Chapter one Do the riming
Part one : fair is foul and foul is fair
Legolas leaned against the balustrade and looked out over the treetops without seeing anything. Nothing ever changed in his father’s house, or even his realm and after two millennia Legolas knew it all. He was extremely bored with it and didn’t know how to fill his time.
Although Thranduil suggested the patrols Legolas didn’t, knowing those would be even worse. Nothing happened, no orcs, no travellers, no nothing. Although it was good for the realm that the patrols were so uneventful it was extremely boring.
He sighed and stepped back, turned and continued his pointless walk through the corridors. He smiled weakly when he found his feet had carried him to the library and he shook his head. /I’ve read enough already this month, dear feet. Not today./
He walked on, not really caring where he ended up.
After some minutes his eyes widened when he realised he was walking in unfamiliar passages. How could that be? He thought he knew them all by now. His fire for exploration kindled he walked on, eagerly looking around him, taking all this new visions in.
He came to a door and carefully opened it. Only when he knew no one was around or inside the room did he enter it and carefully examined it. He found artefacts from times long gone and was amazed his father had them and he decided to ask him how they got there.
His attention was drawn to some old books and he started leaving through them, hoping some would be on Lindon. He had always loved the tales about Lindon, but his father didn’t know so much and the ones that did refused to talk about it.
Several books had to be abandoned for he couldn’t even hope to decipher them, but one proved readable and he placed it upon a stand to study it better. The pages had turned yellow and the signs were faded.
Legolas was sure his elven vision was the only reason he could see them.
After carefully flipping some pages he realised it was some sort of magician’s book. /I should let Gandalf take a look at it./
His eyes fell upon a beautiful drawing but he couldn’t make out what it was. To get some more information he read the text that belonged with it. After a few attempts he growled in frustration. /Come on, Legolas, you can do this/ He smiled and his face lit up when he remembered the old teachings of his tutors to read out loud if he couldn’t see it. And so he did just that.

Thranduil frowned when his chief advisor ran in without knocking. One look told him the elf was exhausted and he stood to pour the man a glass of water.
The counsellor waved it away and pointed to the door behind him.
Thranduil grinned. “What is it, gwador, is the realm being invaded?”
The counsellor shook his head. “Legolas. He’s missing. I can’t find him anywhere.”
Thranduil shrugged. “You know he wanders around aimlessly and endlessly. But he’ll turn up for dinner on his own.”
The counsellor nodded and sighed. He stood and hung his head as he walked away, realising he once again couldn’t entice the Prince to dress up. Perhaps he could make him eat in the kitchen and away from the Lorien party? He hoped so.
Suddenly he stopped in his tracks and gasped.
Thranduil frowned at the strange behaviour, especially when the other suddenly ran off at top speed. He didn’t waste time and followed him.
Before long they had reached the back off corridors and Thranduil saw the old library door standing open. “Guards!” He didn’t want a thieve to walk away without a fight.
He bumped straight into his counsellor when the elf stopped dead in the door opening, his hand covering his mouth in shock.
Thranduil dashed inside and kneeled besides his unconscious son. One look around told him there had been no battle. Seeing a book open on the stand he pointed at it. “Take it with you and mark that page. And See if you can find Gandalf.”
The counsellor nodded and hurried to carry out his command. He was glad with an occupation.

Part two : up and away, through time and air
Legolas blinked and turned around. “Well, I am not in Mirkwood anymore.” He just didn’t know if that was good thing or a bad. For if he wasn’t in Mirkwood, then where? The surroundings didn’t look familiar to him at all.
Seeing rock he decided to climb it; it would provide a better view of his surroundings and maybe provide some answers. He ran and easily climbed it swiftly.
He was stunned at the beautiful view it offered and took in everything he saw whilst slowly turning. When he had done a 360o turn he gasped and twirled round, his eyes widening as he gazed at the city before him. He’s seen enough pictures to know it was Lindon.
He brought his arm up and pinched himself, yelping. /I felt that! But how can this be anything but a dream?/
As if in a trance he started walking and his feet carried him closer to the legendary city. No one stopped him from entering it and he looked around in amazement, still not fully believing he was here.
Suddenly he stood frozen to the spot, shaking his head and pulling his hair. /Nay, this cannot be happening. That isn’t me!/
Again he pulled his hair. It hurt.
He stared at his reflection in disbelief.
That was not his body and most definitely not his hair.
Stepping closer and frowned. His eyes had also changed. He now was a black-haired elf, raven he thought, and his eyes had become light green, not the bright blue he was used to seeing. He was so absorbed in studying himself he forgot all else around him.

Elrond smiled and shook his head at the antics his two best friends displayed. “Really, Ereinion, you shouldn’t encourage him.”
Erestor threw him his most innocent look. “We’re merely trying to make you happy, Elrond.”
Elrond crossed his arms before his chest and did his best to look stern. “I don’t know why? I still hate it here.” Even though those words had once been spiteful and filled with hatred, they no longer held any of those feelings and Gil-Galad laughed warmly, coming to stand beside him. “You know you like it, Elrond. Don’t pretend you don’t.”
He embraced him and stepped out on the open corridor. “Why don’t you go out for a ride, meldir?”
Elrond shook his head. “Nay. New herbs are arriving and I need to examine them.” His eyes twinkled brightly and he turned before running away.
Gil-Galad grinned, but he halted everything when he saw a strange elf acting most peculiar. /Who is he?/ He swiftly walked forward and cocked his head at the weird elf. “Mae govannen. What brings you to Lindon?”
Legolas twirled round and gaped at the king of the city, a legend himself. He quickly composed himself and bowed. “Greetings, Gil-Galad, High-King of all elves. It is a honour to finally meet.”
Gil-Galad frowned. Whoever the elf was, he was well trained in diplomatic skills.
Legolas bit his lip and thought quickly. He couldn’t possibly give the king his own name. Especially not if Elrond would find out. He didn’t know what it would do for the future. He smiled, having found a name for himself, the one his mother always used. “My name is Hendubeth. I would be honour if you would allow me to remain here.”
Gil-Galad smiled, liking the strange elf. “Well met, Hendubeth. Aye, why wouldn’t you be able to stay here? Walk around a bit and I shall send someone to bring you to your rooms later.”
Legolas bowed and couldn’t help but stare at the retreating king. His tongue practically burned with the yearning to speak, but he wisely held it in, knowing he couldn’t do anything to change the timeline. /How will I get back? Will I ever get back?/ Right there and then he decided to continue practising his skills and protect Elrond. He couldn’t change the timeline but he wouldn’t be doing that if he helped keep Elrond safe.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Elrond looked up when Gil-Galad entered the house of healing. The king grinned at his look. “I’ve come to fetch you. We’ve got a guest and I would ask you to take a look at him from a distance. Erestor shall guide him to his rooms.”
Elrond nodded, followed and listened to strange tale.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Legolas smiled when he saw a somewhat familiar elf walk towards him and he swiftly bowed. “Mae govannen. Im Hendubeth.”
Erestor smiled, instantly liking their latest guest. He bowed as well. “Welcome to Lindon. My name is Erestor, counsellor to the king. He asked me to bring you to your room.”
Legolas smiled. “Thank you, counsellor.” He obediently followed, still marvelling about the place he was in, and the time he was in.
Above them two pairs of eyes followed them and Gil-Galad smiled at the glow that had sprung to life in Elrond’s eyes. /Hmmm. I shall have to find a way to make that one linger here. Perhaps a job or something…/
Slowly a plan came to life in his mind. He didn’t have a single hesitation about meddling in his cousin’s life a little to make him happy.

Chapter two My tensesense is off
Legolas stretched as he awoke, instantly jolting up in shock and fear before he groaned in agony. /It wasn’t a bad dream after all./
He stood and watched himself in the mirror. He released another groan as he found that to be cruel reality as well.
He sighed. /I shall have to be extremely careful. I cannot disrupt the timeline and since Erestor will once know me…/
He undressed himself, eager to see more of his new body and once naked he cocked his head, finding it almost identical to his own, to the one he normally inhabited, though this one was a bit more tanned. But it brought a smile to his face, none the less.
He was so absorbed in thought he didn’t hear the knocks on his door. He didn’t even hear it softly open.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Gil-Galad had to force his smile off his face; he didn’t want to alert Elrond nor did he want Erestor to find out, who would undoubtedly side with Elrond.
He perfectly schooled his features and entered his friend’s study. “Good morn, meldir.”
Elrond frowned at his sudden and most unannounced appearance. He hoped his eyes didn’t betray his previous thoughts.
Gil-Galad smiled. “It’s near time for breakfast and I was hoping you would fetch our guest.” Elrond cocked his head in suspicion and Gil-Galad hastily explained. “He’s new here and asked me, well, Erestor to be precise, to become part of the household. For that I need to know more of him and you know I value your opinion. We could see how he does during breakfast and assign him somewhere.”
Elrond nodded and stood.
He swiftly walked to the right rooms and knocked. Not receiving an answer he silently opened the door, figuring the inhabitant was still dozing. His eyes widened when he saw the elf standing in front of the mirror, obviously admiring his own body.
He gasped and almost drooled at the sight. /There’s a lot to be admired./
“By the Valar…” It were his own thoughts more than the image that jolted the exclamation and he swiftly turned and did his best to cover up his blush.
Legolas jumped and twirled round as well, reaching for his weapon before grabbing a sheet. He smiled at the flustered elf in the door opening. “I am sorry. I did not hear you knock.”
Elrond swallowed deep and nodded. “I thought you were still asleep when there wasn’t an answer and….” He swallowed again. “Gil-Galad sent me to bring you to breakfast.”
Legolas smiled. “May I dress first? I do not wish to appear clad in only a sheet.”
Elrond blushed again, nodded and hastily left the room, stating he would wait outside.
Legolas grinned and hastily dressed himself. /Apparently I made an impression. True, my body is good looking, but I do think it is the added colour…/
He smiled and left his room. “My name is Hindubeth.”
Elrond smiled and accepted the hand, shaking it. “I’m Elrond Peredhel.” He noticed the gasp and shock on the other’s face and saddened.
They swiftly made it and Gil-Galad smiled as they walked in. “Ah, my honoured guest, welcome, be seated.”
Legolas smiled when he noticed it gave him a change to study the Peredhel. He had never expected that to be Elrond. The elf was completely different from the one he knew. Staring at the object of his thoughts he wondered why, moulding the information in his head. He decided it wasn’t so much wisdom but sadness that was responsible for that. /Mount Doom?/
Erestor frowned at the unembarrassed attention the new elf was giving Elrond, but what shocked him the most was Gil-Galad’s smile at noticing this. He narrowed his eyes and looked at his king.
Gil-Galad locked his eyes and nodded. They would talk, later.
He cleared his throat. “I hear you can fight?”
Legolas had to shake himself out of his trance and nodded. “Aye, sire. I would be honoured to join your army and fight against evil.” Seeing all the eyebrows go up he wondered if he had made a mistake.
Gil-Galad grinned. “Slay the occasional orc, you mean? Aye, of course.” He smiled and stood. “I shall spar you myself in a few hours. First I need to talk to my counsellor. Erestor?”
Erestor nodded, stood and followed him out.
Legolas turned his attention on Elrond again. “Would you then please tell me where he expects me to spar?”
Elrond nodded, standing swiftly to avoid his eyes.
Legolas wondered about his behaviour. /Probably about this morn. I would be flustered too had I walked in on him./
He gasped in awe at the large practise area Elrond has lead him too and he looked around in amazement. “I’ve never seen anything like this. It’s amazing.”
Elrond nodded and left.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Once in the privacy of the study Gil-Galad locked eyes with Erestor. “Send some spies. I want to know Sauron’s movements.”
Erestor’s eyes darkened in understanding. “You fear he’s responsible for the lack in communication? I shall make work of it.”
Gil-Galad nodded. “And don’t intervene. I know what I am doing. Elrond needs to be happy and he likes our guest.”
Erestor closed his eyes and shook his head. “What are you going to do?” Hearing the chuckle his eyes flashed open and Erestor settled them on Gil-Galad in disbelief. “No, you can’t!”
The other shrugged. “If I let it up to Elrond, it’ll never happen and I don’t want to see what the other one is like. He’s clearly interested and Elrond and he need to spend time together. A lot of time.” He shrugged again and smiled. “Besides, I am not going to injure him that badly. Just a scratch or so, enough to send him to a healer and as a guest he should receive the best of care.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Legolas jumped up when he heard the king approach and he smiled in adoration when he saw the weapons gear so often depicted.
Gil-Galad smiled. “I hope you are ready to be judged?”
Legolas nodded. “Though I do not possess a shield, sire.”
Gil-Galad nodded. “I shall take that into consideration.” He waited for the other to launch and was secretly surprised at the strength behind it.
Legolas narrowed his eyes as he found it difficult to strike, not wanting to break the sword on the shield. He decided on a different tactic and jumped backwards whenever Gil-Galad attacked, easily avoiding the strokes. He slowly manoeuvred them towards the surrounding trees.
He smiled. Three more jumps and he could execute his plan.
Gil-Galad was surprised the other kept backing away and realised the ploy too late. Before he knew it the other had used the trees to jump higher and over him. He lowered his weapon and nodded as he felt the tip of the other’s sword poke his back. “You win.”
He stepped forward and turned, amazement marring his features. “I’ve never seen that move.”
Legolas smiled. “It’s one of my father’s patented moves. It saved his life many times fighting the spiders.” He gasped, realising he’s revealed too much.
If the king had heard, he didn’t show it.
Ereinion narrowed his eyes. His plan was thwarted, but he hadn’t counted on this one being so good. Another devious smile came to life as he put of his armour. “You are limping.”
Legolas nodded. “Aye. The landing was a bit off, I should have practised more.”
Gil-Galad smiled. “Well, go to your room then. I shall send Elrond to take a look at it. He is a great healer. The best!” His eyes and voice were filled with pride and Legolas smiled, hearing it.
/They are close. No wonder he was so devastated when his king died. Will be, will die…/
He shook his head. He hadn’t realised how much had happened to dictate his own life, but now he did. So much things he considered the past hadn’t yet come to pass in this time and Legolas was thoroughly confused by it. /And I’ve never been good at tenses./
He patiently waited in his room for Elrond to arrive, though he had made sure to dress himself. After the expected knock he called out and smiled warmly at the approaching Peredhel, who had a concerned look in his eyes, that soon turned to suspicion.
“You don’t sport a grave injury!” His voice was accusing.
Legolas frowned, but then shrugged. “My ankle might have gotten strained during the sparring match, but that’s all. The king told me to wait here for you. He’s extremely proud of your healing skills, I heard.”
Elrond grinned and nodded. “Aye. I’ve always wanted to become a healer, though I realise I shall have to do some warfare on occasion.”
Legolas nodded and held out his leg so the other could easily examine it.
His ears picked up some silent sounds on the corridors and strained his hearing. “Ennas man?”
Elrond frowned and turned to investigate but gasped in shock when he saw the door being closed. He ran forward but could only hear it get locked. The next sounds he heard was the scraping of the couch being placed before the door and the silent snickering of his king. He couldn’t prevent a curse from leaving his lips.
Legolas grinned at it and carefully walked closer. “Now why did he do that?”
Elrond shrugged and rammed his fists on the door. Once he realised it was futile he leaned against it and cried. He didn’t want this.
Legolas was shocked and rushed forward, ignoring the minor discomfort in his ankle. He placed a hand on Elrond’s shoulder. “Give it time. He’s not going to leave that… what did he place before my door?” He smiled at the answer that came between the sobs. “Well, he can’t possibly leave the couch there forever. Erestor will never approve. Come, sit down, dry your tears and just wait.”
He forced Elrond to sit down and poured him some water. “I’m sorry I do not have anything else to offer.”
Elrond managed a smile and lowered his head, feeling horrible. He had thought he had hidden it, that Gil-Galad hadn’t noticed. But he obviously had.
Legolas sat down beside him and placed his arm around him to offer comfort. Elrond jumped up at the feel of it and back up against the door. It placed a frown on Legolas’ face. “Is this still about this morn?”
Elrond cocked his head and narrowed his eyes. “I don’t know about you but I’d rather not be in the same room as someone who loathes me.”
Legolas smiled. “True, but I don’t loathe you.” He cocked his head as well. “I’m sorry if I made you think I did.”
Elrond’s lips became a tight line. “Don’t bother. Do you think you’re the first to respond like that when I tell my name?”
Legolas’ face was filled with non-understanding until he laughed as he remembered. He had to put Elrond’s mind at ease, but he was unsure how to achieve that. He could hardly tell him the truth. /I’m sorry Elrond but I didn’t recognize you from the future. Ha, he’ll lock me up and throw away the key./
He sighed and locked his eyes, knowing Elrond could read his honesty. “Aye, I was stunned to hear your name, but not why you think.” Seeing Elrond’s eyes narrow he sighed. “You know you really don’t look Half-Elven.” He cocked his head. “But now that I look closer, and good, I do see some human qualities.”
He decided to stop Elrond from searching him by asking some questions. “But I am intrigued. Does your mortal side hamper you or are you only half-elven in name?”
Elrond relaxed but didn’t answer. “Why do you want to know?”
Legolas shrugged. “We have to do something while we wait for your king to let us out. And as I said: I wonder about it.”
Elrond sighed and sat down. “I do feel the cold. And no, I have no chest hair as everybody seems to think I have.” Mirth actually seeped into his voice and Legolas grinned. “That’s just prejudice. But feeling the cold must sometimes be a burden. At night.”
Elrond shook his head. “Not really. I just wear an extra warm robe, that’s all.”
He smiled as Legolas handed him another glass. “But I do have to be careful not to catch a cold.” His eyebrow went up at hearing a snicker.
Legolas shrugged and threw him an apologetic look. “Forgive me, but I still remember a friend, a mortal friend, of mine sneezing and my father lecturing him. You see my friend had jumped in the stream to try and catch the horse.” He shook his head at the remembrance. “And thus he indeed got a cold. So you better be careful if you sneeze. I shall put you straight in bed.”
Elrond blushed and lowered his head, though he smiled at the words. “As long as you don’t shake me awake when I sleep with my eyes closed.” He shrugged. “It is normal for me.”
Legolas nodded. “I shall try not to.”
He pointed to the medicine bag. “I believe you came to check my ankle.”
Elrond smiled and came closer. “I am sorry I misjudged you.”
Legolas shook his head. “No apology needed and it’s I who should say sorry to you. For embarrassing you this morn. I assure you I don’t usually look at myself like that.”
Elrond carefully probed the ankle, manipulating it and smiled at the response. “Why not? There’s a lot to be admired.” Hearing his own words he yelped and jumped back up, once more trying to escape.
Legolas instantly prevented it and gently forced him to lock eyes. “Am I to believe you find me attractive, healer?”
He saw the answer in the eyes and swallowed. /Now what do I do? I cannot allow this. I do not belong here. This can alter the future. Aiya, where is that Istar when you need him?/
He smiled and placed a wayward strand behind Elrond’s ear. “I am flattered. You hardly know me. And…” He looked down and the shadows cast under the door made him narrow his eyes.
He swiftly knelt and looked before he jumped up, grinning and shaking his head. “He’s obviously not done this very often.”
He pulled Elrond backward and inhaled deep before flinging himself against the door at just the right spot. Instantly it flew open, throwing the couch over as well.
Legolas grinned at Elrond’s disbelieving face. “He hadn’t placed the couch in all the way.” He smiled warmly. “Now I can wander around.”
Elrond nodded. “I can show you around.” He blushed and wished it would fade away. “I mean, if you want.”
Legolas was tempted to accept, but realised he couldn’t. He couldn’t do anything to make Elrond believe he had a chance. So he smiled warmly but shook his head. “Nay. We’d better not risk your king locking us in together elsewhere. He might not make the same mistake.”
He left and closed his eyes, feeling extremely bad. /I know I am doing the right thing, but why does it hurt so much?/
Chapter three Gandalf tried
The days passed by as snow melted for the sun and Legolas swiftly adjusted to his new environment, though he kept avoiding being alone with Elrond, who in turn avoided being near him at all.
Erestor felt sorry for his friend and instead of confronting Gil-Galad with it he decided to confront the elf that had done the hurt: Hendubeth. He could see his sudden appearance was surprising and he inwardly gave a victorious sound for he needed the other to be surprised. He swiftly approached and looked stern. “What are your feelings for Elrond?”
Legolas was startled indeed. Even though he felt something for the young Peredhel he was fairly sure he hid it. But then he remembered this was Erestor and chief counsellor to Gil-Galad. Legolas knew from experience Erestor was extremely perceptive and he smiled. “Elrond has always relied on your wisdom.” /Eh, will rely. Argh, these darn tenses. And why did I say that in the first place./
Erestor didn’t allow the words to bring him from his goal. “Answer my question. Do you love him?” He could read the answer in the green eyes and smiled, unexpectedly turned and marched away, leaving a stunned and puzzled Legolas in his wake.
Erestor had his answer and now he had to get his king to make sure something happened.
He continued marching till he stood before Gil-Galad’s private door.
After drawing a deep breath he knocked.
Gil-Galad opened the door and seemed surprised to see Erestor standing there. “What brings you here? Come in.”
Erestor shook his head and remained standing. “It is mutual but they are both too stubborn. You need to do something.”
After blinking a few times Gil-Galad understood and smirked. “So far all my plans have backfired. Any suggestions?”
Erestor nodded and his eyes narrowed. “Summon them before you and tell them.”
Gil-Galad growled. “You know as well as I do I have to threaten with prison before Elrond and he will do anything.”
Suddenly he laughed and hugged the stunned advisor. “That’s it, Erestor, yes, that’s it. You are in charge. I am taking those two on a camping trip.”
The gleam in his eyes was enough to alert all others it was just a cover and he knew he had to prevent both eldar seeing it.
Erestor stood and watched him run off. His body still tingled where the other had hugged him. For a moment he allowed his love to be visible before he perfectly schooled his features again and went about his business.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Elrond sighed and reluctantly packed his duffle bag. Why Ereinion had decided to take a short trip today amazed him and the reason why he had to accompany him deluded him even more. Didn’t his cousin know he needed to examine some students in two days?
When he came to the courtyard his eyes widened, seeing Hendubeth prepare the horses. Both elves knew instantly what was happening when they saw each other. Another meddling scheme from Gil-Galad.
Legolas growled and jumped off his horse. “Sire, perhaps another…”
Gil-galad looked at him sternly and Legolas swiftly held his tongue. The last days had told him a lot. He has learned the tales and songs about the high-king covered only the outer shell of the legend and in reality the king was quite remarkable. /And enough trouble for three. Father would have liked him./
Elrond too wisely held his tongue but made his reluctance known by looking straight ahead.
Gil-Galad contained a snicker at the obvious reluctance both elves displayed and pretended ignorance. This time his plan would work.
Elrond slowly panicked when he saw where they were going and as soon as they reached the lake he pulled his horse to a halt. “You can just forget about it, Ereinion! You are not locking us up in there.” He glared at the king who smiled innocently at him.
Elrond hardened his glare and the king subsided. “But I only want to see you happy, Elrond. And quite frankly it is beyond me why the two of you continue to avoid and ignore each other when all you desire is being near each other.” He shook his head and threw them both admonishing looks. “Get your act together. I shall not lock you up, but I suggest you talk, nay, I -order- you to talk and I will not see you back before you have.” He turned his horse and went back.
Legolas sighed and turned his horse as well, intend on following the king back. He yelped when an arrow landed before him. A few meters away was Gil-Galad, an angry look on his face. “I expect my orders to be carried out.”
Elrond dismounted and sighed, looking quite forlorn. “Better stay here if you want to remain alive. He means it.” He walked to the small beach and sat down.
Legolas growled as he realised he had no choice. He carefully approached and sat down as well. “It’s all Erestor’s fault.” Elrond was so surprised he looked at him and Legolas growled again. “Why does he have to be so perceptive? I cannot change the past, I mean the future, I mean the present, argh.”
He threw his bow down and rested his head on his knees, weeping his tears. “I do not belong here, Elrond. I belong in the future. I was wandering around my father’s halls and found a book of chants, I think they were… will be. I couldn’t read it and I read it out loud. And then I was here. I really don’t know what happened and I can’t undo it for I don’t even know what spell it was.”
Elrond had heard only parts of it and shrugged. “Wherever you’re from, the Valar wouldn’t have brought you here shouldn’t you belong here.” He smiled. “So you were trying to protect us?”
Legolas nodded. “Aye. I love you. Erestor has always been perceptive. I miss home.”
Elrond’s heart thundered in his chest. Being bold he embraced him and pulled him close. “I understand. It’s like having part of you permanently removed without being able to bring it back. My twin chose mortality and I lost him.” Legolas looked at him and Elrond smiled. “I think we belong together.”
He stood and looked at the water. “Let’s face it. We were attracted to each other instantly and we both have lost almost everything.” He turned. “Would staying here be so bad?”
Legolas understood the hidden question and he smiled, making his decision. He shook his head and stood. “Nay. As long as you are there.” He stepped forward and claimed a kiss.
Elrond smiled and his heart was freed when he read the other’s love in the green eyes. “Move into my rooms.” It wasn’t a question. He never wanted to fall asleep alone again.
Legolas cocked his head. “Don’t you think we should court each other first?”
Elrond shook his head. “Nay. I know we will work out and I don’t want to spend any more time apart from you than I have to. I’ve already had to miss you so much.”
Legolas suddenly threw his head back and laughed. “I don’t believe it. Unbelievable his ploy worked.”
Elrond grinned as well. “Shall we go?”
Legolas nodded and together they rode back.
They could see the knowing looks thrown their way as they rode through the city but couldn’t care less.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Erestor placed his hand on Ereinion’s shoulder. “You actually did well this time.”
Gil-Galad snorted. “Of course. How long before they bind, you think?”
Erestor shrugged. “Don’t know. A few years?”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Legolas and Elrond spend all their free time together and slowly but gradually their love deepened. They talked together and Legolas learned so much he hadn’t known about the Peredhel yet, but Elrond found out his love was remarkably secretive when it came to his past. He didn’t know what had happened, but Elrond could relate to the need to forget, so he never mentioned it nor asked questions. It didn’t matter to him, for all he cared about was the future: a future with his love.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Gandalf smiled at seeing his friends again and hugged the king, whom he had known since he was a mere babe. “Gil-Galad! Well met, well met indeed. I bring message from Saruman. Is it true what I hear about Elrond? Has he finally found love?” His voice was hopeful.
Ereinion grinned and nodded, summoning said elves. “He will be pleased to see you, my friend.”
Elrond and Legolas came swiftly and the Peredhel was indeed extremely pleased to see his friend again. “You were sorely missed, Gandalf.”
The Maia smiled and turned to take in Elrond’s love but frowned when he sensed the futuristic soul that inhabited the body. “I think you and I need to talk.” Without ado he grabbed the other by the arm and steered him out.
Elrond rolled his eyes but allowed it, knowing the other would only be making sure. And he hoped the Istar would somehow be able to heal the hurt he sensed inside his lover. It warmed him Gandalf was so protective of him and he knew without a doubt the wizard would extend it to his future mate.
Gil-Galad cocked his head. “Your smile is warming up and turning secretive. What is on your mind?”
Elrond blushed, feeling caught. “Marriage. I want to bind with him.”
Gil-Galad embraced him. “Have you discussed it with him?”
Elrond shook his head. “Nay. I think I never will. He has no parents, Ereinion. No one to give him away or give their blessing.”
Erestor gasped. “No living relative at all? Aiya, that is bad.” He sighed. “I shall see if there’s a way around it.”
Elrond shook his head. “Nay. It’s all right. It doesn’t have to be eternal, just knowing he is willing to do it is enough for me and thus we can say the vows in secret.”
Ereinion smiled. “Well, if you do need witnesses…” He didn’t finish but wiggled his eyebrows and Elrond elbowed him, but smiled none the less.
Legolas instantly knew the Maia had sensed and smiled. “You’ve changed, I mean, will change.” He grinned when Gandalf crossed his arms. “At least -that- hasn’t changed. You always did that.” He shook his head. “Will always be doing that.”
He sighed and sat down. “Aye, I am from the future. My name is… will be Legolas Thranduilion.”
Gandalf narrowed his eyes. “Oropher’s son’s child? But he’s a child himself!”
Legolas rolled his eyes. “Obviously I am not born yet.”
Gandalf nodded. “All right. If you’re from the future, tell me something.”
Legolas narrowed his eyes and cocked his head. “Isn’t that asking for trouble?”
Gandalf shook his head. “I know the future. Or at least the great outlines. Sauron will grow stronger. It’s that ring of his.”
Legolas nodded. “Aye. It was….” He gasped. “I mean is… I mean will be responsible for a lot of trouble.”
Gandalf nodded. “All right. Where will the battle for Middle-Earth be fought?”
Legolas smiled a weak smile. “At the slopes of Mount Doom, at least that’s what it will become. The lands will turns to bog after that, a natural grave for those who parish. A last alliance between Men and Elves will fight against Mordor. Isildur’s heir will defeat Sauron but the hearts of men are easily corrupted.”
Gandalf motioned him to silence and nodded. “All right. I can send you back to the future. You will arrive there as if you didn’t speak the spell that brought you here. And everybody’s memory here will be erased for your journey never happened.”
Legolas smiled. He was glad Elrond would not remember. “All right. Send me back.”
Gandalf uttered a spell and was stunned when it didn’t work. “What the…. You’re still here?”
Legolas looked around and nodded. “Looks like it. Now what?”
Gandalf shrugged. “I guess magic cannot fix this. The Valar must be responsible. Their magic is the only one stronger than mine when it comes to time travelling.” He placed a sorry hand on Legolas’ shoulder. “I guess you are stuck here.”
Legolas shrugged. “I don’t mind that much. Aye, I miss home and adar, but I have Elrond.” His eyes turned loving and he ran back.
“Come, meleth, let’s leave the king and his counsellor to try and understand that istar.” He dragged his love out and guided him outside, resting his head on his shoulder. “I do love you, you know that, right?”
Elrond nodded, his eyes filling with dread. “But?”
Legolas sighed. “You are stuck with me forever. I cannot go back. Gandalf tried and it didn’t work, so you have to keep me.” He yelped when Elrond hugged him tight and lifted him before kissing him. “I never want to lose you again. Ever!”
Thranduil screamed happily and an down the steps when he saw the wizard approach.
Gandalf smiled and allowed the Mirkwood king to hug him tight. “I heard you needed me?”
Thranduil nodded, his eyes wet with tears. “My Legolas needs you actually. He has said a spell and I don’t know what to do.”
Gandalf gasped. /So this is it. I have to hurry./ He smiled warmly. “All will be well, Thranduil. I assure you. Let me see the spell and give me time to write a reversal.” He hoped he was in time and that he didn’t offer hope where there was none. But he refused to be pessimistic about it.
Chapter four Double, double, toil and trouble
Years have passed by slowly and both Elrond and Legolas have grown older mentally. Everybody knew the two belonged together and nobody would dream of breaking them up. And not only because of the King’s wrath…
Erestor smiled fondly and shook his head when he found Ereinion bend over some tactic books. “Isn’t that Elrond’s turf?”
Gil-Galad looked up, grinning, and nodded. “Aye. But he’s got the day off.” He shrugged. “How could I refuse his lover?”
Erestor laughed openly and sat down.
His expression turned serious and his voice was the same when he spoke again. “What do you think?”
Ereinion sighed. “We must unite or we will all go down. Hendubeth is right about that. But I fear Elendil’s son.” Erestor frowned and the king sighed. “His future is shrouded in darkness.” He smiled. “We must make a stand though. I’ve send out messengers. Soon we will march.”
Erestor nodded. “It is good we have such a good warrior on our side.”
Gandalf looked at the seemingly sleeping elf with sorrow in his eyes. /I hope I am not too late. That I can prevent their pain./ Without hesitation or thought he said the incantation and waited for the soul to return.
Elrond stood and walked to the door, intend on returning to his study. He frowned when he found it locked. He turned and cocked his head in question. “Melamin?”
Legolas smiled and beckoned him closer. “Gil-Galad gave you the day off. I should have given you this sooner but…”
Elrond narrowed his eyes and then pierced the other’s, trying to determine if the other was talking about what he thought he was, and more importantly why. He smiled, seeing only love stare back at him and his groin tightened.
He grinned. “It sometimes amazes me that during the years I only yearn you more.”
Legolas laughed and closed the distance. “I know precisely what you mean. Aniten.” He lazily kissed him and pulled back. “Take me, melamin.”
Elrond nodded and slowly their clothes made a way to the floor again. He grinned. “There are days when I wonder why we dress at all.”
Legolas laughed understanding.
Under Elrond expert touch he didn’t last long, he never did.
As they rode out the tidal wave he smiled adoringly. “I, Legolas Thranduilion, take you as my mate. An oi!”
Elrond blinked when the last words registered with him and he screamed in happiness, claiming his lover’s mouth, whose real name has eluded his him.
When the assault was over Legolas laughed. “I am waiting.”
Elrond laughed as well and nodded, tightening his hold. “I, Elrond Peredhel, hereby take you…” He gasped when his love suddenly disappeared.
He jumped up, screaming his name. Not giving his appearance a look he ran out, screaming for his love. His search soon became frantic and all others jumped out the way, giving him disbelieving and sad looks.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Gil-Galad and Erestor looked up when they heard the heart-breaking cries and rushed outside. Their eyes widened when they saw Elrond slumped in the middle of the courtyard, naked, shivering and with a lost and longing look on his face.
Gil-Galad ran forward and covered him with his own cloak. “Elrond, what happened?” His eyes searched for the other elf, but didn’t find him.
Elrond slumped against him and fainted.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The healer wrung his hands, not knowing how to deliver the news to the king. He swallowed deep and decided to get it over with. “I fear your cousin is fading, my lord.”
It was Erestor’s soothing hand that made Ereinion still his words. He turned to his commanders with hopeful eyes, but they shook their heads, feeling more than guilty. “There are no tracks anywhere. He simply seems to have vanished.”
Hurried footsteps were heard and the king smiled when Gandalf and Cirdan rushed inside.
The sailor shook his head. “Once I come here and I find despair. I am so sorry.”
Gandalf listened to the tale and his eyes became determined. /I shall have to prevent this from happening again. So if Legolas says the chant I must make sure he returns. He cannot disappear again! Who knows where he is now. I cannot let this happen. I shall prevent this in the future./
Cirdan grasped Ereinion’s shoulder, knowing he needed his balance. “Is there no way to save him? Shall I bring him to Valinor?”
The healer shook his head. “Nay. There’s not enough time. He shall be dead within the two moons.”
Ereinion shook his head. “Nay. I need him alive.” His eyes became determined. “Bind him to me. He shall draw from me. I will sustain him.”
The healer opened his mouth but saw the determined expression and, realising all words would be useless, closed it without voicing his doubts and nodded his head instead. “As you wish.”
Cirdan watched them go and now placed a comforting hand on the counsellor. He had seen the painful look cross the features. “I am sure it will only be temporarily.”
Erestor smiled at his words and nodded, his eyes begging him to keep his secret and Cirdan nodded.
Gandalf involuntarily jumped back when Legolas flared up. Though nothing happened the wizard remained alert.
Legolas looked around dazed. Where was Elrond? Where was he? “Elrond?” Hearing a gasp on his right he turned and frowned when he saw Gandalf. The old Gandalf, from before he left. “Gandalf? What happened? Where am I? Or rather, when am I?”
Gandalf’s smile now completely faded, now fully realising what had happened. “I thought… So I was responsible… my promise years ago…”
Hearing the ramblings Legolas frowned and crossed his arms, waiting for the wizard to come round.
He yelped when he was suddenly buried in a tight hug. “Legolas, ion-nin, don’t ever scare us again. Have some mercy on your father’s heart.”
Legolas inhaled and returned the embrace. Even though his heart ached he was happy to have his father back. /Guess I know where and when I am now./
He smiled. “Adar, tell me about Elrond?”
If Thranduil was surprised about the request he didn’t show it, but merely shrugged. “What do you want to hear. We’ve been invited to the twins’ party and I was inclined of remaining here, but now…” He nodded. “Aye, we shall go and perhaps Elrond can take a look at you. See if you are fully whole again.”
Legolas frowned. “I thought nothing would have….”
He trailed of when Gandalf placed a hand on his shoulder. The wizard had shaken himself out of his trance and now smiled ruefully at Legolas. “I am sorry, it is all my fault. Come, it is a long tale. Let us walk in the meanwhile and allow the sun to warm you.”
Legolas frowned and took the wizard’s lead.
Once they were alone Gandalf spoke. “You remember, as does everybody. You disappeared, Legolas, and Elrond was devastated. I vowed there and then I would stop that from happening and figured undoing the chant was the only way.”
Legolas nodded in understanding and he listened in disbelief to the wizard’s tale. When he was done he sighed deeply. “So you know the spell now. Why did it bring me to Lindon?”
Gandalf shrugged. “It can bring you anywhere and it would have brought you back as well, had you remembered it.” He smiled rueful. “You must have thought about Lindon when uttering it. I see no other reason.”
Legolas shrugged. “Highly likely. Lindon has always fascinated me. But it doesn’t compare to the truth.” He looked out over the trees. “So I myself am responsible for Elrond’s pain. And the changes in you.”
Gandalf placed a comforting hand on his shoulder. “As am I. I just didn’t realise it until just now.” His lit up with hope. “But if you remember me and Elrond being thus affected, from before you said the spell, it means it had to happen.” He nodded. “It’s a comforting thought.”
Legolas shrugged. “If you say so. Can you help me stay here? I fear joining my father to Imladris.”
Gandalf shook his head. “Look in the mirror, Legolas. He will not recognize you. He never had.”
Legolas frowned. “What do you mean by that?”
Gandalf’s eyes sparkled. “Ever since you’ve been born I’ve tried to make Elrond befriend you. But the more I tried the more he refused.”
Legolas laughed. “Aye, he can get like that.” Knowing it was safe to go made him calm and he actually looked forward to it. “I shall court him and win his heart all over, Gandalf.”
The wizard smiled but wisely held his tongue.
Elrond looked out the window longingly. Even though years have passed he never stopped looking, hoping. Erestor couched politely behind him and a rueful smile came to his face. “Where is he, Erestor? Will he ever come back?”
Erestor shrugged. /I am selfish in my wish, but I want you to heal, meldir. So Ereinion will be free again./ He never forced Elrond to do anything and smiled as he came to stand beside him.
“Come, we march tomorrow. Please don’t look for death in the upcoming battle.”
Elrond smiled and nodded. “I won’t. I have to look after Vilya for him.” Erestor gasped and Elrond smiled warmly. “He doesn’t want the enemy to get hold of it should he get injured.”
But his words did nothing to stop the doom Erestor felt. He knew without a doubt he would lose his love in battle. /That means I will have to keep an eye on you. The truth will be revealed./
Chapter five Going on
Cirdan smiled supportively at Erestor, who looked hopelessly lost.
The counsellor sighed and shrugged. “I don’t know what to do anymore. He hasn’t spoken to me.”
Cirdan smiled knowingly. “And the words he does utter are insults.” He embraced the counsellor. “Don’t let it get you, my friend. He’s mad at Ereinion but lashes out at you. Let me talk to him.”
Erestor shrugged, not seeing what Cirdan could do to make Elrond responsive, but he didn’t stop him from entering the tent Elrond has occupied since the war has ended.
Cirdan cocked his head and took in the pitiful looking Elrond. “You should get yourself clean.” Seeing Elrond’s eyes fill with hatred he crossed his arms. “Don’t lash out at me for what Ereinion has done. Can’t you see he didn’t want to lose you. It would only have been a temporary bond, but you never really stopped grieving him. So now that your lifeline is gone it comes back. Why lash out at Erestor for that?”
Elrond turned and remained silent.
Cirdan approached him. “We all lost our king last week, Elrond, and I lost someone I called my son.”
Those words made him realise he wasn’t the only one grieving and Elrond allowed the shipwright to sit him down before he leaned into the embrace. “I am sorry. I didn’t mean those things.” He lowered his head. “I find myself forced to grieve them both now. And it’s overwhelming.”
Cirdan nodded. “What will you do? You can come with me if you like.”
Elrond smiled but shook his head. “Nay. I shall settle somewhere. Build a safe haven for all.”
Cirdan understood. By creating something new the Peredhel would able to go on and deal with the loss. All other places would only remind him of the loss. “I am sure Erestor will come with you. Many of Lindon are waiting for the two of you to make a move.” He squished the other. “They will follow you.” He grinned. “After all, you are Ereinion’s heir, in a way. New lord to the Noldor.”
Hearing this widened Elrond’s eyes and he stood. “And this is not appropriate behaviour for a lord.” He nodded. “Tell Erestor to come in will you?”
He turned when he heard a polite couch from the entrance of his tent and his eyes filled with water when he saw Erestor standing there. “No need, I am here. You wished to see me, my lord?” He had overheard the conversation and agreed. Founding a new realm would be best. He bowed. “I am at your command, my lord.”
Elrond rushed forward and hugged the stunned advisor. “Never call me that again, Erestor. It is I who should be uttering those words. I am so sorry.”
Once Erestor was over his initial shock he returned the embrace and smiled. “Don’t be. Your grief, anger and pain needed a way out.” He pulled back and smiled. “Shall we take a look at the map and see if we can’t find a suitable location?”
Elrond nodded and gladly gave Erestor control, for he was adrift on his emotions. It was soon decided they would settle in the Valley of the Bruinen and Erestor made all the arrangements, giving Elrond the time he needed. But his pain remained.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Gandalf smiled as he saw what the Noldor had achieved in such short time span. He rubbed his beard in admiration. “Elrond, Erestor, I am impressed. This truly is a haven.” He noticed Elrond’s smile was rather empty and he feared for the other.
“If there’s anything I can do?”
Elrond nodded. “Books, Gandalf, books. Our library needs to reach sizes unlike any has seen.”
The wizard nodded. “If you are asking me to raid others the answer is no.” He wiggled his eyebrows. “But I shall ask them all for copies.”
He watched him go and turned to Erestor. “Tell me the truth. Is he coping?”
Erestor shrugged. “He’s going on, but he’s not moving on.”
Gandalf smiled. “First he loses his lover and now his king and only relative. It must be painful.”
Erestor smiled. “Aye, it is. I wish I could help him carry the burden.”
Gandalf smiled. “Have faith in the Valar. I do.” It was all he could do. Suddenly his eyes sparkled. /-He- will be born soon. Maybe I can bring them together?/
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Elrond looked out the window. As beautiful as his realm was he didn’t notice it. /There’s no joy in it./
He nodded, his mind made up. He knew it was dangerous to challenge the Valar, any Vala, but he had to. He couldn’t stand being alone anymore. He wanted Hendubeth back. /They took him and they will have to give him back!/
He lit the candles and closed the door. He couldn’t be disturbed. /Now is the only chance I have. Gandalf can get me back if something goes wrong./ He didn’t realise he actually had the desire to return.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
He blinked and looked around. The place was cold and it made him extremely chilly.
“The living cannot dwell here, Elrond Peredhel. And the dead do not feel temperature, so heating the place is useless. Why are you here?”
Elrond looked straight at the imposing Vala, who had chosen to wear his cold blue and white robes. It reminded Elrond of the large mountains, covered with snow and of the frozen rivers, reflecting the sunlight.
His thoughts amused the Vala who smiled warmly. “Well, do I get an answer or must I guess?”
Elrond widened his eyes but then remembered his mission. “Hendubeth. I want him back! I cannot live without him. Please, give him back.”
Mandos narrowed his eyes. He didn’t know that name. “There are so many in my halls. Show me who he is.” Seeing the confusion he grinned. “Just think of him.”
As Elrond though he saw the images materialize before him and his hand reached out to touch it, but went straight through, feeling naught but air.
Mandos cocked his head. Suddenly he realised. /The one that isn’t born yet, though he looks different. How to fix this?/ “Wait here.”
He swiftly went to Manwë, needing his wisdom. Together they reached a compromise and while Manwë went to talk to the soul, Mandos returned to Elrond’s side.
“I hope you didn’t wait long?” He looked at a mirror and smiled. “No, only two hours have passed in your world.”
He smiled at Elrond. “You came here for your love. What if I cannot give him? What if he doesn’t want to go?”
Elrond had never considered those things. Why wouldn’t he want to go?
“Sometimes a soul chooses to forget its mortal life to stop him from hurting here.” Only now did Mandos see Elrond realise he could hear the Peredhel’s thoughts and he smiled. “You came here for aid, and aid you shall receive. Return, you won’t be alone.”
Before Elrond could ask for clarifications he felt himself falling. He gasped when he felt his body again and quickly drew in some deep breaths.
Now that he was in his room again he felt awfully warm. He remembered the Vala’s words but was afraid to hope. Slowly he opened his eyes, but saw only the burning candles and his bed. He sighed saddened. /So I need to find a way to go on alone. I shall always love you, Hendubeth./
He stood and gasped when he felt an arm falling from his back. He twirled round and his eyes widened on their own, taking in the naked elf on his floor. He noticed the golden tresses and cocked his head. /I didn’t ask for a new lover. I hope Mandos didn’t bring you for that. I could never love another, even if I wanted to./
Realising he was now responsible for the other he grabbed a large, warm cloak and draped it over the other, before picking him up. He frowned when he saw the unfocused clear blue eyes. /I know you. But yet I am sure I’ve never seen you before. How can that be?/
He carefully placed the elf in his bed and covered him with his blankets. /Herbs, I need herbs. And hot tea and some food. You’ll be hungry, I think./
He ran out and smiled when he bumped into Erestor. “Erestor. There’s someone in my room. Watch him for me till I come back.” He didn’t give Erestor time to ask questions and ran on.
Erestor frowned at the words and at Elrond’s strange behaviour. It was almost as if some life had crept back into the orbs. He shrugged and made his way over to the room, hoping that at least there would be someone there. That Elrond wasn’t hallucinating.
He gasped when he saw the gorgeous elf in the bed. “Well, if that isn’t a heartbreaker, I don’t know who is.”
He looked around, frowning at the candles and pulled up a chair to sit on. He would watch this mysterious elf for Elrond.
The door opened and Elrond walked in. Erestor looked stern and Elrond lowered his eyes. “I know. It was stupid. But I was so alone and I wanted him back.” He shrugged. “Mandos didn’t give him.” He looked up and his eyes were repented, feeling guilty for the mysterious elf. “They gave him. And I can’t turn my back on him when I am responsible.”
Erestor smiled. “I don’t know why Mandos decided not to give you Hendubeth, meldir, but he did do just by granting another to return. Your responsibility is awakened and will help you move on, I think.”
Elrond shrugged. “I don’t know, Erestor. I don’t want to move on. I shall never wed again.”
Erestor chuckled. “One step at the time, Elrond. Do you know his name?”
Elrond shook his head but smiled when his charge stirred to awake.
The blue orbs filled with awareness and the first thing the elf did was looked at them fearful and pull the blankets closer.
Elrond smiled. “Be at peace, we mean you no harm. My name is Elrond Peredhel and this is Erestor, my counsellor.” He smiled. “And this is Imladris, my realm.”
Erestor smirked, hearing the pride in Elrond’s voice. /Aye, Mandos, you made the right decision. I just hope this elf is strong enough./
The stranger looked around and decided he could trust them. Suddenly his eyes widened. “Eärendil’s son?” /How do I know that? And why do I remember talking to Manwë?/
Elrond too widened his eyes. “Aye. He was my father.”
The elf smiled and lowered his head. “Than I am at your command, my lord.”
Erestor frowned. “You knew Eärendil?”
The elf shook his head. “Nay. He was still a baby when I died. I’m glad to see they managed to flee the city.” He shivered as he remembered the battle.
Elrond and Erestor gasped, locked their eyes and looked at the strange elf. Erestor had the courage to ask. “Who are you?”
The stranger gasped and blushed. “Aiya, forgive me. My name is Glorfindel…”
Erestor yelped. “Glorfindel of Gondolin? Mandos gave us the Slayer?”
Elrond raised his eyebrow. “Erestor. Your manners!”
He looked at Glorfindel and shrugged. “Lately I lost my king and only relative and before that my mate. I was overcome by the desire to have him again and I challenged Mandos. He gave me you. I am sorry.”
Glorfindel sucked his cheeks and cocked his head. “They wouldn’t have sent me here without a reason. You are the heir of the one I once served. So now I serve you. Will you tell me what happened? I mean after…”
Elrond nodded in understanding. “I shall tell you everything, Glorfindel. But first I want you to eat this and drink this herbal tea. The Athelas will strengthen you.”
Erestor grinned and stood. “I shall prepare some rooms for him, my lord.” He looked at Glorfindel. “Elrond will look after your recovery.” He smiled at the dumbfound expression. “He is a healer first.”
Elrond instantly looked at Erestor in shock. He now realised why another was sent back for him. To trigger his instinctive care. He understood that Mandos did want him to stop living in the past, to look to the future and perhaps learn to love again. And who better to trigger those feelings of care and concern than the one elf he had always felt indebted to: Glorfindel of Gondolin: the one whose actions had saved his father’s live.
He sighed and inhaled deep before focussing on the blond again. “Well, while you heal we should find something for you to occupy your time with. You do plan to stay here, or would you rather explore the world?”
Glorfindel smiled warmly and shook his head. “I shall stay. I think in your services I will see enough of the world to satisfy my curiosity.” He looked at the ceremonial weapons at the wall. “Though I think I need new weapons. Unless Manwë recreated them as well as me I don’t think they’ve survived the fire.”
Elrond nodded in understanding. “I shall have them especially made for you.” He grinned. “Erestor told me we needed a seneschal. Willing to take it?”
Glorfindel nodded. “Aye, my lord.”
Elrond smiled. “But the truth about your rebirth, if we can call it that, must remain a secret between you, Erestor and myself.”
Glorfindel nodded in understanding. “Saying the Valar send me back should keep their tongues together.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Gandalf frowned when he saw Erestor himself tending to a room. “What are you doing, counsellor?”
Erestor felt busted and actually blushed, drawing a chuckle from the Maia. He shrugged, seeing no harm in the other knowing. “The Valar sent Glorfindel back to us. He’ll become part of our household.”
Gandalf widened his eyes. “What? Really?”
Erestor nodded. “Aye.” He did not elaborate and continued his work.
Gandalf understood and smiled. “If anyone deserved to be reborn it is he.” Erestor glared at him and he cocked his head.
Erestor briskly turned, forcing his anger to fade. The Maia didn’t know and he intended to keep it that way. And he knew the other would never intentionally hurt him. He just didn’t know. “If you excuse me, I have work to do.”
Legolas stood at the cave’s entrance and sighed. This rain was keeping them from continuing their journey.
Thranduil came up beside him and pulled him close. “Patience, son. Soon we can proceed and then it will only be a mere two days before we reach Imladris.”
Legolas rested his head against his father’s shoulder and closed his eyes. He called back the images of the past, of Lindon.
He knew he looked different now, but he looked forward to courting Elrond. Properly this time.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Glorfindel smiled and turned, beaming at the watching Peredhel. “I still got it.”
Elrond grinned. “If you say so. All I can say is that I hate to meet you when enraged.”
Glorfindel grinned. “I could never attack you or Erestor.”
He looked forward to the future and he was extremely grateful the other two had so easily accepted him and welcomed him not only in their realm and home, but their little circle as well. He would protect them forever.
They turned when they heard Erestor’s polite cough. Seeing the blush Elrond wondered what was wrong. Erestor showed two letters. “An official note from Thranduil, he’s received a son. They’ve named him Legolas. But his wife passed during birth.”
Elrond widened his eyes. “What? How’s that possible?”
Erestor shrugged. “Apparently she refused to come here even though Thranduil and the healers advised it.” He allowed a meek smile. “It seems he’s over his hatred, Elrond. Perhaps we should invite them?”
Elrond shook his head. “Nay. Send our best wishes and our sympathy.”
Glorfindel frowned. “If you parted as enemies Erestor’s idea sounds wise, Elrond.”
Elrond sighed and nodded. “All right, you may invite them, but at the same time state we more than understand should he desire to remain and enjoy the first years of his son.”
Glorfindel smirked at the delicate wrapped message of disinterest.
Erestor shook his head, but was glad he had managed to prevent the worst. Sometimes counselling Elrond was tiresome.
He handed the second letter. “It’s from Lord Celeborn. A marriage proposal, an alliance.”
Elrond cocked his head and Erestor swallowed. Who knew how the hurt Half-Elf would react. “What does he write exactly, Erestor?”
The counsellor widened his eyes, clearly showing he hadn’t expected it. “His daughter Celebrían is eligible, and she does admit to an interest towards you.”
Elrond looked at the sky and seemed to think. Suddenly he nodded. “All right. I have no objections to such an alliance, but she must know she can never have my heart. I trust you to put it into appropriate words.”
Erestor understood and nodded.
He watched Elrond walk away and yelped when Glorfindel placed a hand on his shoulder.
The blond smiled. “If the daughter is anything like the mother, I say she can heal him, meldir.” For which he was grateful. He knew the Peredhel to be hurt on the inside still and he longed to see it heal. But he knew that couldn’t be rushed and he knew he wasn’t the one to heal it. But he would see the other happy and help him heal.
Erestor shrugged. “Only time will tell. But I don’t look forward to writing this letter, I can tell you that.”
Glorfindel nodded. “Perhaps mentioning the freedom she will maintain will help? Elrond isn’t bound to expect more from her than heirs and company.”
Erestor nodded. “And that’s precisely why I fear writing them, Glorfindel. I know the lady. She wouldn’t have agreed to such an alliance if she didn’t want it.” He shook his head. “An admiration is an understatement.”
Glorfindel nodded in understanding. “So the Valar did give him a new love.” He smiled deviously. “And they need us to make him see that.”
Erestor looked up to the heavens, making Glorfindel laugh. But he agreed with Erestor. It was impossible to get Elrond to something against his wish and even more impossible to make him see what he refused to see. But the blond had hope. Soon, he was sure of it, he would have to escort the lady here, to her new home and her husband to be.
He grinned. “Children are bound to defreeze even him.” He looked at Erestor. “And you forget one import detail. His care and need to care.” He tapped at the letter. “And -she- will give him that. He will be responsible for her and her happiness. And once there are children…” He saw understanding in Erestor’s eyes and didn’t finish his sentence. The counsellor nodded. Perhaps Glorfindel was right.
