel hurried through the corridor and ruffled on the door. “Erestor? Are you up? Erestor? It’s dinner time.” He frowned at the strange noises that came from the room and seriously considered breaking open the door.
But then it opened and a flustered Erestor joined him on the corridor. The blond had to jump backwards when Gelir sprang forward. He shook his head as the animal took the lead. “He strides through the place as though he owns it.”
Erestor laughed. “Well, he’s got me and Elrohir wrapped around his finger, so I should say that he does.”
Glorfindel laughed and pulled the advisor close. “I am glad he’s cheering you up, meldir. Makes one less elf for me to worry about.” He sniffed the air. “And dare I think you washed him?”
Erestor nodded and hastily sat down, greeting Elrohir in the process. “Aye, I washed him. He joined me in the tub, though not intentionally.”
At Elrohir’s surprised look he told the twin what happened. “And then he just settled in my lap as if it was the most normal thing. He actually liked being washed.”
Elrohir grinned and smiled at the cat. “If that doesn’t show deep trust, I don’t know what does.”
Glorfindel snickered. “Tell me, where does he sleep?”
Erestor shrugged. “He’s always on the couch when I fall asleep, but he’s on my bed when I wake up. Don’t ask me when he decides to exchange one for the other.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Elladan groaned as he reached consciousness. What the hell had happened? Slowly the darkness made way for dim light and he realised he was in a small room. Wanting to rub his head, for it ached enormously, he realised his hands were tight behind his back. This made him jolt to full awareness and the next thing he became aware of was being completely bound and gagged.
He groaned. /Ro…./ His twin must be so worried. He had no idea where he was and what time or what day it was. But now he knew not to go with complete strangers anymore. He had no choice but to await what would happen. He hoped Glorfindel would swiftly find him.
Chapter three Trouble likes company
Erestor sat up in shock and wondered why he had woken up. But he didn’t have to ponder it for long as he heard the dangerous sounds emanating from his own bed. He swiftly looked at his foot end and saw Gelir ready to strike. His shock grew when he saw a strange soldier with his back to the wall.
“Counsellor, lord Glorfindel told me to get you. Please restrain that thing.”
Erestor shook his head. “It’s a he and he’s a bastam.” He was bemused at his lecture and rubbed the sleep from his eyes. “What time is it? Did you knock?”
The soldier denied it and made himself even smaller.
Erestor yawned and nodded, sitting up. “You can go. Gelir, stop that. He meant no harm. But you are right, he should have knocked.” He grabbed his robes and hastily left, wondering what was wrong.
Glorfindel was already waiting for him, his face grim and filled with anger. It caused Erestor’s heart to speed up in fear.
Glorfindel handed him a letter and Erestor silently read, his eyes widening as he did so. “What? But how?” He shook himself out of his trance. “Does Elrohir know?”
Glorfindel shook his head. “Nay. I fear informing him. He won’t handle this, Erestor.”
The counsellor nodded. He agreed with the blond. “Any trails, information, where did he take Elladan?”
Glorfindel shrugged. “I don’t know. I’ve searched the valley but nobody has seen either him or that strange elf he was with. What do we do?”
Erestor sighed. “Ask for proof he is all right. Make sure he knows that only a whole Elladan will be worth the money. If the twin as so much has a scratch he must not be in doubt about our disagreement to pay this ransom.” Glorfindel widened his eyes but Erestor silenced him. “Of course I want him back as soon as possible, but if we pay without any delay or demands he will ask again and again and again and Elladan’s life will mean nothing to him. We must place the twin’s need first before ours.”
He sighed. “How about a scent-trail? The dogs could follow it.”
Glorfindel shrugged. “It disappeared near the Bruinen. Anything is possible.” He growled. “As if it isn’t bad enough Legolas is coming here.”
Erestor’s widened further. “What?”
Glorfindel nodded. “Aye. He’s requested a meeting with Lord Elrond.” He hung his head. “What do we do?”
Erestor sighed. “You must concentrate on finding Elladan. I shall receive Legolas.”
Erestor dashed through the place to make all the arrangement and hardly noticed Gelir’s absence.
Elrond had abandoned his side when he had learned of Elladan’s peril. He now gave every effort to locate at least a trail, but it was useless. There was nothing to guide him and he went back to Erestor’s side with a bad feeling.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Legolas smiled sadly at Erestor. “I had hoped to speak with Lord Elrond.”
Erestor nodded. “That’s not possible, I am afraid. You will have to settle for me. How may I assist you, young prince?”
Legolas realised this was no disrespect and he swallowed, willing his anger to fade. “A thieve has crossed your borders, counsellor. He stole my father’s heirlooms and I vowed to retrieve them.”
Erestor smiled. “It honours you to announce yourself and your intentions instead of sneaking around. You have our best wishes and feel free to make this house your base camp.”
Legolas shook his head. “Nay, I wish to remain hot on his trail, if you do not mind.”
Erestor shook his head. “Not at all. I can understand completely. Is there anything you need? Refreshments, food, repairs?”
Legolas smiled but shook his head. “Perhaps on the way back, if we’re allowed to make the detour?”
Erestor nodded and inclined his head. “It would be our honour to welcome you properly, Prince of Mirkwood.”
Legolas bowed and continued his way in haste.
It was in that moment that Elrond dashed inside the clearing and he cocked his head at the departure. Had he missed something?
Seeing it Erestor realised the other had abandoned his side and he hadn’t even noticed. He sighed to get rid of the pained feeling that coursed through him. “It’s too bad Legolas is on a mission already. He could have aided us in finding Elladan.” He sank to the ground, glad the animal instantly came closer. “I fear for Elrohir, Gelir. We must keep an eye on him. Perhaps his grandparents should visit?” He snickered when a shudder went through the feline fur and the animal fervently shook his head. “You disagree?” He sat up and smiled warmly. “Perhaps you are right. It will only bring back the pain of losing his mother.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Elrohir smiled when Erestor walked into the study. Gelir instantly leaped forward and jumped on Elrohir’s lap. The twin gasped. “Where did that come from?”
Erestor smiled. “He’s fond of you, Elrohir.”
Elrohir smiled and patted the animal. “Back to the floor with you. You’re Erestor’s pet, if any.” He sighed. “Where’s Elladan? I haven’t seen him since yesterday.”
Erestor swallowed but realised keeping the truth from him would only hurt him more. He placed a hand on Elrohir’s shoulder. “He’s been kidnapped. We don’t know where he is, but we’ll do our best to bring him back in on piece.”
The news stuck Elrohir like a sword and he sank back into the chair, his eyes staring into nothingness.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The days passed by without him knowing it and slowly he turned paler and paler. Nothing they did helped and Erestor gave up on talking to the twin, handing his care over to determined Glorfindel, who had to acknowledge defeat for the second time. There was no trace of Elladan and there hadn’t been a second note. He feared the twin may already be dead.
Miles away Elladan had long ago given up hope on any rescue and thus he ignored the strange sounds that travelled up. It had in fact been the first sounds he’s heard since waking from that sleeping potion, he know realised the other to have slipped in his drink.
But then the sounds got louder and he realised they were real.
This place was under attack. /I can be rescued. Whoever this is must hate them and considering the way I am being held I doubt they’ll see me as an enemy as well. What is it Erestor always says? My enemies enemy is my friend./ So he started trashing, making noise and hoping it was loud enough to attract some attention.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Glorfindel frowned when he saw a lone rider appear from the direction of Lórien. Now what was about to rock their world? He smiled when he saw it was Haldir. That meant there was just another message from Celeborn and Galadriel. Haldir always delivered the family letters and usually lingered. But right now he had no desire to talk to him. Seeing Erestor’s secretary walk past he smiled. “Melpomean! See to Haldir, will you.”
Melpomean hurried down the stairs and reached ground level the second Haldir dismounted.
The warrior smiled and bowed. “Melpomean? Where is everyone?” And why was the air so dense with fear?
Melpomean smiled but didn’t elaborate. It wasn’t his place to tell. “I shall show you your room.”
Haldir sighed. This didn’t look promising. The other was usually tight-lipped and hard to talk to, but now he sensed he should keep his distance even more. And he didn’t want to.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Legolas smiled wickedly and nodded. They would attack as soon as the stars were out and they would all attack together. Most citizens were out, celebrating, and Legolas knew they had to use this opportunity to their advantage.
Without words they charged and completely surprised the thieve. He tried to run, but the elves had the place surrounded and were now entering through every opening, completely cutting of his escape.
Legolas trusted the others to keep him covered and went about searching and found many items, amongst them his father’s jewels and he carefully tugged them away. “We shall bring all other stuff to Lord Elrond. Let him deal with finding the rightful owners.”
They were about to leave when they heard noises upstairs. Signalling silence Legolas hastily went upstairs, his daggers in hand. He wasn’t prepared for the sight that greeted him. “By the Valar! Meleor!”
His second in command dashed up and was equally stunned. “We must take him to Imladris. Lord Elrond will heal him.”
Legolas nodded. “We shall have to travel slowly with him. Help me.”
Together they removed the binds and the gag. Seeing the eyes till possess awareness made Legolas smile. “Mae govannan. Ni Legolas.” (well met, I’m Legolas) He smiled when the other passed out after smiling gratefully and with trust in his eyes. He ignored the funny feeling inside his stomach and concentrated on lifting him, shocked at how little weight he had to carry.
Meleor growled. “These bounds have been on him for quite some time. He’s malnourished and maybe even ill.”
Legolas nodded and placed his cloak around the frame. “The sooner we are gone, the better. To our campsite.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Legolas wrung out the cloth and wiped away the last dirt from the unconscious face. “At least he isn’t injured.”
But Meleor didn’t share his optimism. “Legolas, the bounds have been on him for quite some time. The blood circulation is only slowly restoring.”
The prince looked at him. “Is that why you are massaging his ankles?”
Meleor nodded. “It will help, yes. I doubt he can walk soon, though. He may as well be injured for the assistance he will need at any rate.” He smiled when he felt the other stir. “He’s coming round. How’s the tea coming? And the food?” A soldier handed him the needed items and returned to the fire.
Argh. Where was he? What had happened? /Air, I smell air. And wind. I am outside./ His memory came back and he opened his eyes, trying to find some answers.
Legolas smiled when the questioning orbs settled on him. “Take it easy. You will have sore ankles and wrists for some time to come, but massaging the areas will help. We’ve prepared some food and healing tea for you, but I doubt you can manage alone.”
Elladan smiled and realised the other was right. He could hardly move his limbs. “And you are?” At least his speech wasn’t impaired.
Legolas had the grace to blush. “Ai, forgive me. That’s highly inconsiderate of me. My name is Legolas and this here is Meleor.”
Meleor seized the opportunity to learn something about this strange elf. “You were lucky we came to retrieve some stolen items.”
Elladan cocked his head and Legolas smiled. This one was extremely sensitive and didn’t miss much, not even in this state. “Some stolen heirlooms and I promised adar I’d retrieve them.”
Elladan nodded. “He invited me for a drink and when I woke up I was there. I don’t know how many days went by before you came.” His voice was hoarse but he knew it would become better soon.
He allowed Legolas to manhandle him so he could be fed and eagerly ate and drank his fill. “Where are we?”
Meleor smiled. “Some miles west of Gadion.”
Elladan widened his eyes. “Gadion? But that’s hundredth miles south of Imladris!”
Legolas nodded. “Aye. We will take you there; Lord Elrond is a gifted healer.”
Hearing those words Elladan remembered his father’s possible death and the pain came back. Since his muscles were either sore or otherwise uncontrollable he couldn’t prevent his tears from falling.
Meleor frowned when he saw it. /He strikes me as a strong warrior. Why would he weep?/
Legolas felt the change and the shocking body. He immediately tightened his hold and rocked his charge in what he hoped was a comforting motion.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Elrohir was startled when he felt someone lift him. The hope was crushed when he saw the golden strands. “Glorfindel.” His voice was soft but filled with accusation.
The blond ignored it and carried him to his own rooms, hoping Erestor and his pet-cat had gone. “Stop this, Ro. We’ll find him back, I promise. And what you need right now is a nice, long and warm bath. And then some cupcakes.”
He kicked his door open and smirked when he noticed the counsellor had tidied it. Feeling the twin’s curious look on him he shrugged. “Erestor visited and it looks like he did some cleaning.”
The warm bath revived Elrohir and he watched as Glorfindel busied himself. He grinned at the decorations. “I’ve never seen a purple bathroom.”
Glorfindel grinned. “Is that so? I have you know it is like this because of you, Elrohir. I was a beautiful blue but when you were six you decided it needed to change.” He shook his head. “It never came out.” He grinned. “And according to the painters the only colour that will stick is black. And I am not having a black bathroom!”
He smiled when a servant knocked, delivering the food.
He swiftly returned and fanned some towels before the young Peredhel. “Out you go. The water must be cold by now.” He fussed over him and soon had him nice and dry, sitting on his bed with the dinner. “Eat, Elrohir.”
Even though the twin felt no hunger what so ever the blond’s tactics ensured he ate almost everything.
When Elrohir was done he removed the tray and searched for a board game. He knew he had one, but where?
He looked up in wonder when he heard scraping at his door. “Now what?”
He opened the door but wasn’t prepared for the dash of fur that passed him by and he fell to the ground.
Seeing Gelir’s actions force Glorfindel to land on his butt made Elrohir laugh. “Where’s Erestor?” He snickered as the cat curled up, pretending to sleep. “He’s asleep?” Before he knew it the animal was over him, licking him, the raspy tongue making him laugh.
Glorfindel scrambled of off the floor and watched as the twin rolled around on the bed.
But after some minutes he grabbed the animal and placed it on the floor. “That’s enough.”
Elrohir sat up, his eyes shining with temporal happiness. “Findy is right, Erestor will wake up.” He sighed. “I should go to my bed.”
Glorfindel shook his head. “You’re not going anywhere. You’re staying right here. I’ll look after you.”
Elrohir narrowed his eyes but they widened in bemusement when he heard a growl from the corridor.
Glorfindel looked over his shoulder, growling as well. “You mind your own business.” He shook his head and settled on the bed. “Now might not be the best time to say this, Elrohir, but I greatly care about you.”
Elrohir managed a smile. “I know. Erestor does too, and I care too, but…” He sighed sadly. “I just can’t help it. Adar didn’t come back and now Dan, I…”
Glorfindel gently shook him and smiled. “I’d rather keep it to myself, but Erestor will unleash his cat at me if I don’t.” Now he had Elrohir’s attention and he smiled warmly, caressing his face. “I love you.”
Elrohir grinned. “Dito, Findy.” He yawned. “I should go now.”
Glorfindel shook his head. “That’s not what I meant. I meant… O damn it.” He ignored everything and leaned in closer, gently kissing Elrohir with a fleeting kiss.
The twin gasped and pulled back, but the sensation demanded to be felt and confused him. Glorfindel had just kissed him, as a lover, not as a friend. But what did that mean? For him?
Glorfindel smiled and pulled Elrohir down. “Give it time, Elrohir, but please don’t make any rash decisions for you’d break my heart if you do.” He planted another swift kiss on those tempting lips and smiled. “We should sleep.”
Elrohir didn’t get a chance to ask his questions for every time he made a sound Glorfindel shushed him.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Elladan woke to the smell of warm meat and he instantly tried sitting up, groaning as his muscles strongly protested and instantly made him abandon the action. He closed his eyes as the severe pain sliced through his body.
He smiled when he heard the now familiar voice speak to him and he opened his eyes. Instantly he became worried. “Why are you smirking?” He shook his head at the innocent look that now passed over the other. “It always means trouble and I doubt you are an exception. Ai, my ankles.”
Legolas instantly moved his attention towards the pained areas and Elladan smiled grateful.
Legolas shrugged. “Look to your right and you’ll find out.”
Elladan frowned but complied, grinning when he saw the tub. “That I didn’t know.”
He blushed when his stomach growled.
Legolas smiled warmly. “Time for dinner. And while we eat my men will fill your bath.”
Elladan cocked his head. /Your men? I already knew you control them, but in which capacity are you their leader?/
Legolas smiled as he read the question in his eyes. “You are slowly regaining your strength. As soon as we reach the border we shall not rest anymore. The sooner I have you in Lord Elrond’s hands, the better it is.” He flew forward when the other struggled to sit. “Nay, lay down. You need to give it time.”
Elladan ignored it and growled when he couldn’t grab hold of Legolas’ tunic. “Have you seen him? Is he all right?”
Meleor, who had instantly responded to Legolas’ cry for help, pressed the Peredhel back on the bed and frowned. /Why does he ask after Lord Elrond?/
Legolas shook his head. “We’ve passed through Imladris not long ago and I felt it only proper to let Lord Elrond know. I haven’t seen him though. Counsellor Erestor told me he was indisposed at the time. I suspect he was healing someone.”
Elladan didn’t know what to think. He knew the other told him the truth but he didn’t know whether Erestor had told the truth or had given a ruse. “When? When did you pass my realm?”
Legolas smiled and told him.
Elladan nodded, sure now. It had been a ruse. With that knowledge came the crushing truth: his father hadn’t returned and was most likely dead. He averted his head to stop them from seeing his tears.
Meleor frowned. “Why did you ask? And why does our answer displease you? Who are you?” He shrugged when Legolas glared at him.
The blond prince moved to hold Elladan close and he wiped away his fresh tears. “Ignore him.”
Elladan smiled. “Don’t you know then? Who I am?”
Legolas shook his head. “We are unfamiliar with Elrond’s realm and his subjects. This is the first time we’ve come this way.”
Elladan nodded and opened his mouth but Meleor interrupted. “The water is ready. We should get you in now. Hopefully it will help.”
Suddenly the twin felt extremely shy and prudish, not whishing to be naked in front of everyone.
Legolas nodded and looked up. “I can manage alone. Grant him some privacy.”
The soldiers understood and left the cabin. They would use the time to scout the area.
Now that they were alone Legolas gently removed the dirty clothes and just as gently lowered Elladan into the tub. The twin sighed at the blissful sensation. “I can leave you now if you want, but I’ve got some shampoo with me.”
Elladan smirked. “Please, if you don’t mind?”
Legolas shook his head. He didn’t mind a bit. He kept the other occupied by talking about his home and father.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Elladan yawned and stretched as good as he could and smiled when he realised he had regained his mobility, but he wouldn’t show it yet.
Legolas smiled as well. “The warm water did help. I was thinking we could stay here and repeat it.”
But Elladan shook his head. “Nay. I want to go home. They are worried sick about me.” He started shivering again and Legolas looked around for more blankets to cover him in.
Finding none he shrugged and spooned behind him, pulling him close and heating him with his own body. “Healing elves feel the cold, don’t they?”
Elladan nodded. “Being Half-Elven doesn’t exactly help here.”
Legolas widened his eyes. Half-Elven? But there weren’t that many Peredhil. And he had definitely not heard of any others than Elrond and his family residing in Imladris.
Hearing Meleor walk inside he looked over his shoulder. “When can we continue?”
Meleor shrugged. “The rain is at its worst now. A couple of hours I think. How is he?”
Legolas shrugged. “Improving. He said he’s a Peredhel, but how can that be?”
Meleor’s eyes widened and then the captain’s look became one of horror. “But that means Lord Elrond is missing.” Legolas frowned but Meleor nodded. “The only Peredhil in Imladris are Elrond and his twin-sons Elrohir and Elladan.”
Legolas gasped. “He said his name is Elladan. Oh, by the Valar, Lord Elrond!”
Meleor nodded. “We must make haste. His twin must be insane with worry by now.”
Legolas nodded. “No more unnecessary rests.” He looked at the elf in his arms with a different view. /You are Imladris’ new ruler. Can there be more behind your kidnapping?/ He laughed to himself. /I’ve fallen for Elrond’s heir. Who would have thought?/
Chapter five Changes
Erestor woke up and belatedly realised he had fallen asleep. Hearing tisking noises he looked up and stared into Elrohir’s and Glorfindel’s concerned faces.
The blond approached and sat down on the desk. “Don’t tell me you haven’t seen your bed this night?” He looked at the cat on Erestor’s lap with reproach. “I thought I did not have to worry about him because you are here?” He shook his head. “What am I doing? Talking to a cat!”
Elrohir grinned and approached as well. “How are you doing, Erestor?”
The counsellor stretched. “I’m a bit stiff.” He sighed. “A Mirkwood soldier is on his way here. I don’t know what to expect. Legolas may have run into difficulty.”
Glorfindel nodded. “I shall personally hear what he has to say.” He reached out and pulled the advisor to his feet. “And now we go outside. The three of us need fresh air.” He laughed at the funny sight as Gelir tumbled down to the floor and had to roll around before standing again.
Erestor’s laugh filled the room. “Don’t look at me like that. Glorfindel hauled me up.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Elrohir was glad he had so easily talked sense into the blond. Now he wanted to get some answers. He couldn’t be mistaken. It had to be. But he kept it to himself, knowing Glorfindel would never understand.
He ran through the corridors and smiled when he located Erestor and Gelir. /It has to be./ “Erestor, can I join the party?”
Erestor nodded. “I was waiting for you to ask, Elrohir. Go prepare your horse.”
Elrohir nodded. “Can I borrow Gelir for a moment?” He didn’t wait for an answer but pulled the animal along, which bemused Elrond, since the twin had kept his distance so far.
Once they had reached solitude Elrohir sat down and stared into the eyes.
There was knowledge in his orbs and it unnerved Elrond, but he only cocked his head.
Elrohir sighed. /I am not going to make myself ridiculous, for this is the only explanation./ “Elladan’s necklace is identical to mine.” Seeing the feline eyes narrow Elrohir knew he was right. “Save for one detail. And besides the two of us only our father can point it out.”
He stilled and bit his lip, suddenly unsure. “Adar?”
Elrond blinked. That was not what he had expected. But he smiled and nodded, licking his son. He yelped when Elrohir suddenly buried him in a tight hug.
“We didn’t know. What happened? How’s this possible? Is there a way to undo this?” He laughed hysterically. “No wonder Findy didn’t find your tracks.” He sat back when he realised his was crushing his father and he blushed.
Elrond licked him again, unable to speak his words.
Suddenly he jumped up and pulled Elrohir along by tugging his robes.
Elrohir followed. “I have to change, adar, I am going to ride out and meet Elladan. He’ll never believe me when I tell him this.” He frowned when Elrond dragged into his private library and jumped on the chair.
The twin cocked his head. “Do you want me to pick a book?” A nod and he looked around. How to find out which one without pointing to all of them? Suddenly he smiled. “All right. Fast way. I’ll count the shelves from the bottom. Which one?”
Elrond instantly understood and tapped his leg ten times.
Elrohir counted and made his hand follow. “All right, do I go left or right?” He heard one tab and figured it meant left. “Let me know when I’m there.” His hand flew across the covers and suddenly Elrond tapped again and Elrohir stilled his hand, reading out the title.
He smiled when he saw his father nod.
He picked it from the shelve and opened it.
Elrond immediately jumped up and wanted to flip the pages.
Elrohir laughed and pushed him away. “Let me do this. You’ll ruin the book.” He placed the volume on the ground and started flipping. Suddenly he stopped and read the part that intrigued him. /Should the reversal spell not work, then unhappiness is the cause. Alter the base for this unhappiness and the change will occur./
Elrohir was puzzled. His father was unhappy? The only thing he could come up with was love. /Nana sailed many centuries ago and adar loves…/ His eyes widened as he realised the truth and he laughed warmly. “That’s it. Oh, adar. I am so happy for you.” He placed the book back, ignoring Elrond’s disapproval and left, leaving his father in a puzzled mood.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Erestor frowned when the door to his study flung open and Elrohir dashed inside. “We’re leaving. It’ll take some days before we return.”
He placed his hands on both sides of the counsellor’s head, making sure he had his undivided attention. “Erestor, I had forgotten it but when adar disappeared you were hurt in heart as well. But you cannot bottle it up. Why don’t you tell Gelir what’s really wrong? He won’t question it, like we might.”
Erestor widened his eyes. This wasn’t possible. The twin couldn’t know.
But Elrohir smirked and nodded. “I expect to see some changes when I am back.”
Erestor was stunned. What changes was the twin referring to?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Elrohir smiled when he found everything ready for departure when he arrived at the stables. He swiftly mounted and signalled departure. “Elladan, I am coming.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Legolas’ eyes widened beyond belief when he felt himself yawn. He shook his head to get rid of the spell tiredness was weaving in his head. He did not want to sleep. He had to look after Elladan. And that meant riding until the horses needed the rest, not until he did.
The twin’s hand settled on his own and they both felt the jolt of energy course through their bodies.
Elladan looked over his shoulder and smiled at the blond. “We can afford to rest a while. We’ve passed the borders a while ago. It is safe.” He inhaled the air. “Perhaps I should reconnect to the lands. It’s welcoming me back.”
Meleor nodded. He agreed with the Peredhel and signalled a halt. “Come, let me help you down.”
Elladan cocked his head when he saw the other’s calculating look. He’s seen them enough on Glorfindel to know he should ask.
Meleor smiled at his perceptiveness. “I’m just wondering why the land didn’t warn your people.”
Elladan shrugged, hissing as his muscles gave great protest at the movement. Or rather, as they would have done.
Legolas smiled and dismounted as well. “That’s a good sign, Elladan. You can at least move now.”
Elladan nodded. “Still hurts though. And to answer your question, Meleor. I do believe they’ve tried to reach out but adar has only recently disappeared. We’re all shaken.”
Legolas nodded in understanding. “It didn’t have that same tight connection with you and your twin yet.” He smiled. “It’s the same in my realm. Adar can sense any disturbance, but I cannot. I don’t have the same link.” He laughed. “Did you two have the same trouble hiding? Adar could find me everywhere within ten minutes.”
Elladan laughed. “Nay, but I do believe adar pretended not to know where we were.”
He sighed when Meleor carefully placed him on the familiar soil. Immediately the land reached for him. Suddenly the twin widened his eyes. His talk with Legolas had made him realise something vitally important. /The connection is lacking./
He smiled at Legolas. “You should lay down as well. Shouldn’t he, Meleor?”
The warrior laughed but raised his hands. “I am staying out of this. I like my health, young one.”
Legolas threw him a glare but settled down besides Elladan. “You are right. If I don’t I will only fall of the horse and add to your injuries as well as giving myself one.”
Elladan snickered and rested his head sideways to look at him.
He closed his eyes and reached out. The pattern greeting him was familiar, extremely familiar. /I should have practised it./ Suddenly his eyes flared open in disbelief.
Meleor kneeled and grasped his hand. “What is wrong? Is it your brother?”
Legolas opened his eyes as well and rolled onto his side. “Elladan?” He brushed some strands out of the twin’s face.
Elladan smiled at their care and concern. He shook his head. “I sense adar on the land. But that’s impossible.”
Legolas beamed and pulled him close. “Why would that be impossible? You said he went missing.”
Meleor nodded. “He may have had an accident and now found his way home. Or maybe he still isn’t there but wandering around without a memory? It -has- happened.”
Elladan smiled but shook his head. “Nay. Glorfindel would have found his trail.” He growled, not liking this at all. How could he be sensing his father when the elder Peredhel was most likely dead?
Still, Legolas was determined to look on the bright side. “But don’t you think that if your father is without memory his instincts will kick in? His instinct to hide himself for instance. I know without a doubt not even a tracker of Glorfindel’s magnitude can locate Lord Elrond if he doesn’t want to be found.”
Meleor nodded. “He was a warrior once. Removing your tracks and surviving in the wild becomes ingrained. Elladan, you sense your father and yet there is no trace of him. This is the only logical conclusion.” He stood and looked at the trees ahead of him. “Once we reach your home we will tell them. Your twin must be able to sense it better. It will aid you in finding him.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Erestor sighed as he stepped into his bed. He shook his head. “You can share my bed, you know? You climb in during the night at any rate.” Instantly he was covered in fur and he giggled. Especially when the cat sat back and cocked his head at him, as if asking a question.
Erestor sighed again. “I had a disturbing conversation with Elrohir. He went to fetch Elladan and he told me he wanted to see some changes when he returns.” He shook his head, automatically petting the other. “And I have no idea what he’s talking about. He cannot desire me to breakdown.”
Elrond frowned. Breakdown? What on earth was wrong? He crawled closer and gave him a cat-kiss. /Oh, to kiss you for real…/
Erestor smiled. “I thought I had hidden it. But he knows.” Tears gathered in his eyes. “Not that it matters anymore.” He pulled the other close and wept his tears, all his pain now coming out.
Elrond was extremely worried. What was wrong? What precisely did Elrohir know? He longed to aid Erestor, make it better, but he had no idea how to do so.
Erestor realised he should talk, before he would go insane and Elrohir was right. Gelir wouldn’t question him, wouldn’t look down on him. It made sense. “I miss Elrond, Gelir.”
Elrond moaned. He so wanted to tell him he was right here. /Please, don’t cry. Oh, Erestor./
Erestor buried his face in the warm fur. “And he never knew. I never said or did anything. I wish I had.”
Elrond was puzzled. /What? Said what? Erestor, what are you hiding? Would I be able to find Elrohir’s diary tonight? I know he possesses one. Perhaps he wrote his knowledge down./
Erestor’s next words jolted Elrond from one revelation to another. “Not that he would have welcomed it. Why would he? I am a mere counsellor, not a fabled warrior or king. But I love him so much.”
Now that he was confessing the words tumbled from his lips and he told his feline companion everything. How he had always watched from the distance with a yearning to be at his side, how he had fantasized about being in his arms at night, about making love.
Erestor felt relieved now that it was out of his system and his sobs slowly died out. “I’ll be alone forever. You’re all I have, Gelir.” His emotional outburst had been exhausting and Erestor succumbed to the sleep, clinging to his feline friend.
Elrond was shocked. /You love me? Me? Oh, Erestor, I’m so sorry. I should have made a move, but I didn’t think you’d want me. I’m such a fool./ He snuggled closer and after watching Erestor for a while fell in a deep sleep himself.
During the night the transformation finally occurred and Elrond changed back into himself, held tightly by his counsellor. Neither elf woke.
Chapter six you’re back
Glorfindel stared out over the trees, hoping Elrohir and Elladan would safely return soon. He felt uncomfortable, having voiced his love and being so unsure about its returned affections. He had no idea how the twin felt for him. Perhaps Elrohir had forgotten his whole admission?
He jumped in shock when he heard a heart-breaking scream that could have scared a nazghul away. /Erestor!/ He unsheathed his sword and ran towards the origin of the sound: Erestor’s private rooms.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Legolas groaned when he was nudged awake and a second later he glared at Meleor.
The warrior smiled. “I believe his twin is approaching.” He cocked his head in the desired direction and Legolas saw what he meant.
He felt confused. Part of him was glad for Elladan and the fact a healer was about to take proper care of him but another part was extremely jealous. Now he had to stop holding Elladan and taking care of him, for surely his twin would do that.
He stood and smiled warmly at the approaching party. “Well met, Lord Elrohir.”
Elrohir jumped off and shook his head. “No need for titles. You saved my twin. You have no idea how grateful I am.”
Legolas smiled sadly. Elrohir was right; he didn’t have the foggiest. Always he had wanted to have brothers and sisters, but he was a single child.
Elrohir kneeled and gently placed his hand on Elladan’s shoulder.
The commotion and sensing the differences made Elladan reach consciousness again and he blinked in confusion when he didn’t see Legolas face. Then he realised it was his twin staring at him and he flared up, pulling him in a tight hug. “Ro! I am so glad to see you!” He pulled back a little and crossed his legs. “I can sense adar.”
While the twins were talking and solely focused on each other Legolas and Meleor shared a confused look. But soon the old warrior smirked. What do you know? It was mutual! He removed himself from the scene.
Chapter seven Returning home
Elladan frowned when Elrohir steered their horses aside from the party. “Ro?” He looked over his shoulder but instantly averted his head when he looked straight into Legolas’ questioning eyes. He felt bad about lying to the blond and knew he had to explain, but he rather didn’t. He closed his eyes and shrugged. “Ro?”
Elrohir smirked. “I just don’t want them to hear us. You are right. Adar is still here. We just never realised. Remember Gelir?”
Elladan laughed and nodded. “Erestor’s cat. Of course. That’s is one strange animal.”
Elrohir nodded. “That’s adar. He can shape shift, and the spell to turn him back didn’t work.” His smirk grew and his eyes glistened.
Elladan cocked his head. “What happened these past days?”
Elrohir shrugged. “Not much. I fell to despair, Glorfindel confessed his love for me, and I hope Erestor will tell adar he loves him for then he shall change back into our ada.”
Elladan blinked and pulled the leads without realising it, his horse immediately obeying and coming to an halt, forcing Elrohir to do the same.
Legolas and Meleor pulled up beside them before halting themselves. “What’s wrong?” The more time passed the more worried they became. Elladan hasn’t spoken to them since his twin arrived and even though they had known to share the twin they hadn’t thought this would happen. And Meleor was worried about the effects it would have on Legolas. If it were up to him he’d knock some sense into the dark-haired elf.
Elladan shook himself out of his trance and goggled at Elrohir. “Glorfindel said what?” He shook his head again, unable to believe the words. “Ro, what are you saying?”
Elrohir looked at him in amazement. “You heard me. Is it really such a shock to hear I started to fade. First nana sails, then adar disappears and then you. It all was too much.”
Elladan growled. “That’s not what I meant, gwanunig. Glorfindel!”
“What about him? He tried to track you down, but…” Another growl silenced him and he looked at his twin in sudden fear. What was wrong with Elladan?
Elladan snorted and narrowed his eyes. “Fine. You don’t want to talk to me. That’s fine. I will see you at home.” Before he could motion his horse to a fast gallop someone pulled his leads and prevented it. Looking back he glared at Meleor.
“I am sorry, but I do not think this is wise. We should stay together.”
Elladan was about to lose his temper but Legolas placed a calming hand on his own. “Elladan, please?” He smiled warmly. “What on Earth were you two talking about?”
Elladan shrugged. “Don’t know. He won’t tell me.”
The Prince looked at Elrohir and cocked his head. “I heard Glorfindel’s name. Is something wrong with him?”
Elrohir shook his head. “Nay.” He wondered what his brother was thinking but suddenly his face lit up, realising he had told his twin without realising it. He laughed. “Oh, Elladan. I am sorry. I hadn’t realised I had spoken it. And aye, he does.” He looked panicked. “We have to go home. O, shit, shit, shit.”
Legolas looked stunned. Those curses were alien to him. Must be Hobbit-curses, since Imladris had dealings with them where his realm hadn’t. “Elrohir?”
Elrohir ignored him and looked pleadingly at his twin. “I have left without answering him. What if he thinks…. I cannot let him think that. We have to go.”
Slowly understanding dawned on Elladan and he was glad. He nodded. “Let us go then. With speed.” He kicked his horse and not even ten elves would have kept his steed back.
Legolas reacted instantly and followed the twins, swiftly followed by the others who had been caught off guard by the movement.
Meleor smiled to himself. It looked like Elladan wasn’t ignoring Legolas on purpose after all. And his Prince did have a calming effect on him. Yes, very promising indeed.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The second he saw his sons Elrond’s tears fell. Elladan was all right.
Elrohir halted his horse; it was all he could do not to fall off. Even though he had expected to see his father again, it surprised him none the less.
Elladan blinked but then sprang into life, rushing towards his father. “Adar!” Elrond effortlessly caught him and held him close, as much for Elladan’s need as for his own. They both wept their happy tears.
Legolas signalled for the others to remain at a distance and give them some time alone. Even though he couldn’t imagine Elrohir’s feelings at finding his brother all right, he could relate to the feelings coursing through their systems right now. He remembered how worried his father had been when he had gone missing when he was ten. He had fallen through a hole and had broken his leg. Waiting in the dark, dirty tunnel for someone to find him had been the worst time of his life and by the time they did he had been reduced to a sobbing, scary and extremely dirty elfling. He had been so afraid he’d refused to be separated from his father for at least a month. Thranduil had been forced to take his son everywhere he went. Legolas shuddered as he remembered.
Elrohir had now joined his father and brother and smiled. “I guess it happened?”
Elrond smirked and nodded. “Aye. I am surprised you did not hear his scream when we woke up.” He pulled back but maintained bodily contact with his eldest, his expert eyes going over him.
Elladan chuckled. “I am well, adar. Honest.” He rested his head on his father’s shoulder, but then gasped and pulled back, having remembered. “Ai, father.” He pulled back and straightened himself. “Father, this is Legolas. He saved me.”
Elrond inclined his head and stepped up to the blond. “In that case you have my eternal gratitude, Prince of Mirkwood.”
Elladan and Elrohir widened their eyes and looked at each other.
Elrond ignored them and motioned for Legolas to join them. “I take it you caught your thieve? Erestor filled me in.”
Legolas nodded. “Aye, we did. I am pleased to see you well, my lord. And I was honoured to be of assistance.”
Elrond smiled and pulled his eldest closer, ignoring the whimpered protests. “Humour me, Elladan.” He focused on Legolas again. “How is your father, Legolas? And Mirkwood? It’s been ages since I’ve seen its splendour.”
This surprised them all. They had had no idea Elrond had been to Mirkwood.
By now Erestor and Glorfindel had reached the party and smiled warmly.
Elrond discretely pushed his youngest into Glorfindel’s direction and extended his arm for Erestor, who blushed at the motion. Elrond smiled. “Would you prepare rooms for Legolas and his men, Erestor? They require rest and are welcome to stay. Tonight we feast.” He would love to kiss him, but Erestor wasn’t ready for public display yet, so he reluctantly held himself back.
Legolas cleared his throat. “Begging your pardon, lord Elrond, but may I enquire when you’ve been in my realm? I don’t remember a visit.”
Elrond smiled warmly. “I would think not. You were only ten. Your father begged me to come and heal your mental wounds.” He snickered. “He loves you that much.”
Legolas cocked his head. “I don’t understand.”
Elrond looked at Legolas intently. “Your father hates me, Legolas. Even more so than he does those spiders that infest your realm. But for you he set it aside and asked my aid.” He smiled. “And I grabbed the opportunity with both my hands. Ever since there’s been a fragile peace between our lands. But come, enough of that.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Legolas frowned in annoyance when knocks sounded. He had just prepared for an hour of sleep so he wouldn’t fall asleep during the feast. Maybe if he pretended to be asleep? But no, that would be impolite. Not to mention it forced the servant to make another trip to his room at a later time, which he would not feel comfortable about. He hastily threw the covers away and approached the door, opening it before he could change his mind.
Elladan smiled warmly but his expression fell at seeing the tousled hair. “Oh, I am sorry. I did not realise. Did I wake you?”
Legolas smiled warmly and widened the crack so Elladan could come in. “Nay. I had only reclined.” He was curious what brought the twin here, but was hesitant to ask, lest his attraction showed. But shouldn’t he be with Elrohir?
Elladan sat down and took a deep breath. He had to do this now before he lost his nerve. “I am sorry.”
“You already said that.” The blond’s voice was filled with mirth.
The twin shook his head. “Nay, for lying to you. Pretending I hadn’t regained my mobility yet when in fact I had.” He lowered his head, feeling guilty.
“Why did you do it? Do you think us without honour?” But nay, he was pretty sure he had seen surprise in the eyes of both twins when Elrond had addressed him formally. So that couldn’t be it, could it?
Elladan’s head flared up and fire shone from his eyes. “Nay, never.”
Legolas cocked his head in bemusement. “Than why?”
Elladan inhaled deeply again. This was it. “I don’t know.” Immediately after speaking he shook his head. “Nay, that’s not true. I didn’t want to lose….” O man, how was he going to say this without humiliating himself even more?
Legolas laughed. “You didn’t want me to stop massaging you.” He shook his head.
Elladan nodded, glad with the excuse. And it did come close to the real reason.
Legolas smiled and sat down. “There was no reason to go to such extreme measures, Elladan. All you have to do is ask.”
He pulled his legs close and looked at Elladan from over his knees. “And now that we are being honest, I have an admission to make as well.”
Elladan’s eyes widened and locked with his.
Legolas shrugged. “I was afraid you wouldn’t want to be near me anymore.”
If possible Elladan’s eyes widened further. He opened his mouth but produced only stammered syllables. He shook his head and tried again. “Why would I?”
Legolas smiled, though it lacked conviction. “You had your twin back.”
Elladan shrugged. “It’s not like we’re attached at the hip, Legolas. If the situation was reversed would you abandon me just because your brother had come for you?”
Legolas’ eyes filled with tears. “I don’t have any siblings.”
Elladan’s look was filled with remorse, having seen the pain his innocent question had caused. “Oh.” What could he say to this?
Legolas smiled. “My mother died when she gave birth to what would have been my sister, but the infant was already dead.”
Elladan’s look turned to horror and he scooted closer, enfolding Legolas in a hug. “Ai. I am sorry.” He grinned. “Feel free to borrow my sister on occasions. You’d have to go to Lórien to see her though. And I am pretty sure you’ll give her back within a month.” His grin spread and he pulled back, ignoring the stunned look before him. “And while you’re at it, you can borrow Ro as well.”
Legolas laughed. “Are you saying I now find myself with three make-believe siblings?”
Elladan closed his eyes. “If you want.”
The blond smiled and nodded. “I always wondered what it would be like. Having brothers and sisters.”
Elladan laughed. “Too bad we’re too old for pulling pranks.” His eyes glistened. Maybe, if Elrohir agreed, they weren’t. But did he want to do that to Legolas? He shrugged. The blond wanted to know what it was like and this would definitely ensure him finding out. The times he’s been punished for his siblings misbehaviour were countless. Yes, Legolas would be in for a surprise. He stretched and stood. “I shall see you at the feast then.”
Chapter eight The dance
Elrond leaned back in his chair and smiled, watching his people dance, talk, mingle and basically have fun. He had wasted no efforts for this feast for not only was there enough obvious reasons with both him and Elladan being back, but he wanted to celebrate the hidden ones as well.
He felt overjoyed at finally knowing the truth, finally having Erestor. And then there were Elrohir and Glorfindel; he had no doubt his golden haired friend would succeed shortly and it looked like Elladan had attracted Legolas’ attention. Two reasons why the bridge between the two realms might be finally overcome.
Yes, he was happy.
He moved his hand and placed it on Erestor’s forearm. “Are you happy?”
Erestor nodded and looked at him, still not fully believing it was real. But he was happy to have him back. Looking back at the dancing elves he felt a twing of sadness. How wonderful it must be to twirl around in Elrond’s arms. But he knew, as did everybody, Elrond didn’t dance, preferring to admire the joy from a distance.
So it wasn’t without shock that he saw Elrond standing up. What was he going to do? He swiftly scanned the room, wondering what he’s missed. Were the twin having trouble? Or had someone fainted?
He yelped when he was suddenly hauled to his feet and his surprise and worry mounted when he saw Elrond was responsible.
The Peredhel smiled warmly at him, his gaze filled with love. “These past days have told me how to read you, Erestor. Come, we dance.” He gave his stunned love no chance to protest or walk back as he pulled him close even as he spoke and began dancing. He laughed at seeing the cumulating shock in Erestor’s eyes. “You’ve always stayed by my side, Erestor. The least I can do is give you a few dances.” He shook his head at the calculating look. “Stop trying to understand or figure it out. Just let it happen.” He leaned in close to whisper in his ear, not risking others to hear just yet. “I love you.”
Erestor smiled at those words and did as Elrond suggested. He enjoyed it.
Elladan grinned and hugged his brother from behind. “Don’t they make the perfect couple?”
Elrohir nodded and leaned into the embrace. “I think we shall have to step in more than before, Dan.”
Elladan nodded. “I don’t mind.” He smiled at Glorfindel, but kept his tease inside, knowing his brother wasn’t ready for that yet.
The seneschal smiled. “The Prince looks rather lost, Elladan. You should go to him. You’re his host.”
Elladan snorted. “Adar is the host, but aye, I shall go to him. I don’t want to disturb Erestor’s fun.” He left snickering and his eyes blinked when he saw Elrohir instantly drag the blond to the dance floor. Someone would get sore feet this eve.
As he approached Legolas he could see the joy in the blond’s eyes and felt a little guilty at leaving him to his own devices. “Legolas.”
Legolas was extremely pleased to see a familiar face. These Imladrian elves were extremely fond of feasts and he had already been clamped by several strangers. He felt Elladan’s presence would protect him from that. Feeling an arm on his lower back made him lose hope and he groaned.
Elladan frowned when he heard that, but soon realised what was happening and he pushed the cheeky elf away. “Unless you’ve drank the entire table you can still have some decorum. You shame your realm behaving like that.”
The unfocused eyes settled on him in wonder. Elladan winced as he heard the slurred speech and he motioned two soldiers closer. “Please see Vorndir to an empty guestroom where he can sleep off the alcohol.”
The soldiers shook their head and dragged him along.
Elladan sighed and refocused his attention on Legolas. “You can slap them in the face, you know.” He placed an arm around Legolas. “I guess it is best to show you off as mine. Not even drunk would they dare to piss me off.”
Legolas laughed and allowed it, not really looking forward to more harassment and it gave him the perfect opportunity to flirt with him and find out where he stood without risking anything.
Haldir inhaled deeply after downing his drink in one go. There was no use in stalling any longer. Celeborn had already stated that without reasons to go Haldir would have to go back to his station at the borders and that the delivery days were over. Not that he minded life at the border, but the problem was that it meant never seeing Imladris again and thus -his- face. And that was more than he could bare and the thought alone was enough to make him determined to find out if he had a chance. Even if he got rejected and humiliated tonight, no one would be able to laugh about it at the borders.
“Melpomean.”
The secretary turned and then relaxed visibly when seeing Haldir. “You could scare someone to death, doing a thing like that.”
Haldir smirked. “And there I am fighting the orcs when I could be killing them like this.” His eyes filled with mirth and he grabbed two glasses from a passing tray, immediately handing one to the other elf. “Sukam!” (a toast)
Melpomean’s anger faded as he realised the other had been joking; it hadn’t been a nasty remark at all. He softly touched Haldir’s glass before taking a sip. “Thank you for stepping in.”
Haldir shrugged. “It’s all right. I just hope I haven’t made a mess of Glorfindel’s system. Good thing I am supposed to return tomorrow. Not even he is liable to hunt me to another realm.”
Melpomean widened his eyes in shock but soon had himself under control again. Should he ask? Looking around he saw Erestor dancing with Elrond and Glorfindel suffering yet another dance with the younger twin and he was loathe to disturb them. But how could he ask it and remain polite and diplomatic?
Haldir had now cocked his head, contemplating whether or not he was boring the other.
Melpomean turned to him again and smiled sadly. “Lord Celeborn must miss your skills.”
Now Haldir was truly worried. Did this imply he should go as soon as possible and thus leave the secretary’s sight? He inwardly growled. Why did he hope at all? He shrugged. “No more than usual.”
Melpomean nodded. “Could he spare you a little longer?” Seeing Haldir spit out the just consumed liquid, he frowned. When the green eyes looked at him they carried a emotion Melpomean had never seen before and he found it fascinating. This certainly demanded some thought later. But not now.
Haldir had found himself back and was relieved he managed not to goggle at the secretary, though he did wonder what precisely this meant. Deciding it was safest to take his cue from the other elf he smiled. “That would depend on the reason for my prolonged stay.”
Melpomean nodded, not sure whether to feel sad or angry. Surely Lord Celeborn wouldn’t mind if Haldir took on Glorfindel’s duties a little longer.
Now that Melpomean remained silent Haldir felt his nerves nearly break him and he inhaled deep to try and calm them. “Why are you asking?” Could he really be so lucky?
Melpomean’s lips tightened and he shook his head. If Haldir had no desire to aid them anymore than he wouldn’t stop him for fleeing back. “Never mind, Warden. May Varda protect you on your road.” He bowed and swiftly left the scene. What had he been thinking?
He was unaware he left a thoroughly confused Haldir behind, who did not know what to make of him.
Haldir smiled when he saw Glorfindel and Elrohir walk his way and bowed to show his respect.
Elrohir smiled warmly. “Haldir. We owe you so much.” Without warning he hugged him, stunning the normally level-headed warrior further.
Glorfindel snickered at the shocked eyes, but then his face showed his concern. It wasn’t normal for Haldir to show his emotions so openly. “Is something wrong?”
Haldir shook his head and composed himself. “I don’t know, Glorfindel. I honestly don’t know.” Involuntarily his eyes darted to where he had seen the secretary depart.
Elrohir smiled, looking expectantly at the blond. “Would you mind awfully to take Glorfindel’s job a little longer? Please?”
Haldir’s head snapped at him at alarming rate and Elrohir jumped backwards, seeking the safety of Glorfindel’s protection, who smiled fondly at the action. He kept his gaze on Haldir though as he started to explain his need to revenge Elladan. After hearing everything Haldir understood and smiled. “It would be my honour to fill your shoes for some more days, Glorfindel.”
Sadness overwhelmed him as he suddenly realised that this was what Melpomean had meant. There were no personal reasons involved. He sighed. Why would there be?
His behaviour worried Glorfindel, who narrowed his eyes. “Haldir?”
The warrior smiled warmly. “Nothing. I just figured out what Melpomean was talking about.”
Elrohir laughed warmly, hugging Haldir once more. Glorfindel whispered in his ear and he nodded. He would keep Haldir company for a while. To his bemusement he found the warrior expertly steering the conversation towards Melpomean every time. And it wasn’t until Glorfindel fetched him that he realised.
Legolas laughed as Elladan dragged him out the room. “Elladan! Your father!”
Elladan shrugged. “He will just scold me for acting like a child. Come on, brothers get each other into trouble all the time.” He laughed when he saw Legolas’ look changed between joy and horror. “Come, the view from the precipice is best at night time. Or are you cold?”
Legolas smiled warmly at his concern and shook his head. “Nay. It would not be well for me if I were. Do you feel the cold, then?”
Elladan nodded. “Aye. We feel the cold, though it doesn’t affect us if we take care.” He pulled at his cloak. “This fabric is thicker than yours, probably what you would wear in winter, I suppose.”
Legolas felt it and cocked his head. “A bit.” He was learning so much. And he liked spending time with Elladan. His further protests were merely for show and only half-hearted.
But he found the twin hadn’t exaggerated when he told him how wonderful the view was. He stood in silent admiration for what must have been minutes before he realised he wasn’t alone up here. Turning to apologize he saw the twin sitting on the ground, patiently waiting for him to join him in his own time. It made him smile and he plunged down beside him. “There won’t be many things able to compete with this. I am glad you showed me, Elladan.”
Elladan remained silent and merely nodded his approval.
Chapter nine Trouble may be afoot
Erestor looked at Elrond with barely contained surprise. The Peredhel had been acting quite differently from the Elrond he had gotten to know. Elrond unexpectedly reached out and pulled him close, placing a teasing kiss on his nose.
“I never dared tell you how I feel for you, Erestor, for I feared your rejection.”
Erestor’s eyes went wide. “Reject you? How can I?”
Elrond smiled and pressed even closer, adoring to feel him this close. “I did not know you love me just as much, meleth.”
If Elrond hadn’t had such a tight hold on him Erestor would have swayed at hearing that. Now he merely looked at him. Oh, but those lips looked tempting.
Seeing Erestor’s desire and knowing his real need Elrond minutely closed the distance but didn’t close it entirely. He wanted Erestor to do that. And he did albeit a bit hesitant. Elrond eagerly parted first his lips and then his teeth, granting Erestor easy access and allowed him full control. He wanted Erestor to be in control. There was enough time for duelling and rough play when the counsellor was healed in mind. For now he melted in Erestor’s embrace.
When Erestor applied a little pressure Elrond walked backwards until he hit his bed. Instead of breaking the kiss he looked into his lovers eyes and, seeing the raw need in them, his heart fluttered madly and he felt a fire spread throughout his body. He hoped Erestor wouldn’t back out. Feeling Erestor try to move closer still he let himself fall backwards on the bed, pulling Erestor along with him. The startled yelp Erestor released vibrated in their mouths, heightening their pleasure and need.
Overcome by this sudden urge Erestor all but tore the clothes from their bodies. He was achingly hard himself and seeing Elrond in all his glory made him twitch in anticipation. But his rational thought kicked in, telling him he had no experience in this matter, but he knew Elrond did.
The Peredhel was already reaching for the oil on his bed stand, but when he saw Erestor was about to pull back and flee he swiftly turned them around and straddled Erestor. “What is wrong? Do you suddenly fear me? Yourself?”
His eyes showed true desire to understand and Erestor reached out to caress his face. He adored Elrond for his care and concern. “I love you.”
Elrond smiled and leaned into the caress. “And I love you.” He cocked his head. “Is that it? Are you afraid I’ll stop loving you?” His voice sounded disbelieving and Elrond did have trouble believing it, but he now knew Erestor’s mind and therefore knew it was a distinct possibility.
Erestor gasped and shook his head. “Nay. I can see the depth of your love. This isn’t lust. I -can- separate between the two, Elrond.” He snorted but then closed his head. “I have no knowledge on how to continue. I want you but….” He shrugged. “I should read up, I guess.”
Hearing Elrond laugh was the last thing he expected in response and he looked at the other in shock.
Elrond shook his head and stretched atop his love, loving the fact Erestor bucked at little in response. “I’m not all that experienced myself, melme. But aye, I do know what to do. Will you let me show you?” Erestor’s fear was palpable and it surprised Elrond to see him nod. But it also warmed his heart to know just how deep Erestor’s trust in him ran.
Sitting back up he took a good look at Erestor’s member, needing to know whether or not to prepare himself. He smiled deviously and grabbed the oil.
Erestor gasped when he felt the cool liquid flow over his member just before Elrond’s hand rubbed it. “Ai, Elrond.”
Elrond merely smiled and leaned in to deliver a soft kiss on the already weeping head. “I can tell your real need, my love, and I shall make sure you get it.”
Erestor looked at him in surprise before he gasped as he saw Elrond raise himself and position himself above him. His fear only grew. He did not wish to hurt Elrond.
But Elrond caught his gaze and kept it locked.
The ruler slowly lowered himself and hissed as he was breached for the first time in millennia. He had missed this feeling.
Erestor grew rigid, so afraid was he to cause his beloved pain. Why was Elrond doing this?
Elrond eyes, open once more, read the silent questions and the half-elf smiled. “I want you to experience this. I want you to see that there is no pain. I love you.”
Erestor seemed not to understand. Aye, he could see Elrond reasoning, but he couldn’t believe the other felt no pain.
Elrond smiled. “A little discomfort that will go away once we move. And aye, I will be sore tomorrow, but it will be a good pain for it’ll remind me of this feeling. You have no idea how it feels to feel you inside me, Erestor.” He licked his lips and inhaled deep as he felt Erestor’s response to that. He believed Erestor would turn out to be extremely dominant and insatiable once he was over his fear. Just the type of lover he wanted.
He smiled adoringly when Erestor raised his legs so he could lean against them. “Always thinking of me, aren’t you?” He grinned at the blush that came to life through the already flustered features.
Slowly Elrond started a nice rhythm. He didn’t want them to come to soon, but wanted it to last.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Melpomean frowned when his door got ruffled upon. Who would be disturbing his rest? Who would dare? All knew not even Elrond dared wake him.
He flung the door open and glared furiously. “Get lost!” Seeing Haldir jump back made his frown deepen and he suddenly realised he did not yet ponder the enigma that was Haldir. He cocked his head, awaiting the words of apology.
Haldir sighed and smiled. “I’m sorry for waking you, but I dared not go to Elrond or Erestor with this and you are their secretary.” He swiftly looked down but then looked the other straight in the eye. “Orcs have sighted near our border and their numbers are slowly increasing. We cannot rule out a possible attempt at the house. I am going immediately, to see what I can find out, but I also need to be sure preparations are made to face them, should they attack.”
Melpomean’s anger flared up, but this time he didn’t release it at the poor soul that woke him up. He grabbed his armour and marched away, dressing him and dragging Haldir along at the same time.
He knocked and entered the captain’s rooms without hesitation. Both Glorfindel and Elrohir blinked sleepily at him. Melpomean curtly nodded and smiled when he saw realisation set in with Glorfindel, who instantly jumped out bed, reaching for his own weapons.
Melpomean shook his head. “Haldir informed me there are orcs gathering near our borders. We are going to spy on them. You prepare our defence and make sure those that cannot fight are safe.”
Elrohir flared up as well. “Dan has taken Legolas to the precipice. Should I…?”
Melpomean nodded. “That would be best. And would you tell Erestor and your father, pen-neth. He’s not very likely to ride out if you are the one delivering the news.”
Elrohir smirked and nodded. “And I think we can trust Erestor to keep his mind occupied. It is fortunate we have some Mirkwood soldiers on our soil at the moment, though.”
Melpomean turned and marched out, once more dragging Haldir along.
The warrior finally got himself over his multiple shock and pulled back, forcing the secretary to come to a sudden stop. “You can’t be serious!”
Melpomean rolled his eyes and crossed his arms. “You should not go alone.”
Haldir growled softly and considered tying the other down.
Seeing the concern stilled Melpomean’s hateful words and he centred himself. “I have lived through Gondolin, the Last Alliance and the fields of Pelennor. Come now, we shall see what those things are planning.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Elrohir dashed through the corridors and ran inside his father’s room without knocking. This was important. “Adar!” His eyes widened when he saw his father riding Erestor.
Erestor yelped his name and Elrohir jumped up in shock. Oh, this wasn’t good. His father would make him pay for this.
Elrond held a comical expression on his face at hearing his son’s name from Erestor’s lips but when he saw his lover’s attention elsewhere he realised they had company. His head snapped sideways and he was grateful he was already heated, for that prevented his blush from showing. “Out!”
Elrohir’s eyes were glued to the scene. He had known Elrond and Erestor were in love but he hadn’t expected his father to be on the receiving end. How could he enjoy that when he had known extreme joy with Celebrian?
Seeing Elrond about to explode at Elrohir made Erestor reach out and he gently forced his love to face him, making sure Elrohir was out of his side. He kept his gaze locked even as he addressed the twin. “Can it wait, Elrohir? Or go to Glorfindel?”
Elrohir blushed at the mention of the blond’s name and instantly he saw Glorfindel and himself before him instead of the two dark-haired elves.
From the corner of his eye Erestor saw the rising blush and smiled. He could feel Elrond’s anger evaporate a little and one hand stole towards the Peredhel’s member, looking for ways to make him forget completely. “Well?”
Elrond closed his eyes as he felt his lover touch him. It send shivers all over him. Before he knew it he had come and come hard.
Erestor widened his eyes and gasped, not sure what was happening. “Elrond…. What…. Oh my…” Unwillingly he bucked hard, almost sending Elrond of off him and he tightened his hold on his lover as he came deep inside him.
Spent the Peredhel collapsed on top of his lover, hissing when the connection was lost as the movement forced Erestor to leave his body. Erestor reacted by pulling him close and holding him.
Elrohir’s eyes were wide beyond believe and seeing his father climax due to Erestor made him feel weird. He realised he should go. “Eh…Oh… Ehm… wait… I’ll…. It’ll wait… wait…” He dashed out the room and ran outside. He didn’t stop running until he stood before the precipice. He needed his twin right now. /Ooooo, what if I interrupt there too?/ He wasn’t sure he could handle that. “DAN! Elladan!!! Legolas!!! Are you up there?” That would prevent it!
Not soon after two silhouettes came down the path and Elrohir smiled as he saw his twin.
Sensing his upset state Elladan sped up and pulled Elrohir close. “By the Valar, what is wrong?” His anger flared and if he wasn’t holding his twin right now he would march to Glorfindel and demand an explanation.
Seeing Legolas afraid to move closer Elrohir pulled back and wiped at his tears. “Haldir fears an orc-raid might be eminent.”
Legolas now did come closer and his eyes were shocked. How dare anything consider attacking Imladris. He grabbed Elrohir’s shoulder and squished it. “My archers and I will help fight them, Elrohir. They will not succeed.” They’ve faced this problem before and he felt grateful they were here to offer assistance.
Elladan smiled warmly but his soon looked at his twin again. “And now tell me why you are spooked. Orcs never managed to do so. Or is this because of what happened to adar?”
Elrohir blushed and lowered his head, but wasn’t fast enough.
Legolas had seen his look and recognized it. So he had been right! Elrond and Erestor were an item. “Don’t worry about it. They should have locked the door.”
He placed his arm around Elrohir’s shoulder and steered him towards the manor. “Come. Let us retire to a room.” His eyes twinkled and he looked at Elladan. “Do you possess an instrument?”
Elladan frowned but nodded. “Aye. I play the flute and Ro has mastered the harp. Why do you ask?”
Legolas now looked at Elrohir. “If you play the harp I shall sing.”
Elrohir had a mind to protest but he swallowed it inside when he saw Elladan’s hopeful expression. “All right. We look forward to hearing you sing.”
Chapter ten eavesdropping
Haldir was pleased Melpomean moved so soundlessly, for he feared being unable to protect him if things got out of hand. He didn’t think he would survive at all. There were just too many of them. He dared not come closer and strained his hearing to the maximum. Feeling a hand on his shoulder made him gasp and he once more blessed being out of hearing range.
Melpomean moved beside the warden. He understood why they could go no further. But he could not try and read their lips if Haldir’s torso was blocking his view.
After some minutes he knew enough and motioned for Haldir to follow him back.
The warrior nodded and silently followed him through the trees.
Once they were sure none of the foul creatures could detect it they jumped down and both released relieved sighs. Haldir never liked these missions, but they had to be done. “Well, at least we know that it is going to happen. They’re too many of them to be a rampage.”
Melpomean nodded. “Aye. They are planning to attack in three days time. At this border. But I thought I also saw them talking about the other border.” He shook his head. “I do not like it. Are they planning to attack us at two fronts?”
He fearfully looked at Haldir and the warrior nodded. “Aye. They might very well be planning that. The orcs that nearly captured Lord Elrond must have been a scouting troop.” He sighed deeply. “The only ones close enough are the people from Gadion and the Dwarves from the dale.” He snickered. “Can you imagine a Dwarven city hidden under the soil of the dale?”
Melpomean smiled and shook his head. “Nay, I cannot.” But he didn’t like hearing they could not expect aid. “We should evacuate and send for messages by bird.”
Haldir shook his head. “Nay. That will let them know we know and then precious time to counter them is lost. But perhaps Lord Elrond can contact my lord and lady mentally? And Prince Legolas can surely contact his father for aid. It might not arrive in time to aid us, but it will arrive in time to avenge us.”
Suddenly there was a growl above them and Haldir pulled Melpomean close, raising his sword. Four orcs jumped down and smiled devilishly at them. “You will not tell for you will be death.”
Haldir narrowed his eyes, preparing for the battle. He didn’t waste any time answering them.
Instantly the four of them charged simultaneous and Haldir and Melpomean had to block two blows each.
Their enemies soon discovered Melpomean was the better of them and three of them focused on Haldir, letting their comrade keep the other one occupied. They would kill the blond one first.
Haldir realised the peril he was in but was unable to do anything about it. These guys had been improving their skills for he had never encountered such ferocious orcs before. But he would not die without wearing them down. “Go!”
But Melpomean refused and manoeuvred closer.
Haldir understood and tried to move towards him. Only fighting back to back did they have a chance, but before he could complete his intentions a sword embedded itself in his side. He hadn’t seen it coming as he was busy blocking two others and at least four daggers. He screamed in pain and planted his own dagger in the orc closest in retaliation.
“Haldir!” Melpomean glanced beside him and saw Haldir dropping to his knees, succumbing to the wounds. No, this couldn’t happen. Not Haldir. /A warrior like you doesn’t deserve to die like this./ He released an ancient battle cry, one he hadn’t uttered since Gondolin and charged in full force, moving the creatures away from Haldir.
He used his foot to take possession of Haldir’s sword and now he could really start fighting. He no longer defended anymore, he was fighting to kill and he wanted to kill them fast for he needed to get Haldir to the healers before the poison could spread throughout his body. But he made sure not to leave his position over Haldir’s now unconscious body.
Suddenly arrows planted themselves in the orcen necks and they dropped to the floor with loud shrieks. In a trance Melpomean saw the twins and Legolas ride closer, accompanied by three Mirkwood archers.
Legolas swiftly jumped off his horse. “Here, get on, take Haldir to the healing house.”
Melpomean jumped on, but wavered as he accepted Haldir. He couldn’t let Legolas walk home. Even if he was escorted, it wasn’t proper.
Elladan smirked. He knew the secretary was more for protocol than even Erestor was and grabbed Legolas without warning, pulling him on his own horse. “Legolas shall ride with me. Now come on. Tell us what you found out on the way.” None but Meleor noticed the look that passed over the Prince’s features as he suddenly felt Elladan’s body so close.
The party moved away at great speed. Melpomean told Elladan what they learned.
Legolas growled. He did not like that. “Doesn’t your father employ spies, Elladan?”
Elrohir nodded, answering for his brother. “Aye, why?”
“Then they can help. Surely reaching them does not require the normal way, does it? And I do think we should send aid. Three days….”
Meleor inhaled deeply. This was bad, real bad. But suddenly he cleared. “How many are there?”
Melpomean glared at him but then his face cleared up. “Only five hundred. But they are at the opposite border as well, maybe even all borders.”
But Meleor shook his head. “Nay. You would have found out if there was increased activity in those areas. I do believe they gave a little show for you two. We should prepare an army and charge them now. They do not expect that.”
Elladan smiled. This one had a nose for mazes. Already did he find a way to turn defeat to possible victory. And he realised the warrior was right. Even if his father had been a cat, he would still have sensed the threat and would have warned them. Thus, those ocs had to be the only ones.
Meleor smirked. “Our archers and your knowledge of terrain. A good combination if you ask me.”
Elladan yelped when he remembered something from one of the hunts. “Mel, did you say they were at the hidden vale?”
Melpomean nodded, his anxiety lessening now that the house was coming closer. Elladan smirked. “We could defeat them without a fight.”
It took Melpomean two seconds to understand but then he grinned madly, nodding. “Aye, we can. We should make sure that there are no others though. And the village needs to know.”
Elrohir nodded. “I shall send spies to see, protected by two soldiers.”
Legolas grinned, catching on. “Imladrian and Mirkwood. And what will we do?”
Elladan squished the arm that had encircled his waist, even though a rider of Legolas’ calibre didn’t need the extra hold, but he didn’t mind or question it. “We shall warn the village and tonight we shall break the dam. Release the Amrúsir (deafening river) to its full potential.”
Elrohir smiled at Legolas’ non-understanding face. “It’s a side river of the Bruinen but much more dangerous so before elves settled here adar had it dammed and led around.”
Meleor nodded. “Let me guess. Their campsite is its normal path?” He knew that if the river was allowed it’s normal path again it would take it with enthusiasm and the darkness would provide for cover, making sure a multitude of orcs would die in that tidal wave.
By now they had reached the courtyard and Melpomean steared the horse towards the healing house, already screaming for healers. Elrond stuck his head out and gasped when he saw what was happening. “Meleor, go to my study!” Things needed to be discussed.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Melpomean fidgeted now that he’s delivered Haldir to the healers. He should leave now, but he was reluctant to do so. What was it with that annoying warrior that kept him captivated?
Elrond dashed inside and nodded at his healers, who were already working top speed. He would stay and step in if necessary, but he didn’t think it was. He pulled Melpomean towards a bench and smiled. “Why did you not come to me instead?”
Melpomean looked at him in anger, but Elrond knew him well enough to know he wasn’t the real recipient of that glare.
The secretary shrugged. “I needed to stay with Haldir. He planned on spying on them alone. I send Elrohir to you.”
Elrond grinned and blushed. “He came. But his timing could have been better.” He grinned as Melpomean’s puzzled look changed to a understanding look. Elrond shrugged. “He entered without knocking.” He still felt amazed by Erestor’s action, but he would cherish the memory forever. It proved how deep their love really ran. If he could forget anything else…
He shook his head to clear it and focused on Melpomean again. “He left and I don’t think we heard his message, if he delivered it at all.” He smirked. “Glorfindel knocked five minutes afterwards. We were informed and I decided to send some warriors after you.” He grabbed Melpomean’s hand. “Don’t you know I’m connected to these lands. There are many orcs in the hidden valley, but that’s no problem. In fact, they’re precisely where I want them to be.”
Melpomean grinned. “Elladan said something like that.”
Elrond smiled affectionately. “I knew he was smart. Erestor already warned the village.”
Melpomean narrowed his eyes. “But they said something about the other borders. And that they’ll attack in three days time.”
Elrond shook his head. “Three months. Gandalf contacted me some days prior to my disappearance. He learned of their plan and I decided to make sure the orcs took the hidden vale as their hide out.” He smirked. “I hadn’t counted on the first batch being here so swift already though.” He looked at his secretary and understood the stunned expression. Erestor hadn’t exactly been pleased when he learned either and Glorfindel told him in no misunderstanding terms he would not speak to the Peredhel for a while.
Elrond shrugged and stood, approaching the bed. He needed to be sure there was no shard left or poison still in his system. The third batch of Athelas was now applied and Elrond smiled at the speed the herbs absorbed the poison. He nodded and smiled at Melpomean. “He’ll come through. I expect him to wake within some hours already.” He smirked at the carefully hidden desire and motioned for the elf to come closer. “Stay by his side for me and alert me should anything happen. I have to make sure the damage the river causes is fixable.”
He left and Melpomean was now alone with Haldir and the healers, who worked around him. He didn’t even realise Elrond had seen his desire, so shaken was he.
Soon only one healer attended to the wounded elf. “There, he’s set for now. Would you like something to drink or eat?”
Melpomean shook his head. He couldn’t eat anything right now.
Now that he was alone he finally allowed himself to face the fact. He was in love with Haldir. Seeing the warrior go down had hurt deep and he had seen enough friends fall to know he had felt something new this day.
